Will Arsenal ever win the Premier League again under Wenger? – By Baba Grumpy

A few weeks ago, I was asked this question and was tasked to put my thoughts down.

I have not been motivated to write because of our poor form. In the words of a gentleman I respect, the Arsenal Team is like a “seemingly devastated side, shorn of confidence and steering wildly towards a rocky shore”.  May I add very much helped by a misguided section of the fan base that are very much determined to commit mass suicide by jumping off the cliff edge like lemmings.

Following the draw against Man City, I have found some energy and motivation to write.  Prior to Sunday’s match, it was difficult to tell where the next bit of light ahead of the tunnel was coming from. Fortunately we found something and I hope we can build on it. Not that the visitors on Wednesday will be a walk over. There is no ‘gimme’ in the Premier League plus it is a derby.  Desire, talent application, work rate & a bit of luck will do it. Should do it for us.

The simple answer to the subject of this article is: NOBODY KNOWS. Anybody who tells you they know one way or the other is unfortunately telling porkies.

At the start of 2015/16 season, at the mid point and after the Leicester loss at the Emirates that season, not one person knew Leicester will win and they did. Until The Spuds self-combust at Stamford Bridge, it was all ‘can they’? Not ‘they will’.  How many people had Chelsea down as league champions after the chastening defeat at The Emirates early this season? Less than 2 months ago, the Manchester Police Twitter account was bantering away at Liverpool FC’s inability to buy a Premier League point. Today they can’t stop vacuuming up 3 points.

At the start of this season, all the smart money was on one of the Manchester clubs winning league. See how that is panning out. Both clubs have spent close to a billion pounds over the last 2 seasons and are capable of paying over £200k per week wages to several players and are both still nowhere near Premier League winning sides.

Predicting if a side will win the league is not easy or straightforward otherwise Bookies will be out of business. Quoting generously from the same source as earlier “Football is a complex blend of tactics, egos, form and confidence”. Winning a football match is not easy let alone a league of 38 football matches.  The better team doesn’t always win for different reasons: ill luck; wrong bounce of the ball; funny / dodgy referees, injuries etc.

If you were to ask many if Everton or our poor neighbors in Middlesex can challenge for the title, you are likely to find that people are more willing to give them the benefit of doubt while not willing to cut Arsenal under Arsene any slack at all. Many will rightfully point to the last 13 years without a league championship; the inability to compete throughout the whole season, the Champions League Round of 16 exits, the inability to pay top wages, sign the very best players and potentially many more unconnected reasons like ticket prices, a non visible owner etc. as their reason why Arsenal under Arsene can’t win. They have a point. Up to a point.

What many don’t consider in all of their upset feelings on this touchy subject of Arsene Wenger’s continued stay at The Emirates is the subject of money.  The big bucks has simply been the biggest issue here. Until the billions from the Russian owner came in. Chelsea were nobodies. Now they are there or thereabout except when Jose Mourinho does a madness and threatens to bring the whole house down.

Same with Man City. 44 years with big fat zero until the Middle East Oil billions poured in. Money made a difference even in the Ferguson years. United were able to pay bigger wages and bigger transfer fees. When the Glazer debt hobbled United, their ability to compete and dominate was challenged season after season.

At the moment, Arsenal unfortunately can’t spunk money about like any of the bigger boys either for transfer fees or for wages.  Yes we have a billionaire owner. His wife and her family did not make their money from selling state assets to themselves nor did they suddenly discover some viscose liquid in their back garden. Even if the Arsenal owner had a money-printing machine in his cellar, it is his decision how to spend his money and any sane and rational person should not quarrel with that.

If Arsenal FC and its owners were to one day, decide to spend money like Chelsea, Man U and Man City are doing, it will take 2 to 3 transfer seasons of spending before we can draw level with where these troika are at the moment and there would still be no guarantees of success. If however Arsene and Arsenal can somehow contrive to magic this money and spend like Chelsea and Man City season after season, Arsene and Arsenal will compete from August to May every Premier League season, win at least one league title every 3 seasons and match the might of the European footballing elite in the Champions league.

For God’s sake, Pellegrini won the league and got to the Semi Final of the Champions League. What is this nonsense about football has passed Arsene by? What tactics did Pellegrini deploy to win his league title? Why can’t Arsene achieve the same with Arsenal with the ‘unlimited’ resources at the disposal of Chelsea or Man City?

A word of caution though. The day a leader of Russia decides he wants to be petty or the day Roman himself gets bored, what is going to happen to the unlimited resources of Chelsea? What happens when oil sells for single figures or a Mad Mullah is threatening the safety of the Middle East and they are on lockdown unable to ship oil for a few months?  Will the oil money still gush without a tap? People who think spending money like a drunken sailor is the way to go should beware the ides of Portsmouth and many others.

If Leicester is your retort to the issue of money, my simple response is that Leicester’s win was an exception. They waited for 120 years before their first bite of the cherry. Are we willing to wait that long too? I very much doubt that. Yes they did it and fair play to them. The stars aligned in their favor including dodgy refereeing decisions, Man City’s own flirtation with Pep with its detrimental effect on Pellegrini’s team and Arsenal’s own inability to capitalize on our Top of The League position after the New Year Day’s fixtures starting with the disappointing 3 – 3 draw at Anfield.

Leicester were also blessed with the fact that they are club without a playing philosophy until Nigel Pearson introduced a playing style that was adopted by Claudio Ranieri. Arsenal and Arsene have a playing philosophy and this in itself can be something of an albatross sometimes. It is easy for many who see winning as the only thing that matters to disagree with this playing philosophy issue but please listen to top managers including Pep Guardiola and you will appreciate that philosophy and identity are not like clothes that can be taken off willy-nilly. Alex Ferguson in two Champion League finals versus Barcelona did not change his style of play and lost both finals. As far as Arsene sticks to his playing philosophy and as long as we are unable to attract the top talents coming into the Premier League, it will take the same type of stars aligning as it happened for Leicester for Arsenal under Arsene to win the league.

If Arsene were to abandon his philosophy right now and right here. Put 10 men behind the ball, play dirty and cynical, cheat, create an intimidating atmosphere for referees like Ferguson did, I make bold to say we will challenge for the league like Leicester too and maybe like Ranieri achieved one title win in his 30 year managerial career, Wenger can finally add to his 3 titles by wining another one for Arsenal within the next 4 years before he retires.

Platini: Sepp Blatter is the most selfish person I have seen in my life

Former UEFA president, Michel Platini, has labelled disgraced former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, as “the most selfish person”.

Platini left office in December 2015, when he was banned from football for an initial eight years by FIFA ethics committee, over a £1.3million payment made to him on the instruction of Blatter, who suffered the same fate.

Both men have had their bans reduced to six years, but Platini’s was later cut to four.

And regarding his former friend Blatter, Platini told French newspaper Le Monde: “In the end, he tried to save his own skin.

“Blatter does not defend anyone else, he never defended me. He’s the most selfish person I have seen in my life.”

Platini says their relationship collapsed during the May 2015’s FIFA presidential election.

“He always said I would be his last scalp,” he added.

“I know he was fixated on me, to the end, ever since the ‘enough is enough’ comment on May 28, 2015, even without considering the jealousy he had for the footballer I was.”

Diego Maradona to lobby FIFA over Messi’s four-match ban

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has said that he will speak to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, to see if Lionel Messi‘s four-match ban can be reduced.

Messi was handed the punishment over a foul-mouthed rant at a match official.

The incident happened during the Albiceleste’s 1-0 win over Chile, in which Messi scored the winning goal from the penalty spot. The Barcelona superstar was adjudged to have used abusive language towards an assistant referee during the match.

Messi has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£8,100) and will miss World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru.

The next game he will be available for, is the final match against Ecuador.

“Messi’s ban is excessive and terrible,” Maradona told Buenos Aires-based radio station La Oral Deportiva.

“Very shortly I will meet with Infantino in Bahrain and as usual, I will tell him what I think.”

Messi in a letter to FIFA, claimed that he did not insult the official, but shouted “to the air”.

FIFA Reveal Qualifying Criteria For 48-Team World Cup

The Bureau of the FIFA Council has recommended UEFA receive 16 slots in the new 48-team World Cup format, which starts from 2026, while proposing a six-team play-off to decide the final two places.

The Bureau, which comprises FIFA president Gianni Infantino and the presidents of the six confederations, met in Zurich and agreed on the slot allocation for the expanded event. The decision will now be submitted to the FIFA Council for ratification in May.

Six direct slots each will be awarded to CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, eight to the AFC, nine to CAF and 16 to UEFA, while the OFC will receive one direct slot. The two remaining teams will be decided by a six nation play-off.

New UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has campaigned for 16 places at the game’s global showpiece, ideally with one team in each of the proposed 16 groups of three.

The proposed allocation includes automatic qualification for the host nation, with its slot taken from the quota of its confederation, while the play-off tournament for the two unallocated slots will feature one team per confederation – with the exception of UEFA.

One additional team from the confederation of the host country will qualify for the play-off, and of the six teams involved two will be seeded based on the FIFA World Ranking. The seeded teams will play the winners of knock-out matches between the four unseeded teams to determine who will reach the World Cup.

The play-off tournament will be held in the country hosting the main event with November 2025 suggested as the date for the first edition.

I want to Play in a Team with A winning mentality – Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez has said that he wants to play in a “winning team with winning mentality”.

The Chile international’s future is uncertain, with his current deal with Arsenal entering into its final year.

The Gunners crashed out of the Champions League after a 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich and face a uphill task to qualify for next season’s competition.

Alexis, who has a £50 million price tag on his head, says he may be willing to stay if the mentality in the team improves.

“I’d like to stay in the city, but for a team that is winning, that has a winning mentality,” he is quoted by El Grafico as having said.

