Lagos NYSC Corps Urge Motorists to Obey Traffic Rules, Provide Zebra Crossing

On Wednesday, 15th March, 2017, Lagos Band CDs 2016 took to the streets of Lagos to show their dissatisfaction with the lackadaisical and unruly attitude of some Lagos drivers, who ignore traffic rules endangering the lives of other motorists and pedestrians.

One of the Corp members interviewed said “I see some people drive recklessly and I wonder if they have spare lives. Almost every now and then we see accidents been reported, cases of hit and run on social media platforms and everyone just move on like it is nothing”.

The Secretary of the NYSC Lagos Band who will like to remain anonymous said “The NYSC Lagos Band CDs 2016 decided not to fold hands but stand up for change and act on this issue that has taken lives by sensitizing and creating awareness to the careless attitude of some drivers.”

This music oriented Corp members started the awareness from Ikeja Local government, proceeded to Ikeja under bridge, towards LASUTH, passed through Old secretariat at Oba Akinjobi Way and finally settled at PWD Bus Stop along Agege Motor Road.

They played their drums and danced in their ceremonial attire as they sensitized the public to obey traffic rules and be mindful of road signs either as motorist or pedestrians by sharing handbill and mounting road signs.

On settling at PWD Bus Stop along Agege Motor Road, the Corp members mounted road signals and made zebra crossing that will enable pedestrians get to other end of the road safely.

This thoughtful action carried out by Corp member didn’t go down well with some Lagosians as they screamed and yelled at them because of the obstruction of flow of traffic, but all thanks to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ministry of Transportation Lagos State (MOT), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for their presence and intervention.

Keke NAPEP riders beat up LASTMA officer in Lagos.

Some commercial tricycle operators, popularly called Keke NAPEP, in Ikeja area of Lagos State yesterday allegedly attacked an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), simply identified as Mr. Oyekan.

He was attacked while on duty at Acme Road in Ikeja. Oyekan was later rescued by his colleagues and men of the Nigeria Police Force and taken to a hospital in Agege area of the state for treatment.

He sustained deep injury at the back of his head.

It would be recalled that last December, a commander of the agency, Mr. Bakare Olatunji, was lynched by an irate mob in the Liverpool, Apapa area of Lagos. Olatunji, who was the LASTMA Zonal Head in Apapa, had led a team of officials to the area in a patrol van to arrest erring motorists.

Tanker drivers, who parked their vehicles on the road fled on sighting the enforcement agents.

In the ensuing melee, a truck ran over an assistant driver (motor boy) while he struggled to escape an arrest. Unfortunately, he died on the spot.

Angered by the boy’s death, his friends regrouped and went on the rampage, killing Olatunji in the process.

300 LASTMA officials deployed for Lagos City Marathon

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said over 300 officials would be deployed for the Lagos City Marathon coming up on Saturday to ensure free flow of traffic in the state.

The 42 kilometres marathon which will host world athletes will start from the National Stadium, Surelere and ends at the Eko Atlantic.

At a press briefing on preparation for the event, the State’s Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Olarenwaju Elegushi, called on residents to support the government for successful hosting of the event.

According to him, traffic will be restricted on the day of the event adding that alternative routes have been created for motorists.

“It is our plan to mount and deploy adequate traffic diversion signs and personnel to monitor and montage traffic. The routes will be open as soon the last runner leaves each point to ensure the traffic is not held for too long,” Elegushi said.

He assured Lagos residents that government is committed to ensure that their programmes are not impaired during the event.

Good NEWS: LASTMA will no longer impound broken down vehicles

Motorists in Lagos can now heave a sigh of relief following the new directive announced by the management of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The new development as announced by the Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Nofiu Elegushi, stipulates that traffic officers attached to LASTMA can no longer impound broken down vehicles on Lagos roads.

According to Elegushi, who gave the directive, LASTMA officers should “immediately stop impounding and towing broken down vehicles.” Rather, the Commissioner said “LASTMA officials should lend a helping hand to owners of broken down vehicles.”

Elegushi, who charged officials to give the LASTMA a new lease of life, disclosed that “broken down vehicles should be towed to owners’ mechanic workshops and not LASTMA yards, which used to be the practice.”

Furthermore, he said owners of such vehicles should no longer be fined as was the usual practice. According to him, vehicle owners based on understanding should pay towing charges.

Elegushi explained that this feat would not only assist motorists out of a difficult situation, it would aid free flow of traffic by the prompt action of LASTMA operatives.

The commissioner urged the public to see LASTMA officials as friends and treat them as such. According to him, the LASTMA officials would be better appreciated, when owners of broken down vehicles are quickly assisted.

