Three more roundabouts to be removed in Lekki – Ambode

Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday said the government has concluded plans to remove three more roundabouts on Lekki-Ajah corridor to ease vehicular movement.

The governor assured that his administration will complete the ongoing construction of Ajah Flyover by the end of May 2017

Ambode, who spoke at Lagos House in Ikeja when he received the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited led by its Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Jeffrey Ewing, said the roundabouts would be removed starting from next week, adding that the action was in line with the resolve of government to totally eliminate traffic in the axis.

“I also like to use this opportunity to say that because of the impact that we have seen in the elimination of roundabouts in the Lekki axis, we have actually approved another exercise and starting from next week, we will commence the elimination of additional three roundabouts in the axis most especially Chevron, Igbo Efon and Third Roundabout. We believe doing that will totally eliminate traffic in that axis and we hope to also open the Ajah Flyover before the end of May,” Governor Ambode said.

He said since assumption of office, his administration had tried as much as possible to improve the business environment, and assured that government would continue to invest in security and infrastructure to make life comfortable for residents and investors.

“We have tried to improve services within the State and the area of operation of Chevron which is the Lekki axis is not left out. A few weeks back, we improved on the traffic management towards that axis and we believe that the move would also enhance the productivity of the people.

He noted that the essence of government is to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive, assuring that he would continue to do his best to provide a safe and sound environment.

“Security will be improved upon; we don’t think we have gotten to the ideal state but we will continue to expend resources efficiently on security to ensure that the businesses that come to Lagos and the ones existing in Lagos will continue to thrive,” he said.

Besides, Ambode commended Chevron Nigeria for the provision of jobs for people in the State, sound Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as well as being dutiful in the payment of taxes, and expressed readiness to partner with the organisation in the interest of the people.

Reports reaching us has it that Tanko Abdulateef, who stabbed his employer in Lagos and fled to Bali area in Taraba State where he was eventually tracked down and arrested. has started confessing.

Yesterday Tanko was paraded at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, while speaking, he admitted that he stabbed 50 year old Mabel Okafor, four time in the stomach at her apartment located at close 9, Victoria Garden City in Lekki on August 17, 2016.

While narrating what happened on that day, Tanko said that he had just finished cutting the flowers when Mrs. Okafor called him. According to him, an evil spirit moved him to stab her with the scissors and knife he used in cutting the flowers.

“I was employed in August 2016; I had not yet stayed up to a month when the incident happened. She agreed to pay me N18,000 at the end of the month. On that Wednesday, she had asked me to cut the flowers. When I was done, I went inside my room. There were only three of us in the apartment.

“She called me and I went inside the sitting room. I was with the knife and the scissors I had just used to cut the flowers. A spirit just came upon me and I stabbed her. She shouted my name and that was when I became conscious of what I had done.

“She was bleeding profusely. I had stabbed her in her stomach four times. When I realised that I had killed my employer, I packed some of her valuables and ran to my village in Taraba State the following day. I sat down at the doorsteps all night. I could not enter my room.

“Some of our neighbours, who were alerted by my boss’ noise, came around and asked what had happened. I lied to them that we saw a snake and she screamed. So they went back. I don’t know why I killed her. Something just came upon me.”

“I sold the three phones at N20,000 each in Taraba State because I needed money. I had not sold the clothes before I was arrested. My parents are dead, but I have two sisters. When I returned, I did not tell my family members anything. I didn’t kill her because of salary increment. We had both agreed on N18,000.”

Primary School Kids donate N2.5 million sanitary kits to soldiers fighting Boko Haram

Pupils of Children International School, Lekki in Lagos State, at an emotional event on Monday in Maiduguri, Borno State, donated sanitary kits worth about N2.5 million to soldiers fighting Boko Haram insurgents in North-east Nigeria.

The pupils raised the money for the items by forfeiting their lunch in appreciation of the troops’ sacrifices for the country.

The contribution was coordinated by a Lagos based non-governmental organisation known as Volt Club, which conveyed the items to Maiduguri on behalf of the pupils.

Leader of the delegation and Volt Club’s Head of Assesment, Bhila Khipani, said the donations were made by the pupils, following the club’s advocacy campaign calling young Nigerians to show supports for troops in the battle field.

“Volt Club is a voluntary organisation within Lagos with interest in charity, especially on issues concerning children and their educational needs,” said Khipani.

“This is just a token of appreciation from school children all the way from Lekki Phase 1 Lagos. It is a kind gesture coming from school children in times of celebrations like this.

“But the key message in this gesture is in urging all Nigerians to take this torch onward and do something to make a soldier smile.

“It may not be in this form; other Nigerians can do even more. Let everyone go out and think of what they can do to make a soldier happy by telling them they are all appreciated for the sacrifices they are making for the country,” he said.

