Philippines says 11 ISIL sympathisers killed in siege.

Government troops have killed at least 11 members of a rebel group in the southern Philippines that has pledged allegiance to ISIL, the military said, sending local communities fleeing as a battle raged on Sunday.

The Maute Group, one of a handful of small armed groups behind years of unrest in the south, had since Saturday occupied parts of a municipality in Lanao del Sur and were holed up in an abandoned town hall.

At least four soldiers were wounded in the clashes and there were unconfirmed reports that the group had raised an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant flag in the hall, said Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, a military spokesman.

Al Jazeera’s Jameela Alindogan, reporting from Manila, said the fight was ongoing with the town of Butig beseiged and about 200 members of the Maute Group there.

“The leaders of this group are believed to have some foreign fighters who are also a part of this siege,” Alindogan said.

“They also took control of a high school and a mosque in the same town, now half of those residents have already fled and half of them remain to be stuck in that village, this is an operation that is expected to last for days.”

The military has not given an estimate for the number of displaced but local media reported an exodus of as many as 16,000 people from the area. Though the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, many people in the south are Muslim.

The Maute group is one of several armed organisations in the Mindanao islands that have pledged allegiance to ISIL.

“Maute came from a name of clan that is very influential and powerful in Boutig,” Al Jazeera’s Alindogan said. “President Rodrigo Duterte has said in the past that they would like to talk to the Maute Group, but the military has already named them as a terror group.

The group, once described by the military as a small-time extortion gang, attacked a remote army outpost in Butig in February, triggering a week of fighting that the army said left six soldiers and 12 fighters dead.

The group also beheaded two employees of a local sawmill in April, according to the military.

Three members of the Maute group were arrested last month, accused of a September bombing that left 15 people dead in Davao, Duterte’s home town and Mindanao’s largest city.

Government forces captured a Maute training camp in the town in June after a 10-day gunbattle that killed four soldiers and dozens of fighters, according to an army account.

Update: Ansbach Bomber ‘Pledged Allegiance To ISIL’

A Syrian man who detonated explosives outside a music festival in the German city of Ansbach, killing only himself and wounding at least 15 people, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant group before the attack, according to a senior government official.

The 27-year-old suspect, who was a refugee, blew himself up late on Sunday after being denied entry to the event.

Joachim Herrmann, the interior minister of Bavaria, said on Monday that video footage discovered on the suspect’s mobile phone showing him pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-declared leader of ISIL, also known as ISIS, makes it clear the incident was a “terrorist attack”.

He said the man, who has not been named, also “announced an act of revenge against Germans because they were standing in the way of Islam”.

Moments later, ISIL claimed responsibility for the bombing on its Amaq website, saying that the attacker was one of its “soldiers”.

Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane, reporting from Berlin, said: “He [the suspect] came to Germany two years ago and his asylum application was rejected last year for reasons that we don’t know right at this minute.

“He had been based in Germany with the knowledge that he was not going to receive permanent asylum in this country. He had twice before tried to take his life and, at some point in the recent past, he had been receiving psychiatric help.”

German police also said on Monday that they had found enough materials to make another bomb at the suspect’s home, and several violent videos. Germany will boost its police presence at airports and train stations and carry out stop-and-search operations close to border areas, Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s interior minister, said in Berlin on Monday after four violent attacks in less than a week.

“What seems particularly important to me at the moment is an increased police presence in public spaces.

“I have therefore ordered that the federal police visibly increase their presence at airports and railways stations and that there are random checks, which are not visible but very effective, in border areas.”

Fight Against Boko Haram, ISIS At Decisive Stage- INTERPOL

The International Police, INTERPOL,on Tuesday said that its fight against Boko Haram, ISIS and other terrorist organizations is at a decisive stage.

INTERPOL’s Secretary General, Mr.Jürgen Stock, who said this while addressing the Foreign Terrorist Fighters(FTF) working groups of the Global Counter-terrorism Forum in The Hague, added that combination of shifts in travel patterns, attacks far from conflict zones, online communications and fraudulent travel documents have led to a ‘decisive stage’ in the fight against terrorism globally.

In his speech, INTERPOL’s Secretary General Stock said the continued resolve of the international community would be required to address the evolution of the terrorist threat.

