Facebook lauds Saraki for opening up N’Assembly via platform

World’s most popular social media platform, Facebook, has commended Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for opening up the activities of the 8th National Assembly through various channels, especially the daily Facebook Live Video streaming of Senate plenary sittings.

The Chief Product Officer and Company Lead on Product Management and Development of Facebook, Christopher Cox, gave the commendation while speaking at The Future of Media Keynote Session and opening of the annual Social Media Week held at the Landmark Centre in Lagos on Monday.

Reacting to the development, the Office of the President of the Senate in a statement yesterday said it was “indeed delighted at the endorsement of the Senate President” by the social media giant, Facebook.

According to the Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, “This commendation reinforces one of the core mandates of the Senate President to the New Media unit, which is to bridge the gap between the Senate and Nigerians.”

“The Nigerian Senate facebook live streaming has an average view of four million unique clicks monthly for the plenary live feeds and we will be expanding coverage to courtesy calls, committee hearings and oversights in the next few months.

“You would recall that Saraki personally attended the 2016 edition of the Social Media Week in company of Senators Foster Ogola, Dino Melaye and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi amongst others, where he spoke on the topic: ‘Promoting Online Communities to improve Participatory Governance’ and subsequently had a no-holds-barred interaction with traditional and social media enthusiasts on how to continue bridging the gap between elected government officials and Nigerians passionate about the use of social media for political engagement.

“We are encouraged to do more with this commendation and wish to kindly reiterate and assure our friends, from the online community and beyond, of the commitment of the Senate President towards ensuring that the 8th National Assembly continues to witness improved transparency and accountability on government functions and people participation,” he said.

Has Social Media Tampered with our Reasoning Abilities? – By Otolorin Olabode

It seems social media has come to stay in Nigeria especially among our youths and adults. After the successful penetration of Facebook, subsequent entries of Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn have been greeted with lot of views and reviews.

However as it is with everything in Life, an advantage of a thing likewise has a disadvantage. Social Media has benefited various classes of People in Nigeria. From The Bloggers (Omojuwa, Linda Ikeji, OloriSuperGal) to the upcoming artistes, social media has been a huge benefit to a lot of people.

Nevertheless, it seems Social Media has altered our brain’s configuration settings. An average Nigerian wakes up and the first thing he does is to check Whatsapp messages. Thoughts like “Has He replied” “Has She accepted to go out on a date with me”, are always popular on the minds of the Nigerian Youth.

Another may decide to check on Instagram if his recent post has garnered likes or how many followers He has gained overnight.

Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all rank high in the list of social Media Apps on an average Nigerian Youth smartphone. Especially on Twitter where all kinds of savages are recorded. An average Nigerian can spend 10hours tweeting, retweeting and replying on mostly trivial and unnecessary issues. Why have we not tried to convert those hours of Joblessness to ones of making money.

Especially our celebrities who most Nigerians troll and condemn on these social medias, these people are making money off those controversies. Remember the time when Linda Ikeji got embroiled in a fight with Wizkid? Truth is she had many visitors, views and comments on her blog due to that controversy.

It’s time for every Nigerian to make judicious use of social Media.

Stop wasting time and energy begging for likes to win a competition on Instagram when you could make far enough money through efficient use of social media.

Many have abused social media to the extent of taking photos in heir friends’ clothes just to post on Instagram or rather taking photos in their lingerie or posing half-naked.

Relationships have been formed on various social media sites but it’s on record that Social media has also destroyed some “once upon a time fruitful relationship”. The thing is news and information spreads much faster on social media.

Accusations of infidelity ranging from the husband seen in company with another woman to the wife captured in an hotel with another man, what about the nude photos and video of ladies released by their ex-boyfriend? Even our parents are on Instagram stalking and monitoring their children!

Definitely, Social media has tampered with our brain’s configuration settings!

Facebook fined $500 million for copyright infringement

A U.S. jury in Texas, according to media reports on Thursday, ordered Facebook Inc, its virtual reality unit Oculus, and other defendants to pay a combined $500 million to ZeniMax Media Inc, a video game publisher that says Oculus stole its technology.

The jury in Federal Court in Dallas found Oculus, which Facebook acquired for about two billion dollars in 2014, used ZeniMax’s computer code to launch the Rift virtual-reality headset.

ZeniMax alleges that video game designer John Carmack developed core parts of the Rift’s technology while working at a ZeniMax subsidiary.

Oculus hired Carmack in 2013.

Facebook’s stock was not impacted by the verdict.

The company’s shares were up three per cent in after-hours trading following the release of a fourth-quarter earnings report that beat expectations.

ZeniMax Chief Executive Robert Altman hailed the verdict and said in a statement the company was considering seeking an order blocking Oculus and Facebook from using its code.

It is unclear what impact that would have on the Rift’s market availability.

Though the jury ruled that none of the defendants misappropriated ZeniMax’s trade secrets, it found Oculus’ use of computer code directly infringed on ZeniMax’s copyright.

The jurors held Carmack and different Oculus co-founders Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe liable for forms of infringement.

The jury also found Oculus liable for breaching a non-disclosure agreement Luckey signed with ZeniMax in 2012, when he began corresponding about virtual reality with Carmack.

The two met on an online forum.

Well-known for helping to conceive games such as “Quake” and “Doom,” Carmack worked for id Software LLC before that company was acquired by ZeniMax.

He is now the Chief Technology Officer at Oculus.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg testified last month during the three-week trial that none of ZeniMax’s proprietary code was incorporated into the Rift.

Though the jury did not find Facebook directly liable, it would likely be on the hook for damages owed by its subsidiary, absent an agreement stating otherwise.

In a statement, Oculus spokeswoman Emily Bauer noted the jury’s finding on trade secrets theft and said the company would appeal.

“We’re obviously disappointed by a few other aspects of today’s verdict, but we are undeterred,” she said. ” Oculus products are built with Oculus technology.”

Facebook Finally Gets Serious About Fighting Fake News

Facebook is taking new measures to curb the spread of fake news on its huge and influential social network, focusing on the “worst of the worst” offenders.

The online behemoth is going into partnership with outside fact-checkers to sort honest news reports from made-up stories that play to people’s passions and preconceived notions.

Fake news stories touch on a broad range of subjects, from unproven cancer cures to celebrity hoaxes and backyard Bigfoot sightings. But fake political stories have drawn attention because of the possibility they influenced public perceptions and could have swayed the US presidential election.

There have been other dangerous real-world consequences.

A fake story about a child sex ring at a Washington DC pizza joint prompted a man to fire an assault rifle inside the restaurant, Comet Ping Pong.

“We do believe that we have an obligation to combat the spread of fake news,” said John Hegeman, Facebook’s vice president of product management on news feed, in an interview.

