Parents protest Queen’s College pupils’ death

Parents are bitter about how their children are being treated at Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos Mainland, where two pupils have died from drinking unclean water.

Vivian Osuinyi died of diarrhea on February 14; Itula Bithna died of typhoid on February 22.

The girls, who were junior secondary pupils, died at home after falling ill in school

The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman, Mr John Ofordike, said he was called to the school three months ago to attend to a medical issue.

“As far as I am concerned I cannot tell you the cause of their death, but, was told that it is typhoid fever and it was caused by bad water. Three months ago, there was an incident in the college. Students were vomiting and purging and I was called upon. When I got there I saw children at the sick bay receiving treatments and while some were still waiting to be treated. We tried to examine the issue but didn’t know where the fault was. So in the end, I donated 3,000 bags of pure water which lasted for five days and during that period the number of children vomiting and purging reduced

“Before they vacated, I advised parents to take their children for medical check-up. So many did and I got so many complaints – of fever, high level of typhoid in their system. It is disheartening that four months into my election as the chairman, there have been medical issues and even deaths,” he said.

Ofordike noted that the pupils were not benefiting from the Queen’s Delight table water which is produced in the school by a private firm.

The firm started operation about two years ago, with an agreement to provide potable water for domestic use in the school. However, Ofordike said the water was being sold to outsiders without consideration for the pupils.

Henceforth, he said, the firm would provide the water for use in the dormitories, kitchen, clinic and dining areas.

A parent, who simply called himself Mr Zubby, blamed the pupils’ death on negligence.

He said: “It is a result of negligence. That is why we are here. Nobody is happy. I have two children here and I would not want anything to go wrong with them. After their inter-house sports, I took my daughters’ home. That night one of them fell really sick. When we conducted tests on them, they were both positive with high level of typhoid. So we started advising parents to do same, so many results from the parents were positive too. In fact one of us said her daughter’s was critical.

“I think there should be transparency; you do not expect any parent to start raising issue where there is none. Most times these children come back home and complain of one thing or the other and where the management is not able to say let us sit down and proffer solution it becomes a big issue.”

Another parent, Mr Timothy Babafemi, said: “We are not happy at all with the issue. There were rusted pipes that resulted in the contamination of the water. Though my daughter suffered from malaria as a result of bad windows, mosquitoes, but with the help of the PTA and other agencies, the deteriorated facilities in the school are being repaired”.

FG investigates death of two Queen’s College students

Isaac Adewole, minister of health, has set up a team to probe the deaths of two students of Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos.

One of the students was said to have died in her house during the ongoing mid-term holiday.

There are reports that they died following an outbreak of diarrhea, but the school authorities have denied the news.

According to a statement by the ministry, Adewole’s investigative team comprises members of staff the department of medicine at the University of Lagos and the epidemiology unit of the Lagos state ministry of health.

The statement said Adewole was in Lagos to witness the commissioning of the secretariat of the West African College of Surgeons when he was informed of the situation in the school.

He was said to have diverted his convoy to the school, where he met Lami Amodu, the principal, some staff, and health officials.

“He was told the school is on mid-term break but there were two reported deaths of students at home. One due to febrile illness and cause of the second is unknown,” the statement read.

“Following his interaction, the minister has directed the officials of the ministry of health, community health, and LUTH to ascertain the cause of death of the students, inspect the school environment including the kitchen, examine the source of water supply and test its suitability for human consumption and also visit the bereaved families.”

Adewole, who said the report of investigation will be forwarded to the minister of education, called for calm, saying government is on top of the situation.”

According to New Telegraph, the principal blamed rumor mongers for the reports on diarrhea.

She reportedly said the only death case known to the school was that of one Vivian Osuyi, a junior secondary school 2 pupil, whom she noted was taken home by her parents after the school called their attention to her health situation about two weeks ago.

“I am still at a loss about this development. We had our inter-house-sport on Wednesday and the students immediately left for home for midterm break,” she said.

“As I’m speaking to you, there is no student in school, so where is the rumour of the epidemic coming from? Who is behind this new round of rumour?”

No Nigerian died in South African xenophobic attacks – Nigerian government

The Federal Government has said no Nigerian died during the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The government on Thursday also urged the South African government to put in place measures to end the incessant attacks on Nigerians in that country.

The Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Khadija Abba-Ibrahim, gave the task in Abuja during a second summon to the High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria, Lulu Aaron-Mnguni, on the issue.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Ministry had on Monday, February 20, summoned the South Africa High Commissioner over the matter.
Nigerian buildings, properties and places of worship worth millions of dollars were destroyed by South Africans on February 5 and 18.

“The Federal Government strongly urges the South African government to take all necessary measures to protect the lives and foreigners living and working in South Africa.

“Furthermore, the federal government urges the South African Government to bring perpetrators of these deplorable acts of violence to justice.
“The ministry continues to urge Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law abiding, and be vigilant at the same time.’’

“The Federal Government of Nigeria will strenuously work towards the protection of Nigerians everywhere, including in South Africa,” she added.
NO DEATHS
The minister said no Nigerian lost their lives in the attacks contrary to reports in some media.
According to her, the reports that mentioned the killing of Nigerians in the xenophobic attacks are unsubstantiated.

“The ministry has not received the report of any death of Nigerian in the latest incidents of attacks against foreigners.
“The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria is in constant touch with the Nigerian Union in South Africa, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) of South Africa, as well as the South African police.

“All these agencies have confirmed that no Nigerian life was lost in the recent incident,” she said.

The minister said the government was in touch with South African authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerians there.
The minister therefore appealed to the media not to fuel the crisis further with unconfirmed reports.

Responding, the South Africa High Commissioner to Nigeria said his government was on top of the situation.

Mr. Aaron-Mnguni said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of South African will hold a briefing with the diplomatic community in his country on Friday to fashion out more ways to solve the problem.

Five Die in Anambra Road Crash

Five passengers of an Onitsha bound commercial vehicle on Friday lost their lives when the Toyota Previa vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck near Abba junction in Anambra State, on the Enugu- Onitsha expressway.

Mr Sunday Ajayi, the state Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the deaths in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Ajayi, who said four adults and a child lost their lives in the unfortunate incident, noted that the accident occurred around 6.19am on Friday, blaming it on route violation by the truck driver.

“We were there to rescue the victims of the accident where five souls were lost.

“From the information I have with me, I learnt that the truck was taking one-way and because of that, they had head-on-collision and five people were killed instantly.

“We have six people involved in the accident which meant that only the driver of the truck is alive.

“It is wrong to take one – way on the highways; it is dangerous and may lead to death.

“We advise people not to lay too much claims on their rights. They should be conscious while driving on the road. If someone is doing wrong on the road, they should avoid such driver to stay alive.

“The law will surely catch up with whoever does the wrong thing on the road,” he said.

Ajayi said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital mortuary.

An eyewitness, who said the commercial vehicle took off from Enugu, also blamed the truck which was heading towards Awka for the accident.

The source appealed to FRSC to sensitise and enlighten commuters on the need to always utilise their routes to avoid such fatal accidents.

Female corps member dies in Bayelsa orientation camp

A female corps member posted to Bayelsa State reportedly slumped and died at the State’s Orientation Camp in Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area.

According to reports, the corps member who was identified as Miss Elechi Chinyerem, aged 27, reportedly died after vomiting on arrival at the camp.

Fellow corps members claim that the deceased on arrival at the camp last Thursday looked “terribly sick” and could not participate in some opening sessions at the camp. A source said, “The doctor at the NYSC camp’s clinic immediately referred her to the state-owned Diette-Koki Memorial Hospital in the Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital, where she was confirmed dead.”

The deceased was a graduate of the Ignatius Azuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Army Denies Killing 150 Pro-Biafra Protesters

The Nigerian Army yesterday said it did not kill 150 pro-Biafran protesters, as alleged in a statement by the global human rights watchdog, Amnesty International (AI).

It said the global rights group appeared determined to wage a campaign of calumny against Nigeria’s military, especially the Army, with a planned release of a report on the alleged mass killing of members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by the Army.

A statement by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said the allegation is an “outright attempt to tarnish the reputation of the security forces in general and the Nigerian Army in particular, for whatever inexplicable parochial reasons”.

The Army accused AI for its sustained dabbling into Nigeria’s national security matters in manners that “obliterate objectivity, fairness and simple logic”.

The statement said: “We wish to debunk the insinuation that our troops perpetrated the killing of defenceless agitators. This is an outright attempt to tarnish the reputation of the security forces in general and the Army in particular, for whatever inexplicable parochial reasons. For the umpteenth time, the Army has informed the public about the heinous intent of this non-governmental organisation (NGO), which is never relenting in dabbling into our national security in manners that obliterate objectivity, fairness and simple logic.

“The evidence of MASSOB/IPOB violent secessionist agitations is widely known across the national and international domains. Their modus operandi has continued to relish violence that threatens national security. Indeed, between August 2015 and August 2016, the groups’ violent protests have manifested unimaginable atrocities to unleash the reign of peace, security and stability in several parts of the Southeast.

“A number of persons from the settler communities, who hailed from other parts of the country, were selected for attacks – killed and burnt. Such a reign of hate, terror and ethno-religious controversies that portend grave consequences for national security have been averted severally through the responsiveness of the Army and members of the security agencies.”

Gunmen Attack Oil Facility, Kill Four NSCDC Officials

Gunmen have killed four Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps guarding a facility operated by the Nigerian subsidiary of Italian group Eni, local and security officials said Wednesday.

Four members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, a paramilitary agency of the government, were killed on Monday at the installation at Omoku, near the oil hub of Port Harcourt,  they said.

They were shot dead by gunmen in military camouflage, they said.

“The (security) operatives had engaged the gunmen in a fierce gun battle on realising that the intruders were not military men,” state NSCDC spokesman Michael Oguntuase told AFP.

A community leader in Omoku who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident.

“Dressed in camouflage, they came in a speed boat at about 6:40pm on Monday, exchanged gunfire with the operatives, leading to the death of four,” he said.

He said an unspecified number of NSCDC personnel were wounded.

Officials at Agip, the local subsidiary of Eni, were not immediately available for comment. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Since the start of the year, several militant groups, Including the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), have bombed pipelines and facilities operated by oil companies, including Shell, Chevron, Exxon, Eni and state-run NNPC in the restive oil-producing south.

The attacks have slashed Nigeria’s oil output, hammering government revenue at a time of global low prices.

Nigeria is currently struggling to come out of a recession since August.

The attacks on oil infrastructure have continued despite government’s peace moves.

Protest in Enugu as 200 Herdsmen Invade Community

Residents of an Enugu community, Agu Obodo of Obeagwu Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, have protested the arrival of over 200 Fulani herdsmen and their cows in the area.

The panicky residents said they were overwhelmed by the arrival of over five trucks that were loaded with the herdsmen, their families and cows.

The residents urged the “strangers” to leave their land within three days because they could no longer go to their farms.

President-General of Ozalla Development Union (ODU), Chief Afam Ani, who led the protesting women, youths and traditional rulers, said the arrival of the herdsmen at the weekend caused serious anxiety among the people.

The community leader said residents living close to their farms abandoned them and took refuge in other parts of the town.

He told reporters that when the herdsmen were queried, they claimed to have been evicted from their previous settlement at Maryland in Enugu South Local Government Area and decided to resettle at Ozalla.

Ani said the residents had reported the matter to security agencies, the local and state governments to evict the herdsmen.

The community leader recalled what he called an ugly experience the community had with the herdsmen in 2012 when they allegedly attacked, raped and destroyed property.

He said: “There should be no doubt whatsoever that what we are faced with is the forcible invasion of our homeland by Fulani herdsmen who are likely armed with dangerous weapons. We consider this act to be extremely provocative and totally unacceptable to our people.”

The community leader said the herdsmen agreed to vacate the community within three days, adding that he had pleaded with security agencies to enforce the agreement.

A traditional ruler of one of the autonomous communities in Ozalla, Igwe C. O. Okafor, described the development as embarrassing.

The monarch said the herdsmen did not consult the community, either themselves or by proxy, before moving into the community.

He urged the government and security agencies to evict the herdsmen because of the security threat they posed to the community.

Angry Mob In Lagos Beat Up LASTMA Officials For Punching Lagos Driver Into Coma

There was pandemonium on Wednesday at the Costain area of Lagos State as an official of the Lagos State Management Authority and a bus driver were reportedly beaten to a pulp.

Punch Metro learnt that officials of LASTMA had allegedly apprehended the bus driver at the Costain bus stop, for allegedly violating a traffic rule.

It was alleged that an argument ensued between the driver, his conductor and the officials. In the ensuing scuffle, a LASTMA official allegedly punched the driver and he slumped.

A mob was reported to have barricaded the road in protest as the driver lay on the floor, foaming in the mouth.

The mob reportedly vandalised a LASTMA patrol car which drove into the protesters at the time, beating up the officials.

They were said to have mobilised and also attacked the LASTMA office in the area and vandalised vehicles in the yard before the intervention of policemen from the Iponri division.

A witness, Ibrahim Adisa, said the incident happened around 9am.

He said, “We saw that the LASTMA officials held the bus driver at the junction for breaking traffic rule. The man did not release the vehicle to them, which started an argument. The driver and the conductor then started fighting the LASTMA men.

“One of the LASTMA officials put his hand in the pocket and brought out a ring which he used to hit the driver. The man fell and started foaming in the mouth.  The officials then took his bus into their yard and left him on the ground.

“A mob barricaded the road and vandalised a LASTMA patrol car that came in that time. They beat up all the officials in the car. After that, they carried the man’s body into the LASTMA’s office and chased out the workers.”

Punch Metro learnt that the driver was later taken to a hospital after the police arrived to quell the unrest.

A motorcycle rider said the situation would have been worse but for the intervention of the police.

“Traffic was at a standstill and the hoodlums were looking for LASTMA officials or any government official to attack,” he added.

As of 3pm when Punch correspondent left the area, no traffic official was in sight as police patrol vehicles mounted surveillance in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding investigations were ongoing.

She said, “Yes, I can confirm that LASTMA officials impounded a vehicle and the driver and his conductor engaged the LASTMA officials in fisticuffs, which led to two losing consciousness. The two are the driver and a LASTMA official. They were both rushed to the hospital where they are currently recuperating. Investigation has commenced into the matter.”

The spokesperson for LASTMA, Mr. Mahmud Hassan, in a statement, denied that the driver was beaten by an official of the agency.

He explained that some hoodlums, who were attempting to free the driver’s bus, invaded the premises of the agency and vandalised vehicles.

He said, “The commercial bus was apprehended for illegal picking and dropping of passengers in the Costain area. The commercial bus was subsequently taken to the nearest yard of the agency at Iponri for booking.

“However, in a bid to circumvent the law and retrieve the vehicle from LASTMA’s yard, the driver mobilised friends and hoodlums, who attacked the Iponri office of the agency. They injured our personnel and damaged vehicles in the yard. However, when the driver’s action did not yield the desired result, he stripped himself naked and created a scene in order to draw the sympathy of unwary members of the public.

