We’re building on Vision 2020 to get out of recession, says Udoma

Udo Udoma, minister of budget and national planning, says the economic plan of the federal government to pull the country out of recession builds on the previous development plans, particularly the Vision 20-2020.

Briefing the national assembly about the plan —National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (NERGP) — on Wednesday, Udoma said the need for the plan and its effective implementation was all the more imperative, especially given the current state of the economy.

Recalling that the country has had several beautifully-packaged but hardly-implemented economic plans in the past, he said efforts must be made to ensure that the new plan does not eventually suffer the fate of its predecessors.

To ensure the NERGP does not go the way of others, he disclosed that government was putting in place a specially staffed delivery unit that will drive implementation of the NERG Plan through effective monitoring and evaluation.

The NERGP focuses on five broad areas: macroeconomic policy, economic diversification and growth drivers, competitiveness, social inclusion and jobs, and governance and other enablers.

Acknowledging receipt, and confirming consideration of earlier inputs from the national assembly, he told the lawmakers, drawn mainly from the relevant committees of the two chambers, that “we are here to consult you in a more organized and focused way so as to further enrich the plan with further inputs from you”.

He told them that the plan is national in nature and will require inputs from the National Assembly and the sub-national governments.

The time-frame for the plan is 2017 to 2020 and all subsequent annual budgets under the Buhari Administration will be driven by the NERGP.

“This plan builds on the previous development plans the country has developed, particularly the Vision 20-2020,” Udoma said.

“The development of this plan is part of a process we have been working on since we came into government. We started with the Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) for the 2016 budget.”

He explained that regarding the NERGP, consultations had been held with several stakeholders, including a retreat involving representatives of the private sector, academia, government officials and other stakeholders, which generated very insightful ideas on issues to consider in the plan.

“We also held a roundtable with the Honourable Commissioners and Permanent secretaries of State’s Ministries of Economic Planning and Budget, as well as our Development Partners,” he said.

“It is a medium-term plan (2017-2020), which is expected to drive Nigeria to a minimum growth rate of 7% within the plan period.

“However, the fact that we are in recession means that the plan is one that must also be designed to get us quickly out of recession. The NERGP therefore fulfills the dual goal of identifying short-term recovery initiatives to get us quickly out of recession, as well as presenting a medium-term growth plan.

“Our goal is to have an economy with low inflation, stable exchange rates, and a diversified inclusive growth. The proposed initiatives prescribed by the plan address the country’s poor competiveness, and are designed to improve the business environment and attract investment in infrastructure. Jobs and social inclusion are also key deliverables of the plan.”

Gershom Bassey, the chairman of the session, who is also the vice chairman of the senate committee on petroleum upstream, spoke on the need to focus on some very strong points of the economy, as trying to address all the economic challenges at once may be counter-productive.

CBN Plans Financial Services in Villages By 2020

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emeifele yesterday announced plans to render financial services to villages across the country by the end of 2020.

Emefiele who made the disclosure at a two-day CBN fair tagged, “Promoting Financial Stability and Economic Development,” said the CBN now has a Central Complaints Center where customers can present their challenges which would be resolved immediately.

Represented by the Benin Branch Controller, Mr. Richard Jumbo, the CBN governor said it has become pertinent to sensitise the people on their rights and duties as a customer, urging participants to be dedicated to preaching the CBN gospel of actualising a full cashless society by the year 2020.

According to him, “The banking sector has improved to the extent that you can buy and transfer money with your phone. You can use your ATM to pay for goods in shops through POS.
He said the programme was also aimed at teaching those looking for loan for agriculture and business to be taught how to get the loan.

His words: “We want to bring financial services to the villages that there are things that can be done with the phone not when you want money you have to travel for miles to another town. Now you can seat in your house and send any amount of money you want to send. Now the Central Bank has a channel where you have your complaints and they will be resolved”.

On his part, the Deputy Director and Leader of the Team, MrSam Okojie who spoke on handling the currency said the naira need to be treated with respect as the cost of producing the currency is higher than the denomination itself.

He reiterated that the sales of currency on the streets is punishable by the law setting up the apex bank, noting that a total of 17 states have been covered so far on the preaching of the need to keep the naira clean and neat.

According to him, “We are here as part of efforts to bring our initiative closer to the people and sensitise the masses. We are moving from state to state, lack of information or misinformation is a problem.

Many people are not aware so we have thought it wise to move out, meet the people, explain to them what we are doing, let them ask their questions and they will get feedback.
“We have covered about 17 states, we have gone round and we are going second round with Cross Rivers remaining.”

Obama Gives Kanye West Some Tips For Presidential Run

If you’re going to run for president, Kanye West, you might as well listen to someone who’s been there and done that.

“I do have some advice for him,” President Barack Obama said during a West Coast fundraiser featuring an appearance by the rapper. “Just some stuff that I’ve picked up on the way.”

When West appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards last month, he announced that he would run for president in 2020.

Obama’s Tip No. 1 could have been aimed at reality TV star turned presidential candidate Donald Trump — and maybe a few others in the crowded GOP field.

“First of all, you’ve got to spend a lot of time dealing with some strange characters who behave like they’re on a reality TV show,” Obama said. “So you’ve just to be cool with that.”

Tip No. 2 referenced West’s fifth studio album. “Saying that you have a ‘Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ — that’s what’s known as ‘off-message’ in politics,” Obama said. “You can’t say something like that. There are a lot of people who have lost their congressional seats saying things like that.”

Tip No. 3 hit the Chicago-raised West close to home. “Do you really think that this country is going to elect a black guy from the South Side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States?” Obama asked. “That is crazy. That’s cray!”

Obama, aka POTUS, also joked that West has his own nickname for the person in the White House — Peezy (that’s someone who is really, really cool).

West also is thinking about running for speaker of the House, Obama cracked.

“Couldn’t get any stranger,” he said.

Second Niger Bridge To Be Completed In 2020

The hope of an early completion of the Second Niger Bridge has been dashed. It will not be completed and ready for use until 2020, Uche Orji, Managing Director and CEO of Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), has said.

The bridge flagged off on March 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan was initially billed for completion in March 2018.

According to Orji who briefed President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, on the Second Niger Bridge, health care, agriculture, power and other activities of the NSIA, the sum of $2.2 million has been spent on the project preparatory state of the bridge alone.

He said unlike the current Niger bridge which is one lane either way, the 11.9-kilometre Second Niger Bridge would be a six-lane highway comprising three lanes either way.
