Bomb Blast Hits Maiduguri, Many Feared Dead

Many traders and travellers were feared killed on Wednesday as an improvised explosive suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents went off outside a car park in Maiduguri, Borno state.

The explosion went off at a park popularly called Mun Garage at about 9a.m. in the capital city of the north-east Nigerian state.

A witness who said he was lucky to survive the incident said he saw about a dozen bodies covered with blood littering the scene.

“I thank God for sparing my life,,” said Usman Kachalla, a local trader. “I don’t know if it is a suicide bomber, we just heard the blast and I saw my self covered with dust.”

An official of the Civilian-JTF, Alhaji Khalil, confirmed the incident.

“Yes there was a blast early this morning outside Muna Garage along Mafa road. We have sent our operatives down there; but we have not confirmed the casualty,” said the Civilian-JTF official.

Suspected Herdsmen Kill 26 Persons, Injure Many In Benue

In what seemed like a coordinated attacks, suspected Fulani herdsmen yesterday allegedly attacked four Benue communities killing over 26 persons, injuring many others and razing several houses and huts.

The attacks came on the heels of Saturday’s invasion of Dusa villages in Turan council ward of Logo local government, where a Village Head and five others were killed.

It was gathered that the villages affected in the latest attacks were Uzaar in Tombo, Anyii in Logo local government and Vase in Ukum local government. According to the source, the marauders launched an attack on Uzzar and Anyii Monday night killing about 8 persons and razing down parts of the affected communities.

According to him, “Vase was attacked at about 1am Tuesday where 12 persons including six relatives of a serving Permanent Secretary in the state were butchered in cold blood. The sequence of the attacks clearly showed that they were well coordinated and that is why the people could not put up any form of resistance.

“As we speak there is a huge influx of displaced persons of over 1,000 including women and children running away from their homes to Ugba, the headquaters of Logo same as Zaki Biam in Ukum, for safety. From the sustained attacks it is becoming clear that the herdsmen want to take over the affected communities close to River Benue because of the rich vegetation.” When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the attacks, said however that “the Police have recovered four corpses from Vase, three from Anyii and one from Uzaar village. That is the number I can confirm to you.”

Nigeria Bombs Boko Haram Convoy, 15 Terrorists Killed, Many Wounded

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has carried out its first major air campaign under the recently launched ‘Operation Gama-Aiki’ mission, during which 15 Boko Haram insurgents were killed.

The terrorists were killed as an Alpha Jet bombed their convoy in the northern part of Borno state, officials said.

The aerial bombardment came about 72 hours after the air force commissioned despatched six war planes to tackle the deadly Boko Haram sect in the country’s volatile northeast.

NAF’s Operation Gama Aiki, a Hausa-coined nom de guerre which means ‘Finish the Job’, was launched on Friday June 19 with a mission to dislodge remnants of Boko Haram insurgents fleeing Sambisa forest.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Ayodele Famuyiwa, a group captain, said the insurgents were spotted under trees by one of its intelligence planes, King Air A350i, while on surveillance of the insurgency-ravaged mission.

They were immediately bombed, with 15 of them killed and their seven Hilux vans destroyed, Mr. Famuyiwa said.

Some wounded terrorists fled with gunshot wounds, the statement said.

“The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group,” the statement said.

“Troops also confirmed two gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet. Two AK-47 rifles, two RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered.

Boko Haram fighters had two weeks ago recaptured the communities around the border with the Niger Republic from where they had been launching attacks on civilians and security forces.

Group Captain Famuyiwa, who is the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, said the surveillance aircraft was able to send quick signals back to the Alpha Jet which came to attack the Boko Haram location and dislodged their movement towards a ground troop location.

Monday Morning Explosion Kills Many In Maiduguri Mosque

At least 20 persons were killed in a fresh explosion in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Monday morning, as residents gathered around a mosque.

The explosion sounded as residents speculated that a fleeing Boko Haram bomber abandoned an improvised explosive device in the area during Sunday night’s attack on the city.

A police officer, said the victims had gathered to investigate if a bomb was truly abandoned in the mosque.

“I have never seen such foolishness when people would go peeping into a mosque to find out if truly there was an explosive deposited in a place. But sadly, the bomb went off and over 20 persons were killed and many injured.”

But the account of Malam Suleiman, a primary school teacher in the area, was slightly different.
“The people normally sit down around the mosque in the morning,” he said. ”The place is like a meeting point where neighbours converge to relax.”

“After the morning prayers they just sat down outside the mosque as usual and then the bomb went off. It was not suicide bombing like that of last night. It may have been planted.