“When the act failed, his friends and hoodlums put him in a wheelbarrow with a clear intention to cause commotion and breakdown of law and order.”

Hassan said two of the hoodlums had been arrested and would be arraigned in court.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bashir Braimah, according to the statement, said no amount of violence would make the agency to shy away from its statutory responsibility.

35-Year Old Dies A Month To Wedding As Family Blames Fiance

A 35-year-old woman, Loretta Ewere, has been electrocuted at her fiance’s home on Ajoke Kazeem Street in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro learnt that Ewere’s fiancé, Segun Tolani, was fixing an electrical fault when the incident happened.

She was said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the area but was rejected before being confirmed dead at the Igando General Hospital.

A Punch correspondent, who visited the area on Tuesday, gathered that Ewere and Tolani had
scheduled their wedding for November and preparation was in top gear when tragedy struck.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the incident happened around 1pm on Saturday, adding that it created chaos in the neighbourhood.

He said, “The man had wanted to change his old cable TV decoder and antenna. When power was restored, he discovered that he didn’t have electricity in his house.

“He wanted to do it himself, but neighbours advised him to get the service of an electrician. He contacted an electrician who billed him N2,500. But he said the charge was too high. He decided to go and rent a wooden ladder from someone in the area.

“He mounted the ladder on the wall and called the lady from inside the room to assist him in holding the ladder. She held the ladder with one hand and held an iron pole beside the room with the other hand.

“While he was working, the wire fell and touched the pole she was holding and that was how she was electrocuted.”

Punch Metro learnt that Tolani called for help from a next-door neighbour, whose wife reportedly rushed to the scene to pull out the victim with her bare hands.

She was reportedly flung by the electric current.

An electrician was said to have been invited, who then disconnected the power.

“The woman fell down and hit her head against the concrete floor. People tried to resuscitate her by giving her milk; but she didn’t come round. A lot of time had been wasted. She was rushed to a private hospital in the area, but she was rejected.

“We took her to the general hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Her corpse was deposited in a mortuary,” another resident said.

Punch Metro gathered that Ewere, an indigene of Ewuru, Delta State, worked in Union Diagnostics, a medical lab in Ikeja, while Tolani, who hails from Ekiti State, worked with an insurance company.

When our correspondent visited the victim’s family house on Ogidan Street, Idimu, they said the family was too distraught to talk about the incident.

However, a relative, who identified himself simply as Charles, blamed the incident on Tolani’s stinginess.

He explained that the duo had been living together for the past four years, adding that the two families had started preparation for their wedding.

He said, “They did their introduction four years ago and since then, they had been staying together. Their marriage was slated for November and the two families have bought clothes and sent invitation to people.

“Around 1pm of the day that she died, she called one of her friends that she would be going to shop for the wedding, not knowing that she would die that day.

“It was the man’s stinginess that killed her. If he had paid someone to fix the electrical fault, this would not have happened.”

Meanwhile, friends of the victim have started paying tributes to her on the social media.

One of them, Kehinde, wrote on Facebook, “Loretta (Ewere), a member of the Purchasing and Supply Students Association, The Polytechnic Ibadan, was kind-hearted, brilliant and reserved.  The industrious lady was preparing for her last two exams (slated for October 4 and 6) left for her to become a graduate when she died.  We love you, but God loves you most. I pray He accepts your soul and comforts your household.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.

She said the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

She said, “The woman, Loretta Ewere, was electrocuted around 9am. She was living with one Segun Tolani, to whom she was supposed to be married next month. They were fixing a GoTV antenna when power was suddenly restored. Ewere, who was holding the antenna wire, was electrocuted. The corpse has been deposited in a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.”

British Tourist Dies Of Heart Attack In Hotel After Taking Viagra & Spending Night With Prostitute

A British holidaymaker has died of a suspected heart attack after popping Viagra with a hooker in Thailand. Michael Soden, 54, was last seen on Thursday evening taking a young sex worker back to his guest house room in notorious ‘sin city’ Pattaya.

But a concerned maid who noticed he hadn’t left the room the next day used a spare key to check and found him lying dead on the bathroom floor.

Police who searched the room discovered boxes of Viagra and believe that he died of a heart attack after having sex with the woman, who has not been found.

Senior officer Pitak Neonsaeng said: “There was Viagra in the room and other medicine. We’re not
totally sure of the cause of death yet but we think it’s a heart attack.

“He had taken the girl back to his room, taken Viagra and then died. We think that after he had finished his activities he went to bathroom and died.

“Something has caused him to suddenly fall ill.

“The man had been in Pattaya on holiday. We have spoken to staff at the guest house and we he had been using prostitutes every day during his stay.

“There were no signs of assault or robbery so we’re not looking for any suspects. We have sent the body away for examination. Details have been passed to the British Embassy.”

Police released pictures of officers arriving at the hotel and carrying the man’s body into an ambulance.

He is believed to have weighed around 15 stone, has a distinctive cat cartoon tattoo on his right calf, and been suffering with other health problems.

A maid at the guesthouse said they had seen Mr Soden drinking every day at a beer bar nearby the hotel.

She said he was seen taking the “bar gir” – a Thai term for sex worker – back to his second-storey room.

The maid, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s normal for men to take girls back to their room. I saw him go back with a girl at night time but we didn’t see him the next day.

“We knocked on the door but there was no reply so we went inside.

“The British man was always friendly and happy. It was a shock to see he had died. I don’t think he had been dead for very long after we found him.”

Pattaya – known as the ‘sin city’ and the ‘devil’s playground’ – has gained a notorious reputation for muggings and deaths among tourists.

It is home to thousands of prostitutes, sex shows and massage parlours that draw in visitors from around the world.

Boko Haram Attack Leaves Eight Dead In Borno

At least eight people were killed outside a church in a suspected Boko Haram attack carried out by gunmen on bicycles in northeast Nigeria, local residents said on Monday.

The attack happened shortly after morning service on Sunday in Kwamjilari village, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) east of the town of Chibok, in Borno state.

“Some of the worshippers remained around the church and the gunmen opened fire and eight men died,” said Luka Damina, from nearby Kautikeri village, where locals fled.

“Unknown to the residents, the gunmen had stationed some of their comrades on the road leading out
of the village and they shot anyone who tried to flee.

“Many people ran into the bush with gunshot wounds. But so far we can only confirm eight deaths.”

The attackers set fire to homes and fields of maize that were almost ready for harvest, according to a local chief in Kautikeri, who also said eight people were killed.

The chief said soldiers were later deployed to Kwamjilari from Chibok — the scene of a notorious kidnapping in 2014 when more than 200 schoolgirls were seized.

Schoolboy Dies After Taking Sweet, When Sweet Company Failed To Say Sweet Was Made Of Peanut

A schoolboy with a severe peanut allergy died after eating a sweet made from the nuts at a religious festival. An inquest into the tragic death of Aaron O’Farrell at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court heard there were no warnings on the packaging that the sweet was made entirely from peanuts.

The youngster had been at a Hindu religious festival in Birmingham, held 20 days before Diwali, the festival of lights. The sweets were given out by organisers as worshippers left the event.

The 11-year-old was at home with his parents James and Jayne just before lunchtime when he ate a
small piece of the sweet.

Within moments he started feeling sick and was given a soft drink, but soon began having difficulty
breathing.

His brother gave him a shot from his epipen and he was still conscious when paramedics arrived, but then went into cardiac arrest.

By the time the ambulance had raced the seven miles from his semi-detached home in Doe Lea, Derbys, to Chesterfield Royal Hospital his heart had stopped beating.

Medics battled to save the “kind and courageous” youngster, but he was pronounced dead later in hospital.

Chesterfield Coroners Court heard Aaron had been diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he was five after he had suffered skin rashes and a wheezy chest after being in the same room as peanuts.

A post mortem after the fatal incident on Sunday 28, September, 2014, showed an “abundance of mucus” and blood in his airways which was consistent with a severe allergic reaction.

Tests showed increase levels of the enzyme tryptase which confirmed Aaron had suffered anaphylaxis.

Aaron had started secondary school the day before he died.

Two Nuns Brutally Stabbed To Death At Their Home

Two nuns have been brutally stabbed to death at their Mississippi home, it was reported last night.

The bodies of Sister Paula Merrill and Sister Margaret Held were discovered on Thursday when they didn’t turn up for work at a nearby hospital.

Police said there were signs of a break-in at the property in Durant, Holmes County, and that their vehicle was missing. The nuns worked as nurses treating patients at the Lexington Medical Clinic, in one of the poorest areas of the state.

“They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine,” Reverend Greg Plata told the
Clarion Ledger.

“Their vocation was helping the poor. It’s so senseless.”

Church officials said the sisters also regularly distributed books, school supplies and other items to the poor.

The women were found dead at around 10.30am on Thursday after a co-worker went to check on them.

Their bodies have been taken to a state crime lab for autopsies, Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard said.

Italy Quake Death Toll Nears 250

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in central Italy rose to 247 on Thursday amid fears many more corpses would be found in the rubble of devastated mountain villages.

Rescuers sifted through collapsed masonry in the search for survivors, but their grim mission was clouded by uncertainty about exactly how many people had been staying in communities closest to the epicentre of Wednesday’s quake.

Hundreds of people spent the night sleeping in their cars, in hastily-assembled tents or as guests of families in nearby areas less affected by the quake.

Monica, a survivor from the tourist town of Amatrice, told of her numbed response when a 4.5-magnitude aftershock rattled the area just after 5.00 a.m. (0300 GMT).

“We are sleeping in the car and there were shocks all night. When the biggest one came, the car started moving and shaking.

“But what have we got to lose now? We have lost our house. So many friends and family are dead. We have lost everything, even our fear,” she told AGI news agency.

– Ghost villages –

The damage to smaller, more remote hamlets has left their very existence in doubt in an area that has suffered decades of depopulation and already has numerous “ghost” villages.

“If we don’t get help, l’Arquata is finished,” said Aleandro Petrucci, the mayor of Arquata del Tronto, which accounted for 57 of the confirmed deaths to date.

Petrucci said it was impossible to say exactly how many people were in the 13 hamlets comprising his community when the disaster struck.

“Here in the winter, the village is practically uninhabited but the population doubles or triples when people come back to their family houses in the summer,” he said.

In Pescara del Tronto, which was virtually razed by the quake, there only four permanently resident families.

But Petrucci said there could have been up to 300 people there on Wednesday.

Some may have fled back to Rome, the mayor said, appealing for them to get in touch. “Otherwise we could be trying to dig out ruins where there is no-one,” he said.

– Rebuild and start again –

Measuring 6.0-6.2 magnitude, the quake’s epicentre was near the towns of Accumoli and Amatrice, occurring at the shallow depth of four kilometres (2.5 miles), according to monitors.

But it was only the latest in a long string of killer quakes in the central Apennines, part of the mountainous “spine” that runs down Italy. Records dating back seven centuries attest to tens of thousands of deaths.

The Civil Protection agency which is coordinating the rescue effort said that in addition to the dead, 264 people had suffered injuries serious enough to be hospitalised. Several of them are in a critical state.

Although firemen and volunteers on the ground were pessimistic about the chance of finding any more survivors, several of them recalled that the last survivor of a 2009 in nearby L’Aquila was pulled from the rubble some 72 hours after it struck.

“The operation continued throughout the night and obviously there will be no let-up until it is absolutely clear that there is no possibility of finding any more people in the ruins,” said Immacolata Postiglione, the head of the Civil Protection agency’s emergency unit.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was chairing an emergency cabinet meeting which he said would put in place the first plans for reconstruction.

“The objective is to rebuild and start again,” he said.

An inquest was also underway into how such a thinly-populated area could have suffered such heavy casualties, given the lessons of recent history.

Seven years ago, the L’Aquila disaster, in which 300 people died, exposed how ill-equipped many of Italy’s centuries-old buildings are to cope with an earthquake.

– 13th-century tower intact –

“As geologists we have been saying for years that we are very far away in Italy from having a culture of prevention,” said Francesco Peduto, president of the Council of Italian Geologists.

After the L’Aquila quake, the Civil Protection agency made almost a billion euros available for upgrading buildings in seismically-vulnerable areas.

But the take-up of grants has been low, largely because of the cumbersome application process, according to critics.

One building which was supposed to have been quake-proofed was the Romolo Capranica school in Amatrice, which completely collapsed on Wednesday just four years after a 700,000-euro upgrade.

That was in sharp contrast to the oldest building in the town, the 13th-century Civic Tower, which was still standing Thursday, despite having been shaken sufficiently to detach its bell from its fastenings.

Girl Plunges Car Into Canal Killing Herself And Her Dad After Mistaking Accelarator For Brakes

A teenage learner driver killed herself and two others after mistaking accelerator for brake and plunging into canal.

The car fell more than 10 feet before it landed upside down in the water – with the force of the impact believed to have knocked all four people on board unconscious.

Locals frantically jumped in and tried to smash the windows and rescue them as they slowly submerged under the water.

According to Daily Mirror ,only one was rescued alive and rushed to hospital where she is in a coma, while the other three tragically died.

Reports said the 19-year-old girl, identified by her surname Wu – only had a learner’s licence and still needed to be accompanied by an adult.

She was reportedly driving her father’s car with her dad, 51, in the passenger seat and her sister, 16, and another friend, 17, in the back as they set off.

But soon after the inexperienced Wu started the engine, she reportedly stepped on the accelerator pedal – thinking it was the brake, causing the vehicle to charge forward and down the embankment of the canal.

All four were unconscious by the time they were pulled from the submerged vehicle, with paramedics pronouncing Wu, her dad, and the friend dead at the scene after unsuccessful attempts to revive them.

The tragic incident occurred in Dongfeng, which is in Zhongshan City in Guangdong Province in southern China.

Breast Feeding Week: Malnutrition Behind Half Of All Child Deaths

Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) says malnutrition is  responsible for one in every two death of children aged less than five years in Nigeria.

Sunday Okonkwo,  programme manager for CS-SUNN, made the observation at the commemoration of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week in Abuja tagged “Breastfeeding, A key to sustainable development”.

He said the key message of the breast feeding week is to “raise awareness on issues that affect children.

CS-SUNN leads advocacy for a coalition, Partnership for Advocacy Child and Family Health (PACFaH) which pushes for better nutrition for children .

“If you look at the issue of malnutrition you will find out that Malnutrition is responsible for every 1 in 2 under five year child death in Nigeria,” said Okoronkwo.

The National Demographic and Health Survey shows 37 per cent of children under age five are too short for their age, 29 per cent underweight and 18 per cent too thin for their age or wasted.

But the National Strategic Plan of Action on Nutrition (NSPAN) 2014-2019, which  provides a comprehensive and multi-sector approach to tackling the problem of malnutrition, is yet to be implemented.

“The NSPAN is a key document to scale up of nutrition in Nigeria, if implemented.  We appeal to the governments to provide budgetary allocation for its implementation in the 2017 budget, with emphasis on child and adolescent nutrition and timely release of funds,” said Okoronkwo.

