Bomb Blast Hits Maiduguri, Many Feared Dead

Many traders and travellers were feared killed on Wednesday as an improvised explosive suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents went off outside a car park in Maiduguri, Borno state.

The explosion went off at a park popularly called Mun Garage at about 9a.m. in the capital city of the north-east Nigerian state.

A witness who said he was lucky to survive the incident said he saw about a dozen bodies covered with blood littering the scene.

“I thank God for sparing my life,,” said Usman Kachalla, a local trader. “I don’t know if it is a suicide bomber, we just heard the blast and I saw my self covered with dust.”

An official of the Civilian-JTF, Alhaji Khalil, confirmed the incident.

“Yes there was a blast early this morning outside Muna Garage along Mafa road. We have sent our operatives down there; but we have not confirmed the casualty,” said the Civilian-JTF official.

Five Feared Killed As Hausa, Fulani Clash Over A Girl In Lagos

No fewer than five persons were yesterday feared killed and many others injured as some Hausa and Fulani men clash in Lagos

The cause of the fracas in Abbattior/Kara, Agege, was the alleged robbery of some Hausa men by some Fulani boys at a hotel in Kogiri.

The police confirmed the clash but said only one person died in the violence that lasted for many hours.

The area was tension-soaked in spite of the heavy security presence and the deployment of an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

There were many accounts of the incident as recounted by those who claimed to have knowledge of it.

A trader who gave his name as Usman said the Hausa boys complained to their brothers and a complaint was filed before the Seriki Fulani, Bello Damobapa, who allegedly took no action to sanction the boys.

Angered by the alleged silence of the Seriki, the Hausa boys were said to have stormed his palace on Tuesday night and vandalised three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) belonging to him, his deputy and secretary.

By yesterday morning, it was learnt that a crowd of Fulani boys armed with sticks, bottles and cutlasses trooped to the railway lines where Hausa scraps collectors operate and started attacking people.

Usman said: “I usually sleep here but last night something just made me go home and I did. So I came out here around 7am and one woman told me to go back that Hausa and Fulani men were fighting.

“But I crossed to the other side and I saw a large number of Fulani people. They were carrying sticks with which they rear cattle, cutlasses and bottles. They were marching down, attacking anyone in sight

“The retreating Hausa men regrouped and confronted the Fulani group. The Hausa group called their kins from other markets for reinforcement. They came from Katangura, Agege and other markets. They chased the Fulani back into the abattoir complex.

“By that time, the police and soldiers had not come.  When they chased the Fulani people back, the Fulani went into the market and started attacking anyone they saw. They attacked even people who are not Hausa.

Police spokesman Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said four persons had been arrested.

She said the fight erupted following the assault of a Hausa girl by a Fulani man.

20 Feared Dead As Kano Varsity Building Collapses

No fewer than 20 people were feared dead when TETFUND sponsored two storey building under construction collapsed at Kano University of Technology .

The incident that occurred midday was said to have trapped a number of labourers at the site.

Eyewitness said that there are heightened fear that the figures may rise following the deployment of men of Fire service.

15 Feared Dead In Attempted Ebonyi Jailbreak

About 15 inmates and one prison officer may have died following an attempted jailbreak at Abakaliki Federal Prison in Ebonyi State.

Governor David Umahi, however, has waded into the matter, promising to carry out rehabilitation of facilities at the prison.

He made this known, yesterday evening, when he visited the scene of the botched jailbreak. The State Comptroller, Mrs. Oputa Emilia, while confirming the incident, however, said three people sustained injuries, denying any deaths or plot by the prisoners to snatch guns from wardens.

Sources, nevertheless, insisted more than 15 persons including a prison officer were killed.

Trouble was said to have started in the morning when the prisoners revolted against what they said was poor treatment, especially inadequate feeding, by the prison’s authorities.

The inmates, who armed themselves with random objects at their disposal, attacked prison officers, injuring many. Two were reportedly hospitalised.

The wardens were said to have opened fire on the protesters, killing more than a dozen.

The situation was brought under control by men of the Nigeria Police Force and Army.

