Maku Calls For Removal Of Immunity Clause From Constitution

Former Information Minister Labaran Maku on Sunday called for the removal of immunity clause for elected executive officers from the country’s constitution. Maku, a gubernatorial candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa state in 2015, made this call while fielding questions from newsmen in Wakama, Akun Development Area of the state.

He explained that the removal of the immunity clause would help tackle corruption and ensure good governance. He specifically advocated for the removal of the clause that protects the president, governors and local government council chairmen from facing prosecution in breach of office. He said that the immunity clause had created an umbrella for some state governors to tamper with their state resources, thereby leading to underdevelopment at the grassroots.

The former minister also advised Nigerians to pray for better things in the New Year as well as pray for permanent peace to reign in the country. “Let us also pray for the peace of the country and give President Muhammadu Buhari the needed support and cooperation to enable him tackle the challenges facing the country. “I believe that the immunity of state governors should be removed, no governor needs immunity and if it is removed, this will help to check fraud, corruption and mismanagement,’’ he said.

Probe Maku For Deceiving Nigerians About Release Of Chibok Girls, Al-Makura

Gov. Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa State has called for the probe of the failure of Mr Labaran Maku to rescue the Chibok girls as the supervising Minister of Defence in the last administration. This is contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity ,Alhaji Tukur Ahmed, on Sunday in Lafia .

Maku-Al-Makura

The statement said the probe was necessary in the interest of justice and fairness to the parents and guardians of the 200 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno. According to the governor, the ongoing trial of the accused persons in the embezzlement of $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase should not exclude “those who allegedly collected money in the name of securing the release of Chibok girls but never did”.

Al-Makura noted that the investigation will go a long in revealing “how Maku, as Information Minister deceived Nigerians on the purported release of the Chibok girls”. “It was alleged that the former Minister also collected several millions of Naira under the guise that they were negotiating for the release of Chibok girls from Boko Haram”, he added.

He pointed out that Maku’s recent assurance that he will speak up on the $2.1bn arms deal is a ploy to draw public sympathy. The governor also challenged Maku to explain his role in the Ombatse and Baba Alakyo Saga over the killings of 86 security operatives while he was supervising the federal ministry of defence.

The statement commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to defeat Boko Haram, saying the insurgents are in disarray. It called on all Nigerians especially the residents of the North East to support “this patriotic and honest drive to bring lasting peace”.

Maku Instigated Jonathan Against North – Al-Makura

Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura has said the former minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, is responsible for pitching President Goodluck Jonathan against the North while in office, saying his divisive tendencies along ethnic and religious lines, helped fuel the recurrent crisis in Nasarawa State.

Maku, had at a press briefing in Abuja at the weekend, alleged among other things that innocent citizens had continued to be killed by gunmen as a result of what he described as the “insensitivity” in handling the security situation in the state by the state government which he claimed would have been addressed if he was sworn in as governor of the state in May, this year.

But in a swift reaction on yesterday, the Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Tukur, said it was rather unfortunate that Maku who had ignored invitations extended to him and other stakeholders on several occasions to brainstorm towards finding lasting solution to the communal crisis in recent past could make unguarded utterances when the state government has succeeded in overcoming the situation.

He alleged that the insecurity in the state in recent past became worse as there was an increase in the proliferation of arms and ammunition when Maku held sway as the supervising minister of Defence, insisting that the former minister should rather commend his boss for the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.

“We must make sure that now that he has shown his colour, he will continue failing for the rest of his life unless he retraces his steps back to the elders like us and we will forgive him.”

Maku is a Destroyer & Ungrateful- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the immediate past Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku,  as a destroyer and an ungrateful party man., The Nation reports.

Speaking at a re-conciliatory visit to PDP members who lost the primary elections in Niger State, the ruling party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Alhaji Yussuf Ayitogu, took a swipe at Maku for defecting to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ayitogu stated that Maku was on a mission to destroy the PDP in Nassarawa State with his defection APGA after he lost out in the party’s gubernatorial primaries in the state.

“Maku is a destroyer who wants to reduce the votes of the PDP in Nasarawa State. He is biting the finger that fed him. PDP made him what he is today, rising from commissioner to deputy governor and lately a minister.

“It is unfortunate that he (Maku) has defected to APGA which is nowhere in Nassarawa State.

“People who served under President Goodluck Jonathan are the ones betraying him. They should be called to order. Labaran Maku cannot win any election in Nassarawa State. He will be shown this in the February election,” He concluded.

President Goodluck Jonathan recently appealed to aspirants of the party who lost at the primaries to remain in party in the interest of democracy.
