Thailand’s Beloved King, Unifying Figure, Dies At 88

Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-serving monarch, has died at the age of 88, the palace announced Thursday, leaving a divided nation bereft of a rare figure of unity.

“Although the team of doctors treated him to the best of their ability, his condition deteriorated,” the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement.

“At 15:52 (0852 GMT) he died at Siriraj Hospital peacefully,” it said as large crowds kept vigil outside the hospital where the monarch spent most of the last two years.

All Thai television stations switched to a special announcement that began with black and white photographs of the king, before a formally dressed presenter read out the palace statement.

Bhumipol’s death, which will lead to a one-year mourning period, ends a remarkable seven-decade reign and plunges Thailand into a deeply uncertain future.

Most Thais have known no other monarch and Bhumibol has been portrayed as a guiding light through decades of political turmoil, coups and violent unrest.

His 64-year-old son, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is his named successor.

Bhumibol’s death is a major test for the country’s generals, who seized power in 2014 vowing to restore stability after a decade of political chaos, a turbulent period exacerbated by the king’s declining health as jostling elites competed for power.

The military has deep links with the palace and many inside the kingdom saw the putsch as a move to ensure generals could stamp down on any instability during a succession.

Teen Dies After 68-Day Religious Fast In India

The 13-year-old girl in the southern Indian city of Secunderabad was unusually devout, her relatives said. Even in her younger years, Aradhana Samdhariya was known to undertake strict fasts from time to time to embrace her Jain faith.

Fasting is not uncommon for Jains, a centuries-old religious sect in India that embraces non-violence as its chief tenet. Jains practice strict vegetarianism and barefoot, white-robed Jain monks carry a small brush to swipe in front of them as they walk — lest they inadvertently kill a small creature.

Even among the faithful, Aradhana’s ritual was extreme, however. She died Oct. 3, not long after completing a 68-day religious fast allegedly supported by her parents, an affluent jeweler and his wife.
As she grew weaker, she was kept home from school, according to a report in the Indian Express newspaper. Her relatives dressed her in finery, praised her devotion and took selfies with her, reports said.

“We did not try to hide it from anyone. Everyone knew,” her grandfather, Manikchand Samdhariya, told the Indian Express.

The grandfather said that the devout girl was determined to fast and gave her parents a choice: either the extreme fast or permit her to take “diksha,” the Jain process of giving up ones’ earthly possessions and attachments in order to become a monk.

After her fast was complete, the Jain community celebrated her success in a grand ceremony, with banner advertisements of congratulations in local newspapers. The teen was “dressed up like a goddess” and driven through the streets of her community in a silver chariot, according to a report in Firstpost.

She collapsed and died of cardiac arrest shortly after. Hundreds then attended her funeral. After a local child welfare organization filed a complaint, police launched an investigation and the girl’s parents charged with culpable homicide and a violation of the juvenile justice act Sunday, police said.

The family has denied she was forced or coerced into the fast.

“The same people who came and appreciated that your daughter is doing something great are now saying, ‘You starved her to death,’” the child’s father, Lakshmichand Samdhariya, told Firstpost.

He never got that chance. Swabey died peacefully early Friday. “Amongst our sadness, we are so proud of her courage, her spirit and the determination she showed throughout her illness,” Swabey’s family posted to Facebook. Imo State University Student Dies During Graduation “Water Ritual”

We got this tragic report from a facebook user and this is how the story was narrated…

“Tragedy struck yesterday as a fresh graduate of the Imo State University took his last breathe as students poured him water in jubilation of final year completion. What seem to be jubilation turned into a gathering of sorrow when the victim was running away from a number of students who pursued after him to pour dirty water on him. In that quest to dodge the water being poured on him, he fell into a soakaway pit and got drowned. The dirty water from the pit however is partially passing a light current as the pit is dug beside their transformer where earth-wire is buried. Pouring of water has been banned in schools but some students would not obey this. Many students in this light unaccepted celebration of final papers have been injured, poured acid and some other dangerous liquids while some other persons have gone to the great beyond via this. I think every final year student should learn from this as well as those who dedicate them to pouring water on university finalists. Please don’t scroll down or feel too big without Typing R.I.P FOR THIS BROTHER”

Expectant Mom Hit by Car Dies; Baby Born Alive

A pregnant woman sitting outside a drugstore died when an elderly driver trying to park jumped the curb and pinned her against the wall, police said. Doctors delivered her nearly full-term baby, who police said was in critical condition Wednesday night. A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday that no information about the child would be released.

The victim, 30-year-old Jodie Guthrie, had been sitting outside a Rite Aid on the city’s North Side on Wednesday afternoon when an 88-year-old motorist pulled into a parking space, authorities said. The driver might have hit the gas instead of the brake, police said, causing his minivan to lurch out of the parking space and onto the walkway where Guthrie sat.

Witnesses tried to get the driver to back up after the accident, but he didn’t seem to understand what happened — possibly because he couldn’t see Guthrie pinned behind the car, said police Commander RaShall Brackney. “He appeared to be disoriented at that point in time and confused as to the directions they were giving him,” Brackney said Wednesday.

The motorist was questioned by detectives and released Wednesday night without charges. However, the investigation remains open, Lt. Daniel Herrmann told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Thursday. The driver’s granddaughter Candy Thompson apologized to Guthrie’s family. Thompson was not with her grandfather during the accident. “I can’t imagine what her family is going through right now,” Thompson told KDKA-TV. “They are in my thoughts and prayers.”

Duchess of Alba, the World’s Most Titled Aristocrat Dies

Spain’s 18th Duchess of Alba, who died on Thursday aged 88, was one of Europe’s wealthiest and most titled aristocrats, the owner of fabulous palaces and priceless works of art.

She died after a short illness, surrounded by family in the 14th century Palacio de Duenas in Seville, famous for its lemon-tree-filled courtyards and her favorite of her many properties.

Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, known to friends as ‘Cayetana’, was named by Guinness World Records as the world’s most titled person.

With her cloud of white hair and face moulded by plastic surgery, she was rarely out of the Spanish gossip magazines, most recently on the arm of her third husband, 24 years her junior.

Head of one of Spain’s oldest aristocratic families dating back to the 1400s, and the third woman to hold the title of Duchess of Alba in her own right, her wealth is estimated at between 600 million and 3.5 billion euros.

“I don’t like to talk about money. Many people confuse having cash with having assets – we’ve never had a lot of cash,” she wrote in her autobiography. The duchess also tells in her autobiography of how Spanish artist Pablo Picasso asked her to pose nude to recreate the painting, but her conservative first husband forbade it.

Born in 1926 in a neoclassical palace in Madrid, she spent much of her childhood in London when her father was ambassador to Britain and where she dined with Winston Churchill and played with Princess Margaret. Her father, an Anglophile and royalist, sided with dictator Francisco Franco at the beginning of Spain’s Civil War but relations grew frosty as it became clear Franco would not reinstate a king as head of Spain.

Zambia’s President, ‘King Cobra’ Sata, dies in London

Zambian President Michael Sata, an abrasive figure nicknamed ‘King Cobra’ because of his venomous tongue, has died in London where he had been receiving medical treatment, the government in Africa’s second-largest copper producer said on Wednesday.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed but Sata, who became president of the landlocked southern African nation in 2011, had been ill for some time.

“As you are aware the president was receiving medical attention in London,” cabinet secretary Roland Msiska announced on state television. “The head of state passed away on October 28. President Sata’s demise is deeply regretted.”