“Many people died but I can’t give actual figure of the casualties”.

Ben Carson Says Many Americans Are ‘Stupid’

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, whose poll numbers have taken off thanks to enthusiastic populist support, seems to hold a more skeptical view of voters than he usually displays on the campaign trail. In a speech from last year, Carson said in reference to the American people, “Many of them are stupid,” Mother Jones reported Tuesday.

His statement came during a stop on a book tour, when Carson spoke at the Richard Nixon Library on Oct. 19, 2014. Many in the crowd seemed to want Carson to run for president, chanting “run, Ben, run” as he entered the room. When an audience member asked if he would enter the 2016 presidential race as an independent, Carson said he would not do so because it would split the Republican vote.

Carson broadened his speech from specific political parties to vague political enemies, who he said were permeating various aspects of American society in a quest to control the country:

They can twist and turn things as much as they want. But what they don’t understand—and they miscalculated. They were doing a great job in terms of fundamentally changing this nation. In terms of infiltrating the school systems. In terms of infiltrating the media. All of this—they’ve done a great job. Everything was perfect. Except they underestimated the intelligence of the American people. The people are not as stupid as they think they are. Many of them are stupid. Okay. But I’m talking about overall.

Boko Haram Kills 8, Kidnaps Many After Reading Names From Hit List In Cameroon

 Residents in northern Cameroon say suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed eight people and kidnapped an unknown number of others for collaborating with Cameroon security forces in the nation’s border village of Aisaharde near a military base in Mora.

Pia Robert, a resident of Aisaharde village, near a military base in Mora, said in a telephone interview that about 30 assailants stormed the village early on Thursday and moved from door to door reading the names of people from a list. He said when someone’s name was read, he was accused of collaborating with Cameroonian soldiers and immediately killed or taken away.

He said three women and five men were slaughtered and their houses were burnt. He added that Cameroon soldiers arrived three hours after the incident, saw the corpses and started investigations, but it is still early to say how many were kidnapped.

Midjiyawa Bakary, the governor of Far North Cameroon, confirmed the attack, saying a few houses were burnt and the military is combing the hills on the border with Nigeria to track the assailants.

Many Boko Haram Suspects Arrested in Lagos, Ogun, Says Ex-Army GOC

Despite past attempts by Boko Haram insurgents to infiltrate Lagos, the Nigerian Army said it was able to nip their acts of terror in the bud by arresting them.

Reports gathered that the suspected members of Boko Haram were arrested during several raids conducted in both Lagos and Ogun States by the 81 Division headquarters.

The sect has in the past tried to infiltrate the South-west, especially Lagos, to set up their terror cells, but were blocked at every turn by the security agencies.

Chief among the attempts was the plot by a suicide bomber who blew herself up near THISDAY’s Lagos office last year and that of the lone suicide bomber arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.

The outgone General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major-General Tamunomeibi Dibi, said despite the peculiarities of the state, the command was able to ensure maximum security.

Dibi, who made this disclosure at the handover ceremony to the new GOC, Major General Isidore Edet, said many of the sect members were arrested during his tenure.

Although he did not put a figure on the number of persons arrested and what they did with them, he said they were many who were arrested.

He called on soldiers in the division to remain vigilant and also ensure that the insurgents do not infiltrate Nigeria’s economic hub and its environ.

He said: “We all know about the security challenges around us and the Boko Haram challenge. We also know about the peculiarities of Lagos.

“We have been able to prevent the incursion of the Boko Haram sect into Lagos. A good number of Boko Haram suspects were arrested in Lagos.

“You are all aware of the challenges we are going through; the problem of Boko Haram. The fact that you are not in the North-east does not mean you are not fighting the war.

“We are all involved in the war because wars of this nature do not have a front or a rear end. So far, we are winning the war and I want you to do more. Be more vigilant and ensure security of your environment, your barracks.”

Explosion Kills Many In Maiduguri Bus Station

A bomb explosion has rocked a crowded motor park in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, residents and security operatives have said.

The incident occurred at a busy location where tricycles pick passengers, and may have killed dozens and injured even many more.  The thunderous blast, which sounded at about 6:30am, resonated all over Maiduguri, residents say.

Witnesses later said the explosion occurred near the entrance of Gamboru Market where operatives of commercial tricycles park to pick passengers.

“We heard the blast at about 6:30am this morning and shortly afterwards, we saw people running from the direction of the market screaming that it was a bomb,’ said Maryam Abu, a civil servant whose residence is close to the area.