But he added Facebook also takes its role to provide people with an open platform seriously, and it is not the company’s place to decide what is true or false.

To start, Facebook is making it easier for users to report fake news when they see it, which they can now do in two steps. If enough people report a story as fake, Facebook will pass it to third-party, fact-checking organisations that are part of the nonprofit Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network.

Facebook buys facial recognition tech startup.

Facebook on Wednesday said that it has bought facial recognition startup FacioMetrics, potentially using the technology for photo or video effects to better challenge rival Snapchat.

“How people share and communicate is changing and things like masks and other effects allow people to express themselves in fun and creative ways,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an email reply to an AFP inquiry.

“We’re excited to welcome the FacioMetrics team who will help bring more fun effects to photos and videos and build even more engaging sharing experiences on Facebook.”

Silicon Valley-based Facebook did not disclose financial terms of the deal to buy FacioMetrics, which was spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania.

FacioMetrics was founded in 2015 and specialises in using artificial intelligence to give facial image analysis capabilities to applications that run on smartphones.

The technology has potential in a host of applications, including those focused on animation, measuring audience reactions, and virtual or augmented realities, FacioMetrics founder and chief executive Fernando De la Torre said in a release.

“We’re taking a big step forward by joining the team at Facebook, where we’ll be able to advance our work at an incredible scale, reaching people from across the globe,” De la Torre said.

Using FacioMetrics to let users of Facebook, or subsidiaries such as Instagram, have fun with photos or video could be a counter-move to those kinds of features offered in “filters” at vanishing message service Snapchat.

Parent company Snap estimates it has more than 100 million users globally of the service for sending videos, images and text messages which vanish after being viewed. Some reports say it generates 10 billion video views per day.

Since trying unsuccessfully to buy Southern California-based Snapchat several years ago, Facebook has turned to cloning popular features.

Facebook stops collecting WhatsApp user data in Europe after govt pressure

Facebook has stopped collecting WhatsApp user data across Europe, the Financial Times reports, bowing to pressure from privacy watchdogs across the continent.

The shift in policy means that European users of the messaging app will no longer have information — including phone numbers — relayed to Facebook, but the social network says it may only be a temporary suspension while the laws are debated.

“We hope to continue our detailed conversations with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office and other data protection officials,” Facebook says, confirming that it “remain[s] open to working collaboratively to address their questions.”

Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014, but only started to collect data from its users in August this year.

That move drew criticism from Europe’s data collection authorities, 28 of whom signed an open letter sent last month in which they urged WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to suspend data collection until the legality was worked out.

The Irish Data Protection Commissioner’s office — Facebook’s European regulatory body — confirmed to the Financial Times that Facebook had indeed suspended European data collection last week.

The company had already been ordered to halt the practice in Germany: German authorities ruled that the collection of app data constituted “an infringement of national data protection law,” and also demanded that Facebook delete all data that had already been obtained on the country’s 35 million WhatsApp users.

Other countries, including the UK, France, and Italy, have their own ongoing investigations into Facebook’s data collection.

Mark Zuckerberg defends Facebook over Donald Trump.

Facing criticism that fake news on Facebook aided the rise of Donald Trump, founder Mark Zuckerberg has strongly defended his network.

Speaking on stage at Techonomy, a technology conference in California, Zuckerberg said Facebook should not be held responsible.

“The idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea,” he said.

“If you believe that then I don’t think you have internalized the message Trump supporters are trying to send in this election.”

Some data has shown that fake stories were being far more widely shared on the platform than follow up stories debunking the claims.

For an increasing number of people, particularly Americans, Facebook is becoming the primary source of news coverage.

The site’s News Feed is specifically designed to show users content it thinks will be of most interest, creating what some describe as a “filter bubble” that reinforces a person’s view without injecting differences in opinion.

Earlier this year, Facebook was accused of being anti-Trump after it was alleged its human moderators were favouring liberal stories from appearing in people’s “trending stories” box.

While denying that claim, the site did sack its human team, instead relying solely on an algorithm to determine which stories were shown to be most popular, reports the BBC.

As a consequence, stories which were later proved entirely false appeared on the timelines of a large number of users, reports the BBC.

When asked about checks and balances needed to keep a company like Facebook in line, Zuckerberg said it was about “listening to what people want”.

“My goal, and what I care about, is giving people the power to share so we can make the world more open and connected. That requires building a good version of News Feed. We still have work to do on that. We’re going to keep improving it.

“On the community guidelines, I think as norms change and people want to see more news, I think we’ll have to continue to evolve the guidelines to reflect the value that the community holds.”

At the same event, Zuckerberg offered an optimistic view of Trump’s presidency, saying that his goals of improving global healthcare and connectivity did not necessarily require the co-operation of government.

Nigerian Students win N1.4m in Facebook hackathon challenge.

250 young, talented students from across the country participated in a hackathon challenge at the CyberXchange conference sponsored by Facebook and over a million naira was awarded to the winning teams.

The students were placed into groups and each group had a presentation, putting forward their solutions to the judges who were Yemi Saka of Ernst and Young, Babafemi Ogungbamila of Interswitch Limited, Regina Wallace-Jones of Facebook, and Bankole Oluwafemi of Techcabal.com

hackathon-winners-3

The team that emerged overall winner impressed the judges and audience by coming up with multi-factor authentication for a large enterprise to help secure the accounts of their employees.

The winning team was awarded N700, 000, the second-place team received N400,000 while the third place team received N300,000.

hackathon-winners-1

Regina Wallace-Jones, head of security operations at Facebook, and a judge at the hackathon said: “The competitors worked tirelessly to create their solutions, and we were inspired by their dedication and passion for security.

“Encouraging this kind of talent is important to the future of the security industry, and that is why we met with several university professors at CyberXchange to talk about how to continue to strengthen security curriculum and training”, Regina added.

Snapchat features may soon be available on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is in the beta stages of testing a new feature called ‘Status’ which is very similar to what Snapchat offers.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, is becoming increasingly relentless in the leeching of Snapchat as there are many aspects of the platform in its new applications.

Facebook offered to buy Snapchat in 2013 for $3 billion but Snapchat turned the deal down.

After adding the ‘stories’ feature to Instagram, Facebook is prepping Whatsapp for the same upgrade.

This feature lets users share images with doodles and text captions, and just like Snapchat, they vanish in 24 hours.

To make this happen, a new tab will be added between Chats and Calls.

According to BRG, the move seems to be a part of Facebook’s new video-first strategy, which Zuckerberg highlighted during Facebook’s third-quarter earnings call earlier this week.

“You can see that a little bit in the announcement and launch of Instagram Stories and what we’re doing with Messenger and some of the additional tests on Facebook and the camera work that we’re doing in WhatsApp.

