OPINION: Stop The Pornography Called Entertainment – By Awojobi Adedayo

I am seriously perturbed by the endemic sort of contents I encounter on social media daily, and the unsurprising silence of the wasted generation towards it. The explicit culture of the western civilisation has manifested itself enough in our way of life and any further assimilation of it spells doom not only for Nigeria but the totality of Africa. Hardly can one scroll through the internet without coming across pornography in its variety on different media.
This includes all of the over fifty thousand blogs and news websites that sprang up between 2012 and 2016, the more relevant ones like Nairaland, Linda Ikeji, Naij, GQ234.com and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Let me not even mention Snapchat – A platform that was built on the idea of an abhorrent portmanteau: Sexting.
The millions of Africans, with majority of them youths purposed to raise us from the socio-economic underdevelopment that we are currently plunged in as a result of the melange of actions and inactions of the older generation are fazed with copying the discouraging lifestyle of western “celebrities” on various mass media inclusive of print, radio and television.
I don’t see any value or useful knowledge to be gained from following someone who got famous through a sex tape, got married after series of failed relationships and still poses nude on different media every day.  If there is no such benefit from this sort of information, then there is no cause for its incessant promotion.
Simply put, we have no use for posts containing Kylie Jenner’s photos in a bikini or Kim Kardashian twerking or Black Chyna posing nude on a magazine. It is this sort of content that informs the actions of people like Maheedah or do you think it is unconnected with the aberrant behaviour of Bobrisky. Then you can imagine the amount of twerk videos and such other explicit content posted online by Africans daily. Even a priori, your assumption is valid.
There is also the swift wave of Lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender movements – Another one of the countless innovations from the west yet to see its full manifestation in Africa.
Unfortunately, we can only write articles; Action lies in the hands of our fathers at the top towards curtailing this trend. Acting as fuel again to this fire still in its early stages is the media. A clarification before I get burned by gay rights activists, I have a problem with you being gay doesn’t mean I won’t talk to you if you are gay. I only fear for the up and coming generations because God blessed Africans with not just abundant human and natural resources but a practical mind which manifested in our pre-colonial traditions.
The way we practice western religion and admit western preferences sufficiently buttresses this point. Nothing is really African anymore and I confess I have imagined myself being gay before. But what effect will such imaginations have on the brain of the young African watching DSTV or visiting social media. I remember doing the childish turn of Daddy and Mummy after seeing the actions of Daddy and Mummy.
I definitely don’t want my sister in her pursuit of current events in the world coming across transgender and lesbian news online and imagining it. I would prefer she reads about the Tesla and thinking of inventing a better version. I therefore implore Linda Ikeji and Co. to stop broadcasting news of gay and transgender celebrities having ‘fun’.
Some even go as far as searching for and exposing this transgender models on Instagram as their former selves. Let us leave this people be and focus on more important issues to initiate much needed and rather evasive development. We should stop being colonised with the colonial mentality of following every act from the west. Especially since it is in our African nature to copy and take things to the extreme. A good example is the business orientation that religion has taken in Africa, an innovation of the west or the non-particular importance that Africans attach to titular authority. Let me not mention the over a thousand Ponzi schemes initiated since MMM.
I appeal we stop giving prostitutes with big buttocks attention. Let us ignore Bisi Alimi and his gay rants. The Anti-gay law should be enforced in all ramifications to avoid the extreme manifestation of the course in the near future. Efforts should also be made to curtail the spread of this abominable contents online and through media.
In a bid to influence of our sacrosanct culture, the westerners have employed a tactic which I called COVERT INFLUENCE. Covert influence is an inconspicuous tool for propaganda. A skill mastered by the United States of America, it was well played in the campaign for Hilary Clinton where most fictional movies released from 2016 till the election used a female as the American President even the disappointing Independent Day 2. If that failed to achieve its purpose, what of the epic series 24 and the Obama Administration. This cromulent act has continued with most foreign movies and series containing gay relationship of some sorts like The Empire Series and How to get away with murder topping the list.
The kind of music we hear and videos aired on the television are not helpful either. TV giants like Trace Urban, MTV and Sound City can put a limit to this contents. Reality programmes like Big Brother Africa, Big Brother Nigeria, keeping up with the kardashians, to mention but a few should be banned to provide ample time for productive and educative programmes. Corporate companies should sponsor these educational and entrepreneurial programmes.
How much I gained from MTN’s who want to be a millionaire.
The way it is the talk of the whole secondary school the following Monday and how we anticipate it.
I implore the Nigerian government to take a stand against the further penetration of these western values like China did by disabling the media from its further advertisement and perhaps consequently Africa can take a united stand against it.
I assert my point with reference to the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s Song “Colonial Mentality” and a famed quote of is, “A man without no knowledge of where he has been, knows not where he is or where he is going. Hence, there is need for an assemblage of African intellectuals for the total reorganisation of Africa according to African norm. If it is not African, cannot help the average African then it should not be in Africa.

