Teenager Bags 12 Months For Stealing N5,000 Phone

An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo, on Wednesday, sentenced a teenager, Shegun Olamide to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a N5,000 cell phone.

The Magistrate, Mrs P.E Foy-Yamah, sentenced Olamide, 18, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and begged the court for mercy.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ada Johnbull told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 21 at about 4:00pm in Benin City.

Johnbull said the accused stole the N5,000 handset from one Amen Kingsley.

He said the offence contravened Section 390 of the Criminal Code.

An Edo State Magistrates’ Court, at Egor in Benin, on Tuesday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Kingsley Friday, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing an Elepaq generator.

The Magistrates, Mrs Igho Braimoh, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing and begged for leniency.

Prosecutor Osayomwanbor Omoruyi had told the court that Friday, with others at large, committed the offence at about 10 p.m., at No. 9 Igiedo Str., Uselu Quarters, Benin, on Oct. 16.

Omoruyi said the convict stole one Elepaq generator valued N25, 000, belonging to Victor Oghenekone.

He said the offence contravened sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code.

Customs Seizes 25,000 Bags Of Rice

The Nigeria Customs  Service (NCS)  has intensified its war against smugglers with the seizure of  over 25,000 bags of rice, it was learnt.

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, Ikeja, it was gathered, has over 11,000 bags of the seized rice in its store; while its Tin-Can Island counterpart, Apapa,  impounded about 14,000 bags of illegally imported rice from China.

The market value of the item, it was gathered, is between N450 million and N500 million based on the market price of between N18,000 and N20,000 per 50kg bag.

A senior official of the Customs, who asked not to be named, said that over 11,000 bags of rice at the FOU, Ikeja, were seized at various locations within its zone.

The seizure, it was gathered, is in line with the resolve of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali to checkmate smugglers at the ports and border stations.

Investigation around the Lagos ports and borders last week revealed that the Customs has moved against illegal importation of rice, illicit drugs, vegetable oil, textile, used clothes, confectionery, juices, used bags and other prohibited items.

It was gathered that the rate of smuggling of rice and some other goods from Benin Republic into the country through the borders, has reduced based on the directive from the CGC to all the Commands to increase foot patrol along bush paths, as well as raise the level of intelligence gathering by its officers.

Governor Ayade Bags UNESCO Award Of Excellence

Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, has been conferred with the Award of Excellence by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for his leadership and foresight in improving the lives of the people of the state.

Presenting the award at the Governor’s office in Calabar the state capital, the Executive Director of the UNESCO Centre for Peace, Mr Guy Djoken, disclosed that the award is aimed at boosting his morale for more result-oriented initiatives.

Mr Djoken, who is also the President/CEO of US-UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations, said that through the show of commitment exhibited by the state, UNESCO through the support of the United States is willing to collaborate with the Cross River State Chambers of Commerce and Industry to create wealth and continuously improve on the living conditions of the residents of the state.

Some areas of collaboration he higlighted are the establishment of a virtual Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center that will serve as a call center as well as support all other IT-related activities.

This will be set up with the view to building the entrepreneurship area of agriculture, renewable energy, education and healthcare delivery.

In his response, Governor Ayade said that he saw the award as a call for more work and charged UNESCO to complement the state’s tourism drive under the medical tourism brand.

The Governor gave the assurance that with the conducive business climate the state has, coupled with the hospitable deposition of the people, Calabar would definitely bring a huge return on investment if it sites a health facility in the state.

Obasanjo Bags MA Degree In Christian Theology, Graduate Next Week With 5,000 Others At NOUN Convocation

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is among over 5,000 students that would be graduating from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). He would be conferred with MA degree in Christian Theology.
The MA degree is under the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Obasanjo studied at NOUN Abeokuta study centre. His two are supervisors, Prof Isaac Ayegboyin, Head of Department of Religious Studies, University of Ibadan and Dr. Philip Tachin, lecturer in Systemic Theology Department.
Attempt by Saturday Sun to get the title of Obasanjo’s MA project proved abortive but it was learnt that the former President concluded his studies during the 2014/2015 academic session.
The graduation ceremony scheduled for Abuja next would attract stakeholders including the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, official of the National Universities Commission as well as associates of former President Obasanjo.
With his bagging of MA degree, the former President is one set to his desire to acquire PhD degree. Obasanjo while registering for his Postgraduate course in Lagos on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, promised to go for his PhD.
Obasanjo who his tenure as President resuscitated the National Open University of Nigeria, would be the star attraction at the 5th convocation ceremony scheduled to hold at University Village, National Open University of Nigeria, Cadastral Zone, Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, Jabi-Abuja.
The Management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has concluded arrangements to host the 5th Convocation Ceremony of the University.
The ceremony, which is slated for Friday and Saturday, 15th and 16thJanuary, 2016, will hold at the permanent site of the University, University Village, 91 Cadastral Zone,NnamdiAzikiwe Expressway, Jabi, Abuja.

Teenager Bags 30 Days Imprisonment For Indian Hemp

A Federal High Court sitting in Jos on Monday sentenced an 18-year-old man, Thomas Friday, to 30 days imprisonment for possession of Indian hemp.

Friday, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was caught with 75.9 grammes of Cannabis sativa, commonly called, Indian hemp.

He was arrested on Sept. 26 in Shendam, Jos and arraigned on Nov. 6.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Sarah Oketola, called one witness, Etsu Bamshi, an Exhibit Keeper with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The witness tendered the following exhibits, packing of substance form, certificate of test analysis, scientific aid form and the accused person’s confessional statement.

Chimamanda Adiche’s ‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’ Wins Best Of The Best Award

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun has topped a list of the last decade’s winners of the Baileys Women’s Fiction Prize.

“Best of the best” is part of the celebrations to mark 20 years of the annual £30,000 prize.

The Nigerian author won in 2007 for her story, her second novel, set during the Biafran War of the 1960s.

The 38-year-old said of the prize, Over the years it’s brought wonderful literature to a wide readership that might not have found many of the books. I feel I am in very good company.
