FG Confirms 2 Fresh Polio Cases In Borno

The Minister of Health, Prof.Isaac Adewole, yesterday, confirmed an outbreak of wild polio virus, WPV, in Borno State. This is coming after Nigeria celebrated two years without a case of polio.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has directed the deployment of a national emergency response team, comprising government and partners to Borno State for immediate and robust polio vaccination campaign targeting vulnerable children to prevent the spread of the virus.

According to the minister, the outbreak affected two children from Gwoza and Jere Local Government areas of the state. He attributed the discovery and confirmation of the outbreak to the country’s strengthened surveillance due to improved accessibility made possible by the recent military action in liberating more communities in the North-Eastern part of the country.

The Minister said: “The detection of children paralyzed by polio shows that surveillance has increased with more access but it is a reminder that the country needs to remain vigilant and immunize all eligible children with oral polio vaccine until polio is completely eradicated worldwide.

“Our overriding priority right now is to rapidly boost immunity in the affected areas to ensure that no more children are affected by this terrible disease,” he added.

Two New Ebola Cases Discovered In Guinea

Two people have fallen ill with Ebola in Guinea after two weeks with no new confirmed cases of the disease in West Africa, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

WHO spokeswoman, Margaret Harris, told a United Nations briefing in Geneva that one case was in Forecariah, western Guinea, and appeared to be linked to a previously known chain of infection, while the other was in the capital Conakry.

Ebola transmission is considered to be over once a locality has gone 42 days without a new case of the disease. The other two countries that were worst hit by the epidemic were Liberia, which was declared transmission free on September 3, and Sierra Leone, which is counting down another 22 days until it is clear, Reuters reported.

Hit TV Show, Empire, Gets Sued For $500,000

According to TMZ, Executive producers of Fox hit TV show, Empire, may be going to court as a man named Jon Astor-White is now suing executive producers, Danny Strong and Lee Daniels, as well as Imagine Entertainment and 21st Century Fox with the claim that he shopped around a show called “King Solomon” back in 2007 which bears a lot of similarities to “Empire”.

Astor-White claims his show would have starred Richard Roundtree, and was about a record executive and his family and their battle over control of the company. He believes the creators of the show owe him $500 million for stealing his idea.

Astor-White also said he faxed the treatment around, and included a proposed cast list which which included Diahann Carroll, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, John Goodman, George Hamilton and Angie Dickinson.

Astor-White describes his show as “the style and elegance of ‘Dynasty’ meets ‘The Sopranos’ with a sprinkling of ‘The Godfather’ ,a similar comparison Marvin Gaye III made in his claim.

The show has previously been sued by a guy with Jackson family connections and by a woman who claims she is the real Cookie.

Army Commences Review Of Dismissed Soliders’ Cases

The Army will today in Jaji, Kaduna State begin the review of the cases of about 4,000 officers and men dismissed from Operation “Zaman Lafia” in Northeast.

The exercise, which was earlier slated for 311 Artillery Regiment Kontagora in Niger State, will now hold at the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre (NAPKC), Jaji.

The cases of officers and men who are  in detention in Jos, Plateau State and those already convicted for various offences under “Operation Zaman Lafiya” will be reviewed.

A signal dated August 13 and signed by Lt. Colonel P. Y Haruna from the headquarters of the 31 Artillery Brigrade to all its formations across the country directed all affected to appear before a panel at the NAPKC Jaji.

According to the signal, the review exercise will also look into the cases of officers and men “under detention, trail or convicted by GCM in respect of disciplinary cases emanating from erstwhile Operation Zaman Lafiya to NAPKC Jaji”.

IGP Mr Solomon Arase, Sets Up Judges Protection Units

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, has directed Command Commissioners of Police to immediately establish “Judges Protection Units’’ (JPU) for the protection of Judges and Courts in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement said the units were to ensure that the judiciary had adequate security to carry out their duties.

It also said that the I-G had directed the commissioners to assign Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Training and Development to conduct training and orientation for personnel designated for the JPUs.

The statement emphasised that personnel for the assignment must exhibit high sense of professionalism, courage, integrity, discipline and respect for human rights.

It said that Arase had also directed the reduction in the number of police aides attached to Civil Commissioners nationwide.

It will be recalled that Arase, during his maiden meeting with command commissioners of police and other senior officers on April 29, promised to take measures to protect judges. (NAN)
