16,723 Personnel To Conduct Ondo Guber Election– INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said 16,723 of its personnel will be deployed to  conduct the November 2016,governorship election in Ondo State.

This comes as the the commission will publish the list of nominated candidates to represent political parties on October 27.

While the All Progressives Congress (APC) has Akeredolu as its candidate, media owner, Jimoh Ibrahim and former commissioner of Justice in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, are locked in a tussle over the candidacy of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ondo State is made up of eighteen (18) Local Government Areas, 203 Registration Areas, and 3,010 Polling Units. It has a total of 1,660,055 registered voters.

A breakdown of the 16,723 personnel to be deployed indicates that INEC would deploy one (1) Returning Officer, eighteen (18) Local Government Collation Officers, 203 Registration Area Collation Officers, 301 Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPOs), 3,010 Presiding Officers (POs), and 11, 103 Assistant Presiding Officers (I,II and III).

Others are 1,321 Assistant Presiding Officers (VP), 621 Reserve Assistant Presiding Officers, 19 Local Government Area Supervisors, and 126 Registration Area Cluster Supervisors.

Similarly, the commission will publish the list of nominated candidates to represent political parties as well as official voters register for the polls, on October 27.

The anticipated publication is in compliance with the relevant sections of the law.

Section 34 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) provides that INEC should publish the list of nominated candidates by political parties at least 30 days before the day of an election.

Similarly, Section 20 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) provides that the Commission should publish the official register of voters for an election, not less than 30 days before the election.

Senate Tells Buhari To Conduct Census In 2018

The Senate on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to set machinery in motion to conduct housing and population census in 2018.

Emanating from a motion by Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, at plenary on Tuesday in Abuja, the senate also urged the government to make adequate provision of fund for the exercise.

Motion the motion entitled “A call for The Federal Government to Expedite Action on the Planned 2018 National Census”, Hunkuyi reminded the government of constitutional provision for conduct of census.

He recalled that the last census was conducted in 2006 during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and said that by the 10-year provision for the exercise to be conducted, it out to be in this year.

He said that delay in the issuance of a proclamation by President Buhari and poor release of funds to the National Population Commission (NPoPC), were major setbacks to conduct of the exercise.

Hunkuyi said that in accordance with best international practices, a well planned and executed population census should take a minimum of two years.

“It is only pertinent that subsequent population census should be carried out within an adequate timing and an objective of conducting an acceptable exercise.

“Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), NPoPC, Ministry of Budget and National Planning and other supervising agencies must make adequate provision in 2017 budget as critical prerequisite to achieving 2017/2018 population census,” he said.

Sen. John Enoh, in his contribution, reiterated the need for relevant government agencies to include the total cost of conducting the census in the 2017 budget.

He stressed that the Federal Government should adhere to the United Nations provision that censuses should be conducted every 10 years.

House Of Reps To Conduct Public Hearing On U.S. Sexual Allegations Against Members

The House of Representatives says it will convene a public hearing as part of its investigations into an alleged sex scandal involving three of its members.

The hearing will allow Nigerians weigh in on the matter and be transparently engaged in the investigations as promised by the House leadership, Nicholas Ossai, the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, said.

The scandal allegedly occurred in the U.S. state of Ohio early June.

The allegations were contained in a petition forwarded to Speaker Yakubu Dogara by U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, on June 9.

In the correspondence, Mr. Entwistle said three Nigerian lawmakers, Mohammed Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Mark Gbillah (APC-Benue) and Samuel Ikon (PDP-Akwa Ibom), solicited sex from a hotel attendant and tried to engage the services of prostitutes while attending a leadership training program in that country.

The three lawmakers deny the allegations.

The speaker, Mr. Dogara, has also asked the United States government to prove its claim.

APC Dumps Audu’s Running Mate, To Conduct Fresh Primaries

The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday announced that it would conduct fresh primaries to determine a replacement for its late candidate, Abubakar Audu, in the inconclusive governorship election in Kogi State.

Addressing journalists at the party’s national Secretariat in Abuja, the national chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, said delegates to the last primaries – which saw the emergence of the late candidate – would determine who becomes the candidate.

On the fate of Mr. Audu’s running-mate, James Faleke, the APC national chairman said it would be decided after conducting fresh primary election.

“As a party, we are going to proceed with process of organising primaries to provide a substitute candidate for the late Abubakar Audu,” the party chairman declared.

INEC To Conduct Voter Registration In Kogi, Bayelsa On September 2 & 7

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will commence Continuous Voter Registration in Kogi and Bayelsa States on September 2 through September 7, ahead of the governorship elections in both states.

According to the commission’s daily bulletin issued and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) monday in Abuja, the exercise will take place at the local government areas in the states from 8a.m. to 4p.m. daily.

It stated that the five-day exercise would afford opportunity for three groups of eligible persons to be registered.

The groups, the commission said, were those who were eligible but did not register before the 2015 general election and who were registered but their names were not in the voters’ register.

“The other is those who have attained the age of 18 since the last registration exercise,’’ it added.
