Protest Turns Violent During Obama’s Visit To Greece

Six people have been arrested in the Greek capital after a group of anarchists started throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails following an anti-capitalism protest, Athens police told CNN.

The trouble came as Barack Obama visits Athens on his final state tour as President of the United States. He gave a speech Wednesday after touring the Acropolis, the complex of monuments known as the “cradle of democracy,” in which he said democracy was “complicated” and “messy” but designed to correct mistakes.
The arrests occurred Tuesday after a peaceful demonstration, organized by the Communist Party and permitted by police, in Omonia Square near central Athens.
About 5,000 people attended the anti-establishment protest, police said. After it was over, a group of some 100 to 150 anarchists became violent, police said.
Unrest broke out as the group tried to break through a police cordon to march to the US Embassy and Presidential Mansion, where Obama was attending an official state dinner.
Protesters threw Molotov cocktails, and police responded with stun grenades and tear gas, dispersing the crowds who eventually retreated into the side streets.
Three officers suffered minor injuries, police said.

Clinton Accuses Trump Of ‘Stalking’ Her During Debate

Hillary Clinton has accused her Republican presidential rival Donald Trump of “stalking” her during their televised debate on Sunday.

Trump often stood closely behind the Democratic nominee glowering as she answered questions from the audience during the town hall-style event in St. Louis.

Speaking during an interview on NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show set to air Friday, Clinton said his movements made her feel “really weird” on stage.

“Because of the revelation of the public video, and everything that came out on ‘Access Hollywood,’ you know, he was really all wrought up, and you could just sense how much anger he had,” Clinton said, referring to a video leaked last week showing Trump making lewd comments about women.

“And so he was really trying to dominate and then literally stalk me around the stage and I would just feel this presence behind me.”

Trump rejected criticism about his debate performance at a rally on Monday.

“So I’m standing at my podium by my chair. She walks across the room. She’s standing in front of me, right next to me,” he said.

“And the next day I said what did the papers say? They said, ‘he invaded her space.’”

“Believe me,” he added, “The last space that I want to invade is her space.”

Spokesperson for the group, Brig Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, in a statement on its website claimed that the soldiers’ death which has been concealed by top brass of the military was due to negligence, administrative greed and corruption within the military.

Deaf Driver Shot Dead By US Police During Traffic Stop

Authorities in the southern US state of North Carolina said Monday they are investigating the death of a deaf man who was fatally shot after a trooper tried to pull him over for speeding.

Daniel Harris, 29, who used sign language to communicate, led trooper Jermaine Saunders on an eight-mile (13-kilometer) chase on Thursday that started on an interstate highway and ended outside his home in Charlotte, local television station WSOC reported.

The driver exited his vehicle in the neighborhood and an “encounter took place” that led to a shot being fired, North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Michael Baker said in a statement.

The driver died at the scene, Baker said. No weapon was recovered from Harris, the State Bureau of Investigation told WSOC.

Saunders has been placed on administrative leave while investigators review evidence, including dashboard and body camera videos.

A neighbor called the shooting “totally unacceptable.”

“He didn’t even hear the siren, he didn’t hear anything… You’re pulling someone over who is deaf, they are handicapped,” Mark Barringer told WSOC.

Harris’s family has launched an online fundraiser to pay for funeral expenses.

Leftover money “will be used to set up a foundation in his name to educate and provide law enforcement proper training on how to confront Deaf people,” the family’s fundraising page said.

They hoped to change drivers’ registration systems so that a “deaf” alert will show up when police look up a car’s license plate.

“With this change, Daniel will be a hero in our deaf community”.

Two Retirees Slump During Pension Arrears Protest In Benue

Two pensioners of the Benue State Civil Service slumped on Wednesday during a protest staged by retirees under the umbrella of Concerned Benue Pensioners in Makurdi, the state capital.

The retirees staged the protest against the Benue State government over alleged unpaid entitlements and gratuity which spanned 11 months.

The protesting pensioners took to the streets of Makurdi carrying placards with various inscriptions demanding for the immediate payment of their pension arrears.

It was during the protest that two of them allegedly slumped and became unconscious. All efforts to revive the affected retirees proved unsuccessful. They were taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

Some of the inscriptions on the protesters’ placards read: ‘’Gov Ortom fulfill your campaign promises’’, ‘’Do not starve us to death,’’ ‘’Pay us our pension’’, ‘’We are more than 30,000 pensioners and we are dying like chickens everyday’’, “We are unable to buy our drugs’’, “Our children have stopped going to schools” and so on.