“So this is across the whole family of apps. This is a big part of the product experience that we want to deliver,” said Zuckerberg.

Facebook Shuts Down Ads For An Entire Country

Facebook has taken the unusual step of shutting down ads for an entire nation.

The social network said it has turned off ads in Thailand following the death of the country’s deeply revered king. It’s the first time Facebook has imposed an ad blackout for a whole country.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 70-year reign came to an end on Thursday when he died at the age of 88. Facebook (FB, Tech30) said in a post that removing ads is “a cultural custom” during the mourning period.

It admitted that it doesn’t yet know how long Thailand will be mourning the king, whose unifying appeal stretched across Thai society.

According to the royal palace, all government buildings will fly the national flag at half-staff for 30 days starting Friday, and all civil servants have been ordered to wear black clothing for a year.

Facebook declined to comment further on the ad shutdown. Its post said advertisers within Thailand can still run ads outside the country.

Other websites took measures to reflect the country’s somber mood. Google (GOOGL, Tech30)’s homepage in Thailand was changed to a dark-gray-and-white color scheme, although ads were still showing up for some searches.

Nigerian startup wins Facebook-sponsored innovation challenge

Godwin Benson, a Nigerian tech entrepreneur, has won the Internet.org innovation challenge for education.

Benson is the creator of Tuteria Nigeria, an online platform that links up those interested in learning to potential tutors.

Mark Zuckerberg, who met with Benson during his visit to Nigeria, shared news of the innovator’s achievement.

Besides Benson, five other tech startups emerged winners of the innovation challenge.

They are; Esoko, Hyperion Development, MPedigree Goldkeys, SaferMom, and mPharma Mutti.

Zuckerberg wrote: “Last month in Abuja, Nigeria, I met Godwin Benson. Godwin founded Tuteria Nigeria, an online platform that connects people seeking to learn with people nearby who can teach them.

“Tuteria Nigeria won one of six awards for the Internet.org Innovation Challenge for services that provide education and economic development opportunities across the African continent.

“These services are all examples of the great work being done by entrepreneurs across the African continent to strengthen their communities and create opportunity.

“Congratulations to the winners and all the other entrepreneurs who are doing this important work”, said Zuckerberg.

Internet.org is a partnership between social networking services company Facebook and six companies (Samsung, Ericsson, MediaTek, Opera Software, Nokia and Qualcomm) that plans to bring affordable access to selected internet services to less developed countries.

Facebook ‘Blocks Accounts’ Of Palestinian Journalists

Editors from two Palestinian news publications based in the occupied West Bank say their Facebook accounts were suspended last week and that no reason was provided, alleging their pages may have been censored because of a recent agreement between the US social media giant and the Israeli government aimed at tackling “incitement”.

Last week, four editors from the Shehab News Agency, which has more than 6.3 million likes on Facebook, and three executives from the Quds News Network, with about 5.1 million likes, reported that they could not access their personal accounts.

Both agencies cover daily news in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Nisreen al-Khatib, a translator and journalist at the Quds News Network, told Al Jazeera that the publication believes the account suspensions were triggered by an agreement between Facebook and Israel earlier this month, in which they agreed to jointly combat what Israeli claims is “incitement” by Palestinians on social media.

Daughter sues parents for sharing her childhood photos on Facebook

An 18-year-old from Austria is suing her parents for allegedly posting hundreds of photos from her childhood on Facebook.

Now we all know that over-sharing images of your children can come off a tad bit cloying, and at its worst is somewhat of a social media faux pas, but sharing 500 photos is extreme by anyone’s standards.

That’s what the daughter alleges her parents did and, to top it all off, she claims the images are of a sensitive nature, including pictures of her having her nappy changed, and sitting on the potty, reports The Local.

They knew no shame and no limit and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot,” said the teen. “Every stage was photographed and then made public.”

The parents have allegedly been sharing the images with their 700 Facebook friends since 2009, with her father insisting it is their right to publish the images they took.

The teen, who is from the southern Austrian state of Carinthia, said that the sharing of the photos despite her repeated protests left her with no choice but to take legal action.

Michael Rami, a legal adviser cited as her lawyer by The Local, claimed the case is the first of its kind in the country. He added that if it can be proven that the images violated her right to a personal life than she has a good chance of winning the case against her parents. Referencing similar cases that took place abroad, Rami said that the outcome could result in the parents having to pay financial compensation for the suffering she met with as a result of their actions. The case will go to trial in November.

Parents keen on sharing every single moment of their child’s life online should heed this warning. Alas, you never know what your children may object to when they come of age. In fact, law enforcement agencies in France and Germany have previously issued public warnings regarding the legal consequences parents could face when publishing images of their children on the web.

Reuben Abati : The Mark Zuckerberg Visit

Read his piece below…
Mark Zuckerberg’s two-day visit to Nigeria has done a lot for the country; it is a pity no government official or agency has tried to tap into the gains of that visit. He arrived at a time there was much talk about economic recession, concerns about companies folding up or retrenching staff, or international investors leaving the country in droves, out of frustration with the uncertainties in the system.
Zuckerberg’s arrival raised our hopes: co-founder of Facebook and the 5th richest man in the world, sneaked into Nigeria to meet with developers and entrepreneurs and to discuss investments in Nigeria’s growing start-up ecosystem. And for two days, he went round the city of Lagos, visiting start-ups and interacting with young entrepreneurs.

The way Nigeria is often painted abroad, and in those travel advisories that foreign ministries issue, you would think Nigeria is such an unsafe place where kidnappers are permanently on the prowl. Zuckerberg helped to show the rest of the world that Nigeria is not so bad at all, and that something really exciting is happening here among the country’s young population. He had no bodyguards. He did not have to hire a lorry load of Nigerian policemen to keep watch over him. He trekked on the streets of Lagos, surrounded by a few of his hosts. On Wednesday morning, he jogged across the Ikoyi-Lekki bridge. He ate pounded yam, shrimps, snails (I thought they said he is a vegan!) and jollof rice (Nigerian jollof (!) not that one from Ghana). His visit went smoothly. More investors may well be encouraged to visit Nigeria too, seeing how confidently a whole $53.7 billion walked freely about in Nigeria, and he was not stolen or kidnapped.

Zuckerberg’s visit also provided great publicity for Nigeria’s emerging Silicon Valley, and the young entrepreneurs to whom Zuckerberg paid compliments. He has already invested in a Nigerian start-up, Andela, and he has made friends with other young Nigerians, the guys behind Jobberman and C-Creation Hub (CcHUB) and so many others. Zuckerberg cut the picture throughout his visit of a true inspirational figure. His simplicity and humility was impressive. He kept going about in a T-shirt, and interacted freely with everyone he met.

