Fashola Inaugurates 330KV Power Switching Station In Akwa Ibom

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Monday, inaugurated a 330KV power switching station in Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom.

The minister, at Ikot Inyang village in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, said that the switch on of the station would boost electricity supply in the country.

He said that the station was expected to evacuate electricity from power plants in Alaoji, Afam, Calabar and Ikot Abasi and route same to Ugwuaji in Enugu up to Jos.

Fashola said that the development would solve the problem of stranded power as the generating plants would have their power evacuated for use.

The minister added that the project was bedevilled with challenges but for the intervention of the National Assembly, which resolved the contending issues for the completion of the project.

The Managing Director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Mr Chiedu Ugbo, who was at the inauguration, said contract for the project was awarded in 2006.

Ugbo said that the project was delayed due to challenges and lauded the stakeholders for the commitment toward completing the project.

He noted that the new management of NDPHC was committed to ensuring improved power generation, saying that the switching of the station on would mark the end of epileptic power supply.

He expressed gratitude to Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and his predecessor, Sen. Godswill Akpabio and the host community for providing conducive environment for the completion of the project.

In her speech, Princess Maryam Akanmode, the contractor handling the project, said the 330 KV station had 12 inter-connectivity lines to evacuate power from the four plants to the national grid.

Akanmode, who is the Managing Director of Carlark International Limited, lauded the Federal Government and stakeholders for assisting in the completion of the project.

The Akwa Ibom Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, said the event marked significant turning point in the march toward new dawn in both power infrastructural renaissance and industrial revolution.

Represented by his Deputy, Mr Moses Ekpo , the governor said that the Ibom Power Plant had approval for upgrade to 685 megawatts from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

He said that the state was generating 191 megawatts from the Power Plant in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of the state.

Emmanuel disclosed that the state government had equally partnered a private investor for the take-off of the N90 billion Uquo Gas Plant at Esit Eket.

He said that gas plant was projected to supply 131 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the National Independent Power Plant (NIPP) in Calabar, as well as the Ibom Power Plant.

Wike Inaugurates Amnesty Programme Committee For Cultists

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike friday inaugurated the State Amnesty Programme and reiterated his warning that the state would not pay for arms surrendered by cultists and militants.

 The governor said the inauguration of the committee was a major move to restore peace across all communities in the state.

The committee has as members, representatives of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Amnesty, Sir Ken Chinda was appointed chairman.

In his inauguration speech, Wike charged the committee to interface with different cult groups for the purpose of retrieving arms from them.

The governor also charged the committee to work out modalities for ensuring the proper integration of cultists and militants who willingly subscribe to the amnesty programme.

He warned the committee members against promising repentant cultists and militants that the state government would pay for arms surrendered in the course of the programme.

He declared: “Anyone who has surrendered his arms and has followed through the process laid out for the amnesty will be pardoned. Such a person will not be prosecuted.

“This committee has 60 days to complete its assignment. After the 60 days, any cultist or militant who fails to subscribe to the amnesty programme will face the full weight of the law.”

The governor reiterated that the amnesty programme was not politically motivated, pointing out that it was designed to promote the security of all communities in the state.

Ambode Inaugurates Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Streetlights

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday commissioned the lighting up of the stretch of Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The streetlights stretched from Ile Zik to former Toll Gate at Sango Ota and Murtala Mohammed International Airport to Oshodi.

Ambode said the initiative was part of the promise of building a 24/7 economy that will create employment and wealth for the people.

He said the commissioning would provide adequate illumination on strategic highways in keeping with his vision to light up all major roads and border towns in the State.

He said: “It is very important to note that the Light Up Lagos Project goes beyond lighting up roads. As a State, we have keyed into the CHANGE mantra of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government and have taken the project to Federal Roads. We have gotten the support of Federal Government agencies to take over federal roads, put new installations and retrofit existing installations that are not working.

He added that the project was an integral part of his programmes geared towards putting Lagos on the same pedestal and status as similar megalopolis in the world, adding that the initiative was also part of the security strategy to make Lagos competitive, safe and secure.

He said significant success had been recorded since the commencement of the project among which included an increase in commercial activity in the areas where project had been installed, while driving on major highways and streets in Ikeja, Alausa Central Business District, Third Mainland bridge, Iyana Oworo/Berger axis amongst others have become more pleasurable as a result of the improved illumination.

He assured that the gateway town of Seme in Badagry and other border towns will have their streets lit by September.

Buratai Inaugurates Human Rights Desk Office

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has assured members of the public, as well as the local and international human rights bodies that the Nigerian Army (NA), under his leadership will investigate all cases of human rights complaints brought before it.

To this end, Buratai has in a first of its kind within the military, on Thursday, set up and commissioned Human Rights Desk office under the Department of Civil-Military Relations.

Represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA) Maj-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, at the Commissioning of the Desk, COAS said that the event marks another important day in the history of Nigerian Army “by establishing the human rights office”.

