Ensure Spiritual Growth Of Masses – Agbaje Tells Catholics

Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has urged members of the Catholic Church to nurture the spiritual growth of Nigerians so that they can be closer to God.

Agbaje made the call at the tree planting exercise of St. Raphael Catholic Church, Anthony Village, Lagos yesterday.

According to him: “Planting a seed is also a spiritual exercise. A seed that you plant can also touch lives. Catholics are guilty of something, we don’t plant seed, and maybe we feel we don’t want to evangelise, or we don’t need to preach the message.”

Delivering a keynote address, Dr. Newton Jibunoh, said there is the need to replenish the earth as man’s activities have reduced the number of trees, which is a major factor in climate change.

Meanwhile, the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for genuine spirituality among Nigerians as exemplified by Mother Theresa.

Obi stated this yesterday at the Vatican City after the canonisation of Mother Theresa.

He said the life of St. Theresa of Calcutta was an illumination of service to God through service to the people.

Jimi Agbaje Is A Boy, He Can’t Be PDP Chairman – Babatope

A former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, on Wednesday said governors under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are trying to destroy the party through their actions.

Speaking shortly after an emergency National Executive Committee meeting in Port Harcourt after the disruption of its National Convention by the police and soldiers, Babatope, who is a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) said the governors are doing all within their means to foist a former governorship candidate of the party in Lagos state, Jimi Agbaje, on them as the national chairman of the party.

Speaking further, Babatope said a fresh battle has started in the PDP which the governors and those scheming to cause the downfall of the party will never forget in their life.

The governors want to destroy the party. They are bringing a boy (Agbaje) who has not been a member of the party for two years as candidate and they want to do everything within their power to foist him on us as national chairman. But God has dealt with them”.

A fresh battle has just started within the PDP and it is a battle they will never forget in their life. We are coming back to Lagos to sit down and analyse what is happening to PDP. We will point accusing fingers at those who want to destroy our party,” he said.

Ambode: Lagosians Have Chosen Service – Gov. Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that Lagos residents have chosen service, competition and choice over very banal patronage a few weeks to an election by voting for All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, even as he urged the governor-elect to stay connected with the people.

Babatunde Raji Fashola

Fashola, in his reaction at the Lagos House, Marina after the formal declaration of Ambode as winner of the state governorship poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), commended residents for keeping faith with the model of common widespread development that gives people the dignity to compete and be the best that they can be rather than be a model of patronage a few days to an election.

The governor added that the people have chosen service, competition and choice over very banal patronage a few weeks to an election.

He expressed happiness that “all the hard work in the last eight years has been vindicated and that the people of Lagos with this mandate to Ambode have connected with the choice and model of governance and have chosen the accelerated development where one doesn’t need to know anybody before he gets an opportunity.”

On his advice to governor-elect, Fashola said he would not advise him in the open rather his advice for him would largely be privately given and that the important thing is that he should stay connected to the people.

Earlier in a tweet on the declaration of the results, Fashola had tweeted; “Lagos wins. Congrats Ambode. Well done Jimi. Eko oni baje ooo”.

Lagos Gov: This Is My Second And Last Attempt – Jimi Agbaje

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the governorship elections for Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, has expressed satisfaction with the results announced on Sunday, in which the All Progressives Congress candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, was declared winner.

He, however, stressed that if there were issues with the process, his party would seek redress through the appropriate channel.

Mr Ambode polled 811,994 votes to defeat Mr. Agbaje, who scored 659,788 votes.

The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, said Mr. Ambode of the APC, having satisfied the requirement of the law, securing at least 25 per cent of votes in all local governments and scoring the highest number of valid votes cast, is declared winner.

In his reaction to the outcome, Mr. Agbaje said: “We ran a race. There will be winners and there will be losers. As good sportsman, we accept it as true leaders. That is the only way to go.

“Having accepted it, if we do feel cheated and that there are substantial issues to be raise, then we will follow due process. That is how it should be. But definitely, violence, abuse and all will not be an issue”.

