President Donald Trump said Monday the chaos that erupted at the end of the Oscars was due to Hollywood obsessing about him rather than concentrating on running a smooth show.

In an Oval Office interview with conservative website Breitbart News, Trump said Oscars organizers had taken their eyes off the ball because they “were focused so hard on politics.”

“It was a little sad. It took away from the glamour of the Oscars,” he told the site, which was previously managed by Steve Bannon, who now serves as Trump’s chief White House strategist.

“It didn’t feel like a very glamorous evening. I’ve been to the Oscars. There was something very special missing, and then to end that way was sad.”

Trump’s comments came after Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mistakenly presented the best picture statuette at the climax of the ceremony to “La La Land,” when “Moonlight” was the real winner.

The mixup, which made for a chaotic end to ABC’s telecast of the show, has been described as one of the most embarrassing moments in Oscars history.

– ‘Very upset’ –
With the dust settling on the controversy, the finger of blame has settled on PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Brian Cullinan, who was responsible, along with colleague Martha Ruiz, for ensuring that each awards presenter was handed the correct envelope.

Cullinan pulled the envelope that was supposed to be for best picture winner from the wrong pile, the company said.

“He is very upset about this mistake. And it is also my mistake, our mistake and we all feel very bad,” said Tim Ryan, PwC’s US chairman, according to trade magazine Variety.

Trump had been the target of light-hearted jokes and serious derision throughout the night as Oscar-winners railed against his immigration policies.

Host Jimmy Kimmel trolled the Republican via Twitter during the live broadcast and mocked the commander-in-chief’s criticism of screen icon Meryl Streep.

“I want to say thank you to President Trump. Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? That’s gone, thanks to him!” Kimmel scoffed.

Trump doesn’t explain in the interview why he thinks the jokes at his expense led to the unrelated error, and it is unclear if he watched the show.

Breitbart, one of several news outlets favored by America’s white nationalist extremist fringe, said the comments came in a lengthy interview covering health care, tax cuts, immigration and a variety of other topics.

Breitbart said the mixup came after what it called “hours of Trump-bashing by the Hollywood elites.”

“Now, the president has got the last laugh as he hammers Hollywood for its epic fail,” it added.

#BringBackOurGirls wins the International Human Rights ‘Emilio F. Mignone’ Prize 2016

The Government of Argentina has awarded the #BringBackOurGirls movement the International Human Rights Prize ‘Emilio F. Mignone’ for work in advocacy towards respect for human rights worldwide.

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday 6 December at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Buenos Aires.

The #BringBackOurGirls is being represented at the event by two members of the Movement– Aisha Yesufu who is the Chairperson of the Strategic Team, and Dr. Chinwe Madubuike, a member of the Team.

While in Argentina, they will as part of the award ceremonies, meet with the human rights group– Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (The Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo- a Citizens’ group with a historical origin similar to #BringBackOurGirls. It is made up of grandmothers, mothers and other citizens who have since 1977 been advocating for the return of an estimated 500 children abducted or born in detention during the military era and illegally adopted, with their identities hidden.

The Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo has advocated weekly in the last thirty nine years. Their advocacy bears strong similarity with #BringBackOurGirls which has been on a daily campaign since 30 April 2014 for the rescue of now 196 out of the 219 #ChibokGirls abducted in their school on 14 April 2014.

Other engagements are with Equipo Argentino de Trabajo e Investigación Psicosocial (EATIP – Argentine Psychosocial Work and Research Team), the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EEAF, Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense). Special Representative for Human Rights in the international stage, Ambassador Leandro Despouy; General Director for Human Rights, Minister María Gabriela Quinteros; Director for Subsaharan Africa; and Director for Women’s Issues, Minister María Luisa Martino. Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS, Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales). Visit to the ex ESMA (ex Naval School of Mechanics), visit to the Parque de la Memoria (Memory Park). Monument to the victims of State Terrorism, and conclude with a dinner with the Mignone family.

The African Football Confederation (CAF) has released the names of five players shortlisted for the 2016 Glo-CAF 2016 African Player of the Year Award.

No Nigerian made the list.

The names of the 5 players according to a statement on the body’s website, cafonline.com are:

2. Riyad Mahrez (Algeria & Leicester City)
3. Sadio Mane (Senegal & Liverpool)
4. Mohamed Salah (Egypt & Roma)

For the African Player of the Year (Based in Africa), the top five are;

The statement said that for the final phase, votes from the Head Coaches/Technical Directors of the 54 National Associations affiliated to CAF plus Associate Members will be involved.