He added that if the NSPAN is fully implemented it  will reduce up to about 20 percent malnutrition death by 2019.

UNICEF Nigeria, Nutrition Advocacy Specialist, Zakaria Fusheini, said, “As a country we have policies, so we need to ensure that these policies  are implemented to the letter and also to ensure that within the first 1000 days of life for children which start from conception  up to 2 years, children have all the nutrients that they need to grow optimally.”

The push is exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and complementary feeding from six months onward.

Zakaria added that there is a need to reach out to mothers who are in the rural areas who don’t have access to such information.

lekpa2

Following the death of popular singer and songwriter, Olumuyiwa Osinuga, popularly called Nomoreloss, Comedienne Lepacious Bose has lambasted those who uploaded his pictures on their social media profiles to mourn him, saying they are pretenders.

lekpa3The Comedienne on her Instagram page @lepaciousbose, in an open letter, referred to ‘pretenders’ as ‘fake ass’ who were nowhere to be found when the singer needed their help the most.

She wrote: Nomoreloss’ death – Stop celebrating a dead man we could have saved.

“Good night NoMoreLoss.

“Okay, so Normoloss is gone!

“Painful but more painful is all these social media downloaded pictures everywhere. Yes downloaded because most of you don’t have real pictures of him.

“He was never on your contact list neither did you have his phone number.

“Where were you all when he was sick and dying of pain and depression? Oh yeah some of you will say “I never knew/heard” that’s crap!

“His last post on instagram was 13 weeks ago did you try to find out why? Did he change ‘dp’ on ‘bbm’ or whatsapp? Some fake ass people putting his name on dp now didn’t put his picture up on his birthday oooo.

“Now he is dead, they are putting his picture up, calling him prolific music writer. Why didn’t you ever pay him to write for you. Calling him a great performer; when was the last time any of you paid him to perform at shows? Where were you all when Muyiwa’s career went down?

“You fake ass friends avoided him like a plague cause you thought he was no longer a relevant artist.

“Today you are celebrating a dead man we could have saved. A lovable guy that championed the crusade to save the life of another artist went off the radar and no one noticed.

“You guys never celebrate the living, once a celebrity becomes “irrelevant” you pack them, even fellow “relevant” celebrities avoid them like a plague.

“Reading some comments and remarks about Normoloss you will know most people didn’t know him they had no relationship with him they are just doing follow follow to look like they care.

“Muyiwa you were are great man, you will never watch another go through what you went through. You are gone now let the conscience of those of us alive judge us.

Judge Reverses Conviction, Frees Man Jailed 25 Years Ago

The conviction of a man 25 years ago for the murder of a friend has been overturned.

The woman was found dead, naked, beaten and dragged into a cross-like position in a park, after she left her apartment with the friend who was eventually accused of her murder.

Andre Hatchett’s conviction was overturned on Thursday after prosecutors and defense lawyers said a review of his case had found too many problems for it to stand.

The report said there were several relatives sitting in the courtroom, Hatchett beamed and applauded as his conviction was was overturned.
Hatchett
Hatchett said, “I’m so happy to be free again … I told my family, ‘I’ll be home one day,’ and they know I don’t lie to them.

“I lost my son in here, my mother, my brother, my aunt. I’m just holding on, and now I’m going to get back up,” he added as he left the courthouse, hugging his family members.

According to ABCNEWS, Hatchett’s then-lawyers were never told that prosecutors’ star witness had originally identified another man as the killer. The witness falsely denied on the stand that he’d smoked crack on the day of the killing. And the fact that Hatchett had injuries that raise doubts about his ability to carry out the crime went unmentioned at trial.

“Bad judgment and errors plagued this case from beginning to end,” one of his lawyers, Jim Brochin, said in a statement ahead of a court date Thursday afternoon, when Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson’s office planned to ask a judge to throw out Hatchett’s conviction.

“Mr. Hatchett was failed by almost every institution he came into contact with” in a case with sloppy police work, careless prosecutors and a defense that was at best perfunctory, Assistant District Attorney Mark Hale said Thursday.

His case was among more than 100 that Brooklyn prosecutors have been re-examining, in one of the most ambitious reviews of its kind in the country. So far, the DA’s office has disavowed 19 convictions and is standing by 38 others, the report has said.

Lekki Gardens MD Richard Nyong, Detained At Panti Over Building Collapse

Following the collapse of a five-storey building under construction on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lekki on Tuesday, the Police on Thursday said Richard Nyong, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Gardens, the construction company behind the collapsed building, has been detained at Panti Police Station.

Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, Mrs. Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed Nyong’s arrest, said he will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

On Wednesday, Governor Ambode had ordered all Directors of Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited to
submit themselves to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, within the next twenty four hours or face immediate arrest.

Nyong complied with the directive and reported himself to the office of the Commissioner of Police in company of his lawyer, Mr. Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and was detained after interrogation.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State Government in the wake of the building collapse, revealed that preliminary reports and investigation, it was discovered that the collapsed building was served contravention notice for exceeding the approved floors and thereafter sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The government also discovered that in a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident of Tuesday which has led to the death of over 30 persons.

Governor Ambode who is said to be irked at the spate of building collapse in the state had vowed to wield the big stick so as to put a stop to the disturbing trend.

Man Burns Teenage Pregnant Girlfriend Alive Because He Didn’t Want To Be A Father

A man burned alive his heavily pregnant teenage lover because he didn’t want to be a father.
Eren Toben, the father-to-be, and his friend lured Maria Peiner, 19, into a wood on the outskirts of Berlin to kill her.
Once in the woods he hit her with a piece of wood, stabbed her with a bread knife and then poured petrol over her and set her alight.

The judge said: “She was still conscious, it could have been 10, 20, 30 seconds – she was still moving.”

The body was found by a walker the next day and the pair responsible for her death were soon in
custody and blaming each other.

But Toben’s fingerprints were on the handle of the knife found near her charred remains. Both remained silent during the trial.
Of his accomplice the judge said:

“He acted for the sole purpose of taking pleasure in the destruction of another human being’s life.”

Eren Toben

Speaking after the trial, Maria’s brother said:

“I hope that our family can finally have some peace.”

In Germany the killer and his accomplice friend were each jailed for 14 years for the horrific crime.
Jud Regina Alex said of Toben, who hatched the plot:

“For him the crime was a solution, he wanted a free, happy life which he had control over. “He abused Maria’s love for him to lure her into an ambush.”

Maria was eight months pregnant and looking forward to becoming a mother, the court heard.
But in January last year Toben, together with his old schoolpal Daniel Mueller, 20, lied to her that they were going to go shopping for baby clothes and killed her in the woods.

Vietnamese Prisoner Escapes Death Row By Impregnating Herself With Fellow Inmate’s Sperm

The 42 year woman paid a 27 year old convict 50million Vietnamese Dong (£1,600) for his sperm which she used to impregnate herself with.

Nguyen Thi Hue, was arrested in the coastal province of Quang Ninh in 2012 on charges of drug trafficking, local newspaper Thanh Nien News reports. She was sentenced to death two years later.

When she appealed, the court upheld her sentence, according to the Associated Press. But it looks like Hue will avoid the death penalty after all.

The Vietnamese penal code forbids the execution of pregnant women or mothers with children under
the age of 36 months and orders that in those cases the death penalty should be converted to life imprisonment.

Investigators discovered that Hue paid a 27-year-old male inmate more than $2,000 in August 2015 for his semen and syringes, which they say she used to inseminate herself. The baby is due in April, and Hue’s sentence will officially be reduced to life imprisonment after the birth.

Four officers at the prison have been suspended for alleged negligence, the Associated Press report.

Argentine Player Shoots Referee Dead & Injures Another Player After He Was Given Red Card

An amateur football match was marred by violence after a player shot and killed a referee and also injured another player after he was given a red card. The match took place on Sunday in the Campo de la Ribera area of Cordoboa, Argentina. The referee, Cesar Flores, 48, was killed after being shot three times – once in the head, neck and chest, according to police.

According to the report bt MirrorSport, Police say referee Cesar Flores, 48, showed the assailant a red card for making a heavy tackle on an opponent. The player, who is at large, then retrieved a gun from his bag and shot Flores three times. He also wounded another player, 25-year-old Walter Zarate, before fleeing the scene.

Walter Zarate, was taken to hospital, though he is not in critical condition.

“It all happened during the match,” a police spokesman said. “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”

The shooting appears to have taken place during an amateur game that the Argentina’s Football Federation might not have organized. If so, this looks like a case of social problems in the South American nation spilling onto the field of play.

Pregnant Woman With Twins Dies After Row With Neighbour

The police have arrested a hair dresser, Mrs Tawa Biodun, in connection with the death of a pregnant woman, Mrs Esther Oluwadiya. Oluwadiya died during a squabble with Tawa who is her neighbour where both of them reside in Lagos State.

The late Oluwadiya was heavily pregnant with twins before the incident happened.

The incident happened on Monday at their house located at 15, Adeyinka street, Arida bus stop,
Ikotun, Lagos where they reside.

According to their neighbours, Biodun reportedly engaged Esther Oluwadiya in a fight and in the process she developed complications. She was rushed to Igando General Hospital where she was referred to LUTH where she eventually died.

According to residents, the 16-year-old daughter of Biodun and the 13-year-old son of the late Oluwadiya were fighting and instead of Biodun separating them, she allegedly encouraged her daughter to go and dress up properly to fight Oluwadiya’s son who is younger than her.

This attracted the attention of Oluwadiya who allegedly rebuked Biodun for encouraging the children to fight.

P.M.News gathered that this resulted in both women exchanging harsh words that led to a squabble. During the squabble, Oluwadiya developed complications as a result of the pregnancy and became unconscious. She was rushed to an hospital where she eventually died.

The matter was reported to the police and Biodun was arrested and detained at the Ikotun Police station. The police transferred the matter to SCID at Panti, Yaba where Biodun is currently detained for further investigation.

When our reporter visited the house where the incident happened, Biodun’s relatives, residents and sympathizers were there expressing shock over what happened.

Neighbours told our correspondent that the deceased’s husband identified as Joseph had gone to SCID in connection with the incident.

The neighbours also said they were short of words and described the late Oluwadiya as an easy going woman.

P.M.News gathered that her corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report.

Missing Woman’s Body Found In Car Parked Outside Wal-Mart Store For 3 Months

Nearly three months after she went missing, a 22-year-old woman’s body was found inside a car parked outside a Wal-Mart in Salinas, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Wal-Mart employees found the body of Lauren Jessie Moss inside her silver Volkswagen Jetta on Feb. 3., according to television station KSBW in Salinas.
Moss was last seen leaving a rehabilitation center in nearby Seaside on Nov. 13. She was reported
missing and a case was opened.

Police said the woman’s car had dark tinted windows and a sunshade covering the dashboard, which made it difficult to see inside the vehicle. The store’s security cameras only archive footage for 60 days, but video shows the car parked in the same spot since December.

Her car was investigated after a Walmart employee noticed the silver Jetta had been in the same spot for days.
Thornburg said she was considered a ‘voluntary missing adult’ because nothing indicated she had been involved in an argument or altercation before her disappearance.

The cause of death has not been determined, however the woman’s sister said she left a note and a drug needle was found inside the car.

10 Killed And Hundreds Homeless As Herdsmen Attack Benue Villages

About 10 people were feared dead yesterday, in fresh attacks between Fulani herdsmen and farmers at Tom-Anyiin and Tom-Ataan communities, Mbaya, Tombu in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. The Council Chairman, Godwin Iorsue, the Divisional Police Officer at Buruku, the Area Commander and some security operatives in the area, on assessment tour of the communities, were ambushed and attacked by the herdsmen who had seized the area after they chased off the indigenes.
The renewed crisis has created a huge refugee situation in the area with over 300 people displaced from the affected communities and scores injured in the bloody attack.

A source from one of the affected communities said that the Fulani invaders stormed the communities
late Saturday night, shooting sporadically and burning down houses, huts, food barn, farmland and economic trees.
The source said:

“As I speak with you, fighting is still raging in the affected communities. Although I cannot give you a precise figure of the dead, about 10 have been killed, many are missing and many others sustained injures.”

The Council Chairman, Mr. Godwin Iorsue said they were ambushed and attacked by the herdsmen as they went to assess the extent of damage that had been done by the Herdsmen.
He said: “It was only God that saved us. They were over 30 and well armed while we had only four armed police officers with us. Our cars were perforated with bullets.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu said:

“The people ran away from their communities in fear of a possible attack by Fulani herdsmen, but there were neither killing nor destruction of property in the area. “I can confirm that the DPO, the Area Commander, the Caretaker Council Chairman and selected stakeholders were attacked by suspected herdsmen when they visited to assess the situation in the area.

Police Officer Who Battered His Wife To Death For Refusing Sex Jailed For Life

PC Adrian Goldsmith was jailed for life on February 1 at Stafford Crown Court after he was found guilty of killing his wife.

Goldsmith, 50, beat wife Jill, 49, with a mallet, paint pot and heavy battery then stabbed himself to make it look like self-defence. He tried to trick colleagues and a jury into thinking she had attacked him first at their home close to Northants Police headquarters.
Goldsmith also known as Otis, was arrested after his wife was found dead in March last year. The lying policeman even made out Mrs Goldsmith had “self-harmed” in the moments before her death.
But a jury at Stafford Crown Court dismissed his fantasy defence and found him guilty of murder. Judge Paul Glenn who delivered the sentence said he must spend at least 15 years behind bars before he can be considered for parole.
The officer, who has been dismissed from the force, showed no emotion as he was sentenced.
“You set about establishing a defence in an attempt to avoid the consequences of your actions. You lied repeatedly to the police, to the doctors who were treating you and to the prison chaplain some weeks later when you were on remand. You had caused injuries to yourself to enable the defence you ran at your trial to get off the ground.”
Judge Glenn rejected Goldsmith’s claims that his wife had become violent and aggressive shortly before she died.
“Jill Goldsmith was a mother, a daughter and a friend of many. No sentence the court can impose can even begin to compensate for the loss and anguish the family are feeling. The nature of this attack was such that your victim would inevitably have suffered physically before she died. There were multiple blows, predominantly to the head. She must have been in terror as she fought for her life, as I am satisfied she did.”
Goldsmith, also known as Otis, was a serving officer at the time of the offence and had 28 years of service and a number of commendations. The officer, of Wootton Hall Park, Northampton, denied murder. According to the prosecutor, John Lloyd-Jones, QC:
“Jill was undergoing the menopause and the reduction in her sex drive annoyed and frustrated the defendant.”
The victim’s heartbroken son Charlie Bailey said in an impact statement that his mother’s death means “there is a massive part of me missing”

Drone Strike Kills Six Suspected Militants In Central Yemen

A drone strike killed six suspected al Qaeda militants in an overnight attack in eastern Yemen, tribal sources said on Thursday.

The apparent U.S. drone strike targeted a car traveling in al Rawda city in Shabwa province, a remote desert area where al Qaeda militants are believed to be operating. The province has been targeted by drone strikes this year.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has taken advantage of a conflict pitting Houthi militiamen against forces loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to grab territory and operate more openly.