The PDP flag bearer, who was speaking with Channels Television in Lagos, also said that he would not run for the governorship of the state again having failed in his two attempts to secure the peoples’ mandate.

“I have tried once. This is the second one and the last one. I am not going to run again. For me, there are many ways to be of service to your people. I have been of service in different ways. I am happy with what I have done for my people. Being a governor is one way I can contribute.

“I will find other ways to be of service to my people”, he said.

Oba Akiolu’s ‘Death Threat’ Against Igbos Was An Honest Joke – Atueyi

A Lagos-based lawyer Chukwudi Atueyi, who was present at the meeting between the Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu and some Igbos where he made the infamous ‘death threat’, yesterday, gave an account of what transpired at the meeting.

According to Atueyi, the uproar was uncalled for as the Oba’s statement was not directed at the whole Igbos in Lagos but he spoke jokingly to his Igbo friends that visited him.

“All the Eze Ndi Igbo honorary in Lagos went to pay HRM solidarity visit on Sunday and I was fortunate to be among those present at the said meeting. What the Oba said was fully and simply directed to only the Igbos present at the meeting who his majesty considers to be very close to him and should understand him well enough.

“You know when one talks to his very close friends and subjects, he tends to be very free with them, so he was being very free with those present at the meeting and wanted us to realize how serious and close he takes us and our votes, because he cannot imagine us giving him our words only to turn back and do the very opposite.

“He did not force us to the meeting, we were the ones that went to him on solidarity visit, so it would be very evil of us to only go and deceive him there. He only jokingly (at least as it appeared to me then) warned the people present at the meeting who he considers his own people. The said warning that we are supposed to be very conversant with since we have all the “Ëze Ndi Igbo” present there, as that was not the first time we visited him. We are all already aware of the Yoruba culture and understood perfectly what he meant. There was no specific place he referred to all the Igbos in Lagos.

“He was only addressing the Igbos with him present there whom he considers his own people and he simply observed his culture which we all quite understood and this explains why there was applause and laughter at the end of his speech. We were expected to, thereafter, talk to our people in civilized manner to convince them and canvass for their votes if we truly believe we are capable of doing so.

“The tradition of lagoon water threat was directed only to those present at the meeting as culture demands. Though he appeared serious but we all understood it as a joke, that was why we all applauded him and made fun of it there.

“So I suspect serious politics at play here. I wouldn’t know who recorded the speech and decided to play politics with it. It is most unfair to his majesty to be portrayed in this manner and I think I owe it as a duty to speak up before things get out of hand,” Atueyi said.

‘I Am Ready To Drag Oba Of Lagos To ICCJ’ – Dr. Josef Onoh

SON of former governor of old Anambra State, Chief C.C Onoh, Dr. Josef Onoh has vowed to drag the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu to the International Criminal Court of Justice, ICC over his alleged statement in which he warned that any Igbo resident in his domain who dares to vote against the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode in Saturday’s poll in Lagos will die.akiolu-obj

Onoh, reacting to the threat, described the Oba’s utterance as “a grievous incitement against the Igbos in Lagos”.

According to him, “let it be known that whether Oba Akilou’s threat come to fruition or not, I have concluded to take him to the ICC where he will keep company to the like Charles Taylor and answer to human right charges that will be preferred against him”.

He stated that Oba Akiolu by his treat of sinking Ndigbo into the lagoon if they vote against APC in the April 11governorship election for Lagos State and “inflammatory comment” that should be condemned.

He therefore urged his fellow Igbo brothers and sisters to exercise their fundamental right and vote for whom they want irrespective of the threat.

“I urge all Lagosians and indeed the entire Nigerians to come out in mass on Saturday to vote for candidates of their choice irrespective of party affiliation or tribe”, he stated. .

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu was quoted as having warned that any Igbo resident who vote against the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode in Saturday’s poll in Lagos will die.

Akiolu, who summoned all Eze Ndigbo in Lagos State to his palace on Sunday warned that he would not have anyone or Igbo men stop Ambode from becoming governor.