“I am happy in London and I hope to finish my contract with Arsenal. Hopefully, Arsenal can push to win the big titles.

“I’m 28, I still have a lot ahead of me. I am a player that takes great care of myself.”Alexis Sanchez has said that he wants to play in a “winning team with winning mentality”.

I am totally against mid-season friendly match – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he is “totally against” international friendlies following injuries to key central defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones on England duty.

Mourinho expects to be without five first-team players against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, including the injured Paul Pogba and suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“I am totally against the friendly matches,” Mourinho told Sky Sports, after Jones had to withdraw from the England squad with a toe injury suffered in a training ground clash with Smalling, who pulled out after sustaining a leg injury in the Germany friendly.

Both defenders missed England’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Lithuania, leading Mourinho to question the need for friendlies during the season.

“I think friendly matches for the national team only make sense before the final phases,” he said.

“A couple of weeks before the Euros or a couple of weeks before the World Cup makes sense. But mid-season friendly matches mixed with qualification matches, I don’t think that makes sense.

“On top of that the matches are not really big matches so I am not a big fan. But I think one day I will be there so I cannot be very critical.”

Mourinho, who had 13 players away on international duty, believes his side will be at a disadvantage when they resume Premier League action at Old Trafford this weekend.

“If you compare our situation with our opponents, West Brom, only one player on international duty,” Mourinho told this week’s Soccer Saturday programme, underestimating the number of Baggies players who joined up with their national teams in the past fortnight.

“They had time to work, time to rest and prepare. It’s going to be hard.”

Schweinsteiger ready for Chicago Fire debut after first practice

Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed that he did not get the chance to properly say goodbye to his Manchester United teammates before signing for Chicago Fire, after being introduced by the team on Wednesday and taking part in his first training.

The German’s move to the Major League Soccer club was officially confirmed by United on Wednesday afternoon after the formality of his visa had been resolved.

Schweinsteiger’s stay at Old Trafford ended last week after he agreed to join Chicago Fire on a one-year contract for a reported salary of US dollars $4.5million (£3.6m).

But so rushed was the deal, he revealed he did not have the opportunity to bid farewell to the United players, who were busy preparing for their Premier League game away at Middlesbrough.

Speaking to the press on his unveiling, Schweinsteiger said: “It was not so easy because the decision was a bit late so I couldn’t say a proper goodbye to the team.

“Also they had a match away against — I can’t remember — but they had a match on Sunday so I couldn’t really tell them because I didn’t want the focus on me, I wanted to have the focus on the team and the game. So I was very happy that they won.

“I had a great time there, especially with the teammates and the staff there, it was a good time and I enjoyed it there.”

Schweinsteiger could make his debut for Chicago Fire, who finished last in the Eastern Conference last season, winning just seven of their 34 matches, this weekend when they face Montreal Impact at Toyota Park.

The 32-year-old said: “I am ready. I was preparing before I came here and, of course, I need some days more training but I feel I am ready whenever the coach needs me.

“I need more training sessions to have the right rhythm, where I want to see myself, but my head is more than 100 percent and I feel quite comfortable. The training session was pretty intense today and I could do it, so that was good.”

Why Super Eagles won’t play friendlies in London again – Rohr

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said that London will not be a choice of venue for their next international friendly.

The German was speaking after their second game in this FIFA window against Burkina Faso was cancelled.

The match was called off, after some Burkina Faso players failed to get British visas. Four days before, Nigeria held Senegal to a 1-1 draw at The Hive Stadium in London.

“Getting UK visas is too complicated, you know,” Rohr told newsmen.

“I think it’s better to stay in Schengen, in Europe than go to London where the people have problems. Even some players in our team couldn’t come, you know. They didn’t get the visa in time.

“We tried to find another team but it was too late.

“We had one very good game against a Senegal team that was so strong, so powerful, we learned a lot. Now we look forwards to our next games.

“The second game, between us, I could see everybody.

“Some players need to play because they don’t play all the time at their clubs. It was an opportunity for them.”

It will be difficult to beat Nigeria to 2018 World Cup ticket – Algeria’s Sofiane Feghouli

Algeria and West Ham midfielder, Sofiane Feghouli, has admitted that it will be difficult for his country, to beat Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup ticket.

The Desert Foxes are currently bottom of African qualifying Group B with one point, five behind leaders, the Super Eagles.

Reigning African champions, Cameroon is second with two points, while Zambia is third with just one point.

“I think the World Cup is the very best competition in terms of the feelings and emotions that it generates,” Feghouli told West Ham official website on Tuesday.

“If you haven’t played in it, you can’t know exactly what it means. I was lucky enough to play in it in 2014 and Algeria played very well. It was a dream come true for millions of Algerians and we made history by reaching the last 16 for the first time.

“We played a historic tie against Germany in which we were on the verge of knocking them out. I was very happy and proud to take part in that incredible adventure.

“I’d like to play in it again in 2018, although it will be very difficult to qualify.”

I’m happy at Manchester City – Iheanacho

Super Eagles’ striker Kelechi Iheanacho has ruled out any possibility of leaving English clubside Manchester City “any time soon’’, saying he was happy to be part of the team.

Newsmen report that in spite of some impressive outings, City manager Pep Guardiola has given Iheanacho only few playing opportunities. However, the striker on Tuesday vowed to stay on and fight for his place in the face of competition from Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. Iheanacho, who has scored seven goals from 24 appearances this season, said: “I’m very happy and very grateful to be in this team.

“I keep working hard every day and when I get my chance I have to prove to everyone I need to be in the squad. “It’s a great squad with great players. Everyone is working really hard. So, everyone should be happy being in this team. “It’s a great team. The supporters give us everything.

So, we need to keep fighting for the team and the fans. “I am improving every day. I keep learning and improving and that will help me in the future. I love it here,” he was quoted on the club’s website as saying.

Woodgate named new Middlesbrough coach

Former Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate has rejoined the Premier League club as first-team coach, the northeast side announced Tuesday. Boro parted company with former manager Aitor Karanka earlier this month, with his assistant Steve Agnew promoted as they try to avoid relegation from English football’s lucrative top flight.

Woodgate joins a new-look backroom staff that also includes former Scotland striker Joe Jordan. “Jonathan is someone who we know very well, and who in turn knows this club inside and out,” Agnew told Middlesbrough’s website.

“He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level of the game, and he’s a fantastic character. “We’re delighted to have him on board.” Woodgate, an ex-England international, had two spells at boyhood club Boro in a career that also saw him play for Leeds, Newcastle, Real Madrid and Tottenham during a distinguished playing career. Woodgate, 37, announced his retirement shortly after Middlesbrough won promotion to the Premier League in May 2016.

He has returned to the club before their key clash against relegation rivals Swansea on Sunday, which will be Agnew’s second match in charge.

Boro are currently five points from safety, but do have a game in hand on Swansea, with the Welsh club in the 17th place that is immediately above the relegation zone.

My dad never wanted me to play football – Wilfred Ndidi

Ndidi has been compared to N’Golo Kante due to their defensive abilities and massive work rate, but Ndidi isn’t perturbed by the comparison saying he plays his own game.

“No, I have never put myself in Kante’s shoes,” Ndidi told Goal. “I didn’t look to play like him when I arrived. I just came here to play my own game. I just feel like a different player to him.

“He is a good player, he has proved that he’s great this season. With the support of others, you can do anything you want and you can do it here.”

Talking about former manager, Claudio Ranieri, the manager who bought him and brought him to England, Ndidi told Goal.

“For Ranieri, I felt bad,” he said. “I don’t really talk about managers though. I am just here to play my football. It was sad that he left, though, because he brought me here but I just need to focus on my game. I am still playing.

“It is just football, everything became good. Everything started to come together. I never experienced any problems in the dressing room with any players.

“We were always happy in the dressing room and looking forward to games. Optimistic. We were focused on trying to win. When we lost, everyone was down, but I didn’t notice anything personally. I didn’t see anything strange.”

Talking about his move to Leicester from Belgium, where he played with Genk, Ndidi said:
“I have this mind to adapt quickly,” . “I didn’t find it very difficult. It is easy because everybody speaks English. I have a team-mate Ahmed Musa from Nigeria, which helps also.

Messi slapped With Four-Game Ban

The Barcelona forward will miss the match in La Paz on Tuesday evening and three more World Cup qualifiers after that after abusing an official

Lionel Messi will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Bolivia after being slapped with a four-game ban for a foul-mouthed rant at a match official.

The decision was communicated to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) just hours before their match in La Paz on Tuesday evening.

It followed an incident towards the end of the Albiceleste’s 1-0 victory over Chile last week, when the Barcelona star scored the only goal from the penalty spot.

Lionel Messi Alexis Sanchez Argentina Chile Eliminatorias Sudamericanas 2018

The 29-year-old was penalised for a foul and proceeded to wave his arms and shout insults at the referee’s assistant Marcelo van Gasse, with whom he refused to shake hands at the final whistle.

It was not initially recorded in referee Sandro Ricci’s report but was followed up by FIFA after video footage of Messi’s insult emerged. Both the officials and the AFA were subsequently asked for their observations.

Messi has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£8,100) and will also miss World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru before returning for the final match against Ecuador.

“This decision reflects the consistent case law that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has applied in previous and similar cases,” a FIFA statement reads.

Four South American teams are guaranteed a place at the finals and a fifth can also progress by winning an intercontinental play-off tie against a team from Oceania.

Argentina currently sit third in the regional table but are only two points ahead of Chile, who are the first team out of the qualifying spots in sixth.

Messi is one of five players suspended for the visit to Bolivia after Nicolas Otamendi, Javier Mascherano, Lucas Biglia and Gonzalo Higuain picked up yellow cards against Chile.

