ABU Makes History, Becomes First To Host American Football Match In West Africa

The prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)  has yet again imprinted its name in the history books by being the first to host an American Football match, not only in Nigeria, but the entire West African sub-region.
The historical match which pitched the Lagos Marines against hosts ABU saw the more experienced home team devoured the visitors 26-14 in the highly entertaining encounter last Saturday.

Being the first time, organisers were not anticipating the unprecedented large turn-out of spectators that thronged the ABU Sports Complex to get a glimpse of the historic match.

Fans of American Football, who were attracted from all over Nigeria, were excited all through the encounter, presenting Nigerians with another pulsating option to the regular football.

Speaking in an interview after the encounter, President of the Nigerian Institute of American Football, Professor Adamu Ahmed, said that he was impressed by the impact the first outing had on the spectators.
“We are really thrilled and excited about the huge followership this first game is getting,” he said.
He explained that the thought of the institute was first muted in 2012, during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of ABU, a decision all stakeholders are today very proud of.

Nigeria To Host ECOWAS In December

President Muhammadu Buhari has agreed to host the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Heads of Governments.

In a four paragraph press release from the Presidency, President Buhari said that vital issues bordering on security and the economy would be discussed at the summit which holds during the third week in December 2015.

He said that it was time to seek the cooperation of the sub-region in fighting the scourge of terrorism and the illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea which he says currently undermines the West African economy.

In September, President Buhari hosted an extraordinary summit of the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The main item on the agenda of the summit was the political situation which had caused violence and unrest in Burkina Faso.

Obama To Host Anti ISIS Coalition Summit

US President Barack Obama will host a summit in New York next month of leaders of the international coalition fighting Islamic State jihadists in Syria and Iraq, diplomats said.

The summit on countering violent extremism on September 29 comes one year after Obama vowed to crush IS during his United Nations speech.

Since then, the jihadists have captured territory in Syria and Iraq and gained a foothold in Libya, Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East, with alliances as far afield as Nigeria’s Boko Haram.

On Wednesday, IS released a picture on Twitter of a Croatian hostage abducted in Egypt, who apparently was the latest victim of the group’s horrific beheadings.

The United States last year assembled a coalition of 50-plus countries to beat back Islamic State, which declared a caliphate in June 2014 after seizing the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Diplomats said the summit, to be held on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly meeting, will allow leaders to take stock and chart a way forward in the campaign to defeat Islamic State.

Beijing To Host 2022 Winter Olympics

Beijing was selected Friday to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first city awarded both the winter and summer games.

Beijing narrowly defeated Almaty, Kazakhstan, in a vote of the International Olympic Committee. The vote was surprisingly close: 44-40.

The Chinese capital, which hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, came in to the vote as the strong favorite, despite its lack of natural snow.

The secret vote was conducted by paper ballot, after the first electronic vote experienced technical faults with the tablets.

Beijing was seen by the IOC as a safe, reliable choice that also offered vast commercial opportunities in a new winter sports market of more than 300 million people in northern China.

Almaty had hoped to bring the games to Central Asia for the first time, but was a lesser-known quantity and viewed as a riskier choice by IOC members. Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov made a last-minute impassioned plea for the IOC to be “brave” and give the games to his country, but it wasn’t enough.

Obama To Host Buhari At The White House, Find Out What They’ll Be Discussing

US President Barack Obama will welcome his Nigerian counterpart to Washington next month, the White House announced Thursday, a symbolic show of solidarity after the country’s first ever democratic transition.

“President Obama will host Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House,” on July 20, the White House said.

The visit will mark “our support for the Nigerian people following their historic democratic elections and peaceful transfer of power,” a statement added.

Obama’s administration had faced criticism for not planning to visit Nigeria during a two nation Africa tour, also slated for July.

That trip will take in Kenya and Ethiopia, countries which have held highly questioned elections in recent memory.

May elections in Ethiopia resulted in the ruling party gaining all 546 parliamentary seats.

A presidential visit to Kenya had been put on ice while President Uhuru Kenyatta faced charges — now suspended — of crimes against humanity for his role in 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Obama and Buhari themselves will have a packed agenda. The White House said they would discuss combating Boko Haram militants.

The armies of Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been fighting a joint campaign against Boko Haram for several months, pushing militants out of captured towns and villages.

But village raids continue apace, often resulting in the deaths of dozens of women and children. Boko Haram has been fighting to establish a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria since 2009.

Obama and Buhari will also discuss Nigeria’s economic and political reforms to “unlock its full potential as a regional and global leader.”