We’ll use entertainment to increase Lagos GDP – Ambode

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday revealed the plans of his administration to leverage on the vast economic opportunities in entertainment, tourism and arts sectors, among others to grow the Gross Domestic Product, GDP, of the state and promote talents in the state to compete globally.

Speaking at Lagos House, Ikeja when he received artistes who performed at the One Lagos Fiesta, OLF, who were on a thank-you-visit, Governor Ambode said the creative industry remained a veritable platform to grow the economy, and that government would tap into it and use it to positively engage the bulging youths in the State.

The OLF, which is an annual end of the year event put together by the state government, held simultaneously in five different locations across the state from December 24, 2016 to January 1, 2017, and was adjudged to be very successful with participation of a-list artistes from different genres of music.

The governor, who thanked the artistes for their partnership with the state government, said the OLF was a platform put together by his administration to majorly create awareness about the potentials inherent in the entertainment industry, especially in using it to grow the economy and positively develop talents that abound in the country.

He said according to statistics, the state recorded the lowest crime rate during the period of the OLF, saying that the artists contributed significantly in keeping the city secured and scale up the international rating of the state as a safe place.

He recalled the Project T.H.E.S.E (Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment, Sports for Excellence) which was part of campaign promises to Lagosians, saying that his administration remained committed to using the initiative as well as the OLF to grow the economy of the State.

He said: “We have a bulging youth population dynamics in Lagos. 66 per cent of our population are below the age of 35 and if two third are of below 35, it means there is an economy in that age bracket that government is not seeing. The OLF was used to test run how to bring people together.

“The issue now is beyond OLF, how do we now take that opportunity to become a catalyst for this partnership? On my part, I want to reiterate my commitment. This is an area I love which is underutilised for the societal development of the country.

“Government is now willing to use your industry to grow its GDP because so far entertainers are working, we would have more visitors coming to Lagos; they will stay in our hotels; they will buy clothes; they will go out in the night and buy our drinks and the ultimate thing is that more taxes come in for the state.

“So, there is a concentric cycle around the energy of entertainers and so what I want is a structured framework. What is it that we should do as government to grow the industry? Why should we go and be doing video shoot in South Africa for instance? I want a win-win partnership not just to use artistes and dump them till another December. I want a year-round partnership that is built around a framework,” he said.

Going forward, Governor Ambode tasked artistes to come up with a structured framework to grow the economy, while government will provide infrastructure and initiatives to help the sector.

“The challenge for our artistes now is to come up with a framework of how government can intervene. We are willing to support and we are willing to draw up a programme to support you but how do you want to fuse into that to make Lagos the entertainment hub in Africa? That is the challenge but I want to thank you for honouring us,” the Governor said.

Many of the big names in the entertainment industry including Queen Salawa Abeni, Adewale Ayuba, Tiwa Savage, Adekunle Gold, Sir Shina Peters, Sound Sultan among others, lauded Governor Ambode for the OLF initiative and his commitment to grow the industry.

Other notable names who were part of the delegation included Folarin Falana (Falz), M.I Abaga, Patoranking, Obesere, Tony Tetuila, Dr Sid, Idris Abdulkareem, Aramide, CDQ, Sulaimon ‘Atawewe’ Adio, Reekado Banks, Humblesmith, Dammy Krane among others.