Dozens of al Qaeda militants reclaimed the town of Azzan in Yemen’s Shabwa province on Monday, residents said, exploiting a security vacuum.

The United States has kept up a drone campaign against the militants, adding to near-daily air strikes by a Saudi-led Gulf Arab coalition, which intervened in the war last March to rout the Iran-backed Houthis and restore Hadi’s government.

Suspected U.S. drone strikes, which normally use Hellfire missiles, have killed some of AQAP’s top leaders, including its chief Nasser al-Wuhayshi last June.

‘Inseparable’ Couple Married for 76 Years Die within Three Days of Each Other

An inseparable couple who were married for 76 years and went everywhere together including work have died within three days of each other.

Phyllis and Miles Higgin met at a dance in 1933 when she was just 15 years old – marrying in 1939 and only separated when he was sent to war.

They even worked alongside each other running pubs and once retired would go out for walks with their dog up to three or four times a day.

Even as they fell ill they shared a double room together at their care home in Burnley, Lancs.

Their family say Phyllis died aged 97 – and Miles died just three days later aged 99.

Loved ones thought poorly Miles would go first but believe “he waited for her to die – he didn’t want to leave her alone.”

Their only child, Angela Hartley, 66, paid tribute to her parents’ wonderful love story.

Their romance began in 1933 when they met at a dance when Phyllis was just 15 years old.

Mum-of-two Angela said: “Dad always said that he knew he had met the woman he wanted to marry.”

But the pair didn’t rush into things and did not marry until 1939.

Miles was then sent to war and they were apart during his active service where he worked as a cook for the Royal Artillery, stationed in Germany and Belgium.

During that time they exchanged many-a-love letter.

They were lucky to be reunited a staggering six years later.

Retired Angela, who used to work as a supervisor in a doctors’ surgery, said: “So many young men lost their lives and did not come home.

“Dad often talked of how he was lucky to be alive. He talked of several trains that he should have gone on but didn’t and then they ended up being blown up.”

After the war Phyliss became a weaver in the mills and Miles a miner.

Only child Angela, a much wanted and longed for child, came along in 1949.

She said: “I had a happy childhood and a happy life with them. They were brilliant parents and brilliant grandparents. They were family oriented and they were very devoted.

“They did everything together, they never went anywhere on their own.”

Through her teens the family lived in pubs for around 15 years when they entered the pub trade and managed two pubs in the market town during the 1960s.

Mr and Mrs Higgin, who had two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, were popular figures, with Miles ending his working life at the former Brockhall Hospital while Mrs Higgin worked in the canteen at Great Universal Stores.

Angela said: “Both my parents suffered with dementia. My mum was admitted to hospital after a fall and it was the proviso for her release that she go into a home.

“During her hospital stay I had looked after my dad and found it very difficult to cope. He did not like being without my mum.

“It turned out there was a double room at the care home so they went there together.”

After they retired the would spend hours walking together. They had a little dog and would go out three or four times a day for walks, walking around the town.

As their health deteriorated a couple of years ago Miles became Phyllis’ carer as she suffered with dementia.

But Miles soon became ill himself with dementia and several other life debilitating ailments such as prostate cancer and chronic lung disease.

Angela said:

“I cannot fault the carers in the care home. They didn’t just care for my mum and dad, I felt they actually loved them.
“It became hard at the very end, we didn’t tell my dad that my mum was ill because we didn’t want to upset him.
“I was there during her final days and was with her as she passed away.
“It was heartbreaking telling my dad but I don’t think it sank in at first. We took him to her and he gave her a kiss.
“But it wasn’t until the next day that he asked for my mum all day long. It was so sad.
“I then stayed with my dad as his health deteriorated.
“I used to think my dad would go first because he was in worse health than my mum, but now I know that he was holding on for Mum. He didn’t want to leave her alone.
“Then when she had gone, he knew he could go too.”

A joint funeral for the couple took place on Christmas Eve.

Angela said: “It was a sad day to have a funeral on but it was a beautiful ceremony. They were both carried in vintages hearses with a procession of vintage cars, it was absolutely wonderful.

“It is so hard to lose them both together, but at the same time it is nice to know they have never been apart, they have lived long and happy lives and they lived it together.”

Joseph Edgar: It’s A Class War, Stupid!!!

Nigerians, just like when Bill Clinton told the Americans during one of his election campaigns that it was the economy, I am also now telling Nigerians that it is a class war period.

Our sufferings and frustrations are not because we belong to any section of the country or because we are Igbos as the hapless Nnamdi Kanu and his ilk would have us believe it is simply because we remain the grass under the feet of a collection of elephants in a continous struggle for power both political and economic.

Our low level of education and enlightenment continue to put us in positions of servitude to be used and misused by the elites whose membership cut across ethnic lines and are kept together by their collective greed. The Marxists pushed this position in the 70s and we refused to see it. I have been mulling these thoughts and have decided to expand on it as I now have incontrovertible evidence that our oppressors do not take their decisions based on the integrity or otherwise of the people they claim to represent but are driven by the urge for the primitive and continuos accumulation of power and wealth.

Fela
My people, I watched this documentary on Nigeria and it was very clear that the civil war, several coups and economic bastardization that we have faced since we gained independence have been direct consequences of this struggle. Let me illustrate, I have always wondered why Fela the Late genius hated with a passion the Military especially Obasanjo and Yar’dua. The link is very clear, his mother was part of the independence push in the 50s. She attended most of the talks both in UK and in Nigeria. She fought gallantly and even dethroned a sitting Oba in the wake of her powerful incursions into politics. But immediately we gained independence she went into obscurity, cheated out of the fruits of her struggle culminating in her final humiliation by the OBJ junta. This was Felas grouse, how can his mother be so treated by these ‘vagabonds’ after all she had done for this country.

So what did he do, he fell back on the masses, taking advantage of their illiteracy and a need for release as a result of their massive poverty and suffering to rail against another section of the elitist club with which he was a major member by reason of his bourgeois birth. He wore the pants, smoked the weed all in his bid to show that he belonged to the masses. He succeeded to an extent but in death, his people came for him and took him away from the masses. They rewarded his family with political appointments, immortalization of his family name and all sort. Even today the Lagos state Government has given up although on lease as I hear a major part of our national historical monument – the Lagos Prison for his family to manage and maintain through his eldest daughter who is in a relationship with a talented Architect.

MKO Abiola

People, please open your eyes to the games of our masters. Another illustration is that of MKO Abiola, the purported winner of the June 12 Elections. He always regaled us with stories of his poverty, his poor upbringing and all. He did all these to curry the support of the masses in his fight against his colleagues as he struggled for power. He was not poor even in his youth, he was educated by Felas father in a school meant for elites and their children. Obasanjo attended the same school, (hope you are seeing the link) sent abroad to study and came back to join the Lagos University Teaching hospital from where he moved to some multi national and still as a very young man bought his first company. As a bonafide member of the elitist club, his colleagues in the military gave him all sorts of contracts making him one of the richest Nigerians of all time. During this time, he made very shallow contributions to the welfare of the masses. Making gratitious donations which were in no way compared to the massive wealth he had amassed through his prostituting with the military membership of the elitist club. All these was to hoodwink us and make us believe that he was a trusted ally.

But all his charade was blown open when he was bluntly told by his colleagues that the Presidency was not ‘for sale’. However in his stubbornness he continued, relying on the bridge he had built between himself and the people to deliver the Presidency. This failed him for he underestimated the power of his cabal of wolves, his ambitions were frustrated by the military junta and he jumped to the masses for help like they always do, but we had been thoroughly weakened by his activities and that of his cohorts in the elitist movement and he invariably lost his life.

The linkages are very strong. The same people and their children have been ruling us both politically and economically. They only jump at ethnic and tribal colorations when they loose out in their intra class struggle. Falling back on the poor people to fight for them, claiming to have been cheated because they belong to a certain tribe but conveniently forgetting to state clearly that they were just poor strategist in a club the majority of us will never belong.

Odumegwu Ojukwu
Let’s look at Ojukwu the leader of the Biafran Secessionist movement. His father was at the time the richest Nigerian. Ojukwu lived a life of privilege and attended the best schools. His education gave him a little advantage over the other members who were firmly divided into three class subdivisions within the elitist movement- the political, economic and military. Ojukwu played in all the spheres and did not understand why he should be subjugated to Gowon who played in only one space and was not as educated. The progrom in the North and the continued massacre of the igbos gave him the firm vehicle and platform to carry out what to me and some scholars was a purely egoistic Crusade which led to the killing of over 2m Nigerians. After the war, what did we hear, ‘no victor no vanquished’, Ojukwu had run away with his famous Mercedes Benz to live a life of luxury in exile. This kind of camaraderie was a slap on the face of all those who had lost their lives, suffered untold suffering and saw their destinies thwarted but what would you expect after a fight between ‘two brothers’?

The competition between the elites led to massive recruitments on all sides. The North carried out their Northernization policy, using the famed Barewa College as a bastion for recruitment into the civil service and the military school in Zaria for recruitment into the military. The west embarked on theirs too sending their scions out to the UK on scholarships mostly to study Law. That is why you hear of people like Fani Kayode being a third generation Cambridge educated lawyer. The Easterners also had theirs with what was then called the Argonauts, this was the Azikiwe led young Igbo Turks who were mostly educated and trained in the U.S steeped in the radicalism of the civil rights movements. Today you will see their children and descendants still holding forte.

People like Bola Tinubu, El Rufai, Buba Marwa, Dasuki, Femi Otedola, Aliko Dangote, Keem Bello Osagie, Udo Udoma are all direct descendants and beneficiaries of the bastion of elitist control.

How do these elitists perpetuate themselves in power? Its Simple. Education and in some cases marriage. They have identified very early the importance of education hence the continuos push for their children and chosen ones to get the very best in education and tutelage. They go to the very best schools in the world and get the kind of exposure that common people’s children will never get. In the olden days it was through scholarships opened to party members children and wards, today its making sure recruitment into choice jobs was strictly based on the level and quality of education preferably overseas degrees. Tell me how will a Shomolu man’s son no matter how brilliant compete?

They have also perfected the art of intra class marriage. They marry themselves ensuring continuity and spreading of bloodlines although firmly within the elitist circle. Any attempt to marry out of this class is rebuffed and frustrated until the usurper packs his bags and runs away.

Clear illustration, look at the Management of Forte Oil and the pedigree of its Chairman you will see what we are saying. From the Group Managing Director to the Chief Financial Officer are children with strong pedigree that can be traced back two generations. They also parade very strong educational qualifications and tremendous exposure. So how will someone who went to Makoko Comprehensive and graduated from our ASUU strike bedeviled institutions compete favorably with these people. So you see, it’s a class war my people.

Femi Otedola

Otedola himself comes from a strong pedigree that could be traced to the Awoist free education and scholarship platforms of the old western region. His father being one of the wealthiest people in the land emerged as the first ‘sleeping’ Governor of Lagos State and eventually today Femi is one of the wealthiest black men in the world. He is also perpetuating the elitist lineage by sending his own kids to the very best schools in the world, recruiting only the very best that his money can afford from a very shallow pool of labour and effectively limiting the rest of us no matter where we come from Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo or Ibibio to the servitude that remains our fate.

Now that it’s rosy, we are not hearing that he is enjoying all of these because he is a Yoruba man o. By the time, he experiences a small hiccup, maybe a little intra class struggle he would fall back on his people and scream for war that these Hausa people want to take his firm because he is Yoruba.

This is where Nnamdi Kanu is getting it all wrong. The igbos are not suffering because they are Igbos, they are suffering because of their position in the societal hierarchy which decides who stays where no matter where you come from. Why do you think the South Eastern Governors will never support his position? it’s because it may cause an imbalance of power and a restriction to resources. The Igbo elites will always look at Nnamdi Kanu as an orphan and treat him as such.

People, we are all suffering. Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbira, Ijaw. A poor man is a poor man. The same sickness in Onitsha is the same sickness in Kano. Have you seen the poverty in the North? Have you been to Makoko in Lagos? Have you been to the slums of Aba? We are fighting like fools because we do not know who the enemy is.

Biafra will not put food on the tables of the poor disenfranchised Igbo man, Biafra will not give him infrastructure, send his children to school or even give him a voice. The issue can never be Biafra, the issue is elitist suppression and full control of the levers of the economy emasculating the masses throughout Nigeria.

If you doubt me, let us allow Biafra go and you will immediately see the permutation replay itself with the rebirth of these same elitist people creating a new hierarchy and entrenching the same issues that led to the creation of Biafra. Another Ilustration, IBBs rash of new states did not solve the issues but indeed created a new set of minorities still suffering from lack. I was a minority in the old Cross River State and still remain. Minority in the new Akwa Ibom State with my grandfathers house still not joined to the National grid. So what are we talking about.

The solution is education. We must break the walls of illiteracy by liberalizing education. Let’s enlighten everybody so that we all can at least see issues in its true form instead of its present coloration along ethnic and tribal lines.

It is a class war and the sooner we realize this the closer we will get to the Uhuru.

An Italian set himself on fire Monday in front of the house of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition, Italian media said.

According to AGI news agency, the Sardinian approached the gate of billionaire Berlusconi’s Villa San Martino residence near Milan before setting alight his clothes, which had been doused in a flammable liquid.

Police on duty in front of the villa rushed to his aid, putting out the flames and evacuating the man by helicopter to hospital. There was no immediate indication as to why the man, said to be in his thirties, had set himself on fire.

Pig’s Severed Head Discovered In Mosque’s Toilet At Australian University

A certain Majdi who wishes to keep his surname anonymous found a severed pig’s head in the washroom of a mosque at an Australian University. He said he was getting ready for his regular prayers around 12:30 on Sunday at University of Western Australia when he made the gruesome find which he promptly reported to the authorities.

The 31-year-old PhD student said the room, located on campus, is used mostly by Muslims for their ablutions – the traditional washing of hands and feet before performing prayers.
‘At first, I thought it was a human’s head because I didn’t have my glasses on,’ Majdi said. ‘But I had a second look and realised it was a dead pig’s head. It was shocking to see something like that, especially in a clean area. There was blood on the animal. I guess it is a message of threat as we, Muslims, do not eat pork. It was not a good start to the day.’
Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are forbidden from eating them.
According to a spokesman for the University of Western Australia, the matter has been reported to police for investigation.

The University is very saddened by this deplorable act,’ the UAW spokesman said.
‘It is concerning that people using the UWA Muslim prayer room have been targeted this way. We would like to reinforce that UWA strives to support a culturally inclusive and tolerant campus community and the University will offer help and support to our Muslim students at this time.’

On Sunday, Majdi posted shocking images of the incident on social media.
‘Everyone has been very supportive. We’ve received supportive messages around Australia from all walks of life,’ he told DMA. ‘But we need to be more alert about what has happened to protect the community. If you have any issues or misunderstandings, I’m sure the Muslim community are happy to talk to them. All Muslims are opened to discussions and move any issues forward. We’re here to build our future together. ‘

The incident comes about a year after worshippers found a pig’s head at a mosque’s courtyard in Wallsend in Newcastle’s western suburbs of NSW.