He, however, warned that broken down vehicles should not be repaired on the road. “Before enforcement is carried out in any area of the state, LASTMA officials should strategize for a better service delivery,” the Commissioner added.

Elegushi urged LASTMA officials to be acquainted with the state traffic law and properly supervise BRT lanes, which, according to him, are often use by other road users, especially commercial bus drivers.

According to Ambode, the appointment of Musa comes with immediate effect.

Prior to his appointment as the General Manager of LASTMA, Musa was formerly the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

Lagos Government condemns murder of LASTMA official

The Lagos State Government on Friday condemned the murder of an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) , Surajudeen Bakare on Thursday in Apapa area of the state.

The Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Adebayo Anofiu Eleguishi, said at a news conference that Bakare was a victim of jungle justice.

“The late Bakare was killed by some people who have forcefully taken over the roads to flout rules and regulations and take laws into their own hands, “he said.

Bakare, who was the Zonal Head of LASTMA in Apapa, was beaten to death by suspected commercial motorcycle riders and touts while trying to control traffic.

According to Eleguishi, contrary to reports, eyewitness accounts revealed that no LASTMA vehicle killed anyone before the incident; rather it was the driver of a tanker that killed his motor boy who was asleep under the vehicle.

Elegushi, who reiterated that Lagos was a law and order society, urged the Police to do a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to book.

“It is authoritative that the mob action is by tanker drivers, Okada riders and other persons who live around them.

“We must emphasise that LASTMA remains a routine activity designed to ensure free flow of traffic.

“Our officers must be accorded respect they very much deserve and in case of an infraction by any of them, there are due processes and mechanisms that redress those infractions,” Eleguishi said.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive officer of LASTMA, Mr Chris Olakpe, urged members of the public to support officials in ensuring free flow of traffic.

He said that that the authority had embarked on training and retraining of officers, and if there was any complaint, they could call the LASTMA Complaint Response Unit on 08129928646.

Jungle Justice: Angry Mob Stabs LASTMA Zonal Head To Death Over Accident

A mob lynched a commander of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Bakare Olatunji to death on Thursday after a motor boy was allegedly hit and killed by the traffic enforcers’ van.

Bakare was reportedly beaten to death by his attackers in the Apapa area of the state.

According to eye witness reports, a group of truck drivers parked their vehicles indiscriminately while relaxing and upon sighting a LASTMA van approach, took to their heels.

A motor boy was hit by the traffic agency’s van in the ensuing chaos as he made to escape. He died instantly.

The death of their member prompted the fleeing group of truck drivers to regroup and launch an attack at the LASTMA officials.

Bakare was beaten and stabbed to death in the process, while another official was injured.

“The drivers were relaxing around 10.30am when they saw a LASTMA van approaching. They felt the officials had come to arrest them for parking vehicles indiscriminately. So, they ran away. A motor boy, who was sleeping beside a tanker, was woken up by the commotion. Before he could escape from the spot, the LASTMA van hit him and he died instantly,” Punch quotes a witness, Uthman Salau as saying.

“One of the drivers, who saw the boy lying in a pool of blood, called his colleagues and they stormed the scene with cutlasses, bottles and all sorts of weapons. The officials fled with the van except their team leader (Olatunji). They stabbed him to death.”

A conflicting account of the incident however claimed Bakare and his men were in hot pursuit of a motorist when they accidentally knocked the motor boy down.

A LASTMA official said the men would normally not have gone for operations in the Apapa area but they had been accused of laxity in enforcing traffic law and tasked by the management to deliver.

“Ordinarily, they would not have gone for operations in that area. However, two weeks ago, the management was angry that we have not performed to expectation in terms of enforcement. Each zone was asked to generate N12m by December 19. So, we are under pressure to deliver. That is the reality we are battling with,” he said.

Lagos State Police have have begun investigations into the unfortunate incident.

Angry Mob In Lagos Beat Up LASTMA Officials For Punching Lagos Driver Into Coma

There was pandemonium on Wednesday at the Costain area of Lagos State as an official of the Lagos State Management Authority and a bus driver were reportedly beaten to a pulp.

Punch Metro learnt that officials of LASTMA had allegedly apprehended the bus driver at the Costain bus stop, for allegedly violating a traffic rule.

It was alleged that an argument ensued between the driver, his conductor and the officials. In the ensuing scuffle, a LASTMA official allegedly punched the driver and he slumped.

A mob was reported to have barricaded the road in protest as the driver lay on the floor, foaming in the mouth.

The mob reportedly vandalised a LASTMA patrol car which drove into the protesters at the time, beating up the officials.

They were said to have mobilised and also attacked the LASTMA office in the area and vandalised vehicles in the yard before the intervention of policemen from the Iponri division.