To compound coach Edgardo Bauza’s selection headache, Gabriel Mercado and Emmanuel Mas both suffered injuries in that match.

More encouraging for Argentina, however, is the fact that Bolivia have lost 10 of their 13 qualifiers so far despite their well-documented altitude advantage at Estadio Hernando Siles, which is one of the highest stadiums in the world at 3,637 metres above sea level.

Jose Mourinho is Unlucky – Ferguson

Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has noted that his successor, Jose Mourinho is “unlucky” not to see his side competing for the Premier League title this season.

Manchester United are currently fifth in the Premier League table after 27 league matches of Mourinho’s debut season in charge, and they trail leaders Chelsea by 17 points after drawing 10 of their top-flight games.

The scot gaffer, who won 13 Premier League titles while at Old Trafford, told SiriusXM FC, “I get on well with Jose and think he’s doing a really good job.

“He’s been a bit unlucky actually because there are home games this season they’ve been absolutely brilliant in but have drawn them.

“If they’d got those wins they deserved they’d be challenging for the league, there’s no doubt about that.”

The former Real Madrid boss has already led his side to silverware this season, securing a 3-2 win over Southampton in the EFL Cup last month.

Ferguson noted, “Winning a trophy at United is the most important thing.

“That’s what the club’s history is about — winning trophies.

“I looked upon the League Cup as the manager [Mourinho] does: this is an important trophy. I was fortunate to win it four times. It doesn’t matter what the trophy is, if you get to a final you want to win it.”

The Red Devils will host eighth-placed West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.

Manchester City Fined £35,000 By English FA

Manchester City have been fined £35,000 by the English Football Association.

City were penalised for their players’ behaviour during the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on March 19.

The club admitted to a misconduct charge for failing to ensure that their players conduct themselves in an orderly fashion.

It followed an incident “in or around the 50th minute”, when referee Michael Oliver awarded Liverpool a penalty.

James Milner scored from the spot, with Sergio Aguero equalising on 69 minutes.

Both Gael Clichy, who was penalised for a raised boot on Roberto Firmino, and David Silva were booked after Oliver pointed to the spot.

“I Played As a Goalkeeper in Jail Games”- Arsenal star Alexis reveals

The Gunners forward says his desire to take in games wherever possible in his younger years saw him grace some rather unusual playing fields

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez has graced some of the finest stadiums in the world, and also a Chilean jail as a goalkeeper.

A distinguished playing career has carried the Chilean from his homeland to Emirates Stadium via Udinese and Barcelona.

He was, however, to take the first tentative steps on that journey in more humble surroundings.

While growing up in South America, Alexis was eager to find game time wherever possible. That meant going wherever there was competition and playing in any position asked of him.

Occasionally his quest would lead him down some unusual avenues, but it is those experiences which have helped to make him the world-class talent he is today.

Alexis Sanchez jail

Alexis told Arsenal Player on his experiences as a football-mad youngster: “I wanted to be a professional footballer from when I was small.

“My mental approach was always to win and to go as far as possible playing football.

“I was always playing in tournaments and initially I played in goal. I was happy as long as I was playing football. I played with older people all the time – many of whom I really liked.

“[I played] in the street, but we also used to go to the local jail to play. We played with the people there on a dirt pitch, and I played in goal.”

Moving up the field has certainly been the right call for Alexis, with the 28-year-old now one of the finest attackers on the planet.

Arsenal bought into that ability when splashing out £31 million to sign him from Barcelona and will be hoping to keep him on their books as contract extension talks drag on in north London.

Chelsea’s Aina Debuts As Super Eagles Secure Draw

Chelsea defender Ola Aina made his first appearance for Nigeria in a closed door friendly between two teams formed from the Super Eagles squad at the Hive Stadium in London.

Also making an appearance at your in the encounter were Eberchi Eze from Queens Park Rangers, Chuba Akpom, Noah Bazee, Tyronne Ebuehi and Manchester City defender Nathan Oseni.

The match was played in place of a botched friendly against Burkina Faso at the same venue after seven Stallions players failed to secure entry visas to fly into the United Kingdom.
The game ended 1-1 with Kelechi Iheanacho and Kayode Olanrewaju on target for both sides.

Stand-in skipper Ogenyi Onazi led a Team ‘A’ side comprising of Daniel Akpeyi, Leon Balogun, Ola Aina, William-Troost Ekong, Elderson Echiejile, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi.

The Team ‘B’ side captained by Kenneth Omeruo had Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal, Tyronne Ebuehi at right-back, Chidozie Awaziem, Juwon Oshaniwa at left-back, Shehu Abudulahi, John Ogu in central midfield, Kayode Olanrewaju, Isaac Success, Ebere Eze.

According to Super Eagles media officer of the team, Toyin Ibitoye, the game was a good test for the squad.

He also told Completesportsnigeria.com from the team’s camp in London that the players were excited to represent the country at international level.

Ibitoye also added that several foreign-born players of Nigerian descent are eager to play for the Super Eagles.

“The mood in camp is awesome and the players coming in for the first time are fully committed to representing Nigeria at the international level so it’s a good omen for the team,” Ibitoye told newsmen.

FIFA to pay Seamus Coleman’s Everton wages while out with broken leg

FIFA will pay Seamus Coleman’s Everton wages while he recovers from his double leg break.

The governing body’s Club Protection Programme enables teams to claim up to £112,731 (€143,836) per week of a player’s wages if he is injured while on international duty.

Coleman is understood to earn around £45,000 a week at the Toffees and could be out for as long as a year after fracturing both the tibia and fibula bones in his lower-right leg.

Coleman underwent successful surgery in Dublin on Saturday following a challenge from Wales’ left-back Neil Taylor, who was shown a straight red card for the challenge, during the Republic of Ireland’s 0-0 draw against Wales in World Cup qualifying.

FIFA’s Club Protection Programme was set up in 2012 after mounting pressure from clubs trying to claim compensation for players being injured on international duty.

Club’s pay an excess fee equivalent to the value of four weeks’ wages and can then be covered for the duration of a player’s absence, up to the value of £100m.

That value, however, covers all players injured on international duty over the course of the international calendar year.

You Won’t Win African Player Of The Year Award Without Super Eagles – Pinnick Warns Moses

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has told Chelsea wingback, Victor Moses, to be more committed to the national team or miss out on winning the African Footballer of the Year award.

Moses reported to the team’s camp ahead of the friendly against Senegal, but returned to the Premier League club, after claiming he was carrying a knock.

It is understood that coach Gernot Rohr was visibly angry with the player , who had previously pulled out of a

In an interview recently, NFF President Amaju Pinnick, said: “Moses needs to understand that with his current performance with Chelsea, he stands a chance of becoming the next African player of the year, especially if his club should win the EPL title.

“But he needs to play regularly for the national team to make such dream come true. To be honest, Moses is one of the best African players at the moment, but as I said, he needs the Super Eagles.”

Speaking further, Pinnick, who is expected to join the Super Eagles camp in London today, revealed he had a chat with Moses yesterday “and during our conversation, Moses said that he actually wanted to play in the friendly against Senegal but for the injury. He is coming to see me tomorrow (today) when I arrive in London.”

Moses was expected to feature in the second friendly against Burkina Faso, which has now been called off.

AFCON Qualifiers: Bafana Can Upstage Super Eagles – SAFA Boss

South Africa Football Association President has expressed confidence that the country’s senior men’s national team Bafana Bafana can qualify ahead of the Super Eagles for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Bafana defeated Guinea-Bissau in a friendly in Durban on Saturday in preparation for the AFCON qualifiers.

South Africa are in Group E alongside Nigeria, Libya and Seychelles in the qualifying group for the 2019 AFCON.

“You all played very well. This was very important for us to see how we match up against Guinea-Bissau,” Jordaan told SAFA.net, referring to Bafana.

“Remember this team was very unfortunate not go to the second round of the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon earlier this year. They narrowly lost to Cameroon – the eventual winners – so they are a quality team.

“The way you played, you made it look too easy. Congratulations, this is what we wanted to see. The next stop is East London against Angola and we want to win that match as well, then we go for the qualifications of AFCON and the World Cup.

“I want to wish you all the best in your next matches and thank you for your commitment – let us continue to march on this road. You saw the crowd really enjoyed the quality of football that you produced. You have done very well and you have played the kind of football that made us enjoy the game.

“You may know that as Bafana Bafana we are pursuing four competitions this year – the COSAFA Cup, the CHAN but the two qualifications we want most are AFCON and the World Cup – the qualification for AFCON starts in June.

“There are 12 groups, and the top team in the group qualifies automatically, and that is twelve teams that go through. Then there are four best second placed teams – in other words any team in any group, if you lose one match and you end up second, you will get one of those places as one of the best second-placed team.

“What we want as the Association, whatever the mix, no matter how you get there, we want to be in the final 16 of AFCON in 2019.

“We start in Nigeria against Nigeria. it’s a huge challenge but if we can get over that we will be on our way. Also the next two matches for the World Cup qualifiers are against Cape Verde home and away. Again if we get a good start in those two matches we are very close to Russia 2018. Good luck once again, you have our support.”

South Africa will host Angola on Tuesday in East London, in another friendly game.

Aina has made six appearances for Chelsea this term in all competitions.

Josh has made five appearances for the Black cats with four of the coming in the Football League Trophy tournament (U23s) and one in the English Football league game against QPR where he came on in the 68th minute for Lynden Gooch.

Eze’s only appearance for QPR this season was in the English FA Cup. He featured for 18 minutes in QPR’s 2-1 loss to Blackburn on the 7th of January, 2017.

The trio will be assessed by the Super Eagles technical crew it was gathered from a media release.