Lufthansa Passenger Tries To Open Plane Door Mid Flight

A passenger on a Lufthansa flight on its way from Frankfurt to Belgrade on Sunday was detained after he threatened to open the plane door and bring down the aircraft.

Banging on a cockpit door, the man reportedly threatened to down the Lufthansa plane as it was flying over Austria. He was quickly restrained by the crew and some passengers on-board.

“A passenger got up and tried to do something at the door, but was stopped by crew members and other passengers,” said Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels.

Flight 1406 eventually landed in Belgrade, its planned destination, where the troublemaker was handed over to local police and arrested.

The man, who turned out to be an American citizen of Jordanian descent, is currently being interrogated by the police and will spend 48 hours in detention before facing trial, according to Serbia’s public prosecutor, as reported by the Blic daily.

Milan Djukic, a Serbian handball team player who was also on the same plane, said the man had looked suspicious even before they boarded the plane.

“About halfway into the flight he tried to open a plane door, but the cabin crew stopped him,” Djukic told Blic. It was a normal door, which of course cannot be opened in-flight… it was not the cockpit door,” Bartels added.

Assistant coach Milan Mirkovic and handball player Aleksej Rastvorcev calmed the man down, while other passengers had no idea what was going on, he said, adding that two players kept an eye on the rowdy, who was in business class, for the rest of the flight.

Ghost Boats With Over 21 Bodies Appear On Japan Shores

Ghost boats washing up on the shores of Japan are causing puzzlement, with indications that they come from North Korea. Since October, 21 bodies have been found on 13 otherwise empty boats, a spokesman for the coast guard said on Thursday.

“On almost all the boats there are indications that they come from the Korean Peninsula,” the spokesman said. A report from Japan said that the boats appeared to be from North Korea, although the spokesman said this was not confirmed. Some news reports said there were clues that they were possibly operated by the military, and the causes of death was not known.

They may have been soldiers who starved or froze after being sent on fishing missions as part of the recent drive by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to find more food for the resource-strapped country, some reports said. The boats were all found in the Sea of Japan- the phenomenon is nothing new, the spokesman said

Fanatical Parents Jailed For Life After Murdering Daughter For Having Sex

A Muslim mother and father who murdered their own daughter for bringing ‘shame’ on the family because she had sex with a man they did not approve of have been caged for life in Germany.

The so-called ‘honour killing’ of Lareeb Khan, 19, was carried out by her father Azadullah, 52, who crept into her bedroom at night and strangled her while her mother Shazia, 42, looked on.

The killing was triggered because they learned she had tried to steal condoms for her illicit sex sessions with her lover. Both then disposed of the body of the ‘bright and talented’ youngster whose only crime was to fall in love with a 23-year-old man called Raheel they disapproved of.
The court heard how he crept into her room as she slept and strangled her while her mother looked on. Both then dressed dead daughter Lareeb, a dental technician, in her clothes.

They then wheeled her in the wheelchair used by Lareeb’s grandmother from their high-rise apartment to the family car, drove to a secluded embankment in their home city of Darmstadt and tipped the corpse down it.

Mother Shazia would later tell police that she did not intervene to try to save her daughter out of fear of her husband. But the court learned she was every bit as fanatical as him and was often at loggerheads with Lareeb.

Khan told police after the killing:

‘My daughter could not defend herself because one arm was pinned under the mattress and she could not speak because I was applying so much pressure. I noticed that after five minutes she was dead but I continued to press.’

He said they dumped her body and planned to tell people she had run away. But her corpse was found the next day and the parents confessed to the crime almost immediately.

Judge Wagner heard the father take all the guilt for the crime, that his wife did not have the strength to resist him. Axel Kollbach, her lawyer, asked for her to be sentenced only for help in disposing of the body, not murder, and to take into account the ‘cultural background’ to the crime.

But Judge Wagner was having none of it, stating:

She clearly is also guilty of murder. Yopu feared being shunned by the community if it got out that your daughter had slept with her boyfriend.’It was worth killing your daughter for. A woman cannot be so physically weak that she doesn’t intervene in the murder of her own daughter and instead watches it for five minutes.’You lived in two cultural worlds. It is not the case that you may not be allowed to live in your own culture. But you must also deal with our values.’

He said they could have cut their daughter off from the family if they wanted to show their disapproval of her lifestyle, not murder her.

Her father’s pathetic last words to the court on Tuesday before he was led away to begin his sentence were spoken through an interpreter. ‘I would undo it all if I could,’ he said. ‘I accept any punishment.’

Anthony Ademiluyi: The Tragic End Of Prince Audu Abubakar

The nation was jolted on November 22nd, 2015 with the death of former two time governor of Kogi State and APC candidate for the 2015 gubernatorial elections, Prince Abubakar Audu. In a string of coincidence, that day marked the 52nd anniversary of the death of the charismatic former United States President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The only difference between the two deaths was that one was violent and the other was by natural causes.

Three possible reasons were adduced for his death which was rather untimely as he was on the verge of becoming a three time governor of the confluence state, a feat only achieved by Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Yobe state.

The first reason was that he was a victim of food poisoning as he was said to have vomited blood before dying.

The second was that he was hypertensive and vomited blood before he went to cast his vote in his hometown of Ogbonicha with the doctors having to give him a blood transfusion to give him the energy for the arduous trip. He returned home and started vomiting blood all over again.

The third was that his health had been failing for quite some time and may have died from complications from some serious medical condition which was not disclosed. His death was not sudden as he had been ill for quite some time.

Chinua Achebe in his treatise, “The Problem with Nigeria” put the failure of the Nigerian State squarely on that of leadership. He was meant to have been rushed to Abuja and then flown abroad for proper medical treatment before the inevitability of death played a fast one on them. Why can’t our leaders or rulers invest massively in our healthcare system? If Kogi state had a good healthcare system, there won’t have been any need to first take him to Abuja and then use that as a transit route to fly him abroad. Why wouldn’t death come when so much man hours had been wasted? What goes around seems to be coming around for our parasitic political class who have been worse than irresponsible with our enormous human and financial resources. Nemesis seems to be on the ruthless prowl. It has now become the norm for our rulers to meet their maker abroad. Billions of dollars is been transferred to the west and even India in form of health tourism because we have failed to get our axe together in the healthcare sector. It is a monumental shame that thousands of our doctors are servicing Western and Asian hospitals while ours have been left to deteriorate into something worse than mere consulting clinics apologies to the late General Sani Abacha. Former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alameiyeseigha also died in similar circumstances when there was no functional clinic in his hometown of Amassoma. By the time, he got to Port Harcourt; he had given up the ghost. There is no consideration for the hapless common man who can’t afford the medical bills of the West or even India. The largely inept National Health Insurance Scheme does not even cover the treatment of the cancer ailment which has been ravishing Nigerians in recent times. The irony is that it is the looted funds that is been used by the inhumane political elite to fund their medical expenses abroad.

Some of late Audu’s critics opined that at 68 and having being in Lord Lugard House twice, he had no business contesting again for the coveted office. I see nothing wrong in his taking a shot at the highly exalted office. It was his constitutional right to do so and age is not a barrier to seeking to lead the people. Madiba Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s President at 76, Ronald Reagan became the oldest American President at 69, Winston Churchill was back to Downing Street for the second time at 76, Golda Meir became the first female Prime Minister of the State of Israel at 71. There was nothing wrong with his aspiration but he owed a duty to the people of Kogi State whom he wanted to serve to disclose his health challenges. As a servant-leader, they deserved to know. It would then be left to them to decide if they could take a gamble with him. There should be a constitutional provision compelling intending public office holders to make a full disclosure of their medical history to avoid this ugly reoccurrence.

His death has plunged the state into controversy. Technically, he won the elections as he had higher votes than that of the incumbent, Captain Idris Wada. However, it was declared inconclusive because the voided votes were more than that of the difference between his and that of Wada’s. This is the first time a death of this nature is happening in the country and the constitution is silent on its implication. It has propped up legal fireworks and the controversy is something that would linger for a long time to come. The National Assembly has a huge job to do to ensure this lacuna is well covered.

Whoever becomes the next governor of the state should devote a huge chunk of the resources to revamping the healthcare sector. There is no big deal in having a well-equipped hospital devoted to heart ailments for instance to avoid needless deaths. A lesson from Audu’s death which should have as a lesson to all future governors is to ensure that the masses have a better deal especially with regard to the health care sector as health is wealth. The death of two former governors because of the health sector neglect has shown that a boomerang can be the price of non challance. Two deaths from the lack of vision should be enough lessons for the present occupants of the various government houses and a lesson in the ephemeral nature of power. At the end of the day, the filthy lucre wouldn’t save the beneficiary from the harsh verdict of posterity. The fast cars, posh houses, voluptuous women, choice food and wines would fade into cruel oblivion. What would matter would be the worthy and positive legacies left behind? Health is wealth goes the age-long aphorism. It won’t be a bad idea for our leaders to etch their names in the sands of time by ensuring their led get a better deal in healthcare services and avoid the shame of having to turn into mendicants to foot their bills.

May the soul of Prince Abubakar Audu rest in perfect peace!

Israeli Police Shoot Two Palestinian Teenage Girls After They Attack Elderly Man With Scissors

Israeli police shot two Palestinian teenage girls after the pair reportedly attacked an elderly man with a pair of scissors. One of the girls was killed in the incident, while the other was injured.

The shocking CCTV footage appears to show the girls, aged 14 and 16, pulling scissors out of their schoolbags before waving the blades around in the air.

They then advance towards the elderly onlooker, thought to be 70-years-old. Seconds later, a police officer is seen confronting one of the girls and shooting her with his pistol.

Attack: The girls appear to pull scissors out of their schoolbags

Shooting: An officer shot both of the girls, killing one

He then turns his attention to the other girl and shoots her several times, even after she was lying motionless on the ground.

It is believed the attack took place outside Mahne Yehuda, a busy outdoor market in central Jerusalem.

A 27-year-old Israeli security guard was taken to hospital after the event.

Shooting: An officer shot both of the girls, killing one

Deadly: Police are believed to have shot one of the girls multiple times after the attack

He is thought to have suffered cuts on his hand from bullet shrapnel.

Questions are now being raised over the excessive force used by police.

Security forces in the area have been on high alert after a spate of stabbings recently. Eighty-six Palestinians have been killed in a wave of recent violence since October 1.

Wanted Paris Jihadist Changed His Mind As Suicide Bomb Belt Is Found In Paris Dustbin

A suicide bomber’s explosive belt – containing a volatile chemical nicknamed ‘Mother of Satan’ for the ease at which it is detonated – was tonight found by police dumped in the southern Paris suburb where terrorist fugitive Salah Abdeslam escaped the city.

The 26-year-old fled the bloodbath that left 130 dead on November 13th, rather than blowing himself up. Tonight’s find in a dustbin in Montrouge, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, is hugely significant because it supports the theory that Abdeslam abandoned his mission.

Police said the explosive belt was found in the place where Abdeslam’s mobile phone was operating on the day of the Paris attacks.

According to NBC News, a spokesperson for the prosecutors’ office confirmed a cell phone had also been found near the belt.

Investigators believe the jihadist gang that carried out eight coordinated attacks planned to strike another target but Abdeslam changed plans at the last minute.

Abdeslam’s brother, Brahim Abdeslam, blew himself up in a cafe near the Place de la Nation, but he chose to escape.

Abdeslam is thought to have driven the three Stade de France bombers to the stadium before moving on to the 18th arrondissement.Abdeslam, a French national, infamously hired the vehicles and hotel rooms used in the attacks. The next day he and two accomplices were stopped by a traffic patrol close to the Belgium border but then let go.

Iraqi Security Forces Discover 18 Children’s Dolls Filled With Explosives

A plan to target children from Shia community was thankfully foiled by Iraqi security forces as 18 booby-trapped dolls which were part of an ISIS bomb plot against Shia pilgrims were reportedly seized. Security forces discovered the booby-trapped bombs in al-Husseiniya-a predomnantly Shiite suburb in northeastern Baghdad.

18 explosives which were hidden inside the hollow bodies of the doll toys, before dressing them in doll clothes were later dismantled and destroyed. According to Press TV, the terror group ISIS had planed to scatter the doll-bombs on the road between Baghdad and Karbala; the same route which will be used by millions of Shia Muslims during their annual pilgrimage for Arbaeen next month. Arbaeen, a Shia religious observation that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura to commemorate the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, will be held on December 3.

Woman Who Kept Mother’s Corpse For A Year In Order To Claim Benefits Jailed For Six Months

More than a year after her mother, Hope Ruller died, Mary Kersting kept the decomposing body of the 93-year-old woman in her flat in Gloversville, Upstate New York and stole more than $13,000 (£8,600) in social security checks belonging to Hope Ruller.
Kersting, who lied to her niece about her mother still being alive, claimed she couldn’t afford to have her mother buried.

Man Arrested With 21 Female Genitalia In His Freezer Blames It On His Wife

A Danish gun shop owner who was arrested after 21 pieces of female genitalia were found in his freezer, has blamed it on his wife..
The man, identified as 63-year-old Peter Frederiksen, will appear on charges of sexual assault and violation of female genitals in a court in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
And he claims that his estranged wife, 28, wanted to sell the body parts in Lesotho – the tiny nation surrounded by South Africa, where he owns another gun shop.

He was arrested after his wife, who is from Lesotho, told police he drugged her before carrying out the procedure on her.But Frederiksen claims he had no idea what was in the freezer.

He told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet:

“It is totally unfounded. It is my wife who uses the stuff and not me.”

He claims they are getting divorced.
When asked if he knew about the macabre haul, he said:

“No, no, no.”I told her many times that she had to pick up the stuff in the refrigerator.”

Cops also found pictures of female genital mutilation (FGM) at the property. He says he took the pictures in Lesotho, but he has not committed FGM – in South Africa.

I have never made any circumcision of any women here in South Africa,I myself have been involved in the things over in Lesotho.I have been allowed to take a lot of pictures in Lesotho in the mountains, where they circumcise women.”

Police are investigating who the other 20 body parts belong to.
Masilela Langa, a police spokesman, told Netwerk24:

“At this stage we do not know how many women there are, as there are many, many photos.
“We are engaged in research and questioning the man. It is as if he knew his victims, and knew where to look for them.”

Female Zookeeper Killed By A Tiger In New Zealand

Samantha Kudeweh (left) was on Sunday, September 20 attacked by one of Hamilton Zoo’s Sumatran tigers in New Zealand. According to local reports, the tiger attacked the 43-year-old mother of two while the animal’s enclosure was being cleaned. The Zoo will be closed until Thursday Sept. 24th.

A staff confirmed that the tiger will not be put down following the tragedy.

Lance Vervoort, Hamilton City Council’s General Manager Community, says although Samantha’s death is a tragedy for the wider zoo family and international wildlife conservation community, senior zoo staff have ruled out euthanizing Oz.