A witness, Ibrahim Adisa, said the incident happened around 9am.

He said, “We saw that the LASTMA officials held the bus driver at the junction for breaking traffic rule. The man did not release the vehicle to them, which started an argument. The driver and the conductor then started fighting the LASTMA men.

“One of the LASTMA officials put his hand in the pocket and brought out a ring which he used to hit the driver. The man fell and started foaming in the mouth.  The officials then took his bus into their yard and left him on the ground.

“A mob barricaded the road and vandalised a LASTMA patrol car that came in that time. They beat up all the officials in the car. After that, they carried the man’s body into the LASTMA’s office and chased out the workers.”

Punch Metro learnt that the driver was later taken to a hospital after the police arrived to quell the unrest.

A motorcycle rider said the situation would have been worse but for the intervention of the police.

“Traffic was at a standstill and the hoodlums were looking for LASTMA officials or any government official to attack,” he added.

As of 3pm when Punch correspondent left the area, no traffic official was in sight as police patrol vehicles mounted surveillance in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding investigations were ongoing.

She said, “Yes, I can confirm that LASTMA officials impounded a vehicle and the driver and his conductor engaged the LASTMA officials in fisticuffs, which led to two losing consciousness. The two are the driver and a LASTMA official. They were both rushed to the hospital where they are currently recuperating. Investigation has commenced into the matter.”

The spokesperson for LASTMA, Mr. Mahmud Hassan, in a statement, denied that the driver was beaten by an official of the agency.

He explained that some hoodlums, who were attempting to free the driver’s bus, invaded the premises of the agency and vandalised vehicles.

He said, “The commercial bus was apprehended for illegal picking and dropping of passengers in the Costain area. The commercial bus was subsequently taken to the nearest yard of the agency at Iponri for booking.

“However, in a bid to circumvent the law and retrieve the vehicle from LASTMA’s yard, the driver mobilised friends and hoodlums, who attacked the Iponri office of the agency. They injured our personnel and damaged vehicles in the yard. However, when the driver’s action did not yield the desired result, he stripped himself naked and created a scene in order to draw the sympathy of unwary members of the public.

“When the act failed, his friends and hoodlums put him in a wheelbarrow with a clear intention to cause commotion and breakdown of law and order.”

Hassan said two of the hoodlums had been arrested and would be arraigned in court.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bashir Braimah, according to the statement, said no amount of violence would make the agency to shy away from its statutory responsibility.

#Pausibility: Ambode and The Burden of Continuity by Adebayo Coker.

Akinwumi-Ambode-350x253

Two Sundays ago, Mr Jimi Disu, the host of The Discourse With Jimi Disu, dedicated the whole of his one hour phone-in radio programme to discussing the possible solutions to the problems Lagos State is seemingly faced with in recent times. It is expected that some people will see such an eye-opening discourse as a threat to their political hegemony, but I found it incredulous that someone will resort to name calling in the guise of doing a rejoinder to the many elicitations by Lagosians through the programme. JD is an egbon to ju agbalagba lo and he was never rude to anyone on that particular programme, nor at anytime on his radio show.

Anyways, I would not want to deify nonsense and its peddler, hence I will summarise the so-called ‘response’ as one of those cries of insanity. It will take the deepest level of insanity for anyone to agree that Lagos is working as it is presently. It is that level that so many of us will not slither to. Nobody is just kidding here.

This will be my second note after: #Pausibility: Ambode, Lagos Is A State Of Excellence!

Governance is usually measured based on deliverables of tangibles and intangibles. Physical and social infrastructures are tangibles because they are what the people can see: Roads, water, hospitals, etc fall under this divide. For the intangibles, both social and economic policies occupy this divide; if I may add: security of lives and properties. These are things that are felt. Any Lagosian can attest, we took both almost for granted under the immediate past administration, hence, the nostalgia.

During the campaigns, we were sold a first class graduate, a chartered Accountant per excellence, a guy who self-financed his education. A man who almost went through his childhood shoeless like the former President. He was not a talk-active but his action-packed posters caught some people’s interest. Even when dust was raised about his ancestry, many ignored it with the faith that we are certain of continuity of the changes that were heralded by BRF. But little did we know that the clout that governed Lagos till the morning of 29th May, 2015 took flight immediately Fashola left Marina; instead a Jonathanian spirit gained the Right of Occuppancy in Lagos House. It is the ilk of Jonathan that will serenade their audience with: I had no shoe, get into office, and raise the hopes of the people because they believe his humble background will make him align with the common man, but instead of stepping up to the plate, steep deeply down the curve due to incapacity and intelligence. The first could be pardoned but when arrogance will not make you call out or listen to people that can help you out of your quagmire even when they are available, then the latter cannot be overlooked. I see no reason why Fashola should not be reached out to at this time. One thing I know, Fashola would not want his town razed because he was not born in Ondo. He gave his words when he was leaving, he said he is always a phone call away and he never gives his word and go back on it, although, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born.