Many young Nigerians can learn from his example: the way some people whose biggest possession is a laptop sometimes carry their shoulders in the sky, if they were to be half of what Zuckerberg is, they won’t just claim that they are voltrons or overlords, they will look for more intimidating labels. But Mark Zuckerberg, who is just 32, shows that it is not all about money, or influence, character matters. There is no doubt that his hosts were also impressed with him.  And that probably explains the protest that greeted the attempt by CNN International and American artiste, Tyrese Gibson, to refer to the visit as Zuckerberg’s visit to sub-Saharan Africa. Young Nigerians kept shouting back that Zuckerberg is in Nigeria, not sub-Saharan Africa! They wanted the publicity for their country.

Inspired by Zuckerberg’s visit as the tech entrepreneurs in Nigeria’s Silicon Valley may have been, the Nigerian government should see in the visit, and the excitement that it has generated, the need to provide greater support for technological innovation in the country. There are many young Nigerians out there who are gifted, hardworking and innovative. They belong to the 21st Century. They are aggressive. They want to operate at the international level and become superstars. They have ideas. They are ready and willing. The basic thing that government owes them is to provide an enabling environment for their talents to flower. It has taken a few young men and ladies to bring Mark Zuckerberg to Nigeria. There are other young Nigerians doing wonderful things in other sectors of the economy who can save this country if they are given the chance. There is also a large army of untapped and yet-to-be-discovered talents, whose future we cannot afford to waste. Investment in education will help. Uncommon sense will make things happen.

Zuckerberg’s visit also did a lot for Nollywood. He described Nollywood as “a national treasure”. That statement should be framed and sent to every major agency in the private and public sectors in Nigeria. He may not yet have invested in Nollywood, but there was no doubt that the members of Nollywood and other celebrities who met with him appreciated their being recognized by one of the most successful young men of the 21st century. I watch Nollywood movies, but I don’t think I have ever seen those Nollywood stars who met with Zuckerberg smile that heartily and broadly – not even in the movies. The ones who did not bare their 32, were staring at the Facebook ambassador in that typical Nigerian fashion: “ah, see money, Mark, abi make I send you script make you sponsor?”

The way the visit went, if Mark Zuckerberg had wanted a Nigerian wife, or girlfriend, he would have been met at every turn with echoes of “Yes, Yes, Yes…come and hold something.” But he is already married. So, don’t worry, Priscilla Chan (Mark’s wife), your husband is safe, Nigerian ladies will only admire him, they don’t mean any harm, and they won’t initiate him into coded runs.  But of course you trust him – you know he is not Justin Bieber. But money is good oh. After money, it is money. Ha, Ori lonise, eda ko la’ropin o, Edumare funmi ni money…

Altogether, it was a great business outing for Zuckerberg and Facebook. Over 16 million Nigerians are on Facebook, it is the largest and most influential social media platform in the country; on a daily basis, over 7 million Nigerians log onto the website. Many more are on whatsapp, another Facebook acquired platform. With Zuckerberg’s visit, that number is bound to grow.  The strategic friendships and partnerships that he has been able to build is a demonstration of power and influence: Facebook is on the ground in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, and he has taken that further by visiting Kenya – look beyond the T-shirt, this young American billionaire is building constituencies and spheres of influence across Africa; he is exploring new markets and staying ahead of the competition in a continent that many other investors may overlook, or desert for reasons of inconvenience.

As a business strategy, Mark Zuckerberg’s exploration of the African market is brilliant. It may be the subject someday of a Management, Leadership and Marketing Class. Businesses must innovate, innovate and innovate and the best way to do that is through people.  Nigerian entrepreneurs have a lot to learn in this regard: the mindset of the business leader is the soul of strategy. There are too many thermostatic leaders in the Nigerian business environment, and that is why at the slightest confrontation with hard choices, they close shop and run. Here is Mark Zuckerberg, in the face of proven recession, he wants to support start-ups and SMEs in Nigeria; at a time others are fleeing, he is coming into Nigeria and Africa. He is smart. Wicked problems in a business environment should inspire genius, change and innovation. That is what leadership is all about.

Beyond business and culture, there was a small political side to the Zuckerberg visit. The Facebook CEO had said Facebook will promote the use of Hausa Language, some reports indicated he had said he loves Hausa language, and then a storm followed, resulting in a hot, healthy spat between two friends, colleagues and brothers of mine, Femi Fani-Kayode (@realFFK) and Reno Omokri (@renoomokri), with one claiming that Americans are promoting Northern hegemony (John Kerry, now Zuckerberg and Facebook), and the other saying it is not a big deal, and in the exchange, we got some lectures about Nigeria’s ethnic and hegemonic politics.

On Wednesday at a town hall meeting, Zuckerberg more or less edited himself by saying “I am glad we support Hausa, and we are planning on supporting more languages soon.” He didn’t specify what those other languages are. I hope he knows Nigeria has over 400 languages and ethnic groups, and they all form part of the Nigerian Facebook community. He should tread carefully here, because I am not too sure Facebook can adopt Yoruba language before Igbo, or vice versa, without a social media war on its hands, and if Facebook chooses to accommodate the three major languages in Nigeria, it could be confronted with a major battle over minority rights on its platform. We are like that in this country, Mark.

But the difference is that Mark Zuckerberg is not a politician, he has voted only once (in 2008) and he doesn’t make political statements, except when business interests are at stake. Eyin boys, FFK and Reno, Zuckerberg doesn’t really care about the local fights we fight: he wants to create new markets and if promoting Hausa on Facebook will create more customers in that part of Nigeria, so be it. And in case religion is part of that politics, it doesn’t concern him either, he was born Jewish, but he is a self-declared atheist. If he worships any religion, it is the religion of Facebook. In Nigeria, he has Igbos, Yorubas and other Nigerians working for him. (https://techpoint.ng/2016/08/31/nigerians-working-with-mark-zuckerberg-facebook/).

He is interested in their intellect not where they come from.  One more thing: The Nigerian government snubbed him or did he snub our government? When he got to Kenya, he was received at the airport by the Cabinet Secretary of Information and Communications and later given a delicious lunch of fish, semo and soup (https://techpoint.ng/2016/09/01/mark-zuckerberg-in-kenya/), no Nigerian government official offered him common sachet water and yet he was here to create jobs and markets! We shouldn’t frighten him away with our politics! The good news, though, is that he is a humanist even if a secular humanist: End of story.

Thank you Marky, for the visit and for giving us a good story to tell.

Facebook To Embrace More Nigerian Languages- Zuckerberg

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has pledged to use more Nigerian languages in offering services on Facebook.