Umahi directed the state’s Director of Prisons, Adaobi Oputa, to compile cases and send them to him to enable him put heads together with the state’s Chief Judge, Aloy Nwankwo, to fast-track justice.

7 Feared Dead In Clash Between Hausa/Fulani & Imo Community

No fewer than seven persons were feared dead yesterday evening in Akokwa community in Ideato North council of Imo State, following a bloody clash between the Hausa/Fulani community and the indigenes.
It was gathered that trouble started when a member of the Hausa community whose name could not be ascertained as at press time had allegedly attacked and killed two of the indigenes and thereafter killed himself.
Angered by the dastardly act, the indigenes in a reprisal attacked the Hausa community, where four persons were killed as well as the destruction of several properties and houses.
According to the a source, “ an Hausa man who lives in Akokwa community had run amok, attacked and killed two indigenes and then killed himself, and angered by the terrible action of the Northerner who attacked an killed innocent indigenes of the community, and in the reprisal attack by the indigenes to avenge the deaths of their kinsmen, four other persons were killed with several properties and houses burnt down.
The source added, “ as I speak to you now many people have fled the community for fear of further attacks.”.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Imo State Police Command Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said that only three persons were killed in the fracas.

Eleven Feared Killed Over Cult Clash In Rivers

Some gunmen suspected to be members of a cult group on the early hours of Sunday killed eleven persons in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The cultists visited three communities in the area, Rumuji, Ovogo and Rumuewhuo communities killing the victim who were suspected to be members of the rival cult group in the area.

Some of the victims killed are, Mr. Nature Oti, Ikechi, Onyebuchi Omuruka, Mr. Chima Omuruka, Mr. Lucky Okwakpam, Mr. Nyovele and others.

It was learnt that the gunmen had earlier attacked Rumuji Divisional Police Headquarters, allegedly overpowered the officers on night duty and rescued detainees in the cell.

It was also gathered that the gunmen broke into the armory of the police at Rumuji and made away with guns and ammunitions.

A visit to the area by the Nation showed that there was still uneasy calm at the Police station, although no officer wanted to say a word to the reporter.

But a police source stated that the police station was under a heavy gunfire attack by some bandits last night.

Another hinted our correspondent that seven people were shot dead in Ovogo community, two in Rumuji and two others in Rumuewhuo communities, making the total number of victim to eleven..

Michael said the residents of the three communities are now on the run following the killings.

He said: “The residents of Ovogo community wake up this morning to witness a lot of dead bodies. There was much shooting last night. The entire Ovogo, Rumuewhuo and Rumuji communities have been deserted because of fear.”

When contacted, Rivers State Police spokesman, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Ahmad Muhammad simply said, “There was something like that but no casualties on either sides.”

Two Feared Killed As UNIPORT Students Protest Over Tuition

Two students of the University of Port Harcourt were on Monday feared killed during a protest over an alleged policy by the management of the institution that tuition must be paid before they would be allowed to take their first semester examinations.

One of the students identified as Peter Ofurun, who was said to have been hit by a bullet from a policeman, had died instantly.

Another student also hit by a bullet was rushed to the hospital, even as sources claimed that she died on the way to the hospital for treatment.

The UNIPORT students’ protest had halted all academic activities in the institution as they demanded that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Lale, should address them and also reverse the policy

Ofurun was a student in the Faculty of Management Science before he met his untimely death.

Sources disclosed that the two students were hit by the bullets when policemen opened fire to disperse the protesting students and stop them from occupying the busy East-West road for a long time.

The students’ presence on the East-West had caused a heavy traffic as travellers waited in vain for the students to disperse for them to continue with their journey.

It was gathered that the students had come out from their various hostels at about 4.30am to express their grievances over the stance of the UNIPORT management to stop them from taking their first semester examination over their non-payment of the fees.

An armoured personnel carrier that was moving close to the institution to ensure that calm returned was also trapped in the traffic.

It was gathered that the UNIPORT management has embraced a policy that stopped students, who had yet to pay their school fees, from taking their exams.