He pressed further that with Da’esh drawing allegiance from around the globe, the need for coordinated action was essential, not just in identifying and interdicting individuals, but in stopping the funding for their terrorist activities as underlined in the recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2253.

His words:  “Access to information from abroad is essential if we are to strengthen the security net to prevent the terrorists from moving freely and constrict their support networks.

“Ensuring direct access to INTERPOL’s global databases means that instant checks can be conducted against nearly 55 million travel documents, some 200,000 nominal identifiers and more than 40,000 notices of suspected and wanted criminals and terrorists.

“As a global, neutral platform, INTERPOL is ideally placed to share data from our 190 member countries to support them in ensuring this information is where it needs to be,”

He pressed further that among the documents in INTERPOL’s unique global SLTD database are nearly 30,000 Syrian passports, of which some 4,000 were reported stolen as blank.

ISIS Tutors Members On Training Mission By Blowing Up A Baby

ISIS has blown up a baby in order to teach its members the booby-trapping mechanisms during a training mission.

They “brought a baby, the son of a civilian [who] was executed a few weeks ago… in one of [their] training camps near Sharqat, northern Salahuddin… booby-trapped and blew up the child in front of dozens of ISIS militants by a remote,” Sadiq al-Husseini, chairman of the security committee in Diyala provincial council, was quoted as saying by Iraqi News Agency on Sunday.

It was a training mission for ISIS members to learn the booby-trapping mechanisms, said Husseini, adding that the terrorist group “does not care for the most basic human values.”

US Strikes IS Oil Refineries in Syria

The United States bombed Islamic State-controlled oil refineries in Syria as President Barack Obama recruited more allies to fight the jihadist “network of death.”

US, Saudi and Emirati warplanes broadened their bombardment to target the oil installations in eastern Syria that have helped fund the jihadist group’s brutal rise from rebel faction to alleged global threat.

The strikes came as Obama urged leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly to join his coalition and convinced the Security Council to back a resolution to stem the flow of foreign fighters that has swelled the IS ranks.

Belgium and the Netherlands committed warplanes to Iraq and Britain said its parliament would vote Friday on following suit.

Obama told the UN about the Islamic State group, which has grabbed vast areas of Iraq and Syria that, “The United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death…,Today I ask the world to join in this effort.”

He added that “We will use our military might in a campaign of air strikes to roll back ISIL.”

“We Will Degrade & Ultimately Destroy ISIL”- Obama

ISIL

President Barack Obama has authorized air strikes against ISIL targets inside Syria for the first time, promising to destroy its fighters “wherever they exist”.

In an address to the nation on Wednesday, Obama also announced an expansion of strikes in Iraq, saying he would be dispatching nearly 500 more US troops to the country to assist its besieged security forces.

Obama called on Congress to authorize a programme to train and arm rebels in Syria who are fighting both the Islamic State group and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Saudi Arabia, a crucial US ally in the Middle East, offered to host the training missions, part of Obama’s effort to persuade other nations to join with the US in confronting the self-declared jihadist fighters.

Obama said, “This is not our fight alone…”American power can make a decisive difference, but we cannot do for Iraqis what they must do for themselves, nor can we take the place of Arab partners in securing their region. Our objective is clear: We will degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL (Islamic State) through a comprehensive and sustained air strikes strategy.”

Reacting to their threat, British Premier, David Cameron said, the ISIL Takfiri militants pose a threat to the British people, adding that,

“As I have said consistently over the last few weeks, ISIL terrorists speak for no religion. They threaten Syrians, Iraqis, Americans and British people alike and make no distinction between Muslims, Christians or any other faith…”

Last month, a footage showing the decapitation of US journalist James Foley by ISIL was released in retaliation to US airstrikes against the Takfiri group in Iraq. The video also warned that the group would slay Steven Sotloff, who was being held hostage by the militants, if the US president did not halt the airstrikes.

ISIL has executed Sotloff and posted the video displaying his beheading on the internet, the SITE Intelligence Group, a research organization that tracks terrorist web postings, said on Tuesday.

“If verified, this is a despicable and barbaric murder,” Cameron said, adding that he would hold a Cobra emergency meeting on Wednesday to “review these latest developments.”

The British Premier also added that the Bristsh government would do all it could to protect its people from the ISIL terrorists.
