Police arrests herbalist who was paid N700,000 to aid dreaded kidnapper Vampire’s escape

The police high command has arrested the most trusted herbalist of the late kidnap-for-ransom kingpin, Henry Chibueze, popularly known as Vampire, who had in the last few years operated with terror in the Southeastern and South-South states.

According to police sources at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the 55-year-old ‘medicine man’, Iweajuo Gad, was arrested in his shrine at Asoeme Town in Aba, Abia State on Sunday by the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

According to the source, “in continuation of the operations in mopping up Vampire’s gang members in the Southeast, IRT operatives arrested one Iweajuo Gad from Asoeme Town in Aba, Abia South Local Council. The suspect is the number one herbalist of Vampire and many other groups of armed robbers and kidnappers.

“He further confessed to interrogators that he led three herbalists to perform special rituals to secure Vampire’s rescue from the High Court in Owerri. He told detectives that the names of seven prison service officers were brought to him by Vampire’s brother to perfect the rituals that would disorganise and destabilise the officers during the rescue.  They were given N200,000 for the ritual and one week after the successful rescue, Vampire sent N500,000 to him.”

Vampire, a notorious kidnapper in South East and South South axis, was killed in a shootout with the police last week Thursday. According to the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police, Henry Chibueze, aka Vampire, was killed at Omu Awa forest, in Ikwerre, Rivers State.

Chibueze, who was paraded by the DSS before the state governor in 2015 admitted to have carried out several kidnappings in the state and beyond before his arrest. After Chibueze’s escape in January, Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, announced a N5 million bounty for information that would lead to his arrest.

I got N2 million for kidnap of Isheri Estate Secretary – Kidnapper

The alleged mastermind of the kidnap of Lagos Isheri North Estate Secretary, Dayo Adekoya, Joseph Omoni, has been arrested. He was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Abba Kyari.

The 38-year-old suspect, who hails from Ajapa community, Ese in Ondo State, was arrested in Century Village, Ogijo town, in Ogun State. The suspect was alleged to have also participated in the kidnap of the Nigerian Turkish school girls and officials and also the December kidnapping operation at Ikorodu, where a popular TV presenter, Aisha Ali-Balogun, was killed.

The suspect confessed that he only got N250,000 from the ransom paid for the release of the Isheri North estate secretary. “I got N250,000 from the ransom because the sum paid was too small, but for the Nigerian Turkish International College, I got N2 million. I was also involved in the kidnap on Ikorodu Road, where Aisha Balogun was killed. We didn’t know her until we read in the papers that she was a TV presenter. I got about N1 million from that ransom.

In another development, abductors of the two members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and five farm workers of Eliasa Livestock farm, who were kidnapped in Igbodu area of Epe on Tuesday have demanded the sum of N50 million as ransom from families of their victims.

The gunmen, it was learnt, contacted the manager of the farm using the phone of one of the victims yesterday and asked for a whooping N50 million for their seven victims.

According to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 command, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, “we are going to rescue the victims alive. We are doing everything to police that area; but the major problem in that part of the state is that the area is porous. It gives room for kidnapping to thrive.

“We will police that area 24 hours every day but my advice to business owners and school operators is that they should be security conscious and do their background checks on anybody they want to employ. We are also going to do our own job to see to the release of the victims without paying a dime to the abductors,” he said.

A senior police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “On February 14, around 4a.m. after unrelenting follow up by IRT with technical intelligence unit, one of the Isheri Estate secretary and Turkish school kids kidnappers, Joseph Omoni, was arrested.”

The police officer said one kingpin simply identified as ‘chairman’ has also been identified to be hiding in the same Century Village at Ogijo, but assured that he would soon be arrested as detectives has condone off the area. He said the police were making effort to apprehend other members of the gang.

Supreme Court Affirms Kidnapper’s Death Sentence

The Supreme Court has re-affirmed the death sentence passed upon a notorious kidnapper- Ayiere Godsgift ( Alias Alex) who kidnapped a teenager from school and murdered him.
In a unanimous decision, Friday, a five-man panel of the apex court headed by Justice Suleiman Galadima held that the appeal against the death sentence filed by Alex lacked merit.

Other members of the panel are Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, Nwali Sylvester Ngwuta, Musa Dattijo Muhammed and John Inyang Okoro, all Justices of the Supreme Court.
Alex was convicted and sentenced to death March 17, 2010 by the Cross Rivers State High Court, Calabar judicial division.
He appealed unsuccessfully to the Court of Appeal, Calabar before appealing further to the Supreme Court in Abuja.
In a related development,  the Supreme Court also Friday  unanimously re-affirmed the five-year jail term or an option of fine slammed on one Afor Lucky who was convicted for rape by the High Court of Delta State, Oleh Division.

Soldiers In Aba Kill Kidnapper, Arrest 2 Members Of His Gang, Including A Lady

Soldiers of the 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, stationed at Asa in Ukwa West local government area of Abia State have shot dead a kidnapper, arrested two members of his gang, including a lady, and rescued a female victim.

Vanguard gathered that an Aba-based business woman, Mrs. Rita Anaekwe, was last Sunday night abducted at her residence on Anaekwe Street, Umuleta village, Obinkwu in Ukwa West local
government area.

Family sources said the hoodlums gained entry into the house through the back fence and shot dead the family dog before gaining access to the main building.

The sources hinted that when the kidnappers got to the lady, whose husband was said to have traveled, they demanded for cash, gold bracelets and other valuables from the woman which she gave them. After collecting the items, the hoodlums were also said to have demanded for the key of the family’s Nissan Pathfinder Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, with which they whisked the woman away.

News reaching KDB say Soldiers of the 144 battalion who were alerted to the incident, trailed the kidnappers to their hideout.
In the ensuing gun duel, one of the kidnappers was reportedly shot dead, while two others, including a female member, was arrested.

A military source said Anaekwe was rescued unhurt, while her vehicle was later recovered by men of the Police Area Command, Aba.

Speaking with journalists, Anaekwe commended the efforts of the soldiers in rescuing her and the vehicle a few hours after the incident.

Commanding Officer of the 144 battalion, Lt. Col. Kasim Umar Sidi, who confirmed the incident, said investigations were ongoing and promised that fleeing members of the gang would soon be arrested.
