US Commits $30m To Family Planning In Nigeria

The United States Agency for International Development has said that it had spent N9.12 billion (about $30 million), to promote family planning and other health interventions in Nigeria annually.
The Director of Health, Population and Nutrition, USAID Nigeria, Dr Nancy Lawanthal, who made this disclosure at the ongoing 4th National Family Planning Conference in Abuja, noted that the agency had made significant investment in reproductive health in Nigeria.
The director noted that the USAID has devoted over $30m on reproductive health in Nigeria explaining that health intervention in Nigeria is one of the agency’s largest country programmes in the world.
According to her, Nigerians have not been leading the programme as expected as no donor had been able to front for USAID in Nigeria.
Lawanthal added that USAID needed stronger commitment from Nigerians to derive the values and benefits of reproductive health services in the country adding that donors’ commitment was less important than the commitment of Nigerians themselves.
“With close to 600 million girls growing up in developing countries, achieving global prosperity starts with educating and empowering these young women so they can be healthy, productive members of their communities and become agents of change. As donor partners, we also need to see more resources on the table to create more demand for family planning services in Nigeria,” she said.

World Bank Commits N158bn To Rebuilding North East

The World Bank has earmarked $800 million to support the rebuilding of the infrastructure destroyed in the North East by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Fatma Samoura, made the disclosure on Thursday in Maiduguri during a courtesy visit to Gov Kashim Shettima. Samoura, who is also a UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, said the UN was scaling up its presence in Borno and other North Eastern states ravaged by the insurgency.

Yesterday, we had a long discussion with the World Bank team that came from Washington to attend the workshop.

“The workshop is for validating the year findings of the recovery and peace-building assessment.

“They have promised to leverage 800 million dollars for the North East to response to recovery, rehabilitation, de-mining, waste management and debris processing for the North East of Nigeria,’’ she said.

The UN representative regretted that the UN was having challenges in mobilising resources for Nigeria in view of the humanitarian crises in other parts of the world.

“As we all know, the Syrian crisis that is affecting Europe is also taking a heavy toll in terms of funding from our traditional donors.

“We are trying our best to ensure that our advocacy and our communication strategy are up to the level where we will be receiving more attention from the donor community.

“The humanitarian response plan, as we speak, is just 10 per cent funded, meaning we have only received 24 million dollars.

“This is out of 248 million dollars budgeted for the North East of Nigeria for 2016,” she said.

Samoura, however, pledged that the UN would continue to complement the World Bank and the EU supports to address the root causes of poverty and exclusion in the North East.

“The UN will be on your side in order to address the humanitarian situation.

“The UN will also support the Borno Government in its work on recovery and rehabilitation for the safe return of the IDPs back to their areas of origin,” she said.

Samoura said her visit to Maiduguri was to demonstrate the sympathy of the UN to the appalling situation of the 1.8 million people who have been displaced by insurgency.

She commended the strong leadership and commitment of the governor to finding sustainable solutions to safe and voluntary return of the IDPs to their places of origin.

Responding, Gov Shettima commended the UN for standing by the government and people of Borno in identifying the root causes and also finding lasting solutions to the insurgency.

Shettima, however, described that the $800 million pledge by the World Bank as grossly inadequate in view of the enormous challenges left behind by the insurgency.

“It is in the interest of humanity to rally round Nigeria over Boko Haram. The developed world gave Turkey two billion dollars to resettle refugees from Syria.

“There are about two million IDPs from Borno and 20 Local Government Areas were overran by Boko Haram and there is food crisis now in the state,” he said.

Man Kills Wife, 8 Children, 2 Sisters & Parents, Commits Suicide

A 35-year-old chartered accountant allegedly stabbed and killed 14 members of his family and then committed suicide by hanging himself, around 30km from India’s financial capital Mumbai. The incident occurred on 28 February.

Hansil Warekar stabbed eight children, his wife, three sisters and parents at his bungalow at Ghodbadar road in Thane district at 2am IST (8.30pm GMTon 27 February). Local police said there was a party organised at his residence on Saturday (27 February) after which all the family members had gone to sleep, when the accused may have attacked them.

“Prima facie evidence suggests that the accused bolted all the doors of the house and murdered his family while they were asleep with a knife that we found near his body. The accused then hanged himself after killing his family. There were three rooms in the house. While he was in a room with his wife and two daughters on the first floor, his parents and sisters were in separate rooms on the ground floor,” said joint commissioner of Thane Police Ashutosh Dumbare.

Police learnt of the incident when one of the victims raised an alarm and Hansil’s in-laws who were in a house nearby called them. “Hansil slit the upper part of this victim’s throat. She survived the attack and screamed for help. The survivor’s in-laws, who were in the neighbouring house heard her cries and tried opening the door, but it was locked. The in-laws broke open the grill of a window on the ground floor and entered the house. It was then that the police were alerted about the incident,” the joint commissioner added.

Now, police are waiting for Hansil’s sister Subia Bharmar, the lone survivor of the attack, who has been admitted to a hospital, to reveal the reason behind the incident. “We have recorded the survivor’s statement. However, the exact cause that triggered her brother to kill her family and himself is still unclear. Our investigation is still underway,” Dumbare said.

The murder weapon, a knife, was found near Hansil’s body.

Man Commits Suicide Over Unpaid 13 Months Salary

Tears flowed freely in the home of a middle aged engineer with the Bayelsa State Water Board, Peter Ogiero, who committed suicide by taking a popular insecticide ‘Sniper’ over unpaid 13 months salaries by the state government.

Ogiero took his life on Tuesday after waiting in vain for 13 months without salary and without a kobo to take care of his family and his failing health, as government failed to meet its financial obligations to the board’s employees.

It was gathered that the deceased, a father of four, whose only means of livelihood was his salary, succumbed to frustration after he was diagnosed to be hypertensive. He had a stroke about one year ago when he found it extremely difficult to care for himself, let alone his wife and four children.

A neighbor, who was seen wailing uncontrollably, said that in the midst of the man’s travail, his second wife (who he married after the death of his first wife) abandoned him and left for their village along with three of their children.