I Am Glad My Son Chose Nigeria – Tyronne Ebuehi’s Dad

Marvin Ebuehi says he is pleased that his first son Tyronne Ebuehi has finally committed to Nigeria after the misunderstanding that trailed his first call-up by fatherland.

“I must confess to you that I am glad that he has finally committed to Nigeria. I am very proud as a father. The first call-up, there was a misunderstanding and things went the way they did, unfortunately,” Marvin told thenff.com.

“I apologise for that misunderstanding. I have always said that he would have to play for Nigeria at senior level, because I am proud of my country.”

Ebuehi, an Amsterdam-based businessman was at the Super Eagles’ Crowne Plaza London Ealing hotel on Saturday with Dutch wife, Toos.

“Tyronne has always been crazy about football from an early age. I put him in an academy at the age of six and I’m not surprised that he’s on the way to living his dream,” he explained.

Tyronne’s sister Tyvanne is a UK-based model and brother Trevin is a student in Holland.

“I am praying that Tyronne fulfills his ambition of playing for a big club in Europe, and also become an important player for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.”

Danny Blind sacked as Netherlands coach

Danny Blind has been sacked as Netherlands head coach, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has confirmed.

Ajax great Blind was appointed as Guus Hiddink’s successor midway through the Oranje’s ill-fated qualification bid for Euro 2016.

A chastening 2-0 loss to Bulgaria on Saturday left the beaten 2010 World Cup finalists facing the prospect of missing out on a second major tournament in succession.

Blind admitted his decision to select 17-year-old Ajax prospect Matthijs de Ligt for what turned out to be a nightmare debut in defence was an error and afterwards stated he would consider his future.

On Sunday, the 55-year-old’s employers made the decision for him.

“We have respect for what Danny did for us and for the team during his tenure,” KNVB director Jean Paul Decossaux said in a statement.

“But because the sporting results are unfortunately disappointing, and because qualifying for the World Cup in Russia is now in difficulty, we unfortunately feel forced to relieve him.”

Blind added: “We were on a good roll. I think the game against Bulgaria was decisive.

“I gave everything I had. It’s too bad that it stops with this now.”

Under-21 boss Fred Grim will take interim charge when Netherlands host Italy in a friendly at the Amsterdam Arena. Their next Group A qualifier is at home to minnows Luxembourg in June.

Netherlands are fourth in Group A, six points behind leaders France and three shy of play-off incumbents Sweden.

Hicham El Amrani Resigns As CAF Secretary General

African Football Confederation Secretary-General Hicham El Amrani resigned on Sunday without giving an explanation, according to AFP. The 37-year-old Moroccan revealed his decision in a letter to African national football associations.

His move is probably linked to the defeat of long-serving Cameroonian Issa Hayatou by Malagasy outsider Ahmad Ahmad in the CAF presidential election this month.

El Amrani was a Hayatou loyalist, constantly defending his boss, who ruled African football for 29 years, against public and media criticism. He became secretary-general, initially on an interim basis, in 2010 when Egyptian Mustapha Fahmy moved to global football body FIFA. Ahmad, who will serve a four-year term, is scheduled to meet CAF staff on Monday at the Cairo headquarters of the 60-year-old organisation.

Mbappe could partner Benzema next season – Real Madrid president

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, has hinted at a possible move for Monaco striker, Kylian Mbappe.

The 18-year-old is possibly the most sought-after youngster in Europe, after an incredible season with the Ligue 1 side.

Mbappe has scored 19 goals already this campaign, to help his side to the top of the league and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“A duo of Benzema and Mbappé?. Everything is possible, but at this time of the season, I don’t want to talk about that,” Perez told Radio Montecarlo.

Perez also insisted he wants to keep Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu next season.

“Karim is a mix of Zidane and Ronaldo. He is the best No.9 in the world,” he added.
“I am convinced that he will stay and while now we do not talk about renewals, if it was up to me, I would keep him here during his whole sporting life.

“I am very happy with Benzema and he has exemplary behaviour.”

Neymar: Coutinho would totally fit at Barcelona

Barcelona forward, Neymar, has said Coutinho would “totally fit” at the Camp Nou.

He named his Brazil team-mate as one Premier League player, he would love to see at the Spanish club.

Neymar and Coutinho are on international duty, preparing to play Uruguay in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.

In a pre-recorded interview with PokerStars, Neymar hailed the Liverpool playmaker’s ability.

“A Premier League player that I would like to have in Barcelona is Coutinho,” Neymar said.

“I believe Philippe Coutinho is a player that would totally fit in Barcelona.”

Neymar was then asked about his starring performance, as Barca overcame a four-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain and leading his country to Olympic Gold.

“I believe that, in terms of importance, it was one of the best [performances] and in terms of emotion, it was the highest.

“It overcame the Olympics, the Confederations Cup and the Champions League final.

“The emotion of the sixth goal, everything we felt there, in that moment, overcame any game I have ever played.

“Nevertheless, in terms of importance, the Olympics were the most important,” he said.

UEFA fine Barcelona 19,000 euros for pitch invasion against PSG

Barcelona have been fined €19,000, for the celebrations that followed their historic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Neymar inspired the La Liga champions, to overturning a four-goal deficit to win 6-1 in the second leg at the Camp Nou.

Sergi Roberto’s stoppage-time clincher, sparked wild scenes among the home fans with some of them invading the pitch.

UEFA has now decided to fine Barca for “improper conduct of the team”. They picked up five yellow cards in the match.

Earlier this week, UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, said that Deniz Aytekin, the referee who officiated the game, will not be suspended for his performance.

PSG had reportedly written to UEFA last week, to complain about Aytekin’s refereeing.
But Ceferin said there would be no sanctions for the referee.

“We will not suspend the referee from that match, referees are not suspended,” he said.
“When something doesn’t go well, we discuss it – but it is not a matter for suspension.

“That would be like suspending a player who missed a penalty kick when he should simply go to the bench if he misses many penalty shots.”

Barcelona were trailing 4-0 from the first leg and were awarded two penalties at the Camp Nou, as they overturned the four-goal deficit. One of them given for Marquinhos’ foul on Luis Suarez was particularly controversial.

Senegal Friendly Good Preparation For Cameroon – Rohr

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr says the international friendly against Senegal will benefit his team when they face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in August in Uyo.

The Super Eagles came from a goal down to hold Senegal to a 1-1 draw in Thursday’s friendly game at The Hive in London.

Moussa Sow gave Senegal the lead on 54 minutes before Kelechi Iheanacho equalised for the Super Eagles from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.

In his post-match press conference, Rohr said the Senegalese will give his players an insight on what to expect against Cameroon come August.

“We chose Senegal to prepare us for a physical Cameroon,” Rohr stated. “We don’t have the power of Senegal but we are learning and getting there.”

On the injuries sustained by Ogenyi Onazi and Ahmed Musa who had to be replaced, Rohr said: “He (Onazi) suffered a serious back injury. He’ll have a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury. We’ll observe Musa too.”

David Moyes Desperate For Anichebe’s Return

Sunderland manager, David Moyes, is hopeful that Victor Anichebe will be back in action sooner than expected.

The Nigerian striker has not played for the relegation-threatened Premier League side, since he suffered a knee ligament injury in their 2-0 loss to West Brom in January.

Moyes revealed that Anichebe is out running and says he is waiting for the medical department to give him the green light.

“We hope that Victor could be back and maybe Catts,” Moyes told SunderlandEcho.

“I think Catts could get some training in but the one we’re really looking to see if we can get back is Victor.

“There are no guarantees but I know Victor’s doing a bit more running and hopefully getting closer.

“My bigger worry is how they can get a level of match fitness to make a difference and help us in such a short time.

“I have to hope that we can get them back and give ourselves another dimension, even if it’s getting them back off the bench late on.

“I’ll probably play one [a friendly] this week because we have three games in a week coming up and we’ll need the squad of players we’ve got.”

Football is not just about winning trophies – Wenger

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said football is not just about winning trophies.

Wenger stated this while defending his record during his 20 years in charge of the Gunners and insists he has built an “absolutely remarkable” club.

The 67-year-old has come under serious pressure recently with the team performing below par, but reports say he has been offered a two-year contract extension.

Wenger has not won the league title since 2004 and in an interview with beIN Sports, he was quick to point out that Liverpool have never won it in the Premier League era.

“For me Arsenal is the best club in the world and what we have built is absolutely remarkable, not only on the results front but on the values that this club, what we have built. Of course a football club is about winning, it’s as well about values.

“Nobody talks about that anymore but sport is as well about values and I think integrity, respect, humility, togetherness are very important qualities and if you would visit our club you would see that they really exist on a daily basis. That is part of what I am proud as well.

“You can basically say that if you don’t win the championship it is not a successful season and I can understand that but you take clubs like Liverpool and they have not won the Premier League, they are a big club.

“You have clubs like Man City, Man United, certainly the championship will be won by Chelsea so we have all, and no matter how many we are, Tottenham, all these clubs, every year only one will win it,” Wenger said.

Jay Jay Okocha Impressed By Super Eagles’ Team Spirit Ahead Of Friendlies

Former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has commended the team spirit in the camp of the Super Eagles ahead of the friendlies against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

The Eagles face Senegal on Thursday night and Burkina Faso on Monday, both at The Hive in London.

Okocha currently in Nairobi, Kenya, for the 2017 Barclays Kenya Open Tournament where he will participate as a guest golfer tweeted his satisfaction with the camaradarie among the players after watching videos of team bonding sessions posted by John Ogu.

“Amazing team spirit guys…Isaac Success trying out @iam_davido song. Welcome indeed to the @Supereagles,” Okocha said.

The videos show newcomers Success, Tyrone Ebuehi, Olanrewaju Kayode and Noah-Joel Sarenren-Bazee either singing or dancing in ‘initiation rites’ as others cheer them on.