Zuckerberg, who is currently on a business visit to Nigeria, made the promise at a meeting with software developers and ICT entrepreneurs on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said the social media platform currently allows the use of Hausa language on Facebook.

“I am glad we support Hausa and we are planning on supporting a lot more languages soon.’’

Zuckerberg also expressed his willingness to work with local content providers in bringing Nigerian communities to the internet.

He said that having local contents on the Facebook platform would ensure that more people were connected.

According to him, in the next 10 to 15 years, Facebook hopes to get everyone in the world connected online.

Zuckerberg is currently meeting with developers, entrepreneurs and startups.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Visits Nigeria

We’ve just confirmed that Mark Zuckerberg is at the CoCreation Hub, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria at this very moment. Apparently, he arrived this afternoon and is meeting with a few key players in the Nigerian tech ecosystem.

Mark was in Rome with his wife, Priscilla, until a few hours ago (according to his Facebook page). He held a Q&A session, visited the Pope and did a few “touristy” things. This visit to Nigeria wasn’t announced so you’ll permit if I go off into speculation.

There’s been a lot of Facebook-related development in Nigeria so there’s a ton of reasons why Mark may be visiting. First, Free Basics launched in Nigeria and Mark showed his support for the Jobberman team. Then the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative invested $24 million in Andela. Facebook’s developer workshop is happening tomorrow, and yesterday, we reported that Facebook is partnering with Cool Link to launch Express Wifi in Lagos some time this week.

I reckon Mark is in Nigeria to kill all these birds – visit Jobberman, the Andela team he’s invested in, attend the developer workshop, launch Express Wifi AND have policy-centred conversations with the Nigerian government to further Facebook’s cause.

You’ll know more when we know more.

Facebook Apologizes For Promoting False Story On Megyn Kelly In #Trending

Facebook is apologizing after featuring a fake, sensational news story about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in its influential “Trending” topics section.

The story, which has since been removed from the list, falsely claimed that the cable channel had fired Kelly for being “a closet liberal who actually wants Hillary to win.”

The story about Kelly’s supposed firing came from the right-wing website End The Fed, which boasts headlines like “What Obama Has to Say About ‘White Folks’ Will Make Your Blood Boil” and “Eric Bolling Exposes New Dirty Tricks Clintons Used to Escape Jail Time and Become Millionaires.”

The fact that Facebook was taken in and promoted the fake story was captured by the Independent Journal Review’s Justin Green, who tweeted a screenshot of Facebook’s Trending list before it was corrected.

Facebook Helps Find Baby Lost In Nice Attack

An eight-month-old baby boy lost in the chaos after a truck rammed into a crowd in the French Riviera city of Nice killing at least 84 people was tracked down through Facebook on Friday.

Tiava Banner — who said she was not the mother of the baby — sent out an appeal on Facebook looking for any information on the whereabouts of the child who had been lost in his blue stroller when the rampaging truck sent hundreds fleeing in panic as they watched Bastille Day fireworks.

The post was shared thousands of times until it was updated with: “Found! Thank you Facebook and all those who helped us.”

A member of the family contacted by AFP on Friday said: “A young woman found him and took him home with her. She then went online and found the photo of the baby on Facebook.”

The woman then contacted the baby’s parents.

Dozens of other people appealed through social media to find missing loved ones.

“We are worried to death”, “We haven’t heard from him since he went to see the fireworks”, were some of the messages.

Many of the missing were children and teenagers.

Authorities said Friday that two children were among the dead and around 50 children were in hospital.

Nigeria May Regulate Use Of WhatsApp, BBM, Skype, Facebook

The Nigerian Communications Commission is considering a framework for the regulation of over-the-top services in the Nigerian telecoms market.

Over-the-top services, otherwise known as OTT, are services carried over the networks, delivering value to customers, but without any carrier service provider being involved in planning, selling, provisioning, or servicing them.

OTT services are offered through Internet communication.

In Nigeria, the most common OTT services are WhatsApp messenger, BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook, and Skype which are classified under social media applications.

In other words, telecom operators such as MTN, Etisalat, Glo, and Airtel lack direct control or influence over WhatsApp messenger, BBM, Facebook or Skype.

Internet telephony and live streaming are also part of OTT services.

The growth of OTT services is encouraged by the access to 3G and 4G networks which offer mobile broadband and high speed IP data.

A report, ‘An Overview of Provision of Over The Top [OTT] Services’ published recently by the Policy, Competition & Economic Analysis Department of the Nigerian Communications Commission, says OTT services were becoming a threat to the traditional telephone network operators.

This development, the report said, is a global issue.

The threat, according to the NCC report, comes from the fact that Internet telephony is not only cheap, and free in some cases, but it also offers many features previously unavailable with telephones, therefore making it more attractive to consumers.

And unlike the traditional telephone network operator, the operators of Internet telephony don’t pay tolls for their services.

Besides, the report said since telecom operators such as MTN, Etisalat, Glo and Airtel do not have control over WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook and the rest of the social media applications, they (the telecom operators) cannot do not generate revenues from services offered through these applications.

Mark Zuckerberg Reveals He Is Designing A Robot That Will Look After His Daughter & Home

The billionaire founder of Facebook has revealed plans to build a domestic robot capable of babysitting his infant daughter. Mark Zuckerberg wants to build a “simple artificial intelligence to run my home” by the end of the year.

He announced this ambitious scheme in his annual New Year’s Resolution Facebook post. Zuck said his “personal challenge” for the year would be to design a robot which can perform basic childcare and other tasks around the house.

“I’ll start teaching it to understand my voice to control everything in our home – music, lights, temperature and so on. I’ll teach it to let friends in by looking at their faces when they ring the doorbell. I’ll teach it to let me know if anything is going on in Max’s room that I need to check on when I’m not with her,” he wrote.

Facebook Offers Employees $10,000 To Move Within 10 Miles Of Its Headquarters

Facebook Inc is offering employees at its Silicon Valley headquarters at least $10,000 to move closer to the office, a reflection of the challenges many tech companies face in the increasingly expensive and congested San Francisco Bay area.

To qualify for the payment, which the social networking firm started offering in the last 12 months, according to current and former Facebook workers, employees must buy or rent a home within 10 miles (16 km) of the Facebook campus at One Hacker Way, a desolate strip of road overlooking a marsh about 30 miles (48 km) south of San Francisco.

Some Facebook employees with families to support could earn a one-off payment of $15,000 or more for housing costs.

Facebook’s efforts, along with similar programs at some other technology companies including investment management technology company Addepar, data company Palantir and software firm SalesforceIQ, a unit of Salesforce.com Inc, could help ease a major source of tension in San Francisco: an influx of young, wealthy tech workers who commute to Silicon Valley on private buses and often displace lower-income residents.

