Nigeria, Morocco To Build Gas Pipeline Link

Nigeria and Morocco on Saturday resolved to jointly promote a gas pipeline that will connect the two countries and some other African countries.

This was one of the agreement reached during the three-day visit of Moroccan King President Mohammed VI.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Geoffrey Onyema, disclosed this to reporters on Saturday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Onyema said the gas pipeline project would also accelerate energy and electrification projects across the affected member countries.

He said, “It is a great honour and privilege to read for you a communique which outlines the strategic visions that you both have for our two countries.

“On the occasion of the visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Nigeria, and following the discussion with President Muhammadu Buhari in Marrackeck, on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties (COP-22), and also in Abuja , the Kingdom of Morocco and the Federal Republic of Nigeria decided to study and take concrete steps toward the promotion of a regional gas pipeline project that will connect Nigeria’s gas resources, those of several West African countries and Morocco.”

The minister said the pipeline project would be designed with the participation of all stakeholders.

This, he explained, is meant to create a competitive regional electricity market with the potential to be connected to the European energy markets.

He said  Nigeria and Kingdom of Morocco also agreed to develop integrated industrial clusters in the sub-region in sectors such as manufacturing, Agro-business and fertilizers to attract foreign capital and improve export competitiveness.

Again, Avengers Blow Up NNPC Gas Pipeline In Akwa Ibom

Niger Delta Avengers on Sunday night allegedly blew up the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, gas pipeline at Nsite Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

The claim has not been independently confirmed, but spokesperson of the militant group, self-styled Brig Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, in a statement, challenged NNPC to “check their pipeline if it is ‘system anomaly.’

” The statement read: “At 11:30pm on Sunday, the NDA blow up Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), gas pipeline at Nsit-Ibom L.G.A, Akwa Ibom state.

NNPC should check their pipeline if it’s “system Anomaly”. Asking the NNPC to check if it was system anomaly is an allusion to the exchange between the militant group and Exxon Mobil, which initially denied an attack on its export line in Akwa-Ibom state, saying that it was a system anomaly, only to declare force majeure days later.

Suspected Militants Bomb Gas Pipeline In Nigeria

Suspected Niger delta oil rebels have bombed a gas pipeline owned by the Nigeria subsidiary of Italy’s Eni, the latest attack on the country’s oil facilities, a company official said Wednesday.

The militants blew up the Agip gas pipeline at Ogbembiri in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa state on Sunday, leading to an oil production drop equivalent to 1,000 barrels per day, said the official who asked not to be identified.

“I can confirm the sabotage to that pipeline. The production impact is approximately 1,000 bpd of Eni’s equity,” he told AFP.

The pipeline has been repeatedly breached this year amid renewed violence in the region.

Gunmen Blow Up Agip Gas Pipeline Over Suspect’s Arrest

A group of armed men believed to be cultists have blown up a gas facility in Akala Olu village, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State for the arrest and continued detention of a suspect, Mr. Emmanuel Odum.
The attack on the gas facility, according to a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade in Port Harcourt, Captain Eli Lazarus, disrupted production activities of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company.
The suspected cultists believed to be members of Icelander cult group had demanded the release of Odum, who was said to be currently undergoing interrogation for his alleged involvement in pipeline vandalisation and cult-related activities.
The statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday indicated that the vandals and suspected cultists had also threatened to carry out further attacks on oil and gas installations unless their demands were met.
“In the early hours of Sunday February 7, 2016, pipeline vandals destroyed a gas facility in Akala Olu village in Oshie community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, thereby disrupting the production activities of Nigeria Agip Oil Company.
“The vandals threatened to carry out further acts of vandalism unless their demands are met. The vandals are suspected members of Icelander cult group.
“The group demanded for the release of a detained suspect; one Mr. Emmanuel Odum currently undergoing interrogation in connection with pipeline vandalism and cult related activities,” the statement read.

See How Much Nigeria Is Losing On Gas Pipeline Attack

The Federal Government has announced that it is losing a huge sum of N470 million daily following the militant’s attack on the Escravos gas pipelines in the Niger Delta last weekend.

Besides, the repairs of the pipelines would cost the government N120 million to function again.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Hakeem Bello, the damage done to the pipelines would have far reaching effects on the power situation in the country.

The statement read: “As security agencies intensify the search for culprits behind the act, it has been established that the weekend’s attack on the Nigeria Gas Company’s pipeline connected to Chevron Nigeria Limited’s facility at Escravos, will impact negatively on the Olorunsogo NIPP plant (capacity 600MW), and other Power Plants.

“The sabotaged gas pipeline which contributes to the Escravos Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) has led to a loss of 160mmsfcd of gas daily. At a cost of $2.50 per thousand scf, this loss means about $400,000 loss to the country on a daily basis (N78, 800,000 daily) in gas volume. This is in addition to losses to be incurred daily from affected Power generation ($1,988,223 or N391, 680,000 daily). The total daily loss to the country is therefore estimated at N470, 479,931. Repairs of the damaged pipeline is estimated as costing ($609,137 or N120, 000.000).

“The real sector of the economy has also been counting its losses as some cement companies around Olorunsogo like Ewekoro and Ibese are also affected.

“The latest incident has occurred just as the Federal Government through the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, along with allied agencies has been making concerted efforts to improve gas supplies to the Power Plants. Such efforts led to previously offline plants like Ihovbor and Sapele coming back online and the subsequent output making up for the loss in power. The pipelines are being actively monitored for further attacks or other unforeseen impacts.

“Available records show that six incidences of vandalism from December 2014 to February 2015 which affected the Trans Forcados Pipeline (at Oben, Sapele, Oredo) and Escravos Lagos Pipeline System (CNL) led to a loss of 1,100 MMscfd. According to industry experts, a loss of 200 MMscfd is equivalent to a Power reduction of 700MW.”

Militants’ Bombing Of Gas Pipeline Is Sabotage- Naval Chief

Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas on Friday, described the bombing of the gas pipeline supplying gas from Escravos-Warri to Lagos and Abuja, as sabotage saying that Nigerian Navy has consequently being put on alert to contain any other act of sabotage.

the CNS said, “It is sabotage but the Commanders on ground at our Eastern, Central and Logistics Command are on top of the situation. Presently, we have arrested some of the perpetrators of this heinous crime because what they have done is something that affects the whole nation.

“I want to assure you that the Nigerian Navy will do all within its powers in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure more security for oil and gas platforms in the country and those trying to cause carnage and economic sabotage will be made to face the music.

Continuing the CNS said, irrespective of whom these hoodlums are, they have to realize that their own families, communities and the nation at large will bear the brunt of this unpatriotic act. We will spare no one responsible when caught”
