Nigeria Is No. 1 Scrabble Nation In the World, Yet Team Denied French Visas

Nigeria is the English-speaking world’s Scrabble superpower. Africa’s most populous nation is home not only to the global Scrabble champion, but team Nigeria ranks as the world’s top Scrabble playing nation — ahead of the U.S. in second place.

The Scrabble world champion is Wellington Jighere. He’s 33, has a soft voice, a slow smile and a penchant for fedoras, earning him the nickname “the Cat in the Hat”. Jighere acknowledges that he’s taciturn by nature, but also has an explosive, infectious laugh, though he considers Scrabble serious business.

“You can’t afford to waste too much energy doing unnecessary chatter,” he says. “During a tournament, I see it as business time. And that is no time to be joking around.” Jighere plays chess to relax, “and for fun,” he says.

Jet-lagged and weary, Jighere was crowned the world Scrabble champ last year in a grueling 32-round competition in Australia. Up to 30 of the top 100 global players are from Nigeria, which has the highest percentage of any country in the top 200. The Nigerians’ apparent collective strategy — short words that rack up the points.

Nigerians have been credited with perfecting that tactic under the tutorship of senior team coach, Prince Anthony Ikolo. He says Nigerians are passionate about Scrabble and the short word method gives them an edge. Many put Nigeria’s towering Scrabble prowess down to its players’ ability to “choke the board” as they say, with this defensive play.

“The game of Scrabble is actually built around short words — especially five letter words,” says Ikolo. “If you have such a word base, then you are good to go. But it would be a very big mistake for the world to think our players only know short words, especially five-letter words,” he warns.

The coach says “the short words help you to be defensive (by blocking longer words from opponents, but when it’s time to be offensive, we know those long words also. Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to Scrabble”.

I Never Denied My Lip Fillers- Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner, in her Elle Canada Magazine interview spoke specifically on her lips and the injections… of which she has now admitted to.

Mama Kris was “super-against” the procedure, Kylie notes, “but I begged her and begged her and she finally let me do it.” As she’s said before, Kylie explained her lips had been a long-term insecurity; as to why she didn’t immediately come clean, she says she thought it was obvious anyway (and, also, nobody else’s business!).

And, she adds, “I never denied” going under the needle either. This seems like an obvious fact-checking opportunity at first, but it turns out she’s right! Really, she pretty much never did say, “Nope, no fillers” at least not outright! Instead, she and her publicists talked around the subject masterfully in interviews and social media updates over the past year or so, never explicitly lying but, you know, perhaps falling a little short of a full disclosure also. Here’s some sneaky-smart examples:

“That’s so ridiculous and not true.”Daily Mail, March 2014 (on rumors of lip fillers AND a nose job)

“These plastic surgery rumors hurt my feelings to be honest, and are kinda insulting.” —Twitter, April 2014

“How long are we gonna talk about this lip thing lmao Let’s get a [ sic] our lives together guys and talk about some important shit.” —Twitter, October 2014

“I love lip liner and over lining my lips... I feel like everyone has been talking about [my lips] for months, so I’m kind of sick of it,” —E! News, November 2014

“Kylie’s lips are created using expertly applied lip liner and a little lip balm I find it funny that so much attention is drawn to my work, but I like it.” —Daily Mail, December 2014 (an interview with Kylie’s makeup artist)

“I know how to do my makeup, contour, and everything. I’m not against surgery. I’d never say no, but I don’t desire it right now.” —Cosmopolitan, February 2015

“Stop talking about my lipsI’ve never been under the knife.” —Grazia, April 2015.

“No one’s ever asked me about my lipsmy heart literally dropped.” KUWTK, May 2015.

Kylie first spoke about her fillers on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians back in May, after sister Khloé told her that she didn’t want to “look like a liar” on the subject. But technically she never did, seriously! Her konscience should be totes clear, right?

We Never Denied APC Broadcast Space- AIT

Management of DAAR Communications, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT), has denied allegations that it exhibited bias against the presidential campaign of Muhammadu Buhari, ahead the March 28 election.

This was as the company refuted claims that it denied the All Progressives Congress (APC) considerable airtime on its medium.

In a statement issued by the management of DAAR Communications, following a statement credited to the head of President Muhammadu Buhari media team, Garba Shehu, said “we wish to state categorically and emphatically that at no time did we reject or deny the presidential candidate of the APC broadcast space on our station – Africa Independent Television (AIT).

“It has always been our policy to open up the democratic space to all the broad spectrum of actors in the political horizon.

“For the benefit of discerning members of the public and political academics who will obviously document some facts for historical purposes and the stock of public information compendium, we hereby challenge Mallam Garba Shehu to state the names of the officer(s)/department(s) that he dealt with, wherein the materials that he wanted aired were out rightly rejected.”