“We’re aware there is a lot of interest and speculation around how we manage Oz now, and I want to assure the public and zoo supporters that he will not be put down,” Mr Vervoort says. “

Although there is an inherent risk for zoo professionals who manage big cats like Oz, there is no wider ongoing risk. There is no reason for us to put Oz down.” Mr Vervoort says the decision not to euthanize Oz was made by zoo senior staff today. They have advised the Ministry for Primary Industries – the Government agency responsible for overseeing zoo and wildlife park operations in New Zealand – of this.

“This is our call, and the decision on Oz rested solely with us. Oz is a significant animal for his species. He is the father of our two cubs, and he is vital to the ongoing breeding programme to conserve this rare species.”

Mr Vervoort says the widely held view among zoo professionals was that Oz’s attack on Samantha was in line with his natural instincts. Hamilton Zoo will reopen on Thursday, and Mr Vervoort says some of the zoo’s five Sumatran tigers will be on display. No decision has been made on whether visitors to the zoo will be able to see Oz. Mr Vervoort says the zoo’s popular Tiger Talks, Eye 2 Eye and Face 2 Face encounters for all species have been suspended until further notice to allow zoo staff time and space to grieve for their friend and colleague.

Obasanjo Blames Mediterranean Deaths On Fall Of Gaddafi

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the leadership of African Union, AU, to evolve a policy that will stamp out growing spate of youths from the continent, migrating to Europe through the Mediterranean in search of greener pasture.

The former president made the call in a statement he issued yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. He emphasised that the current outflow of Africans into Europe was a direct consequence of lack of effective governance in some African countries as precipitated by the direct action of Western powers.

Obasanjo, who expressed sadness over the current wave of deaths and untold hardships which African youths experienced in their desperate move to travel to Europe, also charged the international community, particularly the African leaders to take a look at the development with a view to finding solutions to the menace.

Caitlyn Jenner To Be Charged With Manslaughter Next Week

According to new reports by DailyMail, Caitlyn Jenner could be charged with vehicular manslaughter as early as next week in connection to a February crash in Malibu, California that killed one person.

Speaking on the case, the lead detective told KABC that they plan to turn the results of the investigation over to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office next week, and will recommend Jenner be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. It will be up to the DA’s office whether to charge Jenner with the crime.

Follow the jump to see the full story + how much time Caitlyn may be facing:

The detective claims that the recommendation for the charge is based on how fast Jenner was going at the time of the crash, a speed they believe was unsafe. One woman was killed and seven others injured when Jenner rear-ended a Lexus on February 7.

A Toyota Prius had come to a stop in the intersection for unknown reasons, and then Jenner slammed into the Lexus waiting to move behind the Prius. At the time, Jenner was driving a Cadillac Escalade towing a trailer, and the impact of her SUV on the Lexus forced the car into southbound traffic where it collided head on with a Hummer. The driver of the Lexus, Kimberly Howe, was killed.

In the aftermath of the crash, Howe’s stepchildren filed a lawsuit against Jenner, saying she was driving at an unsafe speed and that her negligence cause the 69-year-old’s death. When interviewed by police after the crash, Jenner told them that she was being followed by paparazzi but was not trying to evade them. There were also reports that Jenner was on her phone at the time of the crash, something her lawyer has denied.

In California, the maximum sentence for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter is one year in jail.

DSS Mission To Arrest Suspect In Edo Ends In Tragedy

A midnight mission by the Department of Security Service(DSS) operatives to arrest one Omozokpia, over an alleged fraud, has ended up in tragedy in Ekpoma, Edo State, with the killing of his father, Christopher Irabor, who was a potter in the School of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma,

According to Sun ,the victim was allegedly shot inside his room when the officials stormed his residence at Uwene quarters of Illeh village in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government.
The operatives, who came from Benin City, were on the trail of Omozokpia.
According to Christopher’s widow, Faith, the DSS men came to their house at about 12 midnight and
forced everybody outside.

She sad her husband held the door to their room to prevent the security operatives from gaining entry, but they were overpowered.

Mrs Irabor narrated that one of the DSS officials shoved a gun into her husband and she heard a loud bang after which her husband fell in a pool of blood.
She said the operatives shot sporadically and later took away her younger son because Omozokpia, the first son they came for, was not at home.

However, a DSS operative who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the late potter was shot because he attempted to disarm one of them, adding that the victim first hit one of the men with a cutlass before struggling the gun with him.
He said they got to the residence with the suspect’s friend and when the friend knocked, occupants of the building refused to open the door.
According to him, they broke in and started assembling occupants in the house, but those in a particular room refused to come out, explaining that it was when they attempted to break into the room that the landlord used a cutlass on one of them and attempted to collect the gun, prompting then to shoot.

Police Arrest Governor Aregbesola’s Aide Over Girlfriend’s Death

A Special Adviser to Osun State Governor, Mr Bode Olugbore, has been arrested by the police over the death of his girlfriend, Miss Kemi Arobieke.

A Punch correspondent gathered that Kemi, a graduate of the Lagos State University, visited Bode in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Thursday, August 6, all the way from Lagos and promised to return on Saturday.

The deceased’s elder brother, Ayo, who confirmed the death of his sister to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday, said Kemi had known Olugbore for about four years, but the family did not know about their relationship.

The brother of the deceased said he, Kemi and Bode were members of the same church in Lagos adding that her sister said the suspect had been separated from his wife.

He said, “My sister travelled to Osogbo and she was supposed to return to Lagos on Saturday, but we got a call from the police that she was involved in an accident and it was very serious.

“We got to Osogbo but the police prevented us from seeing her only to be told that she was electrocuted. She was said to have been electrocuted by a Binatone fan, but it is unbelievable.

“The current in a fan is not enough to kill, except one has direct contact with a live wire. The mark on her body suggests something contrary.”

He said he saw Bode at the State Criminal Investigation Department on two occasions he went to the place.

The deceased’s brother said the police had done the autopsy, but the family was still waiting for the police to give them the result.

He said, ” We were told that Bode’s family will have to be present before they would give us the result.”

The governor’s media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, when contacted declined to comment on the matter.

He said, ” It’s a police matter. You can get accurate information about whatever happened from the police.”

Also, efforts to speak to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Folasade Odoro, proved abortive on the matter as calls put across to her telephone were picked but she refused to talk.

After many calls to her other telephone, a male voice answered the call and told our correspondent that the PPRO was not in the office but left her phone for charging. He promised that the PPRO would call back when she returned, but she did not.

Also, a text message sent to inquire about the case was not replied to as of the time of filing this report.

Massive Blasts Rock Chinese City Of Tianjin; 44 Dead, Hundreds Injured

Two huge explosions tore through an industrial area where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin, killing at least 44 people, including at least a dozen fire fighters, officials and state media said on Thursday.

At least 520 people were injured, more than 60 of them seriously, the Tianjin government said on its Weibo microblog, and the People’s Daily newspaper said four fires were still burning.

Wednesday night’s blasts, so large that they were seen by satellites in space, sent shockwaves through apartment blocks kilometres away in the port city of 15 million people. Internet videos showed fireballs shooting into the sky and the U.S. Geological Survey registered the blasts as seismic events.

Vast areas of the port – the 10th largest in the world – were devastated, crumpled shipping containers were thrown around like match sticks, hundreds of new cars were torched and port buildings left as burnt-out shells, Reuters witnesses said.

“I was sleeping when our windows and doors suddenly shook as we heard explosions outside. I first thought it was an earthquake,” Guan Xiang, who lives 7 km (4 miles) away from the explosion site, told Reuters by telephone.

Guan, 24, said he saw flames and a mushroom cloud in the sky as he and other residents scrambled to get out of the building.

Tianjin authorities said 12 firefighters were among the 44 killed.

The cause of the blasts was unknown but industrial accidents are not uncommon in China following three decades of breakneck economic growth. A blast at an auto parts factory in eastern China killed 75 people a year ago when a room filled with metal dust exploded.

The state-run Beijing News earlier cited Tianjin fire authorities as saying they had lost contact with 36 firefighters, and that another 33 were among the hundreds of people being treated in nearby hospitals.

The official Xinhua news agency said 1,000 firefighters and more than 140 fire engines were struggling to contain a blaze in a warehouse that contained “dangerous goods”.

“The volatility of the goods means the fire is especially unpredictable and dangerous to approach,” Xinhua said.

Several fire trucks had been destroyed and nearby firefighters wept as they worked to extinguish flames, the Beijing News reported.

President Xi Jinping demanded that authorities “make full effort to rescue and treat the injured and ensure the safety of people and their property”.

Xi said in a statement carried by official media that those responsible should be “severely handled”.

City officials had met recently with companies to discuss tightening safety standards on the handling of dangerous chemicals. The Tianjin Administration of Work Safety posted a notice about the meeting with companies at the port on its website a week ago.

TOXIC SMOKE

Anxious residents rushed to hospitals to seek news about injured loved ones. Dozens of police guarded the entrance of the TEDA hospital, a Reuters witness said.

Pictures on Chinese media websites showed residents and workers, some bleeding, fleeing their homes. Xinhua said people had been hurt by broken glass and other flying debris.

Healthy Nurse Decides To Die At 75 Rather Than Grow Old

A healthy former nurse decided to end her life than grow old and be a burden to her family.
Gill Pharaoh, 75, was not suffering from a terminal disease or depression .She travelled to the Lifecircle clinic in Basel, Switzerland where Dr Erika Preisig assisted in her suicide on July 21st.

In a blog post she wrote just days before her journey to Switzerland, she explained the events that led up to her decision to end her life.

“Until I was seventy I was very fit and able to fully participate in any activity I wanted to do. I felt I could still be busy and useful and fairly productive. “Then I had a severe attack of Shingles and it all changed. At seventy five I am told I look ok and I take no medication. However, I feel my life is complete and I am ready to die. My family are well
and happy –their lives are full and busy. I can no longer walk the distances I used to enjoy so the happy hours spent exploring the streets of London are just a memory now.”There is nowhere I want to visit enough to spend hours in an aeroplane or airport,” she wrote.

She insisted she was not depressed and enjoyed her life day to day. But she said she did not want to deteriorate to the stage where she needed a lot of help.
She didn’t want to become a burden to her children, or have a professional carer, whom she said are frequently “abused, poorly paid, poorly trained, with no prospects of developing a career.”
Her family, including her two children, Caron and Mark, struggled to cope with her decision.

“I have had to make my exit while I am in my right mind and capable of doing so without too much assistance, because I am afraid of compromising the people around me whom I love.I have had to do this outside my home, and without telling too many people for the same reason. I have written my goodbyes and tidied my life and hope I have managed to exit as unobtrusively as possible. I have always held a donor card but that will be redundant now.”
“If I could have booked my death quite openly, I could have had a party before I died, in the way that people have done, and continue to do, in Switzerland and other places.
“In which case, perhaps any of my body parts that could be reused could be collected immediately. I could also be sure that I will never be an old lady blocking beds in a hospital ward. This would save the NHS a fortune.”

She was accompanied to the Swiss clinic by her husband, John, who she described as the “love of her life”.
She spent her final night alive wandering through the old part of Basel, before sharing a meal on the banks of the Rhine.

John told the Sunday Times: “The whole evening was very tranquil and enjoyable. I think it is what we both wanted. Gill had been thinking about it for years and I had no intention of spoiling it by getting emotional and heavy.”

Police Arrest Fed Poly Oko Graduate For Beheading Friend in A’Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Mr. Stephen Onona, in connection with the death of his close friend and employee, Mr. Daniel Solomon.

Onona is from Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State while Solomon was from Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom State.

Onona was said to be an employee of Africana First Publisher, Uyo, where he worked for four years.

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Gabriel Achong, said Onona invited
Solomon, who worked for him as a professional barber, to his house over a misunderstanding bordering on about N1m.

He stated that as soon as they had discussed the issue, Solomon went to bed while Onona took up a machete and cut off Solomon’s head before cutting other parts of the body in pieces.

The CP added:

“After cutting off Solomon’s head, he removed his two arms and laps, put them into his bag and threw them somewhere. He put the remaining parts of the body in ‘Ghana Must Go’ and dumped them in the gutter. He put Solomon’s head in the dustbin and dumped it in the bush.

When I got the news on Tuesday morning that somebody was killed and thrown into a gutter, I swung into action. I did every possible to get him arrested. I had to locate the owner of the house where the murderer lived.

We got the landlord and asked whom he gave the house to; and he disclosed the guy’s identity to us. And with the help of tracking device, we called the gentleman (Onona), and he told us that he was in Onitsha.

We tracked his number and in the evening on Tuesday, he was arrested in a street here in Uyo. He led the police to where he dumped all the body parts of Solomon. He has some friends and we used these friends number to get to him.”

Achong stated that when he reported the matter to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, he said the IGP wondered if Onona was of a sound mind.

He added that in the course of his interaction with Onona, he discovered that the suspect was of a sound mind, saying nothing was wrong with him.

Onona admitted to committing the crime, saying he was provoked because Solomon could not tell him how he had spent the N750,000  he gave him to set up the barbing business.

He said:

“I am 32 years old and working here with Africana First Publisher. I am in the police net because of my boy, Bassey Solomon. He took my money, N750,000, which I obtained from a bank for him to set up barbing business.

The barbing saloon was at 55, Itu Road. I am angry with him to the extent of carrying machete and killing him.”

Incredible! Man Cuts Off Wife’s Hand Over Adultery Allegations

Man, identified as Jacob Nwachukwu from Abala in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, has cut off his wife’s left hand over allegation of infidelity. The man’s wife, Mrs Nwadiokeonu Nwachukwu, is now at a hospital in Aba, while her severed hand had been taken to her husband’s village at Abala for burial.

The incident happened, Monday, at Ogbor Hill Area of Aba, where the woman had lived for years, while the husband lived at their Abala village.

A female co-tenant of Mrs Nwachukwu, who craved anonymity, told Vanguard that the couple had lived in the city for years before the husband lost his job and had to relocate to the village, leaving his wife, a trader, in the city.

She said: “The couple had always quarrelled any time the man visited his wife in the city, to the extent that all the tenants are aware and intervened in their quarrels.”

The man was said to have visited the wife on the day and during their usual quarrel, brought out a machete, cut off the wife’s hand and left with it to the village, while neighbours rushed her to the hospital.

It was gathered that Mr. Nwachukwu’s intention was to kill his wife with the machete but missed the target as the woman was said to have used the severed hand to defend herself.

The suspected lover of the woman is said to be on the run, while her landlord reported the incident to a police station close to the hospital along Ogbor Hill, where the woman is currently on admission.

Area Commander, Aba Police Command, Mr. Peter Wabara, in a response to a text message, said the incident was yet to be reported to him.

However, a police officer at Ogbor Hill Police Station, confirmed the incident and said investigation into the matter had commenced.

Man Dies After Drinking 20 Sachets Of Gin In N500 Bet

The deceased, said to be a barber, is married with a child and lived along Ngwa Road area of Aba, Abia State.

