Kogi Gov., Yahaya Bello, Nominates Deputy

Following the refusal of Hon. James Faleke to be running mate to the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the governor has finally appointed Hon. Simon Achuba as his deputy.

Achuba, a former deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) few weeks to state governorship election.

It was reliably gathered yesterday that the governor has sent his name to the state assembly for confirmation next Wednesday when the assembly would sit.

Forwarding of the name of Achuba to the state assembly brings to rest the insinuation in some parts of the state that some people were jostling for the number two position as the governor was yet to choose one out of them since he has the prerogative to appoint somebody he can work with.

The letter of appointment of Achuba signed by the governor and forwarded to the state assembly read in part: “In line with the provision of section 186 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended, I have the pleasure to forward herewith the name of Hon. Simon Achuba for approval of appointment as the deputy governor of Kogi State.

“Achuba hails from Ibaji Local Government Area of the state and was a two-time member of the assembly (1999 to 2007) wherein he was deputy speaker of the assembly during his second tenure (2003 to 2007).

“In view of the above, it will be highly appreciated if the request is treated and approved with utmost speed to pave way for his assumption of office.”

Sources further hinted that the state assembly, upon receiving the letter, fixed February 10 for the confirmation as deputy governor of the name forwarded to it.

Governor Yahaya Bello Gets Sworn In Without A Deputy

Kogi State on Wednesday made another unusual history as its fourth democratically elected governor, Yahaya Bello, was sworn in without a deputy.

The man nominated by the All Progressives Congress to be Mr. Bello’s deputy, James Faleke, made real his threat not to present himself for swearing in with the governor.

He was conspicuously absent at Wednesday’s ceremony, and no replacement was announced at the event.

The legal implication of that arrangement remained unclear Wednesday.

It is the first time in Nigeria’s political history that an elected governor would be inaugurated without a deputy.

The North-Central state had made another history late last year when a leading governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu, died before its governorship election is concluded, throwing the state into what appeared a constitutional logjam.

On Wednesday, Mr. Bello was inaugurated amid pomp and ceremony by the Chief Judge of the state, Nasir Ajana, who administered the oath of office and that of allegiance on him.

Fayose, Deputy, Others Lose Bid To Stop Impeachment

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and his deputy, Olusola Kolapo, yesterday lost the bid to stop moves for their impeachment. A Federal High Court in Abuja rejected their prayers for interim orders restraining House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Omirin and other All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola and others from proceeding with the impeachment plot.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in a ruling on their motion ex-parte, granted them leave for substituted services of all processes in relation to the suit, on the defendants.

The judge ordered Omirin and other defendants in the suit to appear before the court on April 16 to show why the restraining orders sought against them by the plaintiffs should not be granted. The plaintiffs include Joseph Dele Olugbemi (who claimed to be Speaker), the  House of Assembly, Fayose and Kolapo. Listed as defendants are Omirin, the inspector general of Police (IGP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the chief judge.

SHOCKER: Amaechi’s Deputy Dumps APC For PDP

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru, has dumped the state’s ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, reliable sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Ikuru, who was one of Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s major ally, is said to have announced his defection in Port Harcourt, the state capital at about 4 p.m.

The decampee was first elected deputy governor to Celestine Omehia in 2007, before the duo was removed by the Supreme Court less than six months in office. When Mr. Amaechi was sworn in as governor, he retained Mr. Ikuru as his deputy and the duo fought against the interests and allies of the former governor of the state, Peter Odili.

At the time Mr. Amaechi fell out with the leadership of the PDP and defected to the APC with majority of his aides, Mr. Ikuru remained loyal to the governor and fought on the same side.

A source from the Brick House, Port Harcourt, who pleaded not to be named because he is not authorised to speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES, that Mr. Ikuru has left the APC.
“I can tell you that the deputy governor has defected to the PDP. He has already informed the governor about it and may soon address a press conference,” the source said.

Attempts to reach the media aides to the deputy governor failed as they would not pick calls or respond to text messages to their telephones.

Mr. Ikuru’s defection could further polarise the already volatile political situation in Rivers that has pitted loyalists of Mr. Amaechi against those of the PDP governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike, who himself is a former ally to the outgoing governor.
