Five Feared Killed As Hausa, Fulani Clash Over A Girl In Lagos

No fewer than five persons were yesterday feared killed and many others injured as some Hausa and Fulani men clash in Lagos

The cause of the fracas in Abbattior/Kara, Agege, was the alleged robbery of some Hausa men by some Fulani boys at a hotel in Kogiri.

The police confirmed the clash but said only one person died in the violence that lasted for many hours.

The area was tension-soaked in spite of the heavy security presence and the deployment of an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

There were many accounts of the incident as recounted by those who claimed to have knowledge of it.

A trader who gave his name as Usman said the Hausa boys complained to their brothers and a complaint was filed before the Seriki Fulani, Bello Damobapa, who allegedly took no action to sanction the boys.

Angered by the alleged silence of the Seriki, the Hausa boys were said to have stormed his palace on Tuesday night and vandalised three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) belonging to him, his deputy and secretary.

By yesterday morning, it was learnt that a crowd of Fulani boys armed with sticks, bottles and cutlasses trooped to the railway lines where Hausa scraps collectors operate and started attacking people.

Usman said: “I usually sleep here but last night something just made me go home and I did. So I came out here around 7am and one woman told me to go back that Hausa and Fulani men were fighting.

“But I crossed to the other side and I saw a large number of Fulani people. They were carrying sticks with which they rear cattle, cutlasses and bottles. They were marching down, attacking anyone in sight

“The retreating Hausa men regrouped and confronted the Fulani group. The Hausa group called their kins from other markets for reinforcement. They came from Katangura, Agege and other markets. They chased the Fulani back into the abattoir complex.

“By that time, the police and soldiers had not come.  When they chased the Fulani people back, the Fulani went into the market and started attacking anyone they saw. They attacked even people who are not Hausa.

Police spokesman Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said four persons had been arrested.

She said the fight erupted following the assault of a Hausa girl by a Fulani man.

Mobile Police Stray Bullet Kills Father Of Five In Lagos

Drivers of mass transit buses yesterday boycotted Okoko / CMS route to protest the alleged killing of their colleague Sunday evening by a Mobile policeman.

The deceased, identified simply as Fatai was said to have been hit by a stray bullet from a Mobile policeman , at Doyin bus-stop in Orile area of Lagos. The policeman with an undisclosed identity, who was said to be escorting a jeep, reportedly fired some shots into the air apparently to disperse vehicles which blocked the road, only for a bullet to hit the mass transit bus driver.

One of the protesting drivers , Ishola Manni, who spoke with this reporter, said: Our friend and colleague, Fatai , popularly called Oshe was killed by a Mobile policeman on Sunday.

He died leaving behind a wife and five children. Who will take care of them?, he asked. An eye witness, Ebere Madu explained that: “ I was attending to some customers when we heard some gun shots. Everyone ran away, thinking it was a robbery operation, but by the time the whole place was calm, we were told that a man who was hit by a stray bullet fired by a Mobile policeman was lying in the pool of his blood.

When the Policeman realised what happened, he disappeared from the scene, leaving the vehicle he was escorting . Boys in the area swung into action and arrested an occupier of the jeep whom they handed over to policemen at Orile division. The corpse was taken to the police station, from where it was taken to another location”.

Five Injured In Abuja As Police Breaks Traffic Rule

No fewer than five persons were seriously injured on Monday in an accident that occurred when a police bullion van driver broke traffic regulation.

A witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident occurred on Sani Abacha barracks road involving a police vehicle’s driver.

He said the driver of the police bullion van, “roforce” number NPF 2647D, Agada Daniel of the police FCT commands, allegedly drove against the traffic.

“The driver of the bullion van decided to take one way and with the rate of his speed, it rammed into an Abuja painted taxi marked Kaduna, DKA 601XA.

“As a result of the speed, the driver collided with the oncoming vehicle; another painted taxi driver,’’ he said.

He said four of the injured are staff of the Halogen security company in Area 3, FCT.

According to him, driving against the traffic has become norms for the police and the military, mostly on Maraba axis.

“It is so unfortunate that the law makers are the law breakers in this Country,’’

Army Foils Boko Haram Attack, Kills Five

Five Boko Haram members were killed as Nigerian troops thwarted an attack near the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the epicentre of the seven-year insurgency, the army said on Tuesday.

“Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE accompanied by Civilian JTF successfully thwarted an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists on Yauri community at the outskirts of Maiduguri city, Borno State,” said a statement by army spokesman Sani Usman.

During the incident, which took place on Monday, five insurgents were killed and a cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and a machine gun, were recovered, he said.

With the help of regional forces, Nigerian troops have recaptured a range of territories and driven the insurgents into remote areas in the Lake Chad region.

Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict Islamic law in northern Nigeria, has killed some 20,000 and displaced more than 2.6 million people since 2009.