But Silicon Valley has a housing affordability crisis of its own, and if Facebook’s programme gains traction it could further accelerate the gentrification of nearby communities, especially the low-income city of East Palo Alto.

“A lot of local families are going to get hurt,” said John Liotti, chief executive officer of East Palo Alto community advocacy group Able Works.

Facebook says the programme is not about social engineering. “Our benefits at Facebook are designed to support our employees and the people who matter most to them at all stages of life,” a Facebook spokesman said.

Cynics suggest the company might be looking to encourage people to spend more time in the office while also cutting the cost of its luxury bus service, whose drivers recently unionized.

For Mark Shim, an engineer who had worked at Addepar, living across the street from the Mountain View-based company earned him a $300-a-month bonus. But the money, which was a taxed benefit, wasn’t the reason behind his housing decision.

“For me, it wasn’t financially driven as my rent has gone up more than 60 percent since I moved to Mountain View and the stipend doesn’t keep up with the rent spikes in the area,” said Shim, who has since joined another company.

“If you live closer to work you are less worried about leaving at an exact time, and if you’re in the middle of solving a cool problem, you’ll spend the extra time to finish that up.”
Lissa Minkin, vice president of people at Addepar, said the perk was designed to help employees spend more time on personal interests or with their families.

“Not having a long commute makes a huge positive impact on maintaining a healthy work-life balance,” she said.
Tech workers say the commute is getting worse. What would have been a one-hour commute each way three years ago has stretched to 90 minutes or more as the tech economy has boomed and more cars hit the road.

San Francisco-area drivers spend more time in gridlock than those of any city other than Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, according to traffic data service Inrix.

Still, plenty of young techies are willing to endure it. Take Nilesh Patel, a single technology worker who commutes from San Francisco to a large company almost 40 miles (64 km) away so he can cultivate his rich social life in the city.

“I didn’t want to move into one of those depressing bachelor complexes,” he said about the generic Silicon Valley apartment buildings that often house people like him.

Even for those who might consider a more suburban lifestyle, $10,000 doesn’t necessarily go very far in a city like Menlo Park, where the average rental is $3,600 a month, according to data from online real estate company Trulia.

And moving south won’t provide an escape from the resentment tech workers have engendered in San Francisco neighborhoods like the Mission, where community activists protesting gentrification have blockaded tech-company buses.

In East Palo Alto, once a crime-ridden city that provided an element of gritty flair amid the bland office parks and strip malls that dominate much of Silicon Valley, the recent influx of tech money has brought plenty of benefits.

Crime, including robbery, auto theft and rape, has declined over the years, according to city data. New businesses like the city’s only full-fledged grocery store have opened, and many new arrivals are trying to help by tutoring kids and donating to local causes, said Liotti.

But the newcomers, who locals call “los Facebuqueros” regardless of where they work, have also contributed to increasing evictions and sky-rocketing rents.

“We’re dealing with a huge displacement of lower-income individuals,” said Tom Myers, executive director of the Community Services Agency in Mountain View, which this month passed ordinances to try to take pressure off lower-income renters.

There’s also the chance that the housing incentives backfire.
Old hands remember a time when Facebook offered a few hundred dollars for employees who lived within a few blocks of its old offices in Palo Alto. Landlords got wind of the situation and quickly raised rents to match, they say.

How Facebook Can Help You Get Over Your Ex

Facebook has made breakups way more complicated than they need to be. First you have to deal with the actual breakup, then you have to change your relationship status, and then you have to keep seeing your ex’s name and face everywhere — at least if you’re trying to take the high road and not unfriend him or her. But after years of agonizing awkwardness, Facebook has finally decided to do something about it.

On Thursday, the website announced it’s testing a new way to avoid your ex in your news feed. It’s currently only rolling out for mobile users in the United States, but it will spread elsewhere if user feedback is good. You can do nearly all of it manually already.

Facebook Activates Safety Check Again After Bomb Blast In Yola, Nigeria

Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg took to his Facebook wall to announce that they have activated the safety check on their site following the bomb blast in Yola, Adamawa state yesterday.

Facebook came under fire for a perceived Western bias when it activated Safety Check after the Paris attacks, with critics noting that terrorist attacks in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia hadn’t previously warranted its deployment. The safety check enables Facebook users announce that they are still alive after a mishap in any troubled zone. See What he wrote below…

Why Facebook Activated Its Safety Check Feature For Only Paris Attack

Safety Check isn’t a new feature for Facebook. In fact, Mark Zuckerberg introduced it to the social platform over a year ago. However, it wasn’t until the Paris attacks on Friday night that many started noticing an unfamiliar notification confirming the safety status of their friends located in the area: “[Friend’s Name] was marked safe during Paris Terror Attacks.”

The tool allows users to check in on friends during a disaster or crisis. Facebook describes it as “a simple and easy way to say you’re safe and check on others.” Which was a welcome relief for those with friends and loved ones in or around Paris during the tragic attacks that took at least 129 lives and left 352 injured. According to The Huffington Post, as of last night 4.1 million people had checked in as safe using the feature in the 24 hours since it launched.

Man Escapes From Jail, Posts Pictures On Facebook & Gets Re-arrested

An Idaho man that authorities say escaped the Payette County jail by scaling a razor-wire fence and then taunted authorities on social media has been captured in Mexico. The U.S. Marshal’s Service says 38-year-old Nicholas Grove was recently arrested in Tulum, Mexico, and on Friday was turned over to U.S. authorities.
‘Social media certainly played a role originally because this certain individual bragged about his escape on Facebook,’ Brian Underwood, with the U.S. Marshal Service, said.
Police had been monitoring Grove’s Facebook posts that included selfies and various shots around Cancun, Mexico.
Authorities say a surveillance camera shows Grove on August 26, 2014, climbing the fence with razor wire and runnng away.
Grove had been jailed for several weeks and faced charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, possession of burglary tools and an invalid license.

‘He caused us some grief and we’re glad to see that he’s off the streets and hopefully he’ll get his day in court in Payette County,’ Payette County Sheriff Chad Huff said.

Improvements have been at the jail to make escapes more difficult, Huff said.

‘We believe our safety and security of the jail has increased and is much better,’ he said.

Underwood declined to say where Grove is being held. It’s not clear if Grove plans to fight extradition, which could delay his return to Idaho.