The protesters barricaded the popular CBN- Government House Roundabout causing gridlock for several hours while all efforts by security operatives to calm them down and allow free passage of vehicles failed until they finally decided to move themselves to the main Government House.

The protesters were received at the Government House by the Acting Secretary to the Benue State Government, Dr. Bem Meladu, commissioners of finance, education and the Head of Service.

Presenting their protest letter to the SSG for onward delivery to the governor who was said to be out of the state, the Chairman of the Concerned Benue Pensioners, Mr. Peter Ikyado, said the protest would not end if the state government failed to attend to their plight.

He added that his members were tired of “continued failed promises” by the state government on the payment of their pension arrears.

Crocodile Takes Woman During Night Swim

A woman is feared dead after being seized by a crocodile during a night-time swim with a friend at a beach in northern Australia, with reports that she yelled “A croc’s got me!” before disappearing.

The women went for a stroll on Thornton Beach on Sunday evening in the far north of Queensland state before making a fateful decision to take a dip in an area known to be infested with the reptiles.

“The woman was swimming with a female friend, also in her 40s, at 10.30pm when the incident occurred,” police said in a statement.

Nine News cited witnesses as hearing the woman yell “A croc’s got me, a croc’s got me!”

Senior Constable Russell Parker said the women — Australians visiting the area — were in the water when one of them was grabbed, with her friend desperately trying to drag her to safety.

“They decided to take a swim in the ocean just in waist-deep water and at that point, we believe that a crocodile has taken one of the women, taken hold of her,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“Her friend tried valiantly to drag her to the shore but unfortunately wasn’t able to do so and the woman subsequently disappeared.

“Now her friend raised the alarm with a nearby business and they subsequently contacted the police.”

A rescue helicopter was sent up with thermal imaging equipment but was unable to find her. Marine police also failed to do so when the search resumed on Monday.

Parker added that the surviving woman was “very, very shaken and shocked” but appeared to have escaped with only grazes.

“To set the records straight, I had no hands in the outage at the CCT Tribunal. I have no relationship with any staff or technicians at the tribunal which would have made me to influence the outage.

“I also do not work with or own shares in Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to have wielded contacts to disrupt power supply to the tribunal. “I have never met with technicians in charge of the alternative source of power for the tribunal.”

Ameh disclosed that the airline had more passengers during the Christmas period, adding that the airline had only five flights today compared to the 11 flights it operated during Christmas, also there was no fare hike during the season, explaining that the difference in ticket price was as a result of online booking and on the counter booking.

According to him, aside the fact that the economy is not too good at the moment, a lot of people that travelled to different parts of the country for Christmas are yet to return.

We have lesser number of passengers this year compared to last year’s and the previous years, and I believe it is due to the present economic situation in the country.

Like today, there is no fare hike unlike during Christmas when there was high demand for seats because if you are buying ticket over the counter you tend to pay more.

However, detectives in the Ondo State Police command have picked up  the herbalist who allegedly put the deceased in the family way and in a desperate bid to terminate the pregnancy gave her some concoction to drink in order to flush it down . He is currently being quizzed at the Special Investigative Bureau (SIB).

Reports from Police detectives indicated that the  deceased who is now an orphan was the daughter of a herbalist. The suspect, according to findings is an apprentice to the father of the deceased when he was alive. Vanguard gathered that the suspect has been showing interest in the deceased  before her father’s death but was hindered because the late father disapproved of the relationship.

But when the father later died, the suspect walked his way into the heart of the deceased and a relationship ensued and he begin to fend for her. Some years into the relationship, the unexpected reportedly happened  and the suspect reportedly prepared a concoction for his lover to terminate the unwanted pregnancy.

It was gathered that the lovers agreed that they were not ready to be parents hence the option of an abortion. The deceased was said to have taken the concoction and after some days she developed severe abdominal pain. Sensing that trouble was knocking at his door, the suspect was said to have rushed her to a private hospital where the doctor who was recently picked up and quizzed by detectives helped them to evacuate the remnants of the pregnancy.

After the flushing by the doctor in the private hospital, her persistent complaint of abdominal pain made the suspect to relocate her to the State general hospital where she later gave up the ghost. While all these were happening the deceased did not confide in her sister (Funke ). A friend by name Omololu reportedly informed her that the deceased was admitted to the state hospital after which she rushed there to meet her sister in pain.