Receiving the gift items on behalf of the soldiers, the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division Nigeria Army, Victor Ezugwu, said the gesture by the children brought him to experience his most emotional moment as an officer.

“On behalf of soldiers of the 7 Division Nigeria army, I want to thank you for this show of solidarity, brotherhood and camaraderie for our soldiers out there fighting Boko Haram,” Mr. Ezugwu, a brigadier-general, said.

“We have fought Boko Haram from the land areas and territories they had hitherto command as their caliphate; we have taken the battle right to them in Sambisa forest where we are now and we are trying to clear them out once and for all so that our peace can be total and whole.

“This is a very emotional moment for all of us that have been fighting Boko Haram; and of course the most emotional moment of my stay as a GOC.

“Children of ages 3, 4 and 5 years being able to remember that there are soldiers and commanding officers in the North-east fighting Boko Haram and laying down their lives, is quite commendable. Of course family members have lost their loved ones all because we want to keep peace in our father land”.

He said he was touched emotionally because the children’s kind donation came at a time some other Nigerians were allegedly trying to tarnish the image of the Nigerian Army.

“Some people are trying to paint us black and trying not to see anything good in our efforts to safeguards our nation. But we take it that God almighty will bless these children because they are very patriotic in their attitudes and behaviour. God will bless them and bless their parents”.

Officials of the Volt Club said they had presented 1000 sachet packs containing a unit of tissue paper, tooth paste, hand towel, shaving sticks, toothbrush, bars of soap, sanitary pads, chewing gum and recharge cards ranging from N1000, N500 and N200.

Each of the packs was worth N2500.

Lekki Gardens MD Richard Nyong, Detained At Panti Over Building Collapse

Following the collapse of a five-storey building under construction on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lekki on Tuesday, the Police on Thursday said Richard Nyong, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Gardens, the construction company behind the collapsed building, has been detained at Panti Police Station.

Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, Mrs. Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed Nyong’s arrest, said he will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

On Wednesday, Governor Ambode had ordered all Directors of Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited to
submit themselves to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, within the next twenty four hours or face immediate arrest.

Nyong complied with the directive and reported himself to the office of the Commissioner of Police in company of his lawyer, Mr. Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and was detained after interrogation.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State Government in the wake of the building collapse, revealed that preliminary reports and investigation, it was discovered that the collapsed building was served contravention notice for exceeding the approved floors and thereafter sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The government also discovered that in a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident of Tuesday which has led to the death of over 30 persons.

Governor Ambode who is said to be irked at the spate of building collapse in the state had vowed to wield the big stick so as to put a stop to the disturbing trend.

How Nigerian Police Officers Detained MD, Collected N500K Bail

A Managing Director in the Lekki area of Lagos, Mr. Abiye Karibi-Whyte, has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, to investigate his alleged abduction by the police and the N500,000 that was paid for his bail.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Karibi-Whyte, who alleged that he was apprehended by the police in the Lekki area for no justifiable reason, said he was taken to Awka, Anambra State, and detained for three days.

He added that he was made to pay N500,000 before he could secure his bail.

Our correspondent gathered that on Tuesday, April 28, Karibi-Whyte was called on the telephone to pick up a parcel in the Lekki area. However, it was learnt that when he got to the location, some policemen whisked him away after allegedly torturing him.

In the petition, dated May 6, Karibi-Whyte described the treatment he received from the policemen as harsh, adding that it made him felt that they were kidnappers.

He said,

“At about 5.30pm, I was called to pick up a DHL parcel by a caller whose phone number was 08178115226. However, when I got to the place, I was met by a man known as Jagaban, who introduced himself as a policeman. He slapped me and accused me of being a ritual killer.

“Two other armed men joined him and they beat me up. They handcuffed me and threw me in the back of my car with my driver. I kept asking them what I had done, but they told me to shut up. At a point, I was terrified as I was no longer sure they were policemen.

“They said they were heading for Ikeja. Later, I was told that I was not actually the one they were looking for and that they would let me go if I took them to a certain individual called Dapo Balogun, who was a man I knew.

“After passing the night in a cell, the policemen took me round Lagos the following day to find Balogun. I was given no access to my friends or family to know my whereabouts. Later that day they used my phone to call one of my friends, Yemi, who was picked up in the same manner.”

Our correspondent learnt that Balogun was later arrested by the operatives on that day, after raiding his residence.

Karibi-Whyte said after the police had apprehended the suspect, they still detained him and transferred him to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Awka, Anambra State.

He said,

“At about 3am on the third day, Dapo Balogun, six of his friends, Yemi, my driver and I were put into vehicles and taken to Awka, Anambra State.