Facebook “Like” On Photo Gets Man Sacked Via SMS…

A man has been sacked from the job he held for over four years after he clicked the ‘like’ button on a Facebook picture.
Troy Garrod, 27, was relaxing at home when he noticed a colleague had uploaded photo of a jumper with five wolves printed on the back.
Along with over 70 other people he ‘liked’ the bizarre picture and thought nothing more of it.
But just days later he received a text informing him that he had been sacked from his job at the UK’s leading book wholesaler.
Troy said:

“I didn’t know what the photo meant but everyone else who worked there was liking it so I just joined in. When I received the text saying I’d been sacked I couldn’t believe it.“I felt really hurt and angry and all my former colleagues think what happened is ridiculous.“Being sacked by text and email is not right after four-and-a-half years of hard work.“I put my heart and soul into that company and enjoyed going into work every day.“It just seems so unfair that clicking the ‘like’ button has caused me so much trouble.”

Troy, who started working for Bertrams Books in 2011, spotted the Facebook picture on October 20.
It had been uploaded by a female colleague – who we are not naming – with the caption: “OMG I’m f**king crying…. I’m sure there’s a wolf fleece appreciation page pahahaha”.

The picture, taken inside one of the company’s warehouses, was ‘liked’ by scores of people. Three days after it was uploaded Troy received a text out of the blue informing him that he had been sacked.
He was told he “bullied” the jumper’s owner by ‘liking’ the “inappropriate” photograph.

Troy, who did not even know the identity of the fleece wearer, added:

“Over 70 people had liked the picture, so I just joined in thinking it was banter.
“Sadly I think people being sacked like this will become much more common.
“When people go on their Facebook timeline they don’t view it professionally, you think it’s just your social time.“I want to warn people to keep work and social divided on Facebook – be careful about befriending colleagues.”

Man Who Allegedly Killed His Wife Posted Pictures Of Her Dead Body On Facebook

A man who killed his wife and posted a photo of her corpse on Facebook shot her in self-defense because he lived in fear of her drug abuse, violent tendencies, and even Satan worship, the man’s attorney said Monday.

Defense attorney Saam Zangeneh said Monday that he will seek to introduce evidence that 27-year-old Jennifer Alfonso was an avid user of synthetic drugs such as ecstasy, that she battered her husband, and that she was deeply involved in the occult and Satan worship.

Jury selection begins Tuesday for Derek Medina, 33, who faces life in prison if convicted of the August 2013 slaying at the couple’s South Miami home. Medina has been jailed since his arrest.

The case gained national attention because Medina posted the photo of Alfonso’s body on Facebook, admitting in the post that he killed her and would likely go to prison. In later interviews with police, however, he said it was self-defense.

Lesbian Couple Looking For Sperm Donor On Facebook, He Must Be Black, See Their Long Requirement List

Ashleigh Habgood and Alley Williams have been best friends since they were 15 and were finally married last year. The Auckland, New Zealand, newlyweds are exactly where they want to be — except they don’t have the baby they so desperately want and there is a major shortage of sperm donors in New Zealand. The couple took to Facebook on Oct. 24 to post an “advertisement” for a sperm donor.

See their requirement list:

We are looking for sperm with the following factors:

1. A kind heart.
2. Intelligence (though this can be measured in a myriad of ways… i.e. if you don’t know what myriad means, that doesn’t mean you’re not intelligent.)
3. You don’t want to be a dad. You just want to be a cool dude that helped us out. Though these details can be discussed. And yes, the baby would know who you are… “The kind man who gave us some sperm.” NOT “Daddy.”
4. You have a clear medical history. Ideally no diabetes, heart conditions or other genetic conditions. No HIV either please:)
5. You are taller than us. Not hard, but we’re already stunted enough.
6. You are 45 or younger. Sorry…. after 45, the risks of Autism, Schizophrenia and Dwarfism increase. And, as I mentioned, we’re already hobbits!

Optional extras:

1. You are not white. We’re not racist, just would love a mixed bub. …. But really, come one, come all…. We think you’re all beautiful. Any ethnicity is amazing.
2. You’re athletic.
3. You’re creative.
4. You’re curious.
5. You’re successful in your field. (That has nothing to do with $$)

Dream world extras

1. You’re an All Black.
2. You’re an amazing lover. (But no, we don’t want to have sex with you….. we just want to bring more amazing lovers into this world.)
3. You own a sweet kids clothing label that can kit out our bub 24/7.

Aunt Creates A Fake Facebook Profile To Check On Her Niece And Ultimately Saves Her Own Life

An Alabama aunt thought her 19-year-old niece was spending too much time on Facebook recently, so she created a fake profile and befriended her to see what she was up to online. But as AL.com reports, the answer she got was more troubling than anything she could have imagined.
The niece is Marissa Williams. Williams’ aunt was puzzled by the constant stream of strangers always at her house, so she created a profile posing as a boy named Tre ‘Topdog’ Ellis and befriended her niece and that may have ultimately saved her life.
On the first day the two talked online, Williams invited Ellis over to her house to get drunk with her. She sent the fictitious boy her phone number and home address, and said she would have sex with him if he agreed to pay her $50 cell phone bill. As troubling as that is, things were about to take a much darker turn.

Just a few days later, Williams told Ellis that she hated her family and wanted to get out of Alabama. She asked Ellis to come kidnap her and said he should shoot her aunt if she tried to stop him.

As time went on, the conversations grew increasingly unnerving. Williams told Ellis, who to her was a strange man she had never met, how to break into her aunt’s room so he could kill her aunt and her aunt’s fiancée. Williams asked Ellis if he could leave his car parked outside during the break-in so she could pack her belongings into it while he killed her entire family.

After hearing the plan, Williams’ aunt decided she’d had enough and called the Sheriff’s Department. Williams admitted to the plan, but says she did not actually mean for anyone to be killed. Nevertheless, she was arrested and charged with the solicitation of murder. She is being held on $30,000 bond.

Mom Jailed For Checking Facebook While Her 2-Year-Old Son Drowned

Claire Barnett, a 31-year-old mom from East Yorkshire, England, was sent to jail this weekend 14 months after her 2-year-old son Joshua drowned in a pond. According to the BBC, the court reported Barnett was on Facebook and talking to her boyfriend while Joshua was drowning.

Barnett pleaded guilty to four charges of child neglect and will be in jail for the next five years. Police originally heard different stories from Barnett about what she’d been doing while Joshua was in the pond, but investigators confirmed from the time stamps on her phone she’d uploaded two photos to Facebook and taken a call from her boyfriend when Joshua was drowning.

The Yorkshire Post reports Barnett’s family allegedly warned her about the dangers of having an uncovered pond in her yard with such a young child, but Barnett never covered it.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children contacted Barnett in 2013 when neighbors saw Joshua almost get hit by a car because Barnett let him play in the streets. The Yorkshire Post also reports Judge Jeremy Richardson called Barnett an “awful parent” in court and said she posed “very serious risks to any child to whom [she] might have responsibility.”