The deceased according to sources informed her sister that the suspect gave her a concoction to drink and that the pain started since then. The suspect reportedly told Funke that Wunmi was rushed to the hospital when she complained of abdominal pain. He did not disclose to her that he gave her concoction in a bid to terminate her pregnancy.

However, reports had it that the lovers also did not open up for the doctors that attended to her at the State hospital until she gave up the ghost. Vanguard gathered that it was after she died and taken back to Ijare for burial that the cause of her untimely death was exposed.

Some sympathisers informed the deceased’s sister what actually happened before the suspect rushed the deceased to a private hospital where the remnants of the pregnancy were flushed out and was referred to the state hospital where she later died when the pain did not subside.

Funke and other family members reported the matter to the traditional of Ijare- Olujare of Ijare who advised them to lodge a complaint with the Police. The suspect and the medical doctor were later picked up  and detained. Speaking with Vanguard, the sister Funke said that the deceased was the last born of the family.

According to her, “it was a friend called Omololu who informed me that my sister has been admitted in the State specialist hospital and was critically ill. “ I rushed to the hospital to meet my sister in pain complaining of stomach ache. She insisted that the doctors should not give her injection or drips as prescribed.

“While we were in the hospital Wunmi refused to disclose why she was given the concoction. According to her, the deceased later died in the hospital and was buried on Sunday in Ijare. “It was after the burial that people came to me and narrated what really happened to my sister

“I informed the family members and we reported the matter to the Olujare of Ijare who asked us to lodge a formal complaint with the Police. “I was informed that someone gave her concoction to abort the pregnancy but when she complained of abdominal pain, she was rushed to the hospital “I was later informed that  the doctor in the private hospital billed them N25,000 and an initial deposit of N20,000 was paid. It was the doctor that helped them to flush out the remnants of the pregnancy.

“But when the pains persisted I learnt she was rushed to the specialist hospital where she later died. “Funke said the family would want justice to be done and pleaded that the police should not sweep the matter under the carpet. “We will pursue the matter to a logical conclusion and those behind the death of our last born should be made to face the music”, she said.

Contacted, the Police Image Maker Femi Joseph said the suspect is in police custody. Joseph assured that the matter was still under investigation and findings would be made public.

100 Women Die Daily In Northern Nigeria During Childbirth- UNFPA

Ms Ratidzai Ndhlovu, Nigeria Country Director of United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA), says no fewer than 100 women die daily across Northern Nigeria during childbirth.

She spoke on Thursday in Sokoto at a consultative meeting with the theme: “Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal Deaths in Northern Nigeria: The Role of the Traditional and Religious Leaders.”

Ndhlovu decried the high maternal mortality figure, and stressed that collective efforts must be stepped up to redress the ugly trend.

” No pregnant woman should be allowed to die while bringing a life into the world and they should be adequately protected.

” Traditional rulers, community and religious leaders should take census of all pregnant women in their areas, with a view to tracking the exact figure of maternal mortality.

” This would help in gingering all of us to step up measures to reduce the menace and save more pregnant mothers and their children from dying during childbirth.

” This would certainly help in reducing maternal mortality and even help to reduce it to a zero-level across the North,” she said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who spoke called for the building of capacities of more traditional birth attendants in the region.

Abubakar said that the action would complement the efforts of the skilled midwives in health facilities.
He suggested that the traditional birth attendants ” should be recruited by the three tiers of government and deployed to health facilities, to boost manpower provision.’’

See Indian Women’s Shocking Protest Against Temple That Restricts Women Entry During Their Period

Women of menstruating age have never been allowed inside the Sabarimala temple, one of the largest and oldest Hindu pilgrimage centers in India.

Report says the recently appointed board president made it clear that he’s not changing the law any time soon. That is, until the temple has a scanner that literally detects whether or not women are bleeding from their vagina.

” There will be a day when a machine is invented to scan if it is the ‘right time’ (not menstruating) for a woman to enter the temple. When that machine is invented, we will talk about letting women inside,”   Prayar Gopalakrishnan , the new board president, said at a press meeting.

Indian women are understandably outraged at this ridiculous law, so 20-year-old Nikita Azad started a Facebook campaign using #HappyToBleed to protest the temple’s decision.

Pastor Rapes Teenager During Deliverance, Blames Devil

The Nasarawa State Police command on Monday arrested a 46 year-old pastor, Ifeanyi Bernard, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in the Karu Local Government Area of the state.