He noted that the establishment of the Desk office was borne out of the increasing interest of the local and international human rights bodies on what we are doing in the North East and other parts of the country.

FG Inaugurates $160m World Bank SME Fund

Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah on Tuesday unveiled a $160 million (about N49.2 million) World Bank powered scheme to improve access to finance to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in order to boost employment in the country.
Also launched, an online vehicle to properly execute the programme was the Business Innovation and Growth (BIG) platform. BIG is landmark initiative of the Federal Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, which is funded by the World Bank and represents the main channel through which the Growth and Employment (GEM) assistance is expected to be made available to micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in order to stimulate economic activities in critical non-oil sector areas.
The minister noted that the initiative, which has a three-year-implementation time frame, would among other things, help to open up the nation’s economic space to more players, particularly small business operators.
He said: “One of the challenges we have, which is well documented, is our ranking in the ease of doing business; it is depressing to know that Nigeria is ranked 169th of 189. And we have told the World Bank what exactly are the issues. So I am very confident that as unsatisfactory as it is, it is not going to be business as usual. So we are going to see a new Nigeria, you are going to see us working together in the mirror to see our country rise.”

Buhari Inaugurates Ministers Next Week

Save for any change in programme , President Mu­hammadu Buhari will, next week, inaugurate and assign portfolios to ministers con­firmed by the Senate today.

The number of minis­ters that will be inaugurat­ed will, however, depend on the outcome of today’s confirmation of the sec­ond batch of the ministe­rial nominees, 16 in number, whose screening ended yes­terday. Senate confirmed 21 ministries last week.

If the 16 nominees scale the confirmation hurdle to­day, the total number of min­isters that would be sworn in next week will be 37.

Dangote Inaugurates $250 Million Plant In Cameroon

Dangote Cement Plc inaugurates a 250 million-dollar (N48.75 billion) cement grinding plant in Douala, Cameroon. Dangote Group also laid the foundation stone for a 200 metre jetty in Douala.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President/ Chief Executive, Dangote Group, said at the ceremony, that the plant, with a capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa), was a great feat in the operations of the company.

“The plant is our largest greenfield project in a neighbouring country with which we not only share a boundary but also a long history of brotherly relationship dating from our colonial days,” Dangote said.

President Buhari Inaugurates National Economic Council

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated the National Economic Council led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The council, which has the 36 state governors and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria as members, is saddled with the responsibility of advising the President on economic affairs of the country.

Buhari tasked members to come up with ways of liquidating outstanding salaries and wages across the country. He restated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, corruption and other social vices.

FG Inaugurates Committee To Probe NIMC Labour Crisis

The Federal Government has inaugurated an independent committee to address the labour crisis between the National Identity Management Commission and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria.

Deputy Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Samuel Olowookere, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

The statement noted that the committee, inaugurated by Dr. Clement Illoh, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, would look into the purported certificate forgery and irregular career progression in the commission.

It quoted Olowookere as saying that the upgrade and promotions resulting in proposed dismissal of some staff of the commission were also to be considered by the committee.

He said, “I have no doubt that the outcome of this assignment will put to rest all the suspicious misconceptions, ill feelings, emotional outbursts and tension this crisis has generated in the commission.”

He said members of the committee were drawn from the ministry, NIMC, ASCN, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Other members of the committee were drawn from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and the Federal Civil Service Commission.

He added that the single term of reference of the committee was to ascertain whether the disciplinary actions taken by NIMC were based on due process, transparency and accountability.

Buhari Inaugurates 8th Assembly On Tuesday

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to inaugurate the 8th National Assembly on Tuesday, June 9. Buhari has already written the Clerk of the National Assembly, Salihu Maikasuwa of his plans.

The President directed Maikasuwa to convene the new session on the said date. Principal officers of the National Assembly are expected to elected after the inauguration.

PDP Inaugurates Probe Committee

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Ikeje Asogwa, has inaugurated a five-man committee to reposition the party after the recent general elections.

The committee is headed by the secretary of the party in the state, Steve Oruruo and Emeka Igwesi as secretary. Other members of the committee include Dr. Chris Iyiani, Oby Nwafor and Armstrong Agbo respectively.

According to Asogwa, the committee among other things will appraise and assess the just concluded elections in the state in order to identify members who engaged in anti-party activities and identifying the weaknesses and lapses of the party during the elections.

Asogwa enjoined the committee to realise the huge responsibility they had been saddled with, especially as the entire membership of the party in the state relied on their integrity and capacity as party faithful to execute the mandate handed down to them.

Buhari Inaugurates APC Transition Committee

The All Progressives Congress, APC has unveiled its transition technical committee. The president-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari inaugurated the committee in Abuja, Wednesday.

It is a 19-man committee whose responsibility is to interface with the federal government to ensure a smooth handover to the incoming government. Members of the committee include APC Chairman, Chief John Odie-Oyegun, former PDP chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, APC Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Muhammed among others.