Also, Reunion Island and Zanzibar, together with the other half of the 20-member Panel of Experts (10 persons) will be counted towards the determination of the eventual winners, it said.

The statement added that the 2016 Glo-CAF Awards Gala, sponsored by telecommunication giants, Globacom, will hold on January 5, 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria.

Super Eagles Captain John Obi Mikel was unable to make the final shortlist, a development pundits said was because of his lack of playing this season at Chelsea.

Mikel Obi, Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City and Alex Iwobi of Arsenal Fc of England were nominated for the awards.

Nwankwo Kanu is the last Nigerian to win the prestigious football award in 1996 and 1999 while still playing for Arsenal FC of England.

#MTVMAMA2016: Yemi Alade wins ‘best female’, says women not only good in the kitchen

Yemi Alade, self-acclaimed Mama Africa, beat Tiwa Savage to win the ‘best female artiste’ award at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016.

The Effyzzie Music act is one of three ladies hosting the award ceremony after Trevor Noah, US-based South African comedian, pulled out over health issues.

To win the award, Yemi Alade fought off competition from Josey (Ivory Coast), Mz Vee (Ghana), Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania) as well as Mavin singer, Tiwa Savage,

While delivering her acceptance speech, Alade reacted to president Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial comments that his wife, Aisha, belongs to the kitchen and the other room.

“Women, don’t forget that we are not only good in the kitchen, living room and the other room — we are also good at anywhere we want to be”, she said.

The ‘Johnny’ singer is also the first female to be nominated for ‘artiste of the year’ category.

She also performed with Sauti Sol, Kenya group, winners of the ‘best group’ category.

Trevor Noah pulls out of 2016 MTV MAMA Awards.

South African comedian Trevor Noah has announced his inability to host the 2016 MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA).

The Comedy Central host made the announcement earlier on Friday, explaining he has been suffering from a severe respiratory and ear infection.

“Due to the infection and strain on my vocal chords the doctor has ordered me to rest. I desperately wish I could dismiss the doctor but the added risk of flying means the decision would be highly irresponsible and may cause further damage,” he said.

MTV, organisers of the show has announced television and radio personality Bonang Matheba as his replacement.

Bonang who has less than 24 hours to prepare, said, “….. Feels a bit UNREAL!! Thank you @MTVBaseAfrica for trusting ME!! Here we go…. 24 hours to prep!!”

The 2016 MAMA will hold on Saturday October 22nd in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Game of Thrones Breaks Record and Wins Best Drama for Second Year

Winter might be coming for the residents of Westeros but for the creators of Game of Thrones and HBO it was clear skies again at the Emmys, where the series won the best drama series award for the second year in a row.

The HBO series was up for 24 awards and came away with 12 at Sunday night’s Emmy awards in Los Angeles, breaking a record set by the sitcom Frasier with a total haul of 38 Emmys.

The Battle of the Bastards episode was singled out for praise and won awards for best drama writing (David Benihoff and DB Weiss) and directing (Miguel Sapotchnik).

Veep, which has been nominated 42 times at the Emmys, won the best comedy category.

It was also a great night for The People v OJ Simpson, Ryan Murphy’s dramatisation of the OJ Simpson trial. The show picked up 22 nominations and won the outstanding limited series gong, while actors Sterling K Brown, Sarah Paulson and Courtney B Vance all picked up individual honors for their performances as Christopher Darden, Marcia Clark and Johnnie Cochran, respectively.

Rami Malek took home a surprise win for lead actor in a drama, for his performance as Elliot Alderson, a paranoid, socially awkward hacker in Mr Robot, while Tatiana Maslany won in the best actress category for Orphan Black.

The issue of diversity was constantly raised on the night with Jimmy Kimmel starting the evening by joking about Hollywood’s propensity for saying how much it cares about diversity without necessarily doing anything about it. One moment that wasn’t so funny was when Aziz Ansari was cut off before being able to give his speech after winning outstanding writing in a comedy series for Master of None.

“That was a little weird earlier, I just wanted to thank my parents who inspired the episode and acted in the show too,” he said, when he appeared later to give the award for best writing for a variety special. The band was also criticised for playing off a producer of The People v OJ Simpson, who was making an emotional dedication to her wife.

