President Muhammadu Buhari wednesday held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.

The president also met separately with Senators from the South-east.

The senators at the meeting, held at the president’s office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, were led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
After the meeting with the lawmakers, they exited while Buhari held a personal meeting with Saraki.

The meeting came about a week after the Senate rejected Buhari’s request to borrow $29.9 billion from external sources.

The lawmakers, across party divide, rejected the application without debate, saying it did not come with relevant information such as purpose, means of repayment and among others.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Ekweremadu said: “For us from the South-east, we believe that dialogue is better than any other form of engagement. So we decided to visit the president and present to him some of the concerns of the South-east including the issues of roads, general infrastructure: the rail, airports. We also discussed the issue of security with him and of course the issue of Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB.) We had a good conversation with the president, and he promised to look into the issues.”

The Chairman of the South-east Caucus in the Senate, Eyinnaya Abaribe, who was also at the meeting with the president, said the South-east caucus came to see the president over raging issues in the region.

He said: “This is the South-east caucus in the Senate and we came to see the president because of the issues we have in the South-east.

“We had a fruitful discussion with the president. He has promised us that he is going to look into the problems of region.

“We know that there are problems everywhere but we also believe that the South-east is the zone that is far much shortchanged at this time than other zones.

We also talked about the issue of appointments from the South-east, especially with respect to the National Security Council. The president also told us that governors of the South-east have also engaged him on the same problems we engaged him on.

“There is a concerted effort from the people of the South-east to be sure that we engage with this government meaning fully.

“We are reassured with the response we got from the president and we look forward to further interaction with him in this manner.”

Others in the delegation were: Sam Egwu, Hope Uzodima, Andy Uba and Chukwuka Utazi.

JTF Foils Kidnap Attempt, Arrests Five Militant Suspects

Troops of the Joint Military Force (JTF) deployed to the Niger Delta Operation Delta Safe, have foiled a kidnap attempt, freed two victims and arrested five suspected militants in multiple operations, according to a statement.

The statement, signed by Lt.-Cdr. Thomas Otuji, Deputy Spokesman, JTF, issued on Friday in Yenagoa, stated that five suspected militants were arrested in the operations by several components of the force in the past 10 days.

Otuji attributed the successes recorded to distress calls from members of the public.

‘’Several illegal refineries were also destroyed during the operations. Troops immediately swung into action and rescued the victims.

“One Mrs Vanessa Ilepi and Mrs Tega Okoro were kidnapped at gunpoint at Amukpe community in Warri.

“Effort is ongoing to apprehend the suspected kidnappers who escaped.

‘’A locally made single barrel gun was recovered from the arrested suspected kidnapper,’’ he said.

Army Foils Boko Haram Attack, Kills Five

Five Boko Haram members were killed as Nigerian troops thwarted an attack near the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the epicentre of the seven-year insurgency, the army said on Tuesday.

“Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE accompanied by Civilian JTF successfully thwarted an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists on Yauri community at the outskirts of Maiduguri city, Borno State,” said a statement by army spokesman Sani Usman.

During the incident, which took place on Monday, five insurgents were killed and a cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and a machine gun, were recovered, he said.

With the help of regional forces, Nigerian troops have recaptured a range of territories and driven the insurgents into remote areas in the Lake Chad region.

Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict Islamic law in northern Nigeria, has killed some 20,000 and displaced more than 2.6 million people since 2009.

Army Foils Fresh Boko Haram Attack On Maiduguri

The Nigerian Army has said that it has foiled a planned Boko Haram attack on Maiduguri, using powerful assault rifles and home-made bombs.

Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman, stated this in a statement made available yesterday.

He said, “Nine terrorists sneaked into Maiduguri armed with AK-47 assault rifles and (a) Hilux vehicle laden with 20 improvised explosive devices”.

According to him, the IEDs were “meant to be detonated at some selected targets in the city”.

But Usman did not elaborate in the statement about potential targets and refused to comment further when contacted by AFP to ask whether the nine suspects had been arrested.

But he added: “We will let you know at the conclusion (of a preliminary investigation) what exactly they wanted to do.”

Police Foils Sea Pirates’ Attack In Bayelsa

Bayelsa Police Command yesterday said its Marine Division in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state had repelled an attack by sea pirates on a passenger boat in the area.

Mr. Asinim Butswat, an ASP and spokesman of the Command, said in a statement that the attack occurred on August 28 at Gina-Gbene area of Southern Ijaw.

According to the spokesman, an AK-47 assault rifle and live ammunition were recovered from the pirates who abandoned their 75 Horse Power speedboat and fled into the creeks.

Butswat assured that efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing pirates, explaining: “On August 28, about 0820 hrs, the Bayelsa State Marine Police, stationed at Koluama, in Southern Ijaw local government area, repelled some suspected sea pirates attacking a passenger boat around Gina-Gbene, in Southern Ijaw local government area. “The Pirates ran into a nearby Creek, abandoned their speed boat mounted with 75HP Yamaha Engine, with the inscription ‘DEEP SEA MARINE’.”