The wheelchairs and crutches, valued at tens of millions of naira,  will also be given to physically challenged non-athletes in Surulere, Orile Iganmu, Lagos Island and Yaba.
According to a representative of Martins, 2000 wheelchairs and 3000 crutches were distributed to special athletes in the first phase of the charity work in Lagos.
The manager of the Obafemi Martins Foundation, Deji Olusesan, told newsmen that the first set of beneficiaries for the wheelchairs were the Paralympians who represented Nigerian at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
“Giving out these items is nothing to Martins because God has blessed him and he has also made a pledge to always give back to the society,” Olusesan told newsmen on Wednesday.
“The first phase of this donation is on now, while the second phase will be in April. Aside from these wheelchairs, some relief materials will be donated specially to the physically challenged.”
Martins, who has played for the Super Eagles, Inter Milan, Newcastle United, Wolfsburg, Rubin Kazan, Levante and Seattle Sounders before making a big money move to Shanghai Shenhua in China, has often donated money to orphanages and the sick who cannot afford their hospital bills.

I told Conte to let me return to Atletico Madrid – Costa

Chelsea striker, Diego Costa, has admitted he told manager, Antonio Conte to allow him return to Atletico Madrid, but the move fell through because the Spanish club was not patient during negotiations.

Following a frustrating 2015/2016 season, Costa was keen to move back to the Vicente Calderon last summer.

Although Atletico were open to a deal, they showed a lack of patience and discussions broke down.

Costa stayed at Stamford Bridge and his 17 goals have helped Conte’s men go 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

“Atletico knows I have a special feeling for the team, I lived the best moment of my career there. El Cholo [Diego Simeone] knows it wasn’t impossible for me to come back to Atletico,” he told El Larguero.

“The relationship with Conte didn’t start well because when he arrived I told him I wanted to go to Atletico. Chelsea’s fans love me a lot, even more than in Atletico, figure that!

“When Atletico had to wait for me they didn’t, there was still a month to go in the transfer market.

“I’ve done everything to come back to Atletico Madrid but I wouldn’t fight the same to return. When Atletico didn’t wait for me, I had to go to Conte with the tail between my legs.”

Ronaldo crowned Portugal 2016 best player

Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been named Portugal’s Player of the Year for 2016.

Ronaldo led his country to their first major title at the European Championship last summer.

He beat club teammate Pepe and Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio to the prize.

The 32-year-old forward also led Real Madrid to their 11th Champions League triumph last May, converting the winning penalty to secure the title ahead of Atletico Madrid.

He also finished as the competition’s top scorer with 16 goals.

Ronaldo sustained early injury in the Euro 2016 final against hosts France, but Portugal pushed on to win the game in extra-time, marking the national team’s greatest-ever triumph at the Stade de France last July.

Ronaldo said at the Quinas de Ouro gala on Monday, “It was a very special year for me because the Euros was the only trophy I was still missing.

“I want to thank the Portuguese people again, they gave us confidence on our way to the title.”

Other award-winners on the night included Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches, who won the best young player award.

Bastian Schweinsteiger set to leave Man. United for MLS side, Chicago Fire.

Manchester United have agreed to let midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger join MLS side Chicago Fire.

A deal between the clubs was agreed on Monday and is subject to a medical and visa being secured.

The former Germany captain, 32, has signed a one-year contract, according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper.

“I’ve always sought opportunities where I hoped to make a positive impact,” Schweinsteiger said in the Tribune. “My move to Chicago Fire is no different.”

Schweinsteiger, who led Germany to World Cup victory in 2014, had talks with Chicago Fire last year but opted to stay at United beyond the end of the January window.

However, Fire requested the midfielder join them now and, as Schweinsteiger was unlikely to play any significant part at United for the remainder of the season, the Old Trafford club have sanctioned his exit.

Last week, he trained with some junior members of the United squad while the remainder prepared for their Europa League game against FC Rostov.

“In the locker room, he will be a huge example of a champion,” Chicago Fire manager Veljko Paunovic told the Tribune.

“He still is somebody that can show that on the field and [demonstrate] how our guys have to work, prepare, behave, think and work together in order to get to that level.”

Schweinsteiger, who was signed by the Old Trafford club under former boss Louis van Gaal in July 2015, trained alone or with the Under-23 side at United after Jose Mourinho took over as manager last summer.

He returned to the first-team set-up before a Europa League game against Fenerbahce in November and played his first game for the club this season in an EFL Cup win over West Ham on 30 November.

However, he has made just three further appearances for the club – scoring one goal – with his last outing coming as a substitute against Saint-Etienne in the Europa League on 22 February.

I didn’t Want to Move to Barcelona – Iniesta

Now 32 years old, the midfielder needed a lot of convincing to leave his family behind at a young age

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta revealed he did not want to leave his hometown to join the Spanish giants as a youngster.

Spain international Iniesta, 32, was 12 when he uprooted himself from Fuentealbilla in Albacete for Barcelona after making trips with his family to meet club officials.

Reflecting on his early career, Iniesta said he needed a lot of convincing to leave his family behind at such a young age.

“The first response was that I did not want to come because I put my family bond before going to a place so far away and without them,” Iniesta told beIN Sports.

“The passage of the weeks and talk with my father made me see it as a challenge.

“With my father I have a lot of confidence, a lot of affinity and I know that when he tells me things, he usually succeeds.

“I respect my father and I knew I had to take the plunge. After that, it was the worst months of my life as a person, but with the help of everyone, day by day, it was much better.”

Iniesta has since gone on to win eight La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns and numerous other trophies.

The veteran midfielder has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season as Barca bid to retain their La Liga title and win the Champions League.

Chelsea to prevent Victor Moses from Super Eagles friendlies

Victor Moses could still pull out of Nigeria’s international friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso this weekend, despite featuring for Chelsea in their 2-1 win over Stoke City last weekend.

Moses picked up a calf problem in their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup last Monday and was set to miss three weeks of action.

But he started for Antonio Conte’s side at the Britannia, as they continued their march towards the Premier League title.

However, Chelsea have informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the player is injured.

“Chelsea have confirmed Victor Moses’ injury but he has not fully pulled out of the Super Eagles squad yet,” an NFF insider said.

The Super Eagles play Senegal on March 23 and Burkina Faso four days later, both at the Hive Stadium in London.

Sir Alex Ferguson to return as Manchester United manager

Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout to manage the Manchester United 2008 XI, in Michael Carrick’s testimonial game this year.

This was confirmed via the Premier League club’s official Twitter handle on Monday morning.

Ferguson stepped down as manager of the Red Devils after the 2012/2013 season.

Harry Redknapp, who managed the former England midfielder at West Ham United, will be in charge of the Michael Carrick All-Star XI.

“I think the best bit will be seeing the players, to be honest with you,” Ferguson told MUTV.

“No [I don’t miss managing]. I miss the big games of course but I made my decision and I’m enjoying it. I don’t have to worry about you lads or the agents or the press conferences and having to control that press secretary of mine!

“I’m delighted Michael is getting a testimonial. It tells you Manchester United are probably the only club in England that can do that. Players do tend to stay a long time here. We don’t have players here one minute and gone the next. If you go right back to my time, most of the players stayed 10 or even more years. I think we can be proud of that fact, being a family-type club. It encourages players to put roots down here and enjoy it.

“I read about what Michael’s intentions are [with the funds raised for the event] and I think it’s very honourable. I think he’s shown he’s prepared to share his success and his contribution to the charity, starting it himself, will be very, very worthwhile.”

The testimonial will be played on June 8 and kick-off is 4pm.

Carragher: I never expected Victor Moses to have a future at Chelsea

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has admitted that he never expected Victor Moses to have a future at Chelsea.

Antonio Conte has given Moses a chance at Stamford Bridge this season, after the Super Eagles star spent the last three years on loan with Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham.

The Premier League leaders rewarded Moses with a two-year contract extension earlier this month

Carragher says he did not expect him to turn his Chelsea career around remarkably.

“Another thing you want a manager to do is improve players — and look at Victor Moses. I never expected him to have a future at Chelsea,” Carragher wrote in Daily Mail.

“Given he had been out on loan so much, and the levels he has shown have taken me by complete surprise. He has been excellent in his new role of right wing back.”

Toure may join Manchester United – Agent

Yaya Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, has suggested the player is ready to leave Manchester City in the summer and would consider a move to city rivals, Manchester United.

Toure’s current deal at the Etihad runs out at the end of this season.

And with manager Pep Guardiola looking to freshen up his squad ahead of next season, the Ivorian midfielder could be on his way out.

Seluk is quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “If we get a good offer from another club we will sign immediately.

“Mourinho is a very good manager and Toure played with Zlatan at Barcelona.

“If Manchester United make an offer I’ll negotiate, no problem.

“[Have Manchester United made an offer] I can’t speak about individual clubs.”

Maybe Man Utd is too big for Mourinho!’ – Keane

The former Red Devils captain has slammed the current manager at Old Trafford after the Portuguese complained about heavy fixture congestion

Manchester United great Roy Keane questioned whether his former club is perhaps “too big” for manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite reaching the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Rostov on Thursday, Mourinho moaned about United’s busy run of fixtures and claimed his squad was struggling with fatigue..

Keane, a former captain and seven-time Premier League winner at United, was furious with Mourinho, saying the Portuguese tactician needed to embrace the demands of managing at Old Trafford.

“I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life. Why do we have to listen to that garbage? It’s just utter nonsense what he’s talking about,” the Irishman told ITV.

“He’s manager of Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs on the planet, the squad he’s got, the players and he keeps moaning about fixtures and fatigue.

“We were just looking at some of the cup draws they’ve had. They’ve had an easy way in the cups, some good draws, a lot of home draws, and the guy is talking absolute nonsense.