A friend of mine would always say that this guy he is looking at doesn’t strike him as someone who has the smartness of Lagos to govern Lagos but I will always argue that the guy does not need to do more than is expected (Fashola’s stroke can only be Fashola’s), he only has to follow a path that is already paved with shinning light. But when a son inherits a well-maintained archetype of his father but decides to remodel the structure and pulls down the edifice, first of all, before contacting the draughtsman or considering the financial implication of such a task, then such a child doesn’t deserve anyone’s praise.

Why would any sane person disrupt the easy flow of events?

If one wants to know how a state is governed, test the impulse of the commercial bus drivers then you will know the volition of the state Governor. The directive to LASTMA of non-impoundment of vehicle even when such a vehicle is caught in the act of grievous violation of traffic rules is meant for a society that can boast of adequate biometric of citizenry and verifiable vehicular databank. The insanity of the commercial drivers that followed that directive threw Lagos back into several decades of incivility. We know you may have some good intention beyond your usual populist approach( populist: like the one that was reported that you went on vigil with the police in one of those dark spots in Lagos), but that good intention was immediately eroded, that even the Danfo drivers themselves became nostalgic of the metropolis they had just few months ago. Iya Ramota with her lambebe sef dey ask if the government for Lagos no be APC to APC again? Any sane mind expected Lagos to run on Plug-And-Play. It takes more than executive pronouncement or recitation of Riot’s Act to curb the madeness of Lagos traffic.

We were told that when the OBJ-led Government saw the need to muscle Lagos in order to frustrate the existence of the additional local government areas created by Bola Ahmed-led Lagos State government by not releasing the fund accruing to Lagos state from the Federation Account, Ambode designed the IGR masterpiece which is quintessential in the nation. The Fashola-led administration enjoyed the plan and he was able to perform to the level that Lagosians took both the tangibles and the intangibles of governance for granted. We have not been told the people have refused to pay their taxes because me I dey pay my tax. Till few months ago, I drove on better roads well lit at night with refreshing greenery greeting me here and there. I felt like a cosmopolitan in my city without having to be in Dubai or in any of the cities of the Queen or Obama’s lane before I savour the beauty of nature. Today our dear green is gone and I don’t think they will return in a long time to come. Hardly would one drive for ten minutes without your car having to screech because our roads are punctuated with potholes at alarming intervals that one would wonder what happened to those yellow-overall guys we used to see blocking those deathtraps few months ago . Anytime I come to such a stop, I reflexively jam my palms and say: Orisa bo le gbemi… Apart from the need to have a very sharp headlight for night drive in Lagos recently, you also must make sure your car cooling system is working fine. Bereft of the two, you either get buried in the hole or get brazenly robbed that you would suddenly realize what those Armoured police vehicles stationed at various points few months back meant.

As the Chief Security Officer of the state, Mr Fashola never for one day gave Lagos the excuse that he couldn’t curb the menace of robbery because the security agencies were not under his control. Fine, he complained of inadequacy of men of the security agencies but never did I read where he opened up the State to the robbers of whatever operation level on the premise that it is the job of the Commissioner of Police to secure the state. Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) was even instituted to assist the security agencies in carrying out their duties smoothly and we all were better off.

What happened to those novelties?

I am fortunate to live close to a Water Works but for several days now I can only patronize meruwa. Few months ago my tap would not go dry this long. I was recently in the office of one of the senior members of your cabinet, we could not get water to drink. The excuse was that they had to go to the Office of the Deputy Governor to make requisition before they can refill their water bottles. What pettiness!

That someone run to the press claiming that they curbed wastages does not mean it is not a ploy for greater ‘wacking’. Now, we are asking: who sent you to save money meant for service delivery? Watch out, because soon, the ‘wacking’ will start vociferously like no man’s business and if you raise any question, the answer is there: Weren’t you the one that told us to spend?

We should stop concentrating on people’s degrees but rather, we should screen their pedigree. Fashola’s pedigree was a no-nonsense man, even as the CoS to Asiwaju. But the story of someone being pushed out of service was politically quelled with some old good story. The unfolding events point to a vendetta: the striking move to undo Fashola at all cost.

If you must undo what is good, replace it with what is better or put in its stead what is best. The way you are going about it may spell your political doom regardless of who your godfathers are. You are allowing the service that you were employed for to suffer.

I wonder the level of excellence you have brought in.