According to police authorities, the alleged rape took place on November 3 when the pastor was performing deliverance on the teenager.

However, the pastor described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.

While parading the suspect at the Criminal Investigative Department, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Mohammed, said the suspect was apprehended following a report by the father of the victim, Mr. Martins Ijiwo.

According to the police, the cleric, who lives in the Alikima Mararaba area of the state, lured the victim into his house under the pretext of casting out demons from her.

The police boss said the cleric allegedly pushed her to his bed and raped her repeatedly.

The commissioner said the suspect threatened to kill the victim if she reported the incident to any member of her family.

However, when the father of the girl learnt of the incident, he reported the matter to the police. The police subsequently stormed the pastor’s home and arrested him.

Policemen also recovered bottles of anointing oil from the suspect’s home as well as a bedspread.

The CP said, “The pastor took advantage of his closeness to the girl’s family – who are members of his congregation – to rape their 13-year-old daughter under the guise of casting out demons from her.”

While speaking at the police command, the pastor confessed to the crime, adding that he didn’t know what came over him when he committed the crime.

He said, “I had been into evangelism for some years now and I have been casting out demons from people who have spiritual and family problems before I met this young girl through her father, Mr. Martins Ijiwo.

“I have been a friend of the family for quite some time.

“I used my anointing oil to lure her into my room and all of a sudden, I was carried away and before I knew what was happening, I saw myself making love to her.”

New Recommendations Say No Amount Of Alcohol Is Safe During Pregnancy

For anyone who’s ever wondered whether it’s safe for pregnant women to have a sip or two of wine every now and then, the medical gods have spoken: A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says pregnant women should put the glass down, pour the wine out, and cork that bottle until the baby arrives.

The warning goes for beer and liquor drinkers too. If it gives you a buzz, it can harm a fetus, according to the report, which says any amount of booze can contribute to 100 percent preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities that could last for life. If you’re all like, “Who would drink while they’re pregnant?!” here’s some sobering news: A recent survey found that 1 in 10 pregnant women say they imbibe, and a third of that subset binge-drink (i.e., throw back more than four drinks in quick succession). As you might expect, the more you drink, the more damage you can do — but the AAP’s stance is crystal clear: No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. Not a drop!

An AAP statement suggests that drinking during your first and second trimester can raise your baby’s risk of developing fetal alcohol development syndrome by a crazy-high 61 percent — which means the absolute worst time to drink is early in your pregnancy. Because it can take a few weeks to find out you’re pregnant in the first place, the stat is pretty scary — much scarier than the prospect of sticking to water until your water breaks. Which is a pretty small price to pay for a *~pErFeCt~* baby — no matter how many weddings you’ll have to attend sober between conception and your due date.

Buhari’s Aide Narrates How NTA, AIT Humiliated Them During 2015 Presidential Election

President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his gratitude to Nigerians for his victory at the general elections saying he emerged winner against all odds.

Speaking at The Red Media Summit in Lagos, Thursday,? Mr. Buhari that he won the election despite the deployment of state forces against him.

“Muhammadu Buhari’s goodwill greetings to you is on account of the fact that he won an election that many people think he was not going to win,” said Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, ??who represented Mr. Buhari.

“Americans say that elections are won on the dollar. It’s very improbable that anybody can win an election without money. We didn’t have advertising money on our campaign. Even when we had little money to spend on advertising, the Nigerian Television Authority was not making available to us slots, neither was AIT.

“I remember on a particular night I called NTA, they had 16 slots of one minute adverts and I said I wanted to buy one minute for the Buhari campaign, they said all 16 had been sold.

“Some other instances that exposed the partisan nature of the NTA. Money was returned to us, from AIT money was returned to us. They simply won’t advertise for us.”

Mr. Shehu expressed the presidency’s gratitude to Statecraft, an arm on The Red Media, for ?”selling an unlikely candidate to a very skeptical nation.”

“The day there was a security siege at my home, I woke up to see that my house had been surrounded by armed policemen in the course of the campaign,” Mr. Shehu said.

Bridesmaid’s Collapse During Bride & Groom’s First Kiss

Newlyweds Kevin Kennedy Ryan and Jessica Ryan Smith will never forget their first kiss as husband and wife, for more than the usual reason.

Just as Ryan was following the orders of the judge who presided over their Chicago wedding to “kiss the bride,” his younger sister, a bridesmaid, fainted and fell face forward onto the ground.