“I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life. Maybe the club is too big for him, he can’t deal with all these demands at the match. What matches? Man United reserves could’ve won that game.”

United were beaten at Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday before overcoming Rostov, with a clash against Middlesbrough in the league awaiting them on Sunday.

Making matters worse for Mourinho, Paul Pogba and Daley Blind suffered injuries in the win over Rostov.

The odds against Hayatou had been mounting ahead of the polls with member countries of CAF forming strong click of young administrators pushing for change to ensure an end to Hayatou’s reign as CAF president.

Now that he has lost, African Football can receive true Leadership and can contest with other Continents seeing it always had potential to be one of the Best in the world, but for BAD LEADERSHIP.

Why I didn’t shake hands with Antonio Conte – Mourinho

Manchester United Manager, Jose Mourinho has revealed why he refused to shake hands with Chelsea Manager, Antonio Conte after Monday night’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Stamford Bridge.

During the Monday clash, Conte reacted angrily after one of a number of fouls on Eden Hazard in the first half, and there appeared to be a clash on the sideline between the two gaffers.

But the Portuguese Manager has insisted that they did not shake hands because he was prioritizing his players immediately after the game.

“If I see him here I will shake it. I didn’t because I thought my players deserved my action immediately and our supporters also deserved our thanks to them, so it was that.

“I can promise you that if I see him out there I will shake his hand. I have nothing to speak with him at all, but to shake his hand, for sure I will do that”, he said.

Jose Mourinho taunts Paul Pogba’s critics: ‘Maybe they need the money’

The France international, signed for a world record £89 million from Juventus in the summer, has endured a mixed first season back at Old Trafford under Mourinho’s tutelage.

Pogba was singled out for praise by Mourinho during Monday’s FA Cup defeat at the hands of Chelsea, despite his opposite number N’Golo Kante bossing midfield and deservedly walking away with the man-of-the match award.

The likes of Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand have been unimpressed by Pogba’s attitude of late but Mourinho believes the former Manchester United stars’ controversial views are simply born out of a desire to make money.

He said: ‘I am very happy with Paul. The club is very happy with Paul and I think the good thing is because of his personality he does not listen to what people say.

‘I feel the world is losing balance. Envy coming to certain levels I am scared for the next generation.

‘He came to Manchester as a teenager and fought for his career here. He reached the top of the world, nobody gave him anything.

I Will Never Coach Barcelona Again! – Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said he will never return to Barcelona.

The Spaniard has been tipped as one of the potential successors to Luis Enrique, who will quit at the end of this season.

Guardiola managed Barcelona between 2008 and 2012, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

“Never again,” he said when asked about a potential return. “My period at Barcelona is over.”

Guardiola was speaking ahead of City’s Champions League last-16 second leg tie against Monaco. The Premier League side hold a 5-3 lead ahead of the game in France.

“It would be a huge mistake to think about what we have done and forget about what we have to do,” Guardiola said.

“I want to see my team from the first minute want to win the game. We have to score goals.

“Monaco are a fantastic team. I invite the people to come here and they will see a good game tomorrow.

“The best way (to defend) is score goals. When one team scores that many goals and you think about just defending, you kill yourself.

“The idea is to try and attack. We scored five goals when it’s not easy to score against them.”

Guardiola added: “I am not thinking about being in the semi-finals seven times in a row. I am here to help Manchester City reach the next round.

“What I want is tomorrow to make a good game. I want to be in the quarter-finals, it would be a dream for me.”

Brazilian club sign goalkeeper convicted of murdering ex-girlfriend

Goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes, who was sent to prison for killing his ex-girlfriend and feeding her to his dogs, has signed for Brazilian second division club Boa Esporte.

Fernandes, known in Brazil as Bruno, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the 2010 murder of Eliza Samudio.

According to reports, that the former Flamengo player was released last month on a legal technicality.

“I am very happy for the opportunity I have been given,” said Bruno at a news conference.

The signing has been widely condemned in Brazil, and has sparked protests from fans and the withdrawal of several Boa Esporte sponsors.

Both Boa Esporte’s main sponsor, Gois and Silva Group, and kit maker Kanxa have removed themselves from association with the club as a result.

At his news conference, Bruno, who has been released pending an appeal, refused to answer questions about the murder of Ms Samudio, his former partner and mother of his child.

Although Ms Samudio was never found, Bruno’s cousin told the court her body had been fed to dogs.

Prosecutors said she was killed after demanding that Bruno pay child maintenance for their baby son.

At his trial, the footballer admitted to knowing that Ms Samudio had been strangled and her remains fed to dogs, but denied ordering the killing.

“I want to help Boa Esporte to get to the first division,” Bruno said after joining his new club.

“I thought several times that I wouldn’t make it. But I can’t throw in the towel, my wife wouldn’t accept it. I have to believe in me.”

The 32-year-old added he had been made “very welcome” in Varginha, the city where the club is based.

He said: “People demand a lot of me for what happened in the past. Boa Esporte is opening the doors for me.”

He has also said he did not rule out making Brazil’s national team, having once been tipped as a likely starter for the 2014 World Cup.

“One should always keep dreaming. One day I dreamed of making my comeback and I am now living this moment.”

Kelechi Iheanacho included in Guardiola’s squad for trip to Monaco

Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho was included in Manchester City’s squad that travelled on Tuesday to France, ahead of their second-leg, round of 16 Champions League tie against Monaco.

City won the first leg 5-3 at the Etihad.

Iheanacho’s last appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side in the competition was in their last group game against Borussia Monchengladbach, where he scored in their 1-1 draw.

He was an unused substitute for their win against Monaco two weeks ago.

Other players who made the trip included: Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane, Bacary Sagna and Aleksandr Kolarov.

Guardiola has vowed to attack the Ligue 1 leaders, despite holding a 2 goal lead.

Why Sevilla lost against Leicester City – Jorge Sampaoli

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli has insisted his team’s Champions League exit at the hands of Premier League Champions, Leicester City was “undeserved.”

The Foxes won the second leg 2-0 at the King Power Stadium, securing a 3-2 aggregate success.

Sevilla midfielder Samir Nasri and Sampaoli himself were both red carded in the second half, as the Leicester held firm following goals from Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton.

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel saved a penalty from Steven N’Zonzi after also keeping out a Joaquin Correa spot kick in the first leg.

Sampoali told a post-match news conference, “The setback of the first goal caused the team to get cold feet.

“Their goalkeeper was very important in both matches, saving two penalties. Beyond the pain, the players have to stick with their work.

“With 10 men, we still forced Leicester back to their goal, we were all over them in the second half and created dangerous situations, but it was difficult because they were playing at home.

“I think this result is undeserved. These types of games are resolved by important details and ours were worse.”

Nasri, was sent off after clashing heads with Jamie Vardy.

Both players were booked for the confrontation, but it was Nasri’s second yellow of the game.

He added, “Nasri? He contributed a lot when he was on the pitch.

“I don’t know about his red card, I was very far away from it and I couldn’t see him, but I hope he stays because he brings us a lot going forward.

“My dismissal? I don’t know why it happened. I think the fourth official got it wrong because all I did was complain about a bad goal we conceded.
“I see myself going to bed in pain tonight, thinking that a dream has gone.”

Arsenal confirm Bayern Munich rematch

Arsenal have announced that they will take on Bayern Munich in a friendly match this July in China.

The Gunners will play the Bundesliga champions in Shanghai on July 19, three days before they tackle Chelsea at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing.

Arsene Wenger’s side were recently dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern on a 10-2 aggregate.

Nevertheless, Arsenal chief executive, Ivan Gazidis is looking forward to the rematch.

“It will be very special for our Chinese fans to see a game of this stature,” he told the club’s official website.

“We have a fantastic following in China and the two games we are playing there this summer will be an exciting part of our build up for the new season.”

Kick-off time for the matches has not been confirmed.

Petition Calling For Barcelona vs PSG To Be Replayed Reaches 180, 000 Plus Signatures

An online petition calling for Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League to be replayed has gained over 180,000 signatures.

The victory on Wednesday at the Nou Camp carried Barcelona through to the quarter-finals 6-5 on aggregate, with Sergi Roberto scoring the clinching goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Real Madrid supporter Luis Melendo Olmedo began the petition on Friday, citing a string of what he felt were mistakes by referee Deniz Aytekin, and by Sunday afternoon the number of backers for his campaign had reached six figures.
The petition on change.org states: ‘I want to request a replaying of the Barcelona-PSG match.’
It then lists the reason as being: ‘Incidents that seriously damaged PSG. As a consequence of the refereeing of the German Deniz Aytekin who benefited Barcelona with his actions and his refereeing.
‘That is why I question the aptitude of the referee for his serious mistakes made during the match. I present evidence to anyone who wants to see them.’
The petition then lists a succession of incidents that its founder considers Aytekin to have got wrong, beginning with Barcelona’s opening goal through Luis Suarez, which it says should have been disallowed for offside.

Nigeria face reigning African champions Cameroon, who are second in the table, in their next game in Uyo in October.

Jose Mourinho cannot use Europa League as excuse to lose against Chelsea- Conte

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has told his Manchester United counterpart, Jose Mourinho, that he cannot blame the Europa League if they lose at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Mourinho’s team travelled over 4,000 miles to Russia last week, where they were held to a 1-1 draw by Rostov.

The Blues have however had an entire week, to prepare for the FA Cup quarter-final clash.

But Conte insists Mourinho had enough time to prepare and will still be able to put out a strong team.

“There are four days to recover, and this game is an important game for us, for them,” he said.

“I think their formation will be very good. Also because United and City have the best squads in this league.”

