17 political parties ready to join PDP, says BOT chairman.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin said about 17 political parties have expressed interest to join the party.

Jibrin, who claimed that they have received notification from the parties, said the PDP has no plan to change its name or sign merger deal with any political group.

The BOT chief who did not reveal the name of the parties, spoke yesterday during the investiture of a member of the House of Representatives, Jonathan Gaza Gbwefi as an honorary fellow of the Nigeria Psychological Association at new Karu in Nasarawa State.

In a related development, a top member of the APC in the South East, Chief Chemberline Okechukwu Adiaso has predicted that the PDP would soon witness mass defection of members to the ruling party.

Adiaso was reacting, at the weekend, to the recent defection of a senator from Akwa Ibom South, Nelson Effiong.

He urged other lawmakers from the South East and South South to quickly move to the APC.

Meanwhile, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani yesterday renounced his membership of the PDP, as he formalised his registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nnamani announced his resignation from the PDP last year over what he described as “frequent crisis in the party.”

At his Amechi Uwani ward, Enugu south local council, Nnamani registered with the APC, declaring that his former party has become “a road that leads to nowhere.”

Also, former governor of Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo completed all registration formalities with the APC, a party he joined early last year.

Speaking at the occasion, Nnamani said: “The PDP refused to hear other people’s voices, the party said it is democratic but does not practice democracy. We have talked to no avail and we are waiting to see where this will take the party.”

Nwobodo said he joined the APC to pursue Igbo aspiration as well as contribute to the realisation of the change mantra.

It’ll be disastrous for leaders to kill PDP – BoT chairman

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Walid Jibrin, said on Sunday that changing the name of the party would be a disaster for the country’s political development.

He declared that posterity would not forgive any member of the party plotting to destroy the PDP and dumping it to form another party.

Jibrin dismissed the rumour that some members of the main opposition party were planning to form another party.

The BoT chairman, who spoke at a press conference in Kaduna, said members were working assiduously to reposition the PDP to reclaim power from the APC, stating that posterity would not forgive any member, who wanted to kill the party to satisfy personal interest.

He dissociated himself from any plan to dump the former ruling party.

In a report last week, the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP had alleged that the Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s group was planning to woo some aggrieved senators and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress to team up with the group to form another party.

The PUNCH also reported that the Sheriff faction equally alleged that Makarfi’s group was plotting to kill the PDP, dump it and form another party.

But Jibrin claimed that every organ of the party was working to strengthen the party to enable it to play its role as an effective opposition party in the country.

Jibrin added, “I wish to say authoritatively that there is no plan to dump the PDP as it was never discussed or any discussion taken by any organ of the party.

“If we do that, posterity will not forgive us because the PDP is already a household name, dearly loved by every household in Nigeria. Posterity will judge any one with the ambition to kill the PDP; for his ambition is quite contrary to the hard work of our founding fathers and mothers, who worked so hard to produce the brand PDP.

“Changing its name and brand will be a disaster for Nigeria’s political development, especially when we cast our mind back to the hard work and foresight of our founding fathers and mothers, who came up with the brand name, PDP, which is fully accepted and cherished by Nigerians.”

On the November 26 governorship poll in Ondo State, the BoT chairman expressed optimism that Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, who he described as the PDP candidate, would win the election.

Meanwhile, the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP has called for the reinstatement of the deposed Ojuromi of Uromi, Anslem Edenojie, by the Edo State Government.

A former Minister of Works, who is also a former Chairman, BoT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, hails from Uromi.

The deposed traditional ruler was relieved of his position for allegedly assaulting a woman during the Edo State governorship election in September.

The monarch refused to apologise to the woman within the stipulated time after the woman, who was allegedly assaulted, reported him to the government.

Edonojie was suspended, forcing the embattled traditional ruler to approach the court, where he sued the former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, and demanded N1bn as damages.

The state government fired the traditional ruler the following day.

However, the PDP, under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Makarfi, faulted Oshiomhole for sacking the monarch, describing the action as an evidence of the former governor’s favouritism.

Spokesperson for the party, Dayo Adeyeye, who stated this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said, “The deposition is further evidence of favouritism and despotic reign of Adams Oshiomhole as the (former) governor of Edo State for the past eight years.

