Read Fayose’s Opinion Concerning Sheriff’s Emergence As PDP Chairman

The Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has hailed the emergence of a former governor of Borno State, Ali Sheriff, as the national chairman of the PDP, calling on all members and supporters of the party to support the new chairman.

Mr. Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said the choice of Mr. Sheriff was in the best interest of the party.

“I have always defended the party even at the risk of my position, personal security and comfort.

“I have always stood for the truth, and I cannot now be part of any decision that won’t represent the party well.

“I supported the processes that led to the emergence of Ali Modu Sheriff because I believe in him and for those who may be aggrieved for one reason or the other; I plead that they should sheath their sword in the overall interest of our party.

“Most importantly, the reality that we must all face is that we are in a peculiar situation and such a situation deserves a peculiar approach.

“What the party leaders have done therefore is to tackle the present situation in our party with the most appropriate solution and we must all stand by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who is our present solution to our present situation…”

Jonathan’s Loyalists Threaten To Dump PDP Because Of Sheriff’s Emergence

Some ministers, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, have threatened to leave the Peoples Democratic Party if Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff is not removed as the national chairman of the party.

They said “imposing” the former governor of Borno State on the party by some of its influential members was meant to portray the party as unserious.

They added that the plan to reposition the former ruling party ahead of the 2019 general elections had failed with Sheriff’s emergence.

Spokesperson for the former ministers and a former Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Suleiman, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday.

Sheriff was selected by the members of the party’s National Executive Committee at their meeting, which was held in Abuja on Tuesday.

His selection has attracted divergent views from members of the party, including its many organs.

For example, the Board of Trustees of the party and its Senate Caucus have kicked against Sheriff’s choice.

In his reaction, Suleiman said it was obvious that the plan to rescue the party had failed.

He said, “Our rescue mission has failed; the redemption boat has capsized and our journey to recovery has come to an end.

“Whosoever partook in the decision does not mean well for the party and democracy in Nigeria.

“It is obvious that the fifth columnist has hijacked the party and they are hell-bent on sinking it deeper into irrecoverable level of the pit.

The ex-minister added, “Some of us would rather review our membership than subject ourselves to selfish interests of some cabal whose main goal is political profiteering. After all, our umbilical cord is not tied to any party.”

Asked if his group was planning to move to either the All Progressives Congress or form another political party, Suleiman said the decision would be taken soon.

“Some people will go to the APC while some will form their own political party if they so desire.

“Sheriff’s emergence is a setback for the party trying to build its image. Credible members and younger ones are going to leave the party.

“If his emergence is not reversed in the next one week, there could be massive exodus from the party.”

Suleiman said though the former governor had not been identified with Boko Haram, he argued that the perception of many people about him on the Boko Haram issue ought to have been considered.

APC Accepts Gbajabiamila’s Emergence; Still Indifferent On Saraki, Ekweremadu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, has expressed “relative satisfaction” with the choice of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives.

He, however, expressed indifference to the vote of confidence passed on the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, and other principal officers of the upper legislative chamber.

Mr. Gbajabiamila on Thursday emerged the House Leader. He had on June 9 contested the Speaker position but narrowly lost to Yakubu Dogara despite being the party’s choice for the seat.

The House however became factionalised with some queuing behind Mr. Gbajabiamila and others belonging to the Speaker’s group.

Though he initially pledged not to interfere in the choice of the leaders of the National Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday summoned the APC House members to a meeting in Aso Rock during which he gave them a marching order to resolve the lingering crisis in the lower chamber.

The president also directed the contending factions to meet with Mr. Odigie-Oyegun with a view to resolving the crisis.

Oil Barons Didn’t Influence My Emergence- Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has denied reports that Nigerians associated with dubious claims in the infamous oil subsidy influenced his election as President of the eighth Senate.

According to his media office, the Senate President said such reports were wrong and mischievous.

He further denounced such rumours as false, untrue and calculated mischief. “Again, the attention of the Senate President Bukola Saraki has been drawn to a malicious, false and totally reprehensible news report, wherein it insinuated that the election of Dr. Bukola Saraki as the Senate President of the 8th Senate was facilitated by Nigerians associated with dubious claims in the infamous oil subsidy,” his publicist stated.

“The news report went further to give a negative and dirty impression that the emergence of the President of the 8th Senate is aimed to sabotage the anti corruption posture of President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government as well as sabotage the ‘Change agenda’ of the All Progressive Congress (APC).”

Saraki’s office said such attempts to justify this blackmail and others was the story credited to former Interim National Chairman of APC, Bisi Akande, published in some newspapers on Monday.

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the report, but for the sole reason that some undiscerning readers might mistake the fiction for the facts.

“We also wish to state unequivocally that it was wrong and mischievous for the statement by Chief Akande to link what happened on the floor of both chambers to some unnamed oil barons. We dare say that the entire story was the figment of the imagination of the author.”

Saraki pledged Senate under him as the President would give all necessary legislative support to the administration to fight and reduce corruption.

“Senator Bukola Saraki is determined and focused to achieve the Senate targeted legislative agenda and he is committed to support President Buhari to deliver on his promises to the people of Nigeria.”

