Facebook Finally Gets Serious About Fighting Fake News

Facebook is taking new measures to curb the spread of fake news on its huge and influential social network, focusing on the “worst of the worst” offenders.

The online behemoth is going into partnership with outside fact-checkers to sort honest news reports from made-up stories that play to people’s passions and preconceived notions.

Fake news stories touch on a broad range of subjects, from unproven cancer cures to celebrity hoaxes and backyard Bigfoot sightings. But fake political stories have drawn attention because of the possibility they influenced public perceptions and could have swayed the US presidential election.

There have been other dangerous real-world consequences.

A fake story about a child sex ring at a Washington DC pizza joint prompted a man to fire an assault rifle inside the restaurant, Comet Ping Pong.

“We do believe that we have an obligation to combat the spread of fake news,” said John Hegeman, Facebook’s vice president of product management on news feed, in an interview.

But he added Facebook also takes its role to provide people with an open platform seriously, and it is not the company’s place to decide what is true or false.

To start, Facebook is making it easier for users to report fake news when they see it, which they can now do in two steps. If enough people report a story as fake, Facebook will pass it to third-party, fact-checking organisations that are part of the nonprofit Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network.

Ilhan Omar's Facebook post

“The cabdriver called me ISIS [so-called Islamic State] and threatened to remove my hijab, I really wasn’t sure how this encounter would end as I attempted to rush out of his cab and retrieve my belongings.

Policeman Gets Life Sentence For Killing Man Over Cup Of Tea

An Egyptian court sentenced a policeman who killed a man over the price of a cup of tea to life in prison on Wednesday, a rare lengthy punishment for police violence in a country that rights activists say has a culture of impunity.

Public anger over allegations of police brutality has been bubbling over the past year, with several incidents spilling over into skirmishes and protests, five years after an uprising in which police officers were a major focus of discontent.

The policeman sentenced on Wednesday shot three people in a Cairo suburb after an argument over the price of a cup of tea, killing one of them and causing a riot. The sentence, issued after he was convicted of murder, can be appealed. Life sentences in Egypt normally run for 25 years.

Activists say police brutality is widespread in Egypt, enabled by a culture of impunity. The Interior Ministry says abuses are isolated and incidents are investigated.

Anger over perceived police excesses helped fuel the 2011 uprising that began on a Police Day holiday and ended the 30-year rule of autocratic President Hosni Mubarak. Since then, police have regained considerable powers and human rights groups say they have returned to their old ways.

In February, a policeman shot dead a driver in the street in an argument over a fare, prompting hundreds of people to protest outside the Cairo security directorate.

There were also riots in the northern, Suez Canal city of Ismailia and southern Nile city of Luxor over the authorities’ handling of at least three deaths in police custody in a single week in November last year.

Man Accidentally Gets His Testicle Trapped In A Chair

After a knee injury, Claus Jørstad of Alta, Norway invested in a MARIUS Stool from IKEA to sit on while he showered — but that plan backfired big time. While sitting on the chair during a recent rinse, one of Jørstad’s testicles got stuck in a hole on the seat when the hot water caused them to expand.

“Sitting there and noticing the accident, I bent down to see what happened, I realized the little nutter has got stuck,” he told Daily Mail. He sat there so long, in fact, that the water turned cold. However, Jørstad thinks the freezing water was actually his saving grace. You see, the temperature drop caused his testicle to shrink again, which allowed him to safely free his little guy.

But after the incident, he decided to warn others about his experience by taking to Facebook and alerting IKEA in a post that has since gone viral. According to Daily Dot, Jørstad told IKEA, “Sitting there and noticing the accident, I bent down to see what the f*ck happened, I realized the little nutter has got stuck.” He also said, “The water turned cold by itself. So I started freezing. The water got cold. Even more cold than my mother-in-law’s smile when I married her daughter.”

Man Gets Life In Prison For Killing Of 6 Year Old

An Arizona man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday in the killing of his 6-year-old nephew after the child witnessed his father’s shooting death.

Authorities say 24-year-old Christopher Rey Licon fatally shot his half brother, Angel Jaquez, in a 2010 drug dispute and killed his nephew, Xavier Jaquez, out of fear that he would snitch because the child heard or saw his father die.

Licon was convicted of murder in both killings. A jury had previously spared him the death penalty and instead sentenced him to life in prison, though it was up to a judge to later decide whether he would become eligible for release after serving 35 years.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens balked against the more lenient option and ordered Licon to spend the rest of his life in prison. She also sentenced him to an additional 36 years in prison in his brother’s killing, the kidnapping of his nephew and for other convictions in the case.

Investigators say Licon killed his brother at their Phoenix town house, kidnapped the child and shot him 20 miles away in an alley. The boy was still wearing his school uniform and a Burger King kid’s meal was nearby when his body was found by sanitation workers.

Licon mounted an unsuccessful insanity defense that would have spared him a prison sentence and sent him to the state mental hospital for the rest of his life.

MTN Gets Dec 31 Deadline To Pay N674bn Slashed Fine

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has reduced the N1.04 trillion fine it imposed on MTN Nigeria to N674 billion.

However, the commission has also mandated the telecom operator to pay the fine on or before December 31, 2015.

The fine imposed on the telecom operator was due to what NCC described as MTN’s inability to disconnect about 5.1 million Nigerian subscribers improperly registered on its network, after several warnings in August and September 2015.

In reaction, MTN has said it would carefully study the new development and would mandate its Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko, to immediately and urgently re-engage with the Nigerian authorities before responding formally.

The reduction, which represents a 25 per cent slash, provides MTN with a reprieve, after series of meetings which have seen several officials from South Africa thronging the country to negotiate the fine.