“On April 30, we arrived in Awka, and thereafter, I was asked by the police team leader how much I was willing to pay to be released. I told him I had no money. He said if I could pay N500,000, he would let me go. He allowed me to reach my family on the telephone and they sent the money to the police.”

Our correspondent learnt that the family paid into an Ecobank account number 0672010144.

“The account number belonged to one Okafor Ikechukwu. I was asked to sign a bail bond after the payment and I was released. My car, however, remained detained at the police command.

“My three-day abduction has caused severe shock and distress to my family and friends. The policemen subjected me to torture. Please, kindly investigate this matter and bring the culprits to book,” Karibi-Whyte added.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Uche Eze, said Karibi-Whyte should make a formal report to the state Commissioner of Police.

He said,

“I have not heard of any report of such. If the complainant is very sure of what he is saying, let him write a petition to the Commissioner of Police or to the Police Public Relations’ office. I promise you that we will look into it.”

Lekki Robbery: 2,123 Policemen Were Securing Jonathan – Fashola

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has revealed that 2,123 policemen provided security for President Goodluck Jonathan while armed robbers raided a bank in Lekki, Lagos last week.

Fashola, who spoke at the Agricultural Food Value Chain held in Agege area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Tuesday said when the president came to Lagos last Thursday, while citizens were being robbed, the president was protected by 2, 123 security personnel.

“Let me be very clear, the president is entitled to every protection, he’s our president, but the question to ask is that; when you were being traumatised yesterday, where were these 2,123 men? Because you are also entitled to be protected. The reason why the president gets all that protection is so that he can protect all of us,” he said.

The governor also decried Monday’s protest march for Jonathan in Lagos by members of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC and other pro-Jonathan groups in which the protesters terrorised Lagosians while brandishing dangerous weapons.

“Yesterday, they also showed the difference between us when the supporters of the PDP and President Jonathan came out. You know on 7th of March this year, just about a week ago, the APC held a solidarity rally in Lagos. Did anybody attack you on that day? So, yesterday, they held their own, but what I heard, because I received telephone calls and text messages from residents who explained to me, I received emails.

“I am sorry for the pain and trauma they put you through because residents continuously complained yesterday that they were traumatised by those people who supposedly were carrying out a rally in support of the president and in support of their gubernatorial candidate, just kidding.

“So instead of canvassing for your votes and showing you why their service record is better, they were showing you knives, cutlass and dangerous weapons. Some residents phoned to say that they were banging on their cars. Let me remind all of us, that the work of a party and a government is to protect citizens and not to terrorize them,” he stated.

Fashola said for those who still said that they did not know what the issues in these elections were, Monday’s event brought one issue sharply in focus, which he said was the issue of security.

He stated that the peace and safety that “all of you have enjoyed for eight years is now at risk. You have seen the kind of people who support the other party on Monday, you have seen the kind of people who support their presidential and gubernatorial candidate, those are the people that you will see around them. Monday’s experience, may God forbid it, would be what you would experience till 2019.

“Unless you come out massively on March 28 and on April 11, that is the only way that God would forbid that kind of thing from continuing in Lagos. It is your vote that would change it. A vote for General Buhari would put to end this kind of abuse of state power. A vote for Ambode will continue the security that we have built and protected you for the past eight years.

Lekki Bank Robbery-We Know Who The Robbers Are – Police

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, weekend, said that the command had clue of who the robbers that stormed a second generation bank last Thursday, killing three policemen and a teenager, were, assuring that it would soon round them up.

Investigation as gathered had begun by joint crack detectives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS and those from the newly instituted Tactical Operation Unit.
The operatives as gathered would also spread their dragnet to neighbouring Benin Republic where the fleeing armed men were suspected to have taken refuge.

Impeccable police sources hinted that part of the on going investigation included the monitoring of the video footage of the robbery operation recorded by an onlooker.

Aderanti who was at the scene of the robbery incident, described the death of his men as unfortunate, adding that they (policemen ) were not even attached to the bank where the gunmen stormed but acted gallantly to prevent the hoodlums from carrying out their devilish act.
Also reacting to the development, Force Public Relations Officer, Ag. Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu told Vanguard;

‘’It’s a terrible development. We will see to the end of it. We must get them. You should know that for a long time we have not had that kind of bank robbery in Lagos State. That is why the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abbah, has given the command matching orders to re-strategise in order to ensure that it does not occur again.’’

Lekki Shooting: Many Feared Dead As Armed Men Rob FCMB

An unknown number of people have been killed following a bank robbery operation in Lagos. Eye witness say that a large number of men dressed in army uniform stormed the First City Monument Bank in Lekki late in the afternoon shooting sporadically.

Policemen on duty in a bullion van were said to have been shot dead as commuters scamper for safety, abandoning their vehicles. The bank is said to be located around the Lekki/Ikoyi bridge. The robbers are said to have fled on speedboat.