Former Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush appeared in a bizarre opening segment, playing a chauffeur for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “If you run a positive campaign the voters will ultimately make the right choice,” he said in a self-effacing scene that poked fun at his disastrous campaign.

Kimmel’s own performance was at times controversial, especially a joke he made about Johnnie Cochran being “somewhere looking up at us” after Courtney B Vance’s win for his portrayal of him on The People v OJ Simpson.

The Emmy voters’ habit of picking the same winners continued with Jeffrey Tambor and Julia Louis-Dreyfus picking up lead actor and actress in a comedy. Louis-Dreyfus has won the award five years in a row for Veep, while Tambor picked up the award after winning last year for his performance in Transparent.

Tambor also led a tribute to Garry Shandling, who died in March and who he worked with on the Larry Sanders show. There was another tribute for Garry Marshall from Henry Winkler, who called him “one of the most beloved men in the history of our business”.

It was a good night for British talent with John Oliver winning for best variety talk, and Sherlock (best made for TV movie) and The Night Manager (best directing) also winning on the night.

Regina King won best supporting actress in a limited series or movie for the second year in a row for her performance in American Crime. Key & Peele won in the variety sketch category for their Comedy Central series, which ended after its fifth season. Ben Mendelsohn managed to cause an upset in the best supporting actor in a drama category by beating Game of Thrones stars Kit Harrington and Peter Dinklage.

Fans React As Beyonce Loses All Four Nominations At 2016 Emmys

So sad! Diva Beyonce didn’t manage to win any of the four Emmys that she was nominated for on Sunday night. The Sorry hitmaker had her fans on the edge of their seats with rumours of a surprise performance but what they got instead was disappointment all round at the 68th annual Emmy Awards.

Fans were hoping that Beyonce’s HBO special and visual-album Lemonade was going to scoop the awards, so the BeyHives were furious when Laverne Cox announced that directors of Grease: Live – Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski – had won the final Emmy for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special.

“I wasted 2 hours for Beyoncé to not show up & to lose the EMMY #Emmys2016 ,” one disappointed fan tweeted. Another joked about Beyonce and Jay Z’s imagined conversation: “Somewhere Beyoncé is laying in a bathtub of money – Jay: Bey, you didn’t win the Emmy – Beyoncé: Who?”

While another added: “How you gonna bring Laverne Cox up to present an award Beyoncé is nominated in and have her give it to two white men #Emmys ”.

Jackie Chan Awarded Honorary Oscar

Action movie star, writer, director and martial artist Jackie Chan is to be given an honorary Oscar for his “extraordinary achievements” in film.

The US film academy also voted to give the awards to editor Anne Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentary maker Frederick Wiseman.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs described the four as “true pioneers and legends in their crafts”.

Chan, 62, starred in dozens of martial arts films in his native Hong Kong.

He went on to huge international success with hits like Rumble in the Bronx, the Rush Hour franchise, and the animation film Kung Fu Panda.

Mr. Ambode is closely trailed by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike with 29%; while Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state secured 18% of total vote casts to maintain a spot in the third place.

In the fourth place is Delta State Governor, Patrick Okowa with 13%; and Governor Nasir El-Rufai
of Kaduna state sits in the fifth position with 5% of vote casts. The Good Governance Poll, which ended on Wednesday 3rd, 2016, by 2:pm, Nigerian time, was initiated by the African Leadership Magazine UK, in line with the magazine’s objective of providing credible information and support to leaders in Nigeria and Africa at large.

The Poll is part of the group’s strategic engagement tool designed to monitor performance, gauge the mood of the electorates, promote good governance, as well as engender peer review mechanisms amongst leaders in Nigeria and Africa at large. The Good Governance Poll is particularly important in Nigeria, following the country’s prevailing realities; while some Governors in the country have been unable to meet their obligation to the electorates, others have been ingenious in managing state resources and also making concerted efforts towards shoring up their IGR. Military Dog That Lost Its Leg In Afghanistan Given Highest Medal By U.S Army

Lucca has become the 67th animal to be honoured with the Dickin Medal, the Victoria Cross for animals, after the U.S Marine Corps decided to honour the 12-year-old German Shepherd who served the US Marine Corps for six years and lost her leg during a bomb sniffing operation in Afghanistan.