“On Saturday, if any one of you goes against Ambode who I picked, that is your end. If it doesn’t happen within seven days, just know that I am a bastard and it’s not my father who gave birth to me.

“Jonathan is my son and I speak to him every day, by the grace of God, I am the owner of Lagos for the time being. This is an undivided chair. The palace belongs to the dead and those coming in the future.

On Saturday, if anyone of you, I swear in the name of God, goes against my wish that Ambode will be the next governor of Lagos State, the person is going to die inside this water.

“I am not ready to beg you. Nobody knew how I picked Ambode. Jimi is my blood relation and I told him that he can never be governor in Lagos for now. The future belongs to God.

I am not begging anybody, but what you people cannot do in Onitsha, Aba or anywhere, if you do what I want, Lagos will continue to be prosperous for you, if you go against my wish, you will perish in the water,” he stated.

10 Reasons To Vote Ambode As Lagos Governor By El-Rufai

Nasir El-Rufai, the former FCT Minister, showed concern over the fate of Lagos state, as the April 11 governorship election starts in less than a week.

El-Rufai (APC), who himself faces off Mukhtar Ramalan Yero (PDP) in Kaduna polls next Saturday, took to social media for sending an advice to Lagosians.

Below are the 10 reasons why the APC must remain in power, as seen by El-Rufai:

1. The Federal Government owes Lagos several billions of Naira. The Buhari administration and the Lagos state government shall achieve a better understanding on the issue if the future governor is the APC member too.

2. An agreement on the use of older governmental buildings may be achieved easier. Urban renewal and building of new towns may commence. Something similar has been done during the Shagari’s presidency.

3. The president and the new governor of Lagos may agree on a special status of ‘economic capital of Nigeria’ for the metropolis.

4. Lagos has more chances to get preferences from the Federal Government, as about 70% of value added tax, collected nationwide, originates from Lagos.

5. Lagos hardly benefit from ecological funds even though it needs it more than any other state.

6. Buhari and the APC administration in Lagos will work to achieve uninterrupted, 24/7, power supply in Lagos within 2 years.

7. According to El-Rufai, the PDP’s ability to follow the trend of progress is doubtful.

8. Federal roads and bridges in Lagos need rehabilitation.

9. All tribes are represented in Lagos and the social facilities are stretched thin.

10. Prosperity of Nigeria is tied to the prosperity of Lagos. This is common sense politics.

The APC guber candidate in Kaduna state reminded that the PDP candidate for Lagos, Jimi Agbaje, had once urged Lagosians to “vote for the PDP to enjoy FG’s benefits”. “But the PDP will not be in charge anymore!” El-Rufai noted.

The control of Lagos is crucial for the two biggest political forces in Nigeria, the APC and the PDP. It is really hard to predict who of the governorship candidates will triumph.

The March 28 presidential election showed a slight advantage of the APC: 792,460 vs 632,327  of votes in favour of APC’s Buhari. However, this does not prove the PDP has no chances at all, as the margin was not that big, just 11.2%.

Victory For PDP In Lagos Would Free Lagosians From Oppression – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Friday in Lagos that victory for the Peoples Democratic Party in the upcoming general elections would free Lagos residents from oppression.

He stated this when the leaders of market women groups, known as Iyalojas, in Lagos and environs, paid him a solidarity visit at the State House, Marina, Lagos.

Jonathan, who was reacting to the complaint of high-handedness and witch-hunting made by the market women against the All Progressives Congress-led Lagos State Government.

He told the market women, and indeed, all traders in the country that the PDP administration would provide the enabling environment for them to ply their trades.

“Our victory at the polls will free all Lagos traders from oppression. You need to be free; we will remove Lagos from bondage,’’ he said.

He commended the women for supporting his re-election bid and urged them not to be intimidated by their opponents.

The President added, “I have listened to you; you have been carrying the PDP flag; you have been humiliated but you still marched on.

