We Need To Improve On Governance, Accountability, Buhari To ECOWAS Leaders

President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the need to review the ECOWAS Treaty in order to make the regional organisation more responsive to new national, regional and global challenges.

The president made the call at the opening of the 50th Ordinary Session of the Authority and Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held in Abuja on Saturday.

He also called for the speedy conclusion of the reforms of all ECOWAS institutions to put ECOWAS on a much stronger footing and to prepare member nations for the challenges of such Institutional reforms.

President Buhari also stressed the need to make conscious efforts to improve on governance and accountability at all levels. “We also need to make conscious efforts to improve on Governance and accountability at all levels.

“This calls for the speedy conclusion of the reforms of all ECOWAS institutions to put ECOWAS on a much stronger footing and prepare us for the challenges of such Institutional reforms.

“To this end, we should ensure that priority is given to the implementation of development programmes, while the ECOWAS Parliament should be entrusted with more functions.

“In addition, the cost of governance must be reduced across all ECOWAS Institutions while resources should be devoted to programmes and projects that will have direct bearing on the lives of ordinary citizenry and create jobs fast enough to absorb our teeming youth population.

“In this regard, it is necessary that measures be taken to review the ECOWAS Treaty in order to make ECOWAS responsive to new national, regional and global challenges.”

On economic integration, Buhari observed that the modest achievements in regional integration were being challenged by globalisation. According to him, most member countries continue to record low volume of trade, occasioned by declining level of economic activities, caused by the sharp fall in commodity prices.

Tambuwal, Osinbajo’s Wives Move To Improve Children, Woman’s Welfare

In an effort to improve the well-being of Sokoto women and children by ensuring access to education and health opportunities, wife of the Sokoto Governor, Hajiya Maria Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Thursday visited the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

The meeting was designed to help Sokoto state become the champions of change on issues like women’s health, girl-child education, improving child mortality, and boosting women’s economic empowerment.

In her remarks, Mrs Tambuwal said the state government is mapping out modalities to increase the number of women entrepreneurs so they can build themselves and help their families and communities at large.

This, according to her, becomes imperative because it will reduce poverty rate across the state.
She said women in Sokoto are receptive to new ideas, and have in the past shown the need to work with the authorities and development agencies to improve their lots and seek a better future for their children.

“We need the support of the Federal Government in that regard,” she added.

Responding, Mrs Osinbajo appreciated the fact that Mrs Tambuwal had come with a clear agenda to tackle the problems of girls education and women empowerment.

What Buhari, Mahama Agreed On In Secret Meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari and his Ghanaian counterpart on Monday agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and improve regional security.

The two Presidents entered the agreements during in a closed door meeting after which the press was briefed on issues discussed.

Top on the list was the reformation of the military and  on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bio-metric card, which would make trading between Ghana and Nigeria much easier.

President Buhari gave the assurance that he will compose his cabinet during a joint press conference with President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana.

“After I was sworn-in, I said I will have my cabinet in September. I expect that Nigerians should ask me questions after the 30th of September if I do not do so,” President Buhari said.

Nigeria Gets $500m From World Bank To Improve Maternal, Child Health

The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a $500 million International Development Association (IDA) credit to significantly improve maternal, child, and nutrition health services for women and children in Nigeria.

By improving access to higher quality health services, the new development financing will help Nigeria to achieve its “Saving One Million Lives (SOML) Initiative,” which was launched by the Federal Ministry of Health in October 2012 to save the lives of the more than 900,000 women and children who die every year in Nigeria from largely preventable causes.

“Saving One Million Lives is a bold response from the Nigerian Government to improve the health of the country’s mothers and children so they can survive illness and thrive. This, in turn, will also contribute to the social and economic development of Africa’s largest economy,” said Benjamin Loevinsohn, a Lead Health Specialist and Task Team Leader for the new project…”