“We could have played on Sunday, or Saturday, if the federation (FA) decided it. But we are playing on Monday. I think that the federation showed great respect for Manchester United to play the last day available in the FA Cup.”

What Alexis and I were ‘laughing’ about against Bayern – Cech

Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech, has denied that he and Alexis Sanchez were laughing on the bench, during their 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16 tie last week.

Alexis was caught on camera laughing after he was substituted, as the Gunners crashed out 10-2 on aggregate.

But Cech says the accusations are “disrespectful”.

“It is sad and he was as sad as I have seen him,” Cech said.

“Unfortunately when you say the sentence, ‘Had we scored the second goal everything could look different’ and then you do ‘ooph’ [exhale] you know, but in the end the reality is you are 5-1 down and somebody twists it and says you are laughing on the bench.

“I found it very disrespectful to the player. But obviously you can take the picture and you can interpret it the way you want unfortunately. But we the players, we know exactly what he said and we know how he was hurting and he was as disappointed as anybody else. It is unfortunate and disappointing.”

VIDEO: PSG players filmed discussing a possible Champions League exit before defeat to Barca

Paris Saint-Germain quartet Marco Verratti, Blaise Matuidi, Thomas Meunier and Julian Draxler feared a monumental collapse against Barcelona despite heading to the Nou Camp with a 4-0 lead.

Prior to Wednesday’s game, no Champions League team had ever overturned a first leg deficit of more than three goals. But Barcelona broke that record against the Ligue 1 champions, scoring three times in the final seven minutes to complete a sensational comeback.

PSG’s 4-0 lead should have given them confidence heading to Spain, but it has now emerged that not even that advantage was enough for them to banish their fears prior to the match.

In a video shot before the second leg, Verratti, Matuidi, Meunier and Draxler were filmed discussing their previous experiences of blowing first leg leads against big sides.

“The first 20 minutes is going to be tough,” said Matuidi. “The pitch is huge. When Neymar has the ball, you’re always one-on-one.”

Draxler interjected: “Last year with Wolfsburg, we won [against Real Madrid] 2-0 at home. After 20 minutes in the Bernabeu, it was 2-0 to Real. Then, in the 80th minute, Ronaldo scored – 3-0.”

He added: “I think the coach and the team were afraid because we didn’t attack.”

Recalling PSG’s collapse against Chelsea, Matuidi added: “It was the same with us against Chelsea. We won 3-1 at home. You think ‘it’s all good, we are qualified’. When we landed there I think we were afraid, we didn’t attack. [We lost] 2-0. Eliminated.”

In the end, Wednesday’s result eclipsed all previous European collapses, and PSG’s players were treated to a volley of abuse when they landed back in the French capital.

A statement from the club read: “On Wednesday night, upon their return from Barcelona, the Paris Saint-Germain players were confronted and threatened by several individuals at Bourget Airport, despite the club and authorities reinforcing security.

“These individuals verbally insulted the players before vandalising their cars. Several vehicles were damaged.

“In this extremely hostile and aggressive climate, all vehicles were escorted to ensure the safe passage of the players, their families and club staff members. One individual was struck by a car trying to escape the crowd that was physically threatening the players and their families.

“A police investigation is under way to establish exactly what happened.

“The club, and all those present, have informed the investigators of their readiness to help the investigation, to get to the bottom of this regrettable incident.

“The club strongly condemns the actions and behaviour of the individuals in question.”

Harry Kane wins Premier League player of the month for February

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been named the Premier League player of the month for February.

The 23-year-old netted a hat-trick against Stoke in the last round of fixtures as well as scoring the winner against Middlesbrough earlier in the month.

“It’s a great honour,” said Kane, after picking up the award for the fourth time. “I’m in good form at the minute, I feel confident going into every match.”

Manager of the month, meanwhile, went to Pep Guardiola. Man City kicked off the month by thrashing West Ham 4-0 in their own backyard before seeing off Swansea at the Etihad. They completed a hat-trick of victories with a 2-0 win at Bournemouth.

Hazard wins Premier League goal of the month award for February

Chelsea star Eden Hazard has picked up the February award for Premier League Goal of the Month after his brilliant run and finish put Arsenal to the sword in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Hazard was a popular selection chosen from the combined votes of a panel of experts and the public, seeing off competition from Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater and Burnley new boy Robbie Brady to scoop the second prize of the year.

Hazard has been instrumental in helping the Blues develop a commanding lead at the top, and after scoring a sublime opener in the 2-1 win at West Ham, the diminutive playmaker has been recognised for another excellent strike.

With the Blues leading 1-0 against the Gunners on February 4, Hazard picked up the ball on the halfway line with plenty of work to do.

He looked up and embarked on a solo run which took him past Laurent Koscielny and then left Francis Coquelin on the floor before skirting beyond the Arsenal captain again and firing past Petr Cech for his third goal in his previous four home games.

It was a decisive contribution from the Belgian in what could prove a season-defining moment, with his celebrations after the magnificent effort showing the significance of the strike.

‘It is one of the best Premier League goals I have scored for sure,’ Hazard said. ‘I was not thinking about scoring but step by step I came close to the goal and in the last 10 metres I was alone.
‘When the ball went in I felt that I created something special so I was happy.’

Hazard is the second Chelsea player to win the award this campaign, after Pedro’s goal against Tottenham earned the November prize.

Chelsea are 10 points clear of Tottenham and Manchester City and need 24 points from their last 11 Premier League games, but they will turn their focus on sealing a FA Cup semi-final place against Manchester United on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Belgian has underlined his commitment to the Blues amid renewed interest from Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old stated earlier this season that he would only entertain the idea of leaving Stamford Bridge if he won the Premier League title again – an eventuality that could come to fruition this May.
Hazard said: ‘If I ever leave, it’ll be after winning a championship. You need to go out on a high so that people remember you for the right reasons.’

But despite the likelihood of Antonio Conte’s side not being caught at the summit, Hazard will not push through a move to the Bernabeu this summer, with three years remaining on his current Chelsea contract.

Pep Guardiola named Premier League Manager of the Month

Pep Guardiola has been named the Premier League Manager of the Month for February after three wins in three matches, but he doesn’t exactly appear ecstatic with the award.

Posing with the gong, Guardiola couldn’t muster a smile despite being recognised for his side’s performances last month.

Guardiola could be forgiven for the glum expression however, as his side struggled to a goalless draw at home to Stoke City on Wednesday night.

Manchester City only played three matches in February due to FA Cup and Champions League commitments but emerged with a 100 percent record, scoring eight goals and conceding just once.
City beat West Ham 4-0 at the London Stadium, won 2-1 at home to Swansea and beat Bournemouth 2-0 away from home.

The Spaniard was selected for the award ahead off Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho and West Brom’s Tony Pulis – whose teams all won twice but drew once in February.
Guardiola’s side currently sit third in the Premier League table, ten points off table-toppers Chelsea and behind second-placed Tottenham only on goal difference.

City draw at home to Stoke City was understandably overshadowed by Guardiola’s former club Barcelona and their remarkable Champions League last-16 comeback against Paris Saint-Germain the same night.

Fan protests may force me out of Arsenal – Wenger

Arsene Wenger admits an ongoing revolt among Arsenal fans will have an influence over his decision whether to leave the club at the end of the season. This comes as the Gunners have offered star midfielder, Mesut Ozil, a £280,000-a-week deal to stay in London.

Wenger’s position at the club came under renewed pressure on Tuesday after a humiliating 5-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich. The 10-2 aggregate defeat saw them eliminated at the last-16 stage for the seventh consecutive season.

Gunners’ supporters dissented against the Frenchman before kick-off, with an estimated 200 fans marching in protest against Wenger outside the stadium. The mood only soured further as the evening went on.

Wenger has an offer to extend his stay at the Emirates and insists he will hold off on making a decision until the end of the season. But, for the first time during his 20-year spell as manager in north London, he now admits the sight of fans turning on him could force him out of the club.

“I don’t know, its difficulty to judge [supporters], I have worked hard for 20 years to make fans happy,” he said speaking to reporters ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Lincoln City.

“When you lose a game I understand they are not [happy]. I don’t want to judge that. I said many times, you have to accept many opinions.” When asked if the rising tension between the club and supporters will have an influence over his decision whether or not to sign a new contract, he responded: “Yes, it will have influence. It may not be most important fact but you consider it, of course.

Ozil could earn around £280,000-a-week if he decides to extend his contract at Emirates. He is currently the highest earner at Arsenal with wages of around £140,000-a-week plus bonuses.

Arsenal signed Ozil from Real Madrid for a fee of £42 million in 2013 and the German has had a mixed career in England so far.According to Daily Mirror, the 28-year-old midfielder is stalling on his contract extension because he believes he can get more money at another club. Ozil has 15 months left on his current deal and could leave the club at the end of this season.

It is a similar issue with Alexis Sanchez as well. The Chilean winger has been offered wages of £200,000-a-week, but the former Barcelona star is holding out for more.

With Arsene Wenger’s future also in doubt, it seems that a massive exodus at Arsenal is definitely on the cards this summer. The French manager is out of contract at the end of this season and has not signed an extension yet.Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League table and will be looking to finish in top four.

Trump travel ban could hurt US 2026 World Cup bid – FIFA President

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, has said that President Donald Trump’s new immigration ban could stop the US from winning the bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

Infantino stated this while speaking in London on Thursday.

He made it clear that any country hoping to host the World Cup must be accessible to all participating nations.

Trump has banned citizens from six Muslim nations from travelling to the US and with plans to expand the World Cup to 48 teams, the order could prove to be a stumbling stock.

“When it comes to FIFA competitions, any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup. That is obvious,” Infantino said.

“Mr. Trump is the president of the United States of America and as such of course [I have] huge respect for what he does.