Saraki was earlier this month elected unopposed as President of the Senate by an across the party alliance comprising People’s Democratic Party and APC Senators. Saraki had faced stiff opposition from Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan who was a preferred candidate by a group of senators-elect within the APC.

Fresh Crisis In PDP Over Mimiko’s Emergence As Gov Forum Chairman

Strong indications have emerged that crisis looms in the family of Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over the emergence of governor Olusegun Mimiko as Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, PDPGF, the umbrella body of the governors.

Olusegun Mimiko emerged the Chairman of PDPGF last week and vowed to engage President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC in very constructive manner.

Governor Mimiko was elected Chairman of the Forum at the meeting, which was slated for 7pm last week Tuesday night and did not start until about 9pm, but came to a close at 12am last week Wednesday morning. The Ondo State governor replaced former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio who was the first to occupy the position following the formation of the forum.

It was gathered yesterday that some PDP members were already kicking against the choice of Mimiko as the the Chairman of the Forum and as a way of protest, have also written a petition to the National Working Committee, NWC of the party to as a matter of urgency wade into the looming problem before it blows into an uncontrollable situation.

Six Governors and two Deputies who represented their governors were at the meeting, when he was elected, while governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State was conspicuously absent.

Buhari’s Cabinet List May Be Altered Due To Saraki, Dogara’s Emergence- Report

The emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate and Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the House of Representatives may have altered the cabinet consideration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, is from North-Central while Dogara hails from Bauchi, North-East. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is from the South-East while the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yusuf Lasun, hails from the South-West.

All these officers, except Ekweremadu, are members of the ruling APC. The deputy senate president is the only member of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party.

President Buhari was said to be waiting for the outcome of the election before making announcement on key appointments in his government.

Apart from the ministers, he was said to be waiting for the election of principal officers of the National Assembly before naming his Secretary to the Government of the Federation, his Chief of Staff and Special Advisers.

Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja indicated that the position of the SGF hitherto reserved for the South-East may now go to another zone because of the emergence of Ekweremadu.

In anticipation that the position would go to the zone, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State was said to have submitted three names to the President.

Those on his list are a former Governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige; a former Governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and Prof. Anthony Anwuka.

It was gathered that in the negotiation that brought Saraki to power, the zone agreed to rather go for the position of the deputy senate president instead of the SGF.

The presidential source said, “President Buhari is seriously tinkering with the original list he has for political offices. This is because the emergence of the officers of the National Assembly has affected the original list he has.

“Though he was expecting some elements of surprise in the election, but I think he never bargained for a total disregard to party directive in the election of the officers.”

Saraki, Dogara Emergence Unacceptable- APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as totally unacceptable and the highest level of indiscipline and treachery the conduct of Tuesday’s inauguration of the National Assembly that led to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara as Senate President.and Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.

”Senator Bukola and Hon. Dogara are not the candidates of the APC and a majority of its National Assembly members-elect for the positions of Senate President and House Speaker.

The party duly met and conducted a straw poll and clear candidates emerged for the posts of Senate President, Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, supported by a majority of all Senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives.

All National Assembly members-elect who emerged on the platform of the party are bound by that decision. The party is supreme and its interest is superior to that of its individual members,” the party said in a statement issued in Abuja Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

”Consequently, the APC leadership is meeting in a bid to reestablish discipline in the party and to mete out the necessary sanctions to all those involved in what is nothing but a monumental act of indiscipline and betrayal to subject the party to ridicule and create obstacles for the new administration ” it said.

APC decried a situation in which some people, based on nothing but inordinate ambition and lack of discipline and loyalty, will enter into an unholy alliance with the very same people whom the party and indeed the entire country worked hard to replace and sell out the hard won victory of the Party.

”There can be no higher level of treachery, disloyalty and insincerity within any party,” the party said, vowing to resolve the matter using all constitutional and legal means available to it. Meanwhile, the APC has asked all its loyal Senators-elect to please report to the Senate to be sworn-in in order to discharge their constitutional duties. Buhari Backs APC, But Says Saraki, Dogara’s Emergence Is “Constitutional”

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the election of new leaders of the National Assembly, saying he supports those elected, yet he wished the party’s choices were respected.

The Senate on Tuesday elected Bukola Saraki as its president, defying the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which had presented Ahmed Lawan as its preferred candidate.

In the same vein, the House of Representatives elected Yakubu Dogara, against the wish of the party for Femi Gbajabiamila to be elected speaker.

The APC has rejected the elections and has vowed to sanction members who disobeyed its directives.

In a somewhat ambiguous response, Mr. Buhari merely said he “noted the outcome of the just-concluded election of leaders of the National Assembly”.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Femi Adesina, said the president would rather that the process of electing the leaders as initiated and concluded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been followed.

Nonetheless, the president took the view that a constitutional process has somewhat occurred, the statement said.

“President Buhari had said in an earlier statement that he did not have any preferred candidate for the Senate and the House of Representatives, and that he was willing to work with whoever the lawmakers elected,” the statement said.

“That sentiment still stands. Though he would have preferred the new leaders to have emerged through the process established by the party”.

The statement said the stability of our constitutional order and overall interest of the common man were uppermost on the president’s mind, as far as the National Assembly elections were concerned.

The president called on all the elected representatives of the people to focus on the enormous task of bringing enduring positive change to the lives of Nigerians.