It added that “we feel pained, disappointed and betrayed by the allegation of maltreatment of APC presidential campaigns by Mallam Garba Shehu who, at various times, requested for unusual discounts and concessions, at short notices, which we often obliged in our spirited efforts of ensuring that we engaged all political parties; most especially the APC in our broadcasts so that we would be fair to all parties.”

We Were Denied Opportunity To Vote For Buhari, Says Igbo Leader

The APC National Auditor, Dr. George Moghalu told igbo leaders at a dinner organised by Igbo Progressives, IP, Lagos State chapter that igbos won’t be marginalized in the Muhammadu Buhari presidency.

In his keynote address at the event , Moghalu said that Igbos represent one of the tripod-legs that make up Nigeria and therefore Buhari can’t afford to ignore thhe grou as no political party would survive without the support of the Igbo.

Earlier, the Convener of IP, Chief Dimude had revealed that the dinner was for the APC “to enable them explain the party’s national agenda for the Igbo and the place of the Igbo nation in the APC to ensure maximum support for high ranking Igbo sons and daughters in the APC, situating our intellectual contributions to the APC at the centre and determining our protection under the APC government in Lagos State.”

Moghalu who reminded the region that Buhari got only 0.013 per cent of Igbo votes said Ndigbo must begin to realign as a people to get things done right.

He said: “The reality on the ground is that we have no ranking Senator or ranking member of the House of Representatives from the South-East. We can’t bid for the post of the Senate President, neither can we bid for the Speakership of the House of representatives. It is not about a wish, but about the pains I feel. It was politically wrong for us. In the electioneering process, our people were not allowed to vote. The environment for our people to exercise their civic rights was not provided. We were denied the opportunity to vote, but at the same time, I feel bad as a person.

“I feel worried for the Igbo nation. So, as a people, we must realign and see to what extent we are going to get things done right.
‘’Fortunately for us, the leadership of General Buhari has expressed a desire to turn around the electoral process so that the people’s vote can count; so that the people can choose their leaders themselves.”

Why Deeper Life Denied Jonathan Church Entry During Campaign

President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to ‘worship’ at Deeper Christian Life Ministry during the presidential election campaign hit the rocks as pastorate of the church outrightly turned down his request.

It was gathered that President Jonathan, who worshiped in most churches across the country before the March 28 presidential election, was denied entry into Deeper Life, when he wrote authorities of the ministry to inform them of his visit last January.

Jonathan had during one of his visits to Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, explained why he was embarking on ‘presidential church tour’.

According to him, “Traditionally, we have the State House Chapel where I worship every Sunday. If we do not have the chapel, probably I would have been here one or two times before this time.

“It is only during the Christmas period, maybe two Sundays before Christmas and the Sunday before and after New Year that we sometimes close the chapel, and allow people to participate in their church services and that time, I do go round.

“This year, we have decided that from now onward, until I leave the State House, every last Sunday of the month, I will go to different churches.

“Yes, that is the State House Chapel presided over by a chaplain and from time to time other men and women of God come to preach to us.

“But I feel that it is good for me to go round and continue to appreciate what our brothers and sisters have been doing”.

However, it was learnt that the Special Adviser to Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abata had on January 22, written the authorities of the church through the office of its spokesman, Pastor Segun Babatope to inform them about his visit but the leadership of the church refused to acknowledge the letter.

According to an insider, when Babatope informed leaders of the church about the development, many of them kicked against it, saying that the ministry is not a platform where politicians come to campaign.

Jonathan was originally billed to visit Deeper Life on February 8 after leaving Redemption Camp, but he had to proceed to the Lord’s Chosen when he discovered the church was not ready to welcome him.

The highly-placed source said the church’s decision to honourably turn down the request was because of how some sections of media misquoted Bishop David Oyedpoe of Winners Chapel during Jonathan’s visit to the church.

Outrage After S.A Minister Denied Entry To Israel

South Africa demands explanation from Tel Aviv after minister is denied visa to visit Israel for diplomatic work.  The government of South Africa has expressed outrage after Israel’s decision to deny a visa to Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

Clayson Monyela, Deputy Director General of Department of International Relations and Cooperation, told Al Jazeera on Thursday the Israeli government needed to offer a reason for the snubbing. “We are taking it up through the proper channels.

“We need to receive a proper explanation for the denial of a visa to a sitting cabinet minister,” Monyela said.

The minister was scheduled to travel to the occupied Palestinian territories from April 25-29. He was scheduled to secure further collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and institutions in Palestine.

Nzimande’s spokesperson told local media that the denial of the visa had caused a “serious diplomatic problem“.