According to reports, in 2012, after losing her leg and suffering chest burns from the bomb, she retired but army reports have it that there were never any human casualties during her patrols, such was her worth to the army.

Lucca’s owner, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham, traveled to London with her to accept the
prestigious medal founded by vet charity PDSA in 1943 .

It’s been awarded to 31 dogs, 32 Second World War messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat since it’s inception.

Lucca is very intelligent, loyal, and had an amazing drive for work as a search dog,’ he said.
‘She is the only reason I made it home to my family and I am fortunate to have served with her. Today, I do my best to keep her spoiled in her well-deserved retirement.’

Lucca and her owner served in two operations in Iraq before going to Afghanistan where she led 75 patrols in Helmand Province, a province heavily laden with improvised explosive devices.

Jan McLoughlin, DGl of the PDSA, said:

‘Lucca’s conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty makes her a hugely deserving recipient of the PDSA Dickin Medal.

‘Her ability and determination to seek our arms and explosives preserved human life amid some of the world’s fiercest military conflicts.’

Nigerian blogger Uche Pedro, Publisher of Bella Naija wins the 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs) on Saturday, 12 March at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Prior to the creating of her website BellaNaija, Uche worked for Shell Canada, Cadbury Middle East & Africa Unit in the UK, and Cadbury in Nigeria. Uche is a Fellow of TEDAfrica and a Nigeria Leadership Initiative associate.

In July 2006, she founded BellaNaija and served as the managing director and Founding Editor before she went on to establish Bainstone Limited in 2009.

Taylor Swift Takes A Swipe At Kanye West At The Grammys

Taylor Swift took a swipe at Kanye West as she received her award for Album of the Year for the second time at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards for ‘1989’. This came after Kanye West, recently put Swift in his new song “Famous,” where he said, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.”
Taylor said:

“I want to thank fans for the last 10 years and the Recording Academy for giving us this unbelievable honor. I want to thank all of my collaborators that you season this stage, mostly I want to thank my co-executive producer Max Martin who has deserved to be up
here for 25 years,” she began. ….
“And as the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. “But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you are going, you will look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment.”

Outgoing Wada Awards Flyover Contract

Against the backdrop of the lingering indefinite strike embarked by the state civil servants, the governor, Idris Wada, has assured them that he will leave no stone unturned to pay the salaries owed them before the expiration of his administration.

The governor gave the assurance on Thursday in Lokoja during the flag-off of the graded separation interchange (fly-over) at the popular Ganaja junction in Lokoja metropolis.

The governor disclosed that the state has been obtaining bank facilities to augment the shortfall from the federation account to pay salaries since June last year, saying that the banks have stopped the facilities which militated against the regular payment of workers’ salaries.

“The truth is this, there was short fall in the revenue from the federation accounts. We have been obtaining overdraft to pay salaries since june last year.

“That was why we applied for bail out but I wonder why it has been subjected to politics, just to inflict financial pains on the civil servants. I assure them that I will do everything within my power to pay the salaries before I leave office,” he promised .

The governor however noted that the construction of the fly-over bridge will no doubt give room for free flow of traffic and also improve the socio- economic activities of the people.

The nominations for the 58th annual Grammy Awards were announced on Monday morning.

Kendrick Lamar scored a leading 11 nominations, with Taylor Swift and The Weeknd each earning seven nominations. Drake scored five nominations. Lamar, Swift and The Weeknd will face off in the category of album of the year, going up against Alabama Shakes and Chris Stapleton.

Swift’s “Blank Space” is also up for record of the year, as is The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.” They’re up against D’Angelo and the Vanguard’s “Really Love”; “Uptown Funk,” from Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars; and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”

Lamar and Swift will also vie for the song of the year Grammy, with Lamar’s “Alright” going up against Swift’s “Blank Space.” Other nominees in the category, which awards the songwriter, are Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” and Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”

The best new artist nominees are Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and Meghan

Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s Furious 7 soundtrack hit “See You Again” scored three nominations, including ones for song of the year, best pop duo/group performance and best song written for visual media. Two songs from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack — Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” and The Weeknd’s “Earned It” — also scored multiple nominations. “Love Me Like You Do” is up for best pop solo performance and best song written for visual media. “Earned It” is up for best R&B performance, best R&B song and best song written for visual media. Meanwhile, Dr. Dre’s Straight Outta Compton-inspired release Compton is up for best rap album.

