Kerry Washington Reveals Her Best Beauty Secrets

What’s your everyday makeup look?

When I’m not working, I let my skin breathe, so I just do concealer, mascara, and a sheer lip color. Occasionally I’ll mix a drop of foundation into my moisturizer. I’m a consultant for Neutrogena, and I worked with them to add more shades to their Healthy Skin foundation. I tested them on set and on the red carpet — it was a real process to come up with the formulas, so I’m very proud to wear them!

What’s your best beauty skill?

I know my own lips better than anyone — at least anyone who’s putting makeup on me. I might not know them better than my husband! I line my lips with a pencil that matches my lipstick, then I slick on the color and it doesn’t bleed.

You stopped chemically straightening your hair years ago. What made you decide to do that?

I’d been relaxing my hair since I was a little girl, so part of it was just wanting to see what would happen if I didn’t. Quitting has been such a time-saver, and my hair feels much healthier now. It’s been fun getting to know my real curls.

You have incredible skin. What’s your regimen?

I’m a firm believer in double cleansing: I use a facial wipe to take off my makeup, then I wash my skin. Right now I’m pregnant, so I’ve stopped using retinol and cut back on products with salicylic acid, since that’s what doctors advise. I’m so relieved that hyaluronic acid is safe during pregnancy — I can’t live without Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel.

You collaborated with OPI on their fall nail colors, all of which have Washington, D.C.-inspired names. Did you help create those as well?

I did, which is every girl’s dream! The one we’re most excited about is We the Female. When I spoke at the Democratic National Convention four years ago, I talked about how the words “We the people” didn’t include a lot of individuals in this country — women, people of color — when they were first written. We’ve all fought to be a part of that phrase, so having a polish called “We the Female” felt perfect to empower women. Plus, it looks great on every skin tone.

What do you hope to teach your 2-year-old daughter, Isabelle, about beauty as she grows up?

I want to set the example for Isabelle that my mom set for me. I never felt as though she put on makeup to fix a sense of insecurity or impress others; she did it just to feel good. I want my daughter to know that she deserves to feel pretty but then let her decide what that means for her. It’s important to have the courage to be the best version of yourself and not try to look like anyone else.

Kerry Washington & Hubby Welcome Son, Caleb Kelechi

Scandal star, Kerry Washington and husband Nnamdi Asomugha welcomed their second child, son Caleb Kelechi Asomugha, on Wednesday, Oct. 5, E! News reports.

Caleb joins big sister Isabelle Amarachi, 2.

“Kerry was so thrilled to be a mom of two. Having Isabelle changed her life for the better and she was so excited to expand the family,” a source tells PEOPLE. “Pregnancy treats her well! She ate very healthy and knows how to take care of her body.”

Washington and former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Asomugha were married in July 2013, and announced their second child was on the way in April. The actress, 39, made her baby bump debut at the Met Gala in May, wearing a sequined Marc Jacobs gown and sporting purple tresses.

Kerry Washington On The Cover Of Self Magazine

Kerry Washington is the cover girl for the September issue of self Magazine.

The main reason Washington likes to work out before most of Los Angeles wakes up is that she wants to get home to her husband, former pro football player Nnamdi Asomugha, and their 17-month-old daughter, Isabelle. “I try to get it in so I can be back with my kid early,” she says. 3

Truth be told, she’d prefer to be cuddled up with her two loves and their shih tzu–Yorkie mix, Josie, who is undoubtedly asleep at the foot of their bed. But Washington never misses a workout. “I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to,” she says. “It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better.”

Kerry Washington Gives Powerful, Moving Speech at 2015 GLAAD Media Awards.

Kerry Washington For Marie Claire April 2015.

Karry Washington on the cover of Marie Claire April 2015, talks about family, fashion and lots more.

On privacy: “Earlier in my career I was much more super-sharey. There were moments when I wanted to process things that were happening to me more privately, and I didn’t have the space to do it, because once you let people in, they’re in and you don’t get to say, ‘Oh, I want this for myself.’”

On fashion: “I just put myself in a boot camp of figuring it out—and realized that I really loved it. I guess because I came to it later in life, I realized, ‘Oh, going to a fashion show is like going to the opening of Degas at the Met or going to see Swan Lake.’”

On family: “I just want [daughter Isabelle] to know that she’s heard. Really heard, because I feel like that is what we all really want. When I think about any of the missteps in my life that I’ve made, all of which I’m grateful for, it’s because I just so wanted to be truly seen and heard for who I am and was afraid I wasn’t or wouldn’t be. I see you, I hear you, I’m with you as you are.”

On Olivia Pope: “I don’t think I consciously say, ‘What would Olivia Pope do?’ but there’s a new thread of belief in my own capacity that I think comes from her. She makes it happen. She figures it out. She fixes it.”