Buhari Appoints Five Heads Of Health Agencies

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved with immediate effect the appoint¬ments of five heads of strategic health institutions.
The Director (Press), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Bolaji Adebiyi, said in a statement.
The health agencies are, Centre for Disease Control, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and National Health Insurance Scheme, (NHIS).
According to the statement, Babatunde Sa¬lami has been appointed to replace Innocent Ujah at the NIMR as Director General, Sani Aliyu replaces, John Idoko as DG NACA, Usman Yusuf takes over from Abimbola Alale as DG NHIS, Echezona Ezeanolue takes over from Ado Muhammad as Executive Secretary, while Chikwe Andreas Ihekwazu takes over the helm of CDC.
Salami was the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan before his new appointment while Aliyu was until his appointment a consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at Cambridge University, UK. Yusuf, was until his appointment a professor of Paediatrics at St. Jude Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, while Ezeanolue was a professor of Paediatrics and Public Health at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA.

INEC Releases Five Additional Results In Rivers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday night released five more results of the March 19 rerun elections.
Three federal and two  state constituency seats were released by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Aniedi Ikoiwak, at the commission’s head office in Port Harcourt.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidates cleared the three federal seats.
In Port Harcourt Federal  Constituency 1, Kenneth Chikere (PDP) won by polling 18,904 votes, to defeat Igo Aguma (APC), who scored 6,035 votes.
In Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, Blessing Nsiegbe (PDP) scored 6,968 votes to defeat Collins Owhondah (APC), who polled 3,154 votes.
For Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Kingsley Chinda of PDP scored 27,895 votes, while the APC candidate, Anthony Okocha, got 9,514 votes.
Also, the APC candidate, Benibo Anabraba,  clinched the state constituency seat for Akuku-Toru 2 by scoring 2,970 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Tonye Alalibo, who was disqualified.
Adoki Smart of the PDP in Port Harcourt Constituency 2  scored 15,244 votes to beat Mrs. Irene Inimgba of the APC, who polled 2,844 votes.
The PDP has clinched 3 federal  seats and  10 state seats, while the APC got two seats from the results announced so far.

Five Die In Clash Between PDP, APC Supporters In Niger

Barely 24 hours to the local government elections in Niger State, five supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been killed in a clash with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).  The incident occurred at about 8p.m. on Thursday.

It was learnt that two of the deceased were from an accident involving an APC vehicle which ran into a crowd of PDP supporters. The situation degenerated to a free for all, leading to the attacks on members of both parties.

The aggrieved members of the PDP burnt brooms and threw them at APC supporters, leading to attack and deaths on the other side. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Bida.

Police spokesman, Bala Elikanah, confirmed the incident, saying it was a case of an accident that turned sour. Elikana said the crisis happened after both parties held their campaigns in the ancient city.

16,000 Nigerian Children Under Five Die Everyday In 2015- WHO

The National Surveillance Officer, World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Irene Isibor has said most children in Nigeria still die from vaccine-preventable diseases due to people’s wrong attitude.

Isibor said this at the 19th Biennial Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, held at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos with the theme: “Internally Displaced Persons, Health and Socio-economic Impact.”

She, however, urged Nigerians to develop the right attitudes to immunisation of their children against the child-killer diseases and stop all the myths attached to them.

Isibor said, “Everyday in 2015, 16,000 children under five years continue to die, mostly from preventable causes. Child survival must remain the focus of the post-2015 development agenda.

“The distribution of the estimated deaths among children under five years of age, from diseases that are preventable by vaccination in 2008 in Nigeria shows that measles accounts for 118, 000. Death from Neonatal tetanus-59,000, Tetanus (non-neonatal)-2,000, Pneumococcal disease- 476, 000, Rotavirus- 453,000, Pertussis- 195,000, and Hib-199,000.”

Isibor said that immunisation was one of the most successful public health initiatives, noting that there was a need to fully embrace and implement it.

According to her, the number of children under five years dying every year as of today has reduced to 6.3 million from 12.7 million in 1990 due to administration of vaccines.

Five Oil Marketers Banned From Supplying Aviation Fuel

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed five oil marketing companies to stop supplying aviation fuel to local and foreign airlines operating in the country.

In a notice to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), the NCAA explained that the suspension became necessary due to lack of depot facilities by the oil firms and the inability to verify their integrity and competencies.

The five firms listed in the NCAA circular are; Ascon Oil, Acorn Petroleum, Jushad Oil and Gas, Lubcon and Star Orient Aviation.

The regulatory body has directed the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to deny the companies access to airports in the country until further notice, demanding strict compliance with the directive.

Five Die Mysteriously After Eating Dog Meat In Rivers

At least five persons have  been confirmed dead at Woji, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, after eating dog meat from a popular inn in the area.

Vanguard gathered that Etiaba had been in the area for a long time, running an inn where he cooks only dog meat in Mini-Woji Road at Woji Town.The mysterious death has raised tension in the community as people have begun to question the tragic result that has followed the eating of dog meat alleged to have been cooked by one Friday Dickson, popularly called Etiaba.

Mr Brain Ogbondah, a member of the community, revealed that five people who ate the dog meat prepared by Etiaba, among others, had been confirmed dead some hours after eating the dog meat.

He said the situation has mounted tension in the community, resulting in an emergency meeting by the council of chiefs and elders, with a view to locating other members of the community who also ate the dog meat. He said the suspect fled the community after the five people were confirmed dead.