The best song written for visual media category includes a number of Oscar hopefuls. Beyond “See You Again” and the Fifty Shades selections, Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground is up for the Grammy. Those songs will face off against last year’s Oscar winner for best song, Common and John Legend’s “Glory.”

Past and present Oscar hopefuls are also represented in the categories of best compilation soundtrack for visual media and best score soundtrack for visual media. The first category includes the soundtracks from best song Oscar hopefuls, Fifty Shades of Grey and Pitch Perfect 2 as well as the soundtracks for 2015 Oscar nominee and winner, respectively, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me and Selma. The latter category includes the soundtracks of 2015 Oscar winners Birdman, The Imitation Game, Interstellar, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash.

Amy Poehler is up for best spoken word album for the audio book of Yes Please. Other nominees in that category are Patti Smith (Blood On Snow), Dick Cavett (Brief Encounters), Jimmy Carter (A Full Life) and Janis Ian & Jean Smart (Patience and Sarah). “I Don’t Get Awards Because Of Politics In The Industry” – Burna Boy

Burna boy, has opened up on why he does not consider himself a part of the Nigerian music industry.According to him,there is too much politics.
Speaking to The Fader magazine, he said:

He said, “It’s political, man. To be honest, I don’t really feel like I’m a part of the industry. Check out awards, I don’t get awards because the powers that be don’t really like me. I’m not like everyone else; I won’t do what everyone else does. They don’t like
it.Everything is really political, too much politics in the industry and I’m not a very good politician.
So I don’t really involve myself in all that. I just drop hit songs, and my fan base keeps increasing.“If I was a part of the industry then I wouldn’t have shit today. Think about it. It would just be one of the songs you hear in the club and then that’s it.“But right now, you see, I don’t have the most Twitter followers or the most Instagram numbers or whatever, but the things that I do the people with one million followers can’t do it.”

Fashola, Six Others For ICG Award In US

The immediate past governor of Lagos State and ministerial nominee, Babatunde Raji Fashola will tomorrow be conferred with award by International Crisis Group (ICG), a worldwide conflict prevention group. Other six exceptional personalities will also be conferred with the awards.

The annual award will be held in New York, United States.

In a statement by ICG, Stephen J. Solarz, the award will be given to Fashola “for his commitment to resolving social, economic and security challenges in one of the world’s most challenging urban environments.”

Some of the other awardees include; former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako Ogata, Former Italian Foreign Minister, Emma Bonino, former Australian Foreign Minister and two others.

In celebration of African music and culture, the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in league with the Africa Union Commission (AUC) has announced AFRIMA 2015 nominees and the multiple award-winning male choral group from South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo to lead the invasion of over one hundred and sixty two (162) African superstars who have confirm attendance to the 2015 AFRIMA Awards slated for Sunday, November 15 at Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ladysmith is arguably the most decorated male group in Africa, having won multiple awards including four Grammys in 1988, 2004, 2009 and 2013 respectively. Formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the group had been singing together since the early 1950s. However, it was Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s collaboration with Paul Simon in 1986 for the Graceland album that brought it the much needed international acclaim.

Confirming their performance at AFRIMA Awards, band’s manager, Majozi Christopher Zolisile, stated: “AFRIMA 2015 will be staged in November which coincidentally is the month for Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s 55th anniversary. It will be amazing and electrifying to perform on a big stage like All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2015 in Nigeria. We are looking forward to it.”

Other artistes billed to perform at the award ceremony include Yemi Alade from Nigeria, who broke records with her hit single, ‘Johnny’ in 2013. Her counterpart from Cameroon, Charlotte Dipanda, an Afro pop singer, who has worked with Congolese singer, Papa Wemba and provided background vocals for Manu Dibango, Rokia Traore and Axelle Red will also grace the AFRIMA stage. The duo of Diamond Platnumz, a Bongo Flava recording artist and dancer from Tanzania and Olamide from Nigeria will set the stage on fire at the AFRIMA 2015. Both have won numerous awards.

‘Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.

‘You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.’ Thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the Television Academy.’ Davis, who is a graduate from the prestigious Juilliard School, concluded.

Her speech was a highlight from the show and also drew a standing ovation from Taraji P. Henson in the crowd.

An emotional Davis continued on by thanking the other actresses of color, including Washington, Halle Berry, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union and fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson.