An eyewitness said the deceased had on the fateful day, gone to a nearby local shop situated within the area to take a sachet of his usual brand of gin and boosted to the shop owner that he could finish
20 sachets of the drink.

This was said to have led to an argument between the deceased and the shop owner and other customers in the shop that morning.
The argument, it was learned, reached a stage where the deceased deposited N500 and the shop owner also placed her own N500 in a bet.
The deceased was then provided with the sachet drinks for consumption.

The deceased was said to have left his barbing salon earlier that day to his house when he started feeling some pains in his stomach and asked his wife to put on their sitting room ceiling fan and sat directly beneath it.
When his condition got worse, his wife asked him what the problem was.
A source said the deceased told his wife he was okay, but just needed rest.

2 Teenagers Stab Their Parents And 3 Siblings To Death

2 Oklahoma teenagers, 18 year old Robert Bever and his 16-year-old brother, Michael Bever, have been accused of stabbing and killing 5 family members.

They were arrested after their 13-year-old sister who survived the attack identified them as the attackers in the Wednesday night massacre in Broken Arrow, OK.
The news comes as it was revealed the one of the victims, 12-year-old Daniel, had called 911 just before dying alongside his parents, David, 52, and April, 44, and siblings Christopher, 7, and Victoria, 5.
Although police originally said a 911 call from the home was silent, resulting in a welfare check, it has now been revealed in documents filed to support the teenager’s arrest that a caller from the home was able to tell police that ‘their brother was attacking their family’.
The family were found dead at 11.30pm on Wednesday in their luxurious house in Broken Arrow, southeast of Tulsa.
Crystal Bever, 13, is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Her two-year-old sister, Autumn Bever, was discovered unharmed and is in state custody. She was allegedly born prematurely and her parents had recently started a nonprofit to help other families who have premature children.

Investigators said a 12-year-old male called 911 at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday and said they needed help because their brother was attacking the family. When officers arrived to the 700 block of Magnolia Court, they found blood on the porch and could hear a faint female voice inside asking for help.

When they made their way inside to the gruesome scene, they found the girl, who had been stabbed multiple times, the document says. The 12-year-old who called 911 was dead, they said.

“The young girl was still alive and made statements to the officers that her brothers [were] responsible for attacking her and her family,” the arrest report says.

As reported earlier, police and a K9 officer were able to track down Bever and his 16-year-old brother in a wooded area behind the home, and the new report reveals they found fresh footprints in the back yard. The two were arrested and placed in the Broken Arrow city jail then transferred to the Tulsa County Jail on Friday.

Bever was booked on five first-degree murder complaints and one count of aggravated domestic assault and battery with a deadly weapon. In his mugshot, Bever appears to have blood splatters and mud on his face, and BAPD Cpl. Leon Calhoun said that many of the officers who have been involved in the investigation are disturbed by his demeanor.

“He has a smirk on his face …I don’t know if there’s any remorse whatsoever based on that picture,” Calhoun said of Robert Bever’s first mugshot. A second mugshot was taken once he was transferred to Tulsa County.

At this time, the youngest brother’s name has not been made public in any news releases sent out by Broken Arrow police. A Tulsa County jailer, however, identified him to News On 9 as Michael Bever.

The 13-year-old girl survived surgery and is said to be stable at a local hospital.

Police said on Thursday that multiple knives and a hatchet were found in the home and are believed to be the murder weapons.

Kim Kardashian Slams The Cops, Accuses Them Of Covering Up Murder

Kim Kardashian has joined the bevy of celebrities who are adding their voices to the campaign on twitter, demanding answers to the bizarre story of the 28 year old Chicago woman Sandra Bland who died in jail after she was taken into police custody.

Kim took to her page hours ago to voice her own concerns, and she agreed, too, alongside many other voices, that there seems to be a ‘massive cover up’ in the police reports.

See what she wrote below:

Sandra Bland’s death was ruled by prosecutors as suicide by hanging, but many have refuted that report and even analysed the first mugshot released by the police; there is a raging unanimous agreement among many on social media who believe that the mugshot was taken after Bland was dead. They believe that the case is race related and that the police brutally murdered Bland because she was black.

Girl Accidentally Kills Herself By Overdosing On Paracetamol

Georgia Littlewood, 17 and pictured above, took more than the recommended dose of paracetamol to cure a stomach ache.  Unaware of the dose’s deadly consequences, she went to stay with her boyfriend.

But her condition suddenly deteriorated and she was rushed into hospital with severe liver damage. She died the following day.

The cause of death was acute liver failure due to paracetamol toxicity.

Her family is now calling for tougher restrictions on the drug. Speaking at an inquest into her death, Georgia’s family condemned the ease with you can buy paracetamol after a coroner said it was a “readily available medication across the counter which can be extremely dangerous.”

In a statement they said:

“You can buy paracetamol at 19p a packet in supermarkets – yet you should only be able to buy it from a pharmacist who tells you of the dangers. You should not be able to go into the shop with no one giving any advice.”

Tragedy struck on March 28 this year when Georgia woke up at 6.30am complaining of a stomach ache. She had taken an administration apprenticeship in September 2014 but had been complaining of headaches after long hours in front of a computer at her desk.

She called in sick at work and went back to bed.

But later her mother Joanne Littlewood received a text from her daughter saying she was going to stay over with her boyfriend Tom Keen. The couple watched television and went out to get a milk shake and pizza.

At 2am the next morning, Georgia was heard being sick in the bathroom.

Mr Keen took her back to her parent’s house where they rang an ambulance when she failed to recognise her mother.

At Huddersfield Royal Infirmary she told doctors she had taken paracetamol tablets but had not done so with any intention of causing herself harm.

She was transferred to St James’ Hospital in Leeds and was put down for a liver transplant but she sadly deteriorated, leaving doctors unable to reverse the damage done to her liver.

She died at 9pm on March 30 in the intensive care unit. Mrs Littlewood said:

“On the day she was taken into hospital she was mumbling and didn’t know who I was. I knew something was wrong straight away. I believe the overdose was a complete accident. She was a very happy girl making plans to go on holiday in July.

I don’t think she would have known the correct doses for taking paracetamol and would have taken them for a headache. She would not have known the affect it would have had on her.”

Mr Keen said:

“She was not making any sense, she was talking but not making sense. At first I thought she was having me on. I realised something wasn’t right. I woke my house mate up and we took her home. When we got to her house we got to the door and her dad opened. He asked if she had taken anything. I confirmed she had not. She hadn’t drunk any alcohol either. I went back home.

Her mum rang later and said the ambulance had been called and she had been taken to hospital. I did not see her take any paracetamol nor any other medication and she did not say she had done so. No medication had gone missing.”

Assistant coroner Mary Burke recorded a conclusion of accidental death and said:

“It seems likely to me that Georgia was not fully away of the apparent toxic effect of paracetamol which can develop over a relatively short period of time. I do not believe it was an intentional act on Georgia’s part to harm herself and conclude a result of ‘accident.’

It is important to use these circumstances to highlight to members of the public the risk that are present. Paracetamol is a readily available medication across the counter but can be extremely dangerous. There are doses as identified in place for a reason. If everyone does not comply with that there can be tragic circumstances evident in this case. If you take more than the recommended dose the body cannot cope with that.”

Police Nab 2 For Murder Of APC Chieftain In Lagos

The Homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspects as it commenced investigation into the killing of an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Salawe Daramola.

The command’s spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Nwosu, who did not mention if the two suspects were politicians, however, said they were arrested during the Sallah celebration in different parts of the state.

He disclosed that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.

The two gunmen who came on a motorcycle on Thursday evening shot dead Daramola, a chieftain of APC in Ward B in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.

It was learnt that the assailants stormed the deceased’s residence at K Close, 3rd Avenue, FESTAC Town and shot him at close range three times.

The suspects allegedly arrived the place at about 5.30 p.m. to perpetrate the dastardly act.

Nwosu said the suspects were first interrogated by the Area E Commander, ACP Frank Mba to ascertain their level of involvement, and from there they were allegedly indicted before being taken to SCID. (NAN)

Woman Took Explicit Photos Of Her Lover Before She Stabbed Him To Death In The Shower

The final moments of Travis Alexander’s life were nothing short of horrific. He was stabbed multiple times and almost decapitated before being shot and left for dead in his shower. Travis’s flat was covered in blood where his body had been dragged and his killer had washed their bloodied hands.

Crime scene photos were shocking, but they were nothing compared to the chilling images found on a digital camera at the scene.

Last photo of Travis before he was killed

Investigators retrieved deleted photos that showed Travis alive in the shower, posing for the camera as water cascaded over him. Then, in a final photo, the water turned red with blood as his killer accidentally took a snapshot of his murder.

Handsome Travis Alexander, 30, was a marketing salesman who lived in Mesa, Arizona. He was a practising Mormon and a charismatic motivational speaker.

In September 2006, Travis met Jodi Arias, 27, at a conference in Las Vegas. She was a saleswoman living in California and had a passion for photography.

The pair began an intense long-distance relationship, exchanging over 80,000 emails and speaking on the phone for hours. Jodi was so smitten she joined the Mormon faith, but after just five months, their relationship hit the rocks. Travis told Jodi it was just physical and ended it.
Jodi was devastated and moved to Travis’s hometown of Mesa to work as a waitress. Travis told his family that she was stalking him – even claiming she’d crawled through a dog flap, so she could sleep on his sofa. But he continued to secretly have sex with her.
While Jodi thought they were back on track, Travis still refused to commit and, after two years, she moved back to California to live with her grandparents. But it wasn’t over.

A deadly obsession

Two months later, Jodi hired a car and drove to Mesa to see Travis. She filled
up petrol cans for the journey so she wouldn’t have to stop, and turned off her phone. On 4 June 2008, the estranged couple had sex one last time and took explicit photos of each other.
A few days later, Travis’s worried work colleagues couldn’t contact him. Friends went to his flat and discovered the bloody scene. Travis was slumped dead in the bottom of his shower with his throat deeply sliced from ear to ear and a gunshot wound to the head. There were over 27 stab wounds on his body.

Travis had been shot with a 25-calibre gun – the same type of gun that had been stolen from Jodi’s grandparents in a mysterious burglary a few months earlier.
The most disturbing discovery was a damaged digital camera in the washing machine, along with bloodied clothes that had been put through a wash. Police recovered deleted sexual images of Jodi and Travis.

Jodi changed her appearance and has courted the limelight since

Graphic shots

There was a picture of Travis alive and wet in the shower – then another photo that showed the back of Travis’s head, with his arm raised and blood tricking down his neck. Police believed it had been taken accidently as Travis was being killed.
Jodi was interrogated. At first she denied even being at Travis’s home, but when confronted with evidence she changed her story. She claimed two intruders had broken in, murdered Travis and attacked her. It was unlikely.

Finally Jodi broke down, saying she was a victim of domestic violence and that night Travis had violently attacked her. “It was self defence,” she sobbed. When police pressed for details, Jodi’s story was inconsistent and when left alone, she giggled and even did a headstand. She was charged with murder.

14 Killed In Twin Suicide Bombings By Boko Haram In Cameroon

Two bombs planted by suspected Boko Haram militants in Fotokol, a northern town in Cameroon, went off killing at least 15 people on Sunday. The first explosion went off inside a bar near a Cameroon special forces camp just after sundown as people were breaking the Ramadan fast. The second explosion followed as soldiers approached the bar. According to Colonel Didier Badjeck, military spokesman, three Chadian soldiers were among those killed.

South Korea Says Kim Jong Un Has Executed 70 Officials In ‘Reign Of Terror’

Young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has executed 70 officials since taking power in late 2011 in a “reign of terror” that far exceeds the bloodshed of his dictator father’s early rule, South Korean officials said Thursday.

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, at a forum in Seoul, compared Kim Jong Un’s 70 executions with those of his late father, Kim Jong Il, who he said executed about 10 officials during his first years in power.

An official from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, who refused to be named, citing office rules, confirmed that the spy agency believes the younger Kim has executed about 70 officials but
wouldn’t reveal how it obtained the information.

Yun also said that the younger Kim’s “reign of terror affects significantly” North Koreans working overseas by inspiring them to defect to the South, but he also didn’t reveal how he got the details.

North Korea, an authoritarian nation ruled by the Kim family since its founding in 1948, is secretive about its government’s inner workings, and information collected by outsiders is often impossible to confirm.

High-level government purges have a long history in North Korea.

To strengthen his power, Kim Jong Un’s grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, removed pro-Soviet and pro-Chinese factions within the senior leadership in the years after the 1950-53 Korean War. The high-ranking victims included Pak Hon Yong, formerly the vice chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea and the country’s foreign minister, who was executed in 1955 after being accused of spying for the United States.

Kim Jong Un has also removed key members of the old guard through a series of purges since taking over after the death of Kim Jong Il. The most spectacular purge to date was the 2013 execution of his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, for alleged treason. Jang was married to Kim Jong Il’s sister and was once considered the second most powerful man in North Korea.

South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers in May that Kim ordered his then-defense chief Hyon Yong Chol executed with an anti-aircraft gun for complaining about the young ruler, talking back to him and sleeping during a meeting.

Experts say Kim could be using fear to solidify his leadership, but those efforts could fail if he doesn’t improve the country’s shattered economy.

TB Joshua’s Synagogue Church Rejects Coroner’s Verdict; Says it’s Unreasonable, One-sided & Biased

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SYNAGOGUE, CHURCH OF ALL NATIONS IN RESPECT OF THE VERDICT GIVEN BY THE LAGOS CORONER’S COURT RELATING TO THE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 12TH 2014

The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) rejects the verdict of the coroner on the grounds that it is unreasonable, one-sided and biased. The church maintains its stand that the incident was as a result of sabotage.

From the verdict given today, we would like the public to take note of the following:

There was no finding that the church engaged the services of unqualified or incompetent
professionals for the construction of the building.
There was no finding that the church procured substandard materials for the construction of the building, as confirmed by officials of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) who gave evidence at the coroner and certified the materials used were all approved and of good quality.
There was evidence that the church had started processing the relevant building approval before the incident, which had been approved and assessed for payment by the appropriate government bodies.
There was no finding that connected the incident with the lack of a building permit.
There was no finding that church members prevented the statutory responders from carrying out their rescue duties.
The church disagrees most vehemently with the finding that the incident was due to structural failure.

The church considers it strange that the coroner did not refer in its verdict to the evidence of the COREN-registered structural engineer and contractor used by the church nor did it evaluate the conflicting evidence given by civil and structural engineers as to whether or not the incident was as a result of structural failure.

It was a one-sided verdict which left many issues unaddressed and questions unanswered.

The church disagrees with the findings concerning the aircraft that hovered over the six-storey building because there was evidence before the court that the incident could have been brought about by external forces such as controlled demolition or an explosion.

The verdict did not even refer to the CCTV footage which showed the 6-storey building falling in less than 4 seconds – a manner consistent with controlled or externally induced demolition – nor did it refer to the interim report and investigation by the Nigerian police force which pointed to sabotage by external forces.