Fashola Accuses Jimi Agbaje of Tax Evasion

Lagos – Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, has accused Jaykay Pharmacy, owned by the governorship candidate of the PDP, Jimi Agbaje of owing the state N1.6 million as unpaid land use charges, Sun reports

Fashola made the disclosure at the 8th Annual Lagos State taxation Stakeholders’ Conference held in Ikeja. Fashola, who explained that Land Use Charge was a consolidated tax combining ground rent and tenement rate, said tax is prescribed by the 1999 constitution. It states that it shall be the duty of every citizen to declare its income to the appropriate and lawful agency; and pay the required tax promptly.

The governor declared that the pharmacy paid LUC in 2013 and 2014 because the management and the candidate of the PDP realized that the election would be holding in 2015.

With Akinwunmi Ambode Lagos will Be Fine – @Lanre_Olagunju

The phenomenal transformation Lagos has encountered in recent years is basically due to the brilliant heads that have governed the state. For the next gubernatorial polls, superficially looking at the calibre of the top two gubernatorial candidates, one can hastily say that Lagos, most likely will just be fine with any of them.

But considering the fact that democracy magnifies the essence of political decision-making, and punishes electorates when they decide not to look beyond the nose when taking political decisions; for that singular fact, I advice that Lagosians get their facts right to ensure developmental continuity in Lagos. Lagos can’t settle for less at this point, anyone replacing Fashola must have adequate experience to occupy that seat, not just any brilliant technocrat who is passionate about delivering Lagos to the People’s Democratic Party.

During an interview conducted by the convener of Good Governance Group (3G), Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was asked to shed light on the leadership problem in Africa, and some of his responses were quite revealing. “There is nothing wrong with Africa, there’s a lot wrong with our leadership. Will you say that God has not endowed us enough? Will you? Will you say God has not given us men and women who can stand on their own anywhere in the world? Will you?”  Obasanjo asks.

He further expatiates on the leadership problem in Africa, recalling his own experiences as a Former President. “After I left government as military head of state, I realized that there are two areas of problems, I call one mistake of omission, mistake of omission is when leaders in any walks of life just don’t know any better, either because of limitation of education, limitation of experience, limitation of training, limitation of knowledge…whatever”

Obasanjo opened up that sometimes, those of them who have occupied leadership positions do not know any better, he illustrates this truth pointing at one of his un-thoughtful decisions – which had to do with putting a good and brilliant person in a  position that basically requires knowledge and relevant experience. “When I was military head of state, using the example of the national carrier -The Nigeria Airways.  The Nigeria Airways was a mess, whatever we tried to do we did not get it right, but I had the presidential pilot or the pilot of the Head of States, a man called Paul Taha. Paul was a first class man, decent, honest and well behaved. So one day I just got fed up with Nigeria Airways so I called Paul and said Paul I want you to take over running the affairs of the Nigeria Airways and Paul agreed, Paul never ran an airline before but he was a good pilot.

Well I should have known that being a good pilot does not mean that you will be a good airline manager, so every other day I will phone him “Paul how are you getting on?” He would say he is alright, one day I phoned him and he said “Sir, I feel like committing suicide” I said, I will pull you out rather than allow you to commit suicide, what is the matter? And he said there’s this airline either Lufthansa or KLM, they have an expert who used to visit Nigeria Airways for about a week, once in six months. So this man came and looked at the flight timetable that Paul had prepared, and when he looked at it he flung it, this took him two nights, and the man said “it might have taken you ten nights but what I see is that you go from Lagos to Kaduna everyday on Monday you take off at 8:30, on Tuesday you take off at 7, on Wednesday you take off at 8. How much convenient would it have been for you and your customers to know that there is a flight to Kaduna everyday, it is 7am daily except Sunday, simple thing!”

And Paul said that thing was so simple but the fact that he did not know of it .…” That’s what I call “mistake of omission”, because of limitation of experience and training” Obasanjo narrates.

In line with the above illustration by Olusegun Obasanjo, I strongly feel that Lagos will benefit a lot by having Akinwunmi Ambode as the next governor, considering his wealth of experience and knowledge, plus the credible achievement he has attained in his career and professional life. I am delighted about his candidacy. He is well versed as an Accountant, Administrator, Public Finance expert and also in civil service matters.

