British Police Nab Six Over Christmas Terror Plot

British police say they have arrested six people suspected of plotting terror attacks for Christmas on behalf of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group (ISIS) in the United Kingdom.

Police officials said the arrests in the English Midlands city of Derby on Monday foiled a “significant” terror plan that came after months of close surveillance by the MI5 and counter-terrorism police forces.

The detainees, all aged 22 to 36, had planned to set off a bomb in a crowded British shopping center during the Christmas period, according to reports.

The Guardian confirmed the reports, saying, “Material recovered from an address raided in Derby has been initially assessed as being consistent with that needed to make homemade explosives.”

The counter-terrorism unit in Britain also noted that the detentions were linked to “international-related terrorism.”

Further investigations are under way to determine the motives behind the foiled terror plot.

In a late-October report, British security services said they had foiled at least 10 terrorist attacks over the past two years in the country.

“We continue to work at a relentless pace with our key partners, currently dealing with around 550 live cases at any one time. The counter-terrorism network and security services have successfully foiled at least 10 attacks in the last two years, with 294 convictions for terror-related offenses,” said Neil Basu, the deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Sharia Police Nab Woman Who Dumped Newborn

For dumping her new baby boy on a refuse dump, a middle aged woman is now cooling her heels in Police custody in Jigawa.

Malam Sa’idu Aliyu, the State Commandant of the Jigawa Hisbah Guards, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Dutse that the suspect (names withheld) was arrested by the guards on October 29.

NAN reports that Hisbah is the Sharia Law enforcement agency in the state.

According to Aliyu, the suspect is a resident of Bulakalu Village in Dutse Local Government Area.

He said that the woman dumped the baby in Shuwarin Village in Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state.

The commandant said that the baby was picked by a `good Samaritan’, who took him to the district head of the community and later reported the incident to the police.

According to Aliyu, upon receiving the report, Hisbah deployed its intelligence officers to the two local government areas to fish out the mother of the baby.

Aliyu told NAN that the guards eventually got an intelligence report that a woman in Bulakalu Village gave birth to the baby.

“The residents said they had not been seeing the suspect with her baby.

“We invited the suspect to our office where she confessed to being the mother of the boy.

“She also confirmed that she was the one who personally dumped the baby, because of fear of stigmatisation for giving birth out of wedlock,’’ he said.

Aliyu said that the baby was in good health and in the custody of a woman in Shuwarin Village, pending the conclusion of investigations into the case.

He said the suspect had been handed over to the Police for further action.

Indonesian police said Thursday they have arrested three suspects in connection with an online prostitution ring that allegedly linked adult men to about 100 mostly teenage boys.

Officers caught the first suspect, a man in his 40s accused of pimping out boys on his Facebook page, on Tuesday in a hotel room in Cisarua on Java island.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was with seven boys and an 18-year-old when he was arrested, said senior police officer Agung Setya.

Two more suspects were detained on Wednesday, one who allegedly also offered boys over social media, and another accused of using the service which involved boys between 12 and 18 years of age.

“They all know each other, they’re a syndicate,” said Setya.

Investigators found 99 boys offered online at prices ranging from 1.2 million rupiah to 10 million rupiah ($90 to $750).

The police began monitoring the first suspect in August, when they came across his Facebook account during a regular online check.

He had been released from jail in March after serving a sentence for prostitution involving girls, Setya added.

Asrorun Niam Sholeh, head of the government-backed rights group the National Commission for Child Protection, urged the state to swiftly issue new laws to combat sexual crimes against children.

“We have to use this as momentum to really wage a war against sexual crime,” he said, adding that children were being “physically and psychologically damaged”.

resident Joko Widodo in May introduced tough new punishments for child sex offenders, including a maximum penalty of death and chemical castration, after the brutal gang-rape and murder of a schoolgirl sparked nationwide outrage.

Police Nab South African Cocaine Trafficker’s Nigerian Accomplice

A Nigerian suspected of having sponsored a South African woman, Lerato Lekganyane, who was allegedly caught with 1.21 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on May 20, has been arrested.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed this on Tuesday at Lekganyane’s trial before Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court, Lagos.
The unnamed Nigerian man and Lekganyane will be arraigned, (she for the second time) before Justice Kuewumi on August 4.
Lekganyane was said to have been apprehended by NDLEA officials at the MMIA while attempting to board a Johannesburg, South Africa-bound plane with the illicit substance concealed in two packages inside her bra.
Prosecuting counsel, Mr. Augustine Nwagu, had told the court that Lekganyane acted contrary to Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The accused had earlier been arraigned and pleaded guilty to one count of cocaine trafficking pressed against her by the agency, after which Justice Babs Kuewumi adjourned till yesterday for review of the facts of the case and sentencing.
Yesterday, however, Nwagu informed the court that he needed to amend the charge sheet as Lekganyane’s accomplice, a Nigerian, had also been arrested and brought to court.
He said, trying Lekganyane and her accomplice would ensure smoothness of the trial.
“I was informed this morning that the person that sponsored her for this trip has been arrested and they even brought him to court this morning, but I told them that I could not file the charge now. I will be applying for a very short adjournment to enable me to amend the charge and join the second person that they have just arrested,” the prosecutor said.
Defence counsel, Chief (Mrs.) Lilian Omotunde opposed Nwagu’s application.
She said: “I am objecting to this application made by the prosecuting counsel in view of the fact that the matter was slated for review of facts today and the defendant has already pleaded guilty. She is a foreigner; she has accepted her guilt. I expected my colleague to have gone ahead for the review.
“A few minutes ago, I was informed that a Nigerian who is the mastermind is in court. If it pleases Your Lordship, I will be applying that we go ahead with the review of the case. My learned friend knows what to do with the mastermind that has just been arrested.”
In a short ruling, Justice Kuewumi said the prosecution was entitled to the right to amend its charge if it wished.
He adjourned till August 4, 2016 for further proceedings.