The church also disagrees with the finding that foundation failure was a remote cause because that is contrary to the overwhelming expert evidence of the structural engineers invited to the coroner who eliminated foundation failure as a possible cause.

The recommendation for the investigation and prosecution of the contractors and structural engineers used by the church for criminal negligence is premature because it gives the impression the coroner has found them guilty when a coroner is not allowed in law to make any finding of civil or criminal liability against anybody.

The recommendation for the investigation of The SCOAN for not possessing the relevant building permits is unwarranted because it did not take into account the evidence that the church had started processing the relevant building approval before the incident. As a matter of fact, the amount payable for the processing had already been assessed by the appropriate government agencies.

The recommendation that statutory responders should be adequately equipped was informed by the fact that the statutory responders who carried out rescue operations in this case were ill-equipped and ill-trained, and that it was the church that mobilised human and material resources to ensure a successful rescue operation.

Finally, the coroner recognised that the conduct of the investigation of the incident was compromised by the failure of the appropriate government agencies to take necessary steps to secure and preserve the scene of the incident, which calls into question the integrity and reliability of the entire investigation.

This is a statement from Barr. Olalekan Ojo, legal counsel to The SCOAN.
We repeat: No matter how long a lie is sustained, the truth will someday prevail!

Here’s what had happened before this statement was released early morning today – after 10 months of sitting, the Lagos Coroner’s Inquest into the collapse of a six-storey building belonging to the SCOAN, had yesterday in Ikeja indicted the church for “criminal negligence” and recommended that it be prosecuted.

The court said the Church did not get the necessary permit or approval before commencing  construction of the building. 116 people died in the tragic incident.

Cocaine Capsules Burst in Smuggler’s Stomach

A 32-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Obiefuna Ndulue, has died after some capsules used to pack substance that tested positive for cocaine burst in his stomach.

The deceased was said to have slumped at the departure hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and was rushed to a hospital within the facility. It was learnt that Ndulue, who hailed from Anambra State, had wanted to travel via the Ethiopian airline to China.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 55 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.2 kilogrammes were evacuated from the suspect’s stomach after he was stabilised at the hospital.

The Lagos-based trader was said to have confessed to an operative of the National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency that he had wanted to smuggle the drug. He reportedly died while receiving
treatment.

You recall yesterday TILB had shared a photo of a man arrested with N2.1million. The agency also said the 46-year-old businessman, Bamidele Ibiteye, was arrested for allegedly laundering $2,198,900 (about N440m).

It was learnt that the money was impounded from Ibiteye at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, as he wanted to board a flight en route to Abuja.

Ibiteye, who runs a company, ND&C Global Investment Limited, told investigators that the money belonged to a medical practitioner in the state, identified as Thomas Martins.

The suspect, however, declined to reveal the identity of the person who was to receive the money.

The NDLEA Commander at the NAIA, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, confirmed Ndulue’s death.

He said:

“The deceased collapsed at the departure hall. He collapsed after he notified the airline officials of his intention to cancel his trip. About 55 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine with a total weight of 1.20kg was evacuated from his stomach.

The suspect confessed to cocaine ingestion. He later died while receiving treatment.”

The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed Ibiteye’s arrest, adding that the money had been recovered.

He said:

“The $2,198,900 was seized from Ibiteye by anti-narcotic officials on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the MMA2, Lagos. The suspect was apprehended on his way to Abuja and he is being investigated in connection with the case.”

It was gathered that the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, had directed that the suspect and the exhibit be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation.

Petr Cech Sent Death Threats And Labelled ‘A Snake’ By Angry Chelsea Fans Following Arsenal Move

New Arsenal signing Petr Cech may have left Chelsea with a heartfelt letter to the fans, but that has not stopped a small proportion of them sending the goalkeeper death threats and brandishing him a “snake”.

Cech completed a reported £11m transfer to the Gunners on Monday afternoon, having decided to leave Chelsea due to a lack of first team football following the emergence of Thibaut Courtois last season. After 11 years of loyal service at Chelsea, Cech was given permission by club owner Roma Abramovich to discuss a move to their London rivals Arsenal, and the 33-year-old announced the move himself before thanking those who used to cheer him on every week for his time at Stamford Bridge.

However, despite a number of fans thanking Cech for his time at the club, some supporters have been unable to contain their anger and fury at seeing him join not only another Premier League side, but one that could be challenging for the Premier League title next May.

One Twitter used named @Enegali10 posted two disgusting messages aimed at Cech before deleting their account. The first read: “F**KKKKK OFFFF JUST SAW CECH SIGNED GO F*** YOURSELF F****** BRAIN DAMAGED UGLY C*** HOPE UR KIDS HAVE CANCER F****** NONCE.”

A second added: “I’m going to bring my SR-25 sniper rifle to the Bridge when we play Arsenal. Will be so f****** good to see Cech’s blood on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, one Chelsea fan in Kuwait posted a video of him burning a Chelsea goalkeeper shirt.

The Curse Of The Black Skin By Ololade Ajekigbe

Wednesday, the 17th of June saw yet another attack on blacks in the USA. In perhaps the most sordid and confounding killing in recent times, a white male sauntered into a predominantly black church where a group of Christians had come together for bible study, “worshipped” with them for about an hour before unleashing terror on the unsuspecting gathering. It was one attack too many.
The black community in the USA and indeed other parts of the world were yet to recover from the needless killings of 25 year old Freddie Gray, which sparked a series of protests and civil disorder, 50 year of Walter Scott who was shot by a North Charleston Police officer, Micheal Brown, a black teen shot by yet another Police officer in Ferguson, Missouri and Trayvon Martin, the 17 year old African American shot by George Zimmerman, who ended up being acquitted of second-degree murder resulting in protests across US cities, when it was once again dealt a blow that may be the final straw that would break the proverbial camel’s back with the murder of nine members of the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
The rise in cases of wanton killings of African Americans in the last couple of years has once again brought to the fore the stark reality that racism and ethnic discrimination which were major issues during the colonial and slave era are still a profound source of concern centuries later. There is still undoubtedly a seemingly unconquerable prejudice against blacks. Prejudice, discrimination and institutional racism continue to affect African Americans. To deny or downplay it is tantamount to living in denial about the state of things. And the trajectory of events does not proffer a soothing prognosis for the future. It is pertinent to ask what the sin of the black man is. Why does the colour of our skin matter so much? Why is it so difficult for people of other races to see blacks as fellow humans who have blood running through their veins just like them?
From the mid 19th century when Africa was called the Dark Continent because very little was known about its history and inhabitants, there has been an air of mystery about all things African that appears to be foreboding to people from the earlier known parts of the world. Despite the fact Africa has evolved from those dark days of totally unknown interiors, dense forests and “mysterious tribes” that were considered dangerous, the portrayal of Africa and Africans by the western world media still leaves plenty to be desired. Mostly bad news and failures get reportage, while successes are greatly downplayed. The average white who has never been to Africa still sees the black man as a backward being who lives on trees or mud houses and has no access to electricity not to talk of the internet. It’s shocking that there are still people who believe this in 2015! Which is why the Blacks who live abroad are thought to be highly privileged to be where they are and are sometimes seen to be undeserving of mixing with the “higher mortals” with fairer skin.
The classification of Africa as a third world continent, and its people as belonging to the lowest rung of the recognition ladder has also not done the black man any favours. Time and time again, Africa has been touted has having the potential to become one of the most powerful economies in the world due to its vast human and natural resources but has consistently failed to live up this billing. It’s greatest bane being its corrupt and selfish leaders who are all about perpetuating themselves in power and enriching themselves to the detriment of the people. This brings to mind the case of the kidnapped girls in North East Nigeria which was handled with kid gloves at the beginning and which cast a damning verdict on the state of security in the country. The call for help from the United States instead of the African Union(AU) as a first resort remains an indictment on the leadership of the AU; an organisation that has the achievement of peace and security in its member countries as part of its objectives.
The perception of Africa as the undisputed laggards of the 21st century has resulted in its people being condemned to being seen as the dregs of the global society. Our darker skin tone compared to other races doesn’t help matters as black is often associated with doom, gloom and all things negative.  Little wonder, more and more blacks are embracing the skin lightening trend – anything to distance themselves from this skin that is a source of constant ridicule.
Our self-esteem issues is also a major factor in the way we are perceived by other races. The average black person is ecstatic and immensely grateful about getting a visa to the UK, as though it were a pass to heaven. The black man treats his fellow black with disdain, but has a subservient disposition to the white man. The government would rather award a contract for road construction to a white man (doesn’t matter if he is Hispanic or Asian) and snub his fellow black who has the pedigree to do a better job just because of the colour of his skin. Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies, as no one can make us feel inferior without our consent.
The KPMG report which projects that Africa’s GDP should reach $2.6 trillion by the year 2020 will only be a mirage if we don’t get our acts together soon enough and attain that seemingly elusive potential that everyone claims that we have. We must as a matter of urgency begin to take our rightful place in the league of global players like China who were once like us. Then we can gradually earn the respect that we deserve and be seen above and beyond the colour of our skin. Either that or we fold our arms and continue to suffer the indignity that we are subjected to on a daily basis.

Boko Haram Kills 20 Villagers In Borno State

Boko Haram members yesterday June 22nd stormed Debiro village in Hawul LGA of Borno state in trucks and motorcycles, burnt houses and slit the throats of 20 villagers.

A resident of the village who spoke to Sahara Reporters, on condition of anonymity said;

“It was in the afternoon time when we started hearing gunshots and people were running helter-skelter, there was confusion everywhere, some were shot dead and many had their throats slit. We were helpless as our foodstuffs were carted away by the rampaging militants who later burnt down most of the houses in our village. I can’t say tell you the correct number of people killed, but at least 20 people including women had their throats slit.”

Ghanaian President Puts Death In Accra Flood, Fire Disasters At 152

Ghanaian President, John Mahama, said on Wednesday, that the official death toll in the 3 June flood and fire disasters at a fuel service station in Accra was 152.

Mahama said this in a speech at a national memorial service held in Accra to round off three days of national mourning for the victims of the disasters.

“The search and rescue mission is over the loss that our nation has suffered is incomprehensible.
“The figure is still provisional but we hope we will not find any more dead bodies,” he said.

All flags flew at half-mast during the mourning period and citizens were encouraged to wear black or red arm bands and clothing to mourn with the families of the victims of the tragedies.

Mahama said the process of identifying the dead was ongoing and asked families who have lost loved ones to visit three mortuaries where the bodies were sent to help identify the bodies.

He said in s situation where the bodies could be identified, the government had directed that DNA tests be conducted.
He urged families to present DNA samples so that confirmations can be made.

Mahama said series of mistakes and failings led to the tragedies but said Ghana would ensure that it did not happen again.
The fire occurred when a leaking valve at the fuel service station allowed fuel to be transported to a nearby house where it came into contact with naked flame and caused an explosion.

Several hours of rain caused heavy floods that killed the people, washed away roads, personal properties, vehicles, submerged houses and rendered thousands homeless.

Rev. Eastwood Anaba, President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, in his sermon, said the country should tap all expertise available to prevent a recurrence.

He asked the citizens to take the initiative in doing things that would solve problems, sacrifice, collaborate and make available resources, and take “positive action”.

Anaba also urged the international community to assist Ghana in dealing with the problems associated with the tragedy.
“We should improve on every aspect of our society we’ll survive this, we’ll conquer this”, the cleric said. (PANA/NAN)

Ship carrying more than 450 people sinks in China’s Yangtze river

More than 400 people are missing after a Chinese passenger boat sank on the Yangtze river after being hit by what the captain described as a cyclone.
At least 458 people were travelling on the Dongfangzhixing, or Eastern Star, vessel when it went down at around 11pm on Monday night not far from the city of Jingzhou in Hubei province.
Eight people have been rescued Tuesday morning with heavy rain and strong winds hindering the work of emergency teams.

Eastern Star had been travelling from Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, to the south-western city of Chongqing when the incident happened, according to Xinhua, China’s official news agency.
Seven of the survivors swam to shore and alerted authorities of the sinking.
After encountering extreme weather conditions that crew members described as a cyclone the ship “sank quickly”.
Initial reports said there were 405 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members on the ship. Most of the passengers were aged between 50 and 80, the Hubei Daily newspaper reported.

Another Earthquake Hits Nepal

A deadly magnitude 7.3 earthquake has struck Nepal, two weeks after a devastating quake killed more than 8,000 people in the Himalayan nation, the USGS has reported.

Police said at least 13 people had been killed in the new quake, which the USGS initially reported as magnitude 7.1, before later upgrading it to magnitude 7.3.

The quake, which struck 18km southeast of Kodari, near the base camp for Mt Everest, was measured at a shallow depth of about 18km. A series of aftershocks – including one 6.3 magnitude tremor – later hit in the same area, the USGS reported.

A spokesman for the International Organization for Migration said four people were killed in Chautara, Nepal, after the earthquake destroyed several buildings there.

“The situation in Chautara is that several buildings in the town have collapsed,” spokesman Paul Dillon told the Reuters news agency by telephone from Kathmandu. “There are four fatalities.”

Emergency officials told Al Jazeera that three people had been killed in Kathmandu, three had been killed in Sindhupalchowk district, five were killed in Dolakha district and one person died in both Sarlahi and Dhanausha districts.

At least 300 people injured in the Kathmandu Valley, police said, and at least four buildings are believed to have collapsed in the east of Kathmandu.

Police issued a public warning, calling for people to stay in open areas and to send text messages instead of making calls, to prevent the network from becoming jammed.

‘Utter panic’

Al Jazeera’s Annette Ekin, reporting from Kathmandu, said that there was “utter panic” in the capital following the quake.

“The earth just started rolling. Everyone ran out onto the streets and all of the shops are now shuttered,” she said, adding that the quake seemed to last about 30 seconds.

A woman who works for a finance company in Thamel, in Kathmandu, told Al Jazeera that she had clung on to a pillar inside her building when the quake struck.

“I was screaming. It felt like the house was falling,” she said.

Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, also reporting from Kathmandu, said the quake was so powerful that it made the building he was in “feel like jelly”.

Ogogoro Poisoning Causes More Deaths In Ondo, Says Health Official

Britain’s first legally-approved HIV self-testing kit went on sale online on Monday, promising a result in just 15 minutes with a 99.7 percent accuracy rate. Developers hope the BioSure HIV Self Test will help identify the estimated 26,000 people in Britain who have HIV but do not yet know. “The total number of deaths is 23,” Ondo state health commissioner Dayo Adeyanju told AFP by telephone. Last Monday the death toll stood at 18.

Adeyanju said the five additional deaths were those taken to hospital when all the victims fell ill in the town of Ode-Irele earlier this month and that there were no new cases. The mysterious symptoms and deaths raised fears of a contagious disease but investigations ruled out illnesses such as Ebola and other viral conditions. Symptoms included headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. All the victims died within a day of falling ill.

Adeyanju said the state government was investigating the source of the batch of gin as well as trying to improve the production of locally made alcohol to improve the safety of consumers.