“It is also the evidence of the desire of the All Progressives Congress to destroy all constitutional and traditional institutions as well as the constitutional rights and freedom of the Nigerian people in its bid to establish a one party state.

“The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria empowers all Nigerian citizens to support, associate with and be affiliated to any political party and candidate of their choice.”

Adeyeye said it was a known fact that several traditional rulers demonstrated open support, and in fact campaigned for the APC candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, during the state governorship election.

Obaseki, who won the election, was sworn in on Saturday as the governor of the state.

Adeyeye added that the action of the former governor was an indication of his alleged willingness to “destroy constitutional and traditional institutions that do not display obvious support for the tyrannical and anti-people programmes and policies of the APC.”

He urged well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on Obaseki to reverse the deposition by restoring the monarch to his stool.

PDP Crisis: Sheriff Faction Rejects Walid Jibrin As BoT Chairman

The Ali Sheriff faction of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected Walid Jibrin as chairman of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of the party, saying his tenure had elapsed.

Mr. Jibrin had on Monday chaired a meeting of the BoT in Abuja in which a vote of confidence was passed on the Ahmed Makarfi faction Caretaker Committee.

The meeting also directed the committee to organise a fresh national convention in Abuja.

But the Sheriff faction’s Deputy National Chairman, Cairo Ojuogboh, said on Wednesday in Abuja “for the avoidance of doubt, the functions of the BoT is well articulated in the Constitution of the party and Section 32 (5g) states that it will “offers advice on matters.”

He also said the BoT has no power in the Constitution of the party to issue executive orders on the party’s matter.

” With particular reference to Section 32 (2c), it states that “the Chairman and Secretary of BoT shall serve a term of five years and no more,” he said. “The term of Sen. Walid Jubril therefore, has expired.”

Mr. Ojougnoh also said although the faction appreciated the “good job” that the reconciliation committee headed by Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson, and former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, was doing, that it was not comfortable with the proposal of the committee that Messrs. Sheriff and Makarfi co-chair a National Executive Committee, NEC, where a unity convention will be discussed on and agreed upon.

“I’ll Quit If Jonathan Emerges PDP BOT Chairman” – Isah Kantigi

Niger State deputy gubernatorial candidate under the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Isah Kantigi, has threatened to leave the party alongside his supporters, if former President Goodluck Jonathan is made chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees.

Kantigi argued that if members of the party could call for the resignation of national leadership for poor performance in the last election, the president should also share in the blame because he was leader of the party.
Speaking with Daily Trust in Minna, he said if Jonathan could not lead the party to victory as sitting president and leader of the party, then “he has nothing to offer the party now. Rather than honour the former president with BOT chairman, he should take the blame for the failure. Jonathan caused the failure of the party at all levels. He killed the party and as such should not be allowed to take over the BOT chairmanship of the party.” He said for the party to take over power in 2019, there is need for fresh set of people with new ideas to be at the helm of affairs.

Jonathan Rejected BoT Chairman Offer, Says Senior Party Leader

President Goodluck Jonathan turned down his Peoples Democratic Party’s offer to head the party’s Board of Trustees, before a former minister was appointed on Monday, a senior party leader has said.

The outgoing president was rumoured to be preparing the grounds to take over as chairman of the troubled party’s BoT, following a precedent set by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

That speculation gained fillip after the party’s BoT chairman, Tony Anenih, who resigned last week, said he was stepping down to pave way for the president to assume the post as he leaves office.

But on Monday, the party’s BoT named Haliru Mohammed Bello, a former defence minister and acting chairman of the party, as its new acting chairman after a late night meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting which ended at about 11:15pm, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said Mr. Bello was nominated to act for the next few months.

“Haliru Mohammed Bello was selected as the Acting Chairman of the BOT during the BOT meeting to serve for the next few months,” he said.

On his part, BOT Secretary, Walid Jibril, said President Jonathan had rejected the offer of becoming the party’s BOT Chairman.

According to him, Mr. Bello is to act for about two to three months when election will be conducted to choose a substantive chairman.

Mr. Bello accepted the position and promised to work hard to bring the party back to its feet.

Among those who attended the meeting are the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Tony Anenih, Acting National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus.

Others include a former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, PDP Women National Leader, Kema Chikwe, former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa, Senator Hope Uzodinma, BOT Secretary, Walid Jibril, former Minister of Women Affairs, Josephine Anenih.