Akin Ambode Lagos gubernatorial aspirant

Akin Ambode Lagos gubernatorial aspirant

Ambode’s profile doesn’t agree with the perception that the public service is only filled with civil servants who are unimaginative. This is a man like Fashola who knows the Lagos State civil service and the working of government like the back of his hands. He has served as Assistant Treasurer to Badagry Local Government, Auditor to Shomolu Local Government, Council Treasurer to Alimosho Local Government and Council Treasurer to Mushin Local Government.

He was later appointed Auditor General of Local Government Councils. Thereafter, he become Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and later became the youngest Accountant-General of the state at the age of 37, a position he occupied till 2012, after which he voluntarily resigned – making his retirement the first ever recorded voluntary retirement by a Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Public Service.

Under his watch, Lagos state’s budget performed at an average of 85 percent annually.

He has been able to transfer his wealth of experience into private practice by establishing Brandsmiths Consulting Limited in 2012. Brandsmiths presently consult for federal, state and local government on financial advisory services.

Should we ignore Ambode’s 27 years of quality experience working with the State, where he has held key positions and made tangible contributions as Auditor General for Local Governments, Permanent Secretary and Accountant General?

Should we then suddenly start demanding change just for the sake of it and then suspend our reasoning as electorates? Experience counts a lot. The days of having good men in leadership positions merely because they are good are over. Anyone who must lead must be garnished with relevant experience that can be translated into development. Such must also have relevant and successful track records. You’ve got to be passionate about the people and that must show via your track records.

My fear with Jimi Agbaje is that in every sense of it, he doesn’t come close to Ambode’s wealth of relevant experience. Say I’m biased, but truthfully I have researched and concluded that Agbaje’s private sector experience isn’t any stellar. Let’s say it’s a little above average. At best! I wonder where he has been after he lost in 2007, only to show up all of a sudden.

The PDP certainly needs his good image to gain Lagos. But truthfully Lagos’ development needs more than that. This state needs to develop into a real megacity and Lagosians need to keep holding the leadership responsible at all times, so they can be accountable.

Lagos PDP Governorship Primaries Should Be Cancelled – Obanikoro

A governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has called for the cancellation of the Lagos State governorship primaries calling it a sham.

At the governorship primaries which was held at Yard 158, Oregun Road, Lagos, Jimi Agbaje polled 432 votes to defeat Obanikoro who scored 343 votes, while Adedeji Doherty and Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi polled 21 votes respectively.

Addressing newsmen at his GRA office shortly after the primaries, Obanikoro said “There is no election results and the elections should be cancelled. The process is completely tainted and going forward with that, will lead to an outcome that will not be beneficial to the party.”

Jimi-PDP

Asked to comment on the outcome of the exercise that threw up Mr Jimi Agbaje, he said “my immediate reaction is t’hat the election was a sham. I still cannot comprehend how accredited delegates of 806, will turn out to be 868. To be honest with you, you can tell that it was a predetermined exercise. People like us are not in this democracy for the sake of it, we are in it to ensure that the right things are done so that the country can be on the right path. We intend to fight this, there is an opportunity for an appeal and we will appeal and we hope the party will do the right thing.”

Accusing Chief Bode George of being responsible for the alleged confusion within the Lagos PDP, he said “Bode George has been the problem as far as this party is concerned and there is no doubt in my mind that he supervised this electoral malpractice. How do you expect the panel chairman arriving Lagos at 10 am on Monday and not starting the election until 5pm in the evening. You can judge by some of the pronouncements made by Bode George, Ogunlewe and a host of others. One of the reasons why this party has failed is because it is being led by the likes of Bode George and Ogunlewe.”

The former Minister of State for Defence, who vowed not to rest until justice is served said “We submitted ourselves to a process that we felt will be free and fair but unfortunately, they decided to play religious politics, manipulation of electoral process particularly on Election Day. This to me is unacceptable, we will contest it in every sense of it and until the needed necessary corrections are made, we will not rest.”