Affected students, according to a source, will also be made to carry over the courses.

But the protesting students described the policy as a form of victimisation, adding that the dwindling economy of the nation was affecting them as they were unable to pay their fees immediately.

15 Feared Dead As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Another Village In Benue

The incursion of suspected herdsmen into parts of Benue State took a worrisome dimension yesterday afternoon when they stormed Tombo in Buruku Local Government Area of the state, killing no fewer than 15 persons in a bloody shootout.

It was learnt that the marauders, who razed parts of the community, took over the deserted villages. According to a source, who spoke on phone from the besieged community, “as I speak with you the people are shooting sporadically and the villagers are fleeing.

“The situation in Tombo at the moment is scary and we are helpless; it is as if we are in a war situation where the mission of the invaders is to occupy and take over our villages.

“It is a pathetic situation because corpses litter the community. Though one cannot give a specific number of casualties, it cannot be less than 15. I know it could be huge because many have been wounded as bullets continue to fly around.

“The people are also burning houses, farms and food stuff as they move into the villages in what looked like a well-coordinated attack.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, who confirmed that seven persons had been killed, said the incident occurred at about 3p.m. Yamu disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Yakadi, had led a team to the crisis zone to ascertain the cause of the renewed clash.

Four Feared Dead At Mile 12 Violence

Violence Thursday morning erupted at Agiliti area, near popular Mile 12 market in Lagos. Although details were sketchy at press time, unconfirmed reports said atleast four persons were killed in the fracas between factions of okada riders in the area.

Eye witnesses also said that security operatives are battling to quell the violence, just as the Lagos State government has shut the market and vowed to deal with miscreants in the area.

Four Feared Dead As Army, Militants Clash

About four persons were feared dead Tuesday in Bori, headquaters of Gokhana local government area as soldiers allegedly engaged loyalists of an ex militant leader, Mr Solomon Ndigbara, aka Osama Bin Ladin in a shoot out.

Some students of the state owned Kenule Beeson Sarowiwa Polytechnic, Bori  said they were trapped in their rooms at press time as they could not find vehicles at the motor park in Bori to convey them to their various destinations.

The students who did not want their names in print said they went for lectures but were told it was a lecture free day” No lectures. We were told the school said it was lecture free day from yesterday till further notice.

We are sure they dont want to announce closure for now, they are studying the situation”, they said.

51 Feared Dead In Dikwa Suicide Attack

At least 51 people died in a suicide bomb attack in Dikwa, a local council in Borno State, villagers say.

Seventy-eight injured persons have also been evacuated to Maiduguri, the capital city for treatment.

A mass burial has already been conducted for the deceased victims, mostly women and children.

Dikwa, 80 kilometres from Maiduguri, once occupied by the Boko Haram terrorists, was declared liberated by the Nigerian Army since July last year.

12 Feared Killed In Rivers As Pirates Ordered Passengers To Jump Into Sea

At least, 12 persons are feared killed following an attack by bandits suspected to be sea pirates.

The sea pirates reportedly operated along the waterways in Kula Community in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The deceased were in four boats when they were attacked by pirates. They reportedly drowned in the sea.

It was gathered that the pirates ordered the occupants of the four boats to jump into the sea.

The four boats were said to have earlier left Kula jetty and moving towards Abonema in Asari-Toru Local Government Area before they met the pirates, who robbed the occupants of their personal belongings before ordering them to jump into the sea at gunpoint.

It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 6.30am on Monday and the hoodlums escaped with the four boats.

“The pirates stopped the passenger boats in the middle of the high sea and the occupants were forced to jump into the sea after being threatened with the gun. The pirates left with the four passenger boats,” a source within Kula said.

OPC Members Clash in Kwara, Three Feared Dead

Three people are feared dead following a clash among members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in the Irepodun LGA of Kwara State on Sunday.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a further six people were injured during the fight.

It has been alleged that the clash came about as a result of a protest held by expelled members of the group during an official meeting at the St. Paul Anglican Primary School. An official at the Agbamu Police Post has confirmed the death toll.