According to The Guardian, Barnett dragged Joshua out of the water when she noticed him drowning, attempted to resuscitate him, and called the police for help, but Joshua died in the hospital later that day. He was days away from his third birthday.

Meet the Blogger Who Earns N3m Per Instagram Picture

A personal style blogger has lifted the lid on the lucrative business of bloggers who are paid big bucks by brands to feature certain products, or even phrases, on their Instagram accounts.

Danielle Bernstein, 22, runs the blog We Wore What, and has 992,000 followers on her Instagram.
Currently, her rate card sets the cost of a single piece of sponsored content from $5,000 to $15,000, but she explained to Harper’s Bazaar that this rate can go up or down depending on the number of posts a brand requires, and length of her relationship with the company in question.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; according to Miss Bernstein, when she hits one million

followers, she will be able to charge ‘a good amount more’ for sponsored content.

Indeed, Miss Bernstein is edging towards the top of the new Instagram economy, through which savvy social media stars are translating an ever-increasing tally of followers into a lucrative business, which – if their accounts are considered as ‘bankable’ as Miss Bernstein’s – could earn them millions of dollars a year.

Miss Bernstein explains that the range for Instagram accounts with a few hundred thousand followers is from around $500 to $5,000 per post, but accounts with upwards of six million followers can earn anywhere between $20,000 and $100,000 a shot.

Industry estimates say brands spend more than a $1 billion per year on sponsored Instagram posts, and that figure shows no signs of decreasing any time soon.

The PDP, through its verified Twitter handle @PdpNigeria, had said on Sunday that it was taking responsibility for the country’s low points during the party’s 16-year reign. But Olisa Metuh, PDP spokesman on Monday said the statement did not represent the position of the party, adding that its Twitter account was hacked. “The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) observed that in the course of the 2015 campaigns, personal positions and opinions of our party members were generally reported in many instances by the media as official positions of the PDP,” he said. “We have also noted that some of our new media handles, our Facebook and Twitter accounts, have been hacked, resulting in series of unauthorized releases, with the latest being Sunday’s post quoting our party as accepting responsibility for failure in the last 16 years; a statement which could not have come from the PDP that has a robust record of achievements in all sectors of our national life within the period. “However, now that the campaigns are over, we wish to notify the general public, especially the media, that henceforth only statements, utterances and positions of the national chairman and the national publicity secretary or any other national officer of the party authorized by the national working committee shall be regarded and reported as the official position of our great party in line with the relevant provisions of the PDP constitution. “For purposes of clarity, this directive does not in anyway affect the inalienable constitutionally guaranteed rights of our members as free citizens to hold and air opinions but such personal opinion must not in anyway be rendered or reported as the official position of the PDP. “Consequently, media houses, particularly the electronic media and the civil society, should note that only authorized persons should be invited to speak or stand in for the PDP for interviews, debates, talk shows or any other media appearance whatsoever. “Furthermore, to halt the embarrassing trend in our social media handles, the party has decided to decommission our official Twitter and Facebook accounts for now, to pave way for proper overhauling of the system. “The foregoing is pursuant to our determination to rebuild and re-position our great party, instill discipline in our fold, check unnecessary divergences and put the PDP on a strong footing to regain power in 2019.” PDP added that in the new spirit of rebuilding and re-positioning, the national leadership charges all aggrieved members to channel their grievances through the appropriate organs of the PDP for redress using the internal conflict resolution mechanisms that abound in our party. “Finally, we urge the media to always crosscheck with the relevant officials of our party on official matters before going to press,” it added.

Man Arrested After Commenting on his Own Wanted Photo on Facebook

An Ohio man was arrested after he commented on his own wanted photo posted on a sheriff’s department’s Facebook page.

Andrew Dale Marcum, 21, was wanted on numerous outstanding warrants, including an abduction and domestic violence charge stemming from a January incident involving the mother of his child, according to Hamilton police. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office, which serves warrants, took to its Facebook page Monday and highlighted Marcum as its “Featured Warrant of the Week.”

The post included multiple photos of Marcum, a description of the suspect, and a list of his recent alleged crimes, including felony burglary/safe-cracking, felony abduction, and misdemeanor charges of assault, domestic violence and criminal endangering, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Just four hours after the post, Marcum replied, “I ain’t tripping half of them don’t even know me.”

The Sheriff’s Office was quick to reply with a polite, “Andrew Marcum – If you could stop by the Sheriff’s Office, that’d be great.”

Obama Unfriends Netanyahu on Facebook

US President Barack Obama has removed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a Facebook “friend” amid a widening diplomatic rift between the two men, according to the Israeli media.

The already tense personal relationship between Obama and Netanyahu took a turn for the worse after Speaker of the House John Boehner invited the Israeli premier Tuesday to address a joint session of Congress in March.

The move, which is seen as a joint effort to rebuke the Obama administration for diplomacy with Iran, was met with criticism from the White House and Democrats in Congress.

The invitation was extended hours after Obama delivered his sixth State of the Union Address in which he threatened to veto any sanctions legislation authorizing new sanctions against Iran amid nuclear talks.

Florida Woman Arrested For Slapping Grandmother For Ignoring Facebook Friend Request

Florida-woman-arrested-for-slapping-grandmother-after-Facebook-friend-request-denied

A west Florida woman is facing felony assault charges after she allegedly attacked her grandmother for denying a Facebook friend request. UPI reports:

Deputies arrested Rachel Anne Hayes, 27, early Thursday for aggravated battery on an elderly person. According to authorities, Hayes slapped the 72-year-old multiple times at a home in Clearwater, Fla.

WFLA reports the woman was Hayes’ grandmother and that Hayes’ arrest affidavit indicated alcohol was a factor in the assault.

The attack allegedly stemmed from an argument between the two over Hayes’ Facebook moniker. Hayes’ grandmother refused to accept her friend request unless the name was changed, according to authorities.

Hayes initially left the residence but returned, and in the ensuing argument she slapped her grandmother multiple times at the threshold of a door before the elderly woman was able to retreat inside.

Deputies arrived on scene and arrested Hayes, who was released from the Pinellas County jail on $10,000 bond.

Zuckerberg & Wife Donate $25M to CDC for Ebola

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are donating $25 million to the CDC Foundation to help address the Ebola epidemic. The money will be used by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Ebola response effort in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and elsewhere in the world where Ebola is a threat, the foundation said Tuesday.

The grant follows a $9 million donation made by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen last month. Zuckerberg and Chan are making the grant from their fund at the nonprofit Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

“We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn’t spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday. “We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome.”

“The most important step we can take is to stop Ebola at its source. The sooner the world comes together to help West Africa, the safer we all will be,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden in a statement.