“As we were leaning in you just heard this huge thud,” Ryan, 25, told ABC News. “I first thought she’d tripped over something so I stifled a laugh.”

(Credit: Sean Cook Weddings)

Instead, the bridesmaid, 16-year-old Grace Ryan, had fallen victim to the blistering heat of a July day in Chicago inside a venue that had floor-to-ceiling windows.

“I’m pretty sure it was the hottest day of the year,” the groom said of his July 25 wedding. “We’d all been standing in the sun doing pictures. … I know I was dripping with sweat.”

Grace was able to stand back up after her fall with a little help, but was still “wobbly,” according to Ryan, so was taken down to the bridal party room to sit down and eat and drink.

“She had a tiny little nick on her chin and a tiny cut under her eye but she was fine,” Ryan said.

Meanwhile, the wedding continued on without her, starting with a redo of the couple’s kiss.

“As we’re redoing the kiss, you can see the flowers on the ground that she kind of knocked down,” Ryan said.

Ryan said he did not know the moment had been captured so perfectly on camera by wedding photographer Sean Cook until Cook sent him a preview asking him if he wanted to include his sister’s fall in his and Smith’s official wedding photos.

Two Suicide Bombers Attack Village During Osinbajo’s Maiduguri Visit

Two suicide bombers, male and female, today blew themselves up outside a village in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, at the time the vice president of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbanjo, was visiting the city, witnesses and security sources said.

VP Osibanjo arrived Maiduguri at about 10:45 am.

He was in to assess the security situation in the state capital, to visit the Internally Displaced Persons camps, before proceeding to Yola, another northeast Nigerian city plagued by Boko Haram insurgency, on a similar? mission.

The two suicide ?bombers blew themselves up in Mulai barely an hour after the VP arrived the city and was going about his assignment.

Mulai is located on the Southwest flank of Maiduguri, while Dalori IDP camp is located about 30km at the southeast axis of the city.

Witnesses said the first bomber, a female, suspected to be in her teens, had explosives planted around her body, concealed with her garment.

She was seen near the main gate of Mulai General Hospital, 10 kilometers southwest of Maiduguri.

Samaila Babayo, a witness, told journalists, “I saw the woman while she was trying to find her way into the hospital. She covered herself with a Hijab and wanted to enter the hospital but was forced to stop while approaching the facility.

“I strongly suspect that the explosives in her body were remotely controlled because while guards at the gate of the hospital were shouting at her, we heard a loud bang and that was all, she was completely torn to shreds by her own explosive,” he said.

Al?most immediately, the second bomber, who was riding a bicycle arrived a spot near the perimeter fencing of the hospital and immediately detonated the explosive on him.

One of the security operatives at the hospital said, “The two bombers wanted to enter the hospital, one was a lady and the other a man of about 20 years who rode on bicycle through the back of the hospital.

“But when the gate guards denied them entry, the explosions in their bodies detonated and killed them,” he said.

Witnesses said no one was injured in the two blasts because they were sent back by the security guards.

Mato Abdulmuminu, a trader who has a stall across the road opposite the hospital, said “from the way the lady was advancing towards the hospital, it was immediately suspected that the lady had a sinister motive. The people began to shout at her so she began to turn back and then the bomb went off. The second bomb blew almost immediately”.

Why China Restricts Fasting By Xinjiang Muslims During Ramadan

In an attempt to clamp down on religious expression, China has restricted fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in the Xinjiang region, which is largely Muslim.

China has banned civil servants, students, and teachers in the far west region from fasting during Ramadan and ordered restaurants to stay open,Agence France-Presse reported on Thursday.

A notice posted last week on the website of the state Food and Drug Administration in Jinghe county stated that  “food service workplaces will operate normal hours during Ramadan.”

Muslims around the world celebrated the start of Ramadan on Thursday. They are required to fast from dawn to dusk, but China’s ruling Communist Party is trying to restrict the practice in Xinjiang.

AFP reports that officials in the region’s Bole county were told not to “engage in fasting, vigils or other religious activities.”

The World Uighur Congress on Thursday asked China to end its restrictions. The statement adds that such prohibitions “serve only to deepen the division” between Uighurs and the rest of the Chinese community and “fuel further resentment of the state.”

The estimated 12 million Uighurs in Xinjiang are Sunni Muslims. They speak a Turkic language, and regard themselves as culturally and ethnically close to Central Asian nations. The region borders Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.