“Sycophants make it hard for entertainers to remain humble” – DJ Jimmy Jatt

A lot of Nigerian entertainers are surrounded by sycophants, hence their lack of humility, says Jimmy Jatt, renowned disc-jockey.

The veteran DJ made the assertion while speaking on The Gist with Emma Ugolee, a show which aired on Hip TV over the weekend.

Ugolee, host of the show asked guests, Ayo Makun and Jimmy Jatt, to weigh in on the effects of fame on entertainers.

He asked: “Why do artistes change and forget everything they learn when they get fame and money, considering that most are from humble backgrounds?”

Jimmy Jatt responded by saying the entertainment industry is structured such that a newcomer can expect to get the top overnight.

He said: “They are surrounded by sycophants that tell them that they are more than what they are. If you have people that will always hold you down and keep you grounded, you won’t get to that point.

“In school, you have to pass exams to move to the next class. In entertainment, people pray to get in, and when they do, they are praying to have a PhD almost immediately.”

The disc jockey further added that entertainers can remain level-headed if they “understand” that there’s always another challenge after every accomplishment.

“You need to understand that whatever level you have gotten to, there are more levels to go. You can’t be bigger than all your fans,” he added.

Trump Says he Insulted Women ‘for The Purpose of Entertainment’

Donald Trump says many of his comments disparaging women were made “for the purpose of entertainment.”

Trump was asked in a Wednesday interview with News 3 Las Vegas if he could understand why parents of young girls are concerned about his history of making crude comments toward women.

“A lot of that was done for the purpose of entertainment, there’s nobody that has more respect for women than I do,” the real estate mogul responded.

“Are you trying to tone it down now?” Jim Snyder, the News 3 interviewer, asked.

“It’s not a question of trying, it’s very easy,” Trump said.

Democrats have locked on Trump’s behavior toward women in recent weeks.

During the first presidential debate, Hillary Clinton attacked Trump for his comments about a former Miss Universe, whom the businessman had attacked for gaining weight in 1996.

The issue stayed in the headlines for days as Trump renewed his criticisms of the woman’s weight gain from two decades ago.

Kemi Adetiba Speaks On Her Near Death Fibroid Experience

Nigerian music video director, and filmmaker Kemi Adetiba has opened up on her best kept secret. She battled fibroid for long. According to Kemi she wasn’t strong enough to talk about it, but now that she is healed she feels she owes it to women on how she got over it. Kemi only spoke about her ‘illness’ for the first time in a recent interview and a lot of ladies have been asking her questions on how she got over it. Kemi hasn’t really explained how she did, but she spoke a little about the journey below.

I battled with an extreme case of Fibroids in secret for many years. When I say extreme, I mean EXTREME. From being rushed to the ER where the intense PAIN wouldn’t even allow me cry, to being dangerously close to death because of anaemia, to the physical changes, the mental and emotional roller coaster it takes not only YOU, but your loved ones privy to the information.

I alluded to my battle in a recent interview while speaking on something else, and since then I have had an avalanche of msgs from every avenue possible. Women going through the same thing needing more information. How I handled it. It’s amazing how many women live with this everyday yet have NO information on how to get better, or manage the symptoms pending surgery. Even with all the resources available to me, it was difficult making the right choices.

I had one doctor in NY tell me that I would have to take out my ENTIRE womb, that my case was THAT bad. Smh. I was like Errrrmmm I haven’t had kids yet. I got a nonchalant “sorry” and a Kanye-shrug. Things I endured Ehn??? SMH Thank God I found a doctor who thought that was rubbish… And he was Nigerian… In Nigeria!! It’s definitely something I would love to speak about, hoping that it helps someone out there. I won’t talk about anything other than MY experience. It’s been 6 months since I had the surgery. Even post surgery is another whahala, but I’m fully healed now and it’s like I have a new lease on life!! As you can probably tell from my instagram ?? I kept quiet about it initially as it was a very personal experience that forced me into an extremely fragile mental and emotional space.

I wasn’t ready for it to be public. Now that I am healed (by God’s Grace ) I would love to share my story hoping that it would help someone. Maybe a blog, or a video, or Twitter session… Not sure yet, but I will do it for you guys. Thanks for all the messages and questions. Keep them coming. I’ll try to answer all I can, and know you are not alone.