“He’s in charge, together with his government, to take decisions that are best for his country. That’s why he has been elected. In the world there are many countries who have bans, travel bans, visa requirements and so on and so forth”, he said.

Infantino added: “We are now in the process of defining the bid requirements. The requirements will be clear. And then each country can make up their decision, whether they want to bid or not based on the requirements.”

Brown Ideye set to make Tianjin TEDA debut

Brown Ideye is set to make his debut for Tianjin TEDA on Friday, when they play Jiangsu Suning.

Ideye joined the Chinese Super League club last month, but did not play as they lost their first game of the season against Shandong Luneng last weekend.

The Super Eagles striker says he is ready to play now, but admits his coach Jaime Pacheo will make the final decision.

“The next game is very important to us and I hope we bring back three points,” Ideye told sports.enorth.com.cn.

“Mbaye Diagne and I are roommates, the relationship is very good, but who gets the chance to play on Friday depends on the coach’s arrangements.”

Ideye also praised international team-mate Mikel Obi for helping him settle in.

He said: “From the first day I came here, Mikel has constantly helped me settle in.

“We are national teammates and there’s a good understanding between us, so we play together without any problems.”

FIFA President Speaks On Refereeing In Barcelona’s 6-1 Win Over PSG

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has refused to blame referee Deniz Aytekin, for his performance in Barcelona’s dramatic 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

Infantino also warned that football’s lawmakers, should be careful with adjusting the rules.

He, however, admitted that video assistant referees (VARs), will ensure “clear mistakes” are corrected. VARs are being introduced gradually into the game.

Barcelona were trailing 4-0 from the first leg and were awarded two penalties at the Camp Nou, as they overturned the four-goal deficit. One of them given for Marquinhos’ foul on Luis Suarez was particularly controversial.

“Whether that particular case was an injustice or not, we can leave it to the judgement of the referee [Germany’s Deniz Aytekin],” Infantino said in London on Thursday.

“What we saw was an incredible football match, whatever the result would have been at the end. This shows that football is really a fantastic game.

“Whenever you have the feeling you have seen everything, something else comes along that you’ve never seen before. It’s just amazing and incredible.

“We have to really be careful in the IFAB [International Football Association Board] if we want to touch the rules, because football is such an incredible game.

“In this case, I don’t know if it was a clear mistake or not but, in future, when there are clear mistakes, this will be corrected by the video assistant referee so we can make sure decisive matches are not decided by mistakes made in good faith by the referee,” he added.

Referee helped Barcelona qualify – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has claimed that referees helped Barcelona, in their dramatic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, but instead killed their own attempt to do the impossible at home against Bayern Munich.

Barca scored three goals from the 88th minute of the return leg at Camp Nou, to seal an incredible 6-5 aggregate win.

Their six goals on the night included two penalties, duly dispatched by Lionel Messi and Neymar.

24 hours earlier, Arsenal were leading 1-0, before the referee sent Laurent Koscielny off and awarded the visitors a penalty, which Robert Lewandowski scored to make it 1-1, effectively killing the tie off.

“Last night, it showed the importance of two main factors – the referee and big players,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Lincoln.

“At that level, you can be punished. It can be very quick and go one way or the other.

“In the last seven years, we played six times against Barcelona or Bayern.”

“In the last nine years we are only once the worst English team in the Champions League.”

Xabi Alonso announces retirement from football at the end of the season

Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso appears to have announced his intention to retire from professional football at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old has featured 27 times for Bayern this campaign, including playing all 180 minutes in their 10-2 aggregate Champions League last 16 triumph over Arsenal.

There had been reports earlier in 2016-17 that Alonso was considering hanging up his boots – with Philipp Lahm also catching the football world by surprise – but nothing official until now.

Alonso tweeted on Thursday morning: “Lived it. Loved it. Farewell beautiful game.”

Afterwards, he told Bayern’s website that he didn’t want to wait until his legs had gone and he was struggling to match the performance consistency he;s shown throughout his career.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I believe it’s the right time,” he said. “I always thought it would be better to quit sooner rather than later. I still feel good, but I believe this is the right moment.

“I wanted to end my career still at the highest level, and Bayern is the highest level. I’m incredibly proud and happy to play for FC Bayern and to be a part of this family.”

The Bundesliga club’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was quick to shower praise on the Spaniard, who has been with the club since August 2014.

“Bayern would like to thank a great player and a man who has played the Bayern way on and off the pitch excellently,” he said.

“Xabi Alonso is one of the greats of world football. He has won everything in his career. He is also an outstanding personality, a gentleman of football.”

Alonso’s career started at Real Sociedad in 1999 before Premier League giants Liverpool snapped him up four years later.

He became an iconic midfielder at Anfield, winning the Champions League with the club in his first season and three other trophies.

In 2009, five years after joining, he left for Real Madrid in a deal estimated to be worth £30 million. He won five titles in five years at the Santiago Bernabeu, including one Champions League final triumph.

He won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 in addition to being a champion at the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.

I never knew my goal would be allowed – Sergi Roberto

Barcelona forward, Sergi Roberto said he never believed his winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night in the round-of-16 second leg Champions League tie would have counted.

Roberto said he thought he was on offside position.

Barcelona pulled off the greatest comeback in Champions League history when they beat PSG 6-1 to win the tie 6-5 on aggregate.

Match-winner Sergi Roberto admitted he wasn’t sure if his decisive injury-time goal would count.

He told reporters, “I’ve thrown everything. I didn’t know if I was onside. I’m very happy.

“I threw myself on the ground and I saw the goalkeeper [Kevin Trapp] didn’t stop it.”

Barca were 2-0 up at half-time through a Luis Suarez strike and a Layvin Kurzawa own goal.

Lionel Messi added the third early in the second half from the penalty spot to increase their hope of advancing.

But the Catalan fans became quiet when Edinson Cavani scored the much needed away goal in the 62-minute.

Neymar free kick and penalty minutes in two minutes set the stage for Roberto’s 95th-minute strike to complete the rally and send Barca through to the quarterfinals.

Roberto added, “They say the fans are one more player, but today they were 10 more.

“In the end, this is also for them. Now to celebrate and think about the league game [against Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.”

Gerard Pique Predicts ‘A Lot Of Lovemaking’ After Historic Victory Against PSG

The defender expects couples to celebrate the 6-1 trouncing of Paris Saint-Germain in their own special way, to spark a baby boom nine months from now.

Gerard Pique prepared Barcelona hospitals for “a lot of lovemaking” after his club stormed back from four goals down against Paris Saint-Germain to claim the most shocking comeback win in Champions League history.
The defender and his team netted three late goals to secure a 6-1 win over PSG at Camp Nou on Wednesday, shocking the world with the late charge resulting in 6-5 aggregate win.
And the outspoken Spain international fully believes that after his side’s crazy win the city of Barcelona may be just nine months away from a baby boom as couples across the city commemorate a historic night.
“Hospitals need to hire more nurses in the next 9 months because tonight a lot of lovemaking will be happening,” he said after the win.

Barcelona refuse to rule out move for Massimiliano Allegri

Barcelona director, Ariedo Braida, has refused to rule out Massimiliano Allegri taking over as the club’s manager when Luis Enrique leaves at the end of this season.

Enrique has already confirmed that he will not be at the Camp Nou next season however, after spending three years at the club.

Braida admits that a number of familiar faces have been linked with the job and says Allegri could be in the frame.

“Allegri is a friend and we know each other very well, but it’s really not something we can talk about – it’s all top secret,” he told Radioanch’io Sport.

“There’s a different name coming out every day in the Spanish media, from [Ernesto] Valverde to [Jorge] Sampaoli, from [Ronald] Koeman to Eusebio, who is coach of Real Sociedad and is a part of the Barcelona family.

“Everything is possible. It’s something I would prefer not to talk about.”

Allegri is chasing down a third successive Serie A title with Juventus.

Arsene Wenger apologizes to Arsenal fans after Bayern hammering

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has blamed the referee and match officials, after his team were drubbed 5-1 in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League.

The Bundesliga champions came into the second leg of the round-of-16 tie with a 5-1 win.

The Gunners needed four unreplied goals to pull off a miracle. They opened scoring through Theo Walcott’s emphatic finish.

However, the match turned quickly on its head, after captain Laurent Koscielny was sent off and a penalty was awarded to the visitors. Robert Lewandowski stepped up and equalized.

Arsenal collapsed once again and further goals from Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal (twice) completed a miserable night for Wenger’s team.

“The second half of the game has been ruined by the referee,” Wenger told BT Sport.

“Lewandowski is offside, then a yellow card, on top of that he gives a red card. It’s not serious. It’s revolting.

“My team has produced a huge effort tonight. It’s difficult to understand what’s happened tonight.

“I’m sorry for people coming paying their money to see this sort of game.”

German-born Noah Bazee cleared to play for Nigeria

Noah Joel Sarenren Bazee has finally been cleared to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria by FIFA.

Bazee was born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, making him eligible to play for both countries.

The 20-year-old who plays for Hannover 96 in the German Bundesliga 2, was invited by coach Gernot Rohr for this month’s friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

The striker met Rohr who was in German on a tour of Europe to see his players and will now get an opportunity to play under him.

With senior strikers like Brown Ideye and Odiong Ighalo absent for the friendlies, Bazee will get the chance to make his debut and impress the national team handlers.

Nigeria will play Senegal March 23, before taking on Burkina Faso four days later.

Bellerin apologises to Arsenal fans after Bayern thrashing

The Gunners defender feels the fans deserve an apology after yet another underwhelming performance in a big game

Hector Bellerin has offered his apologies in the wake of Arsenal’s humiliating Champions League defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Arsene Wenger’s needed a miracle to reach the quarter-finals after a 5-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena in the first leg, but there would not be such a comeback as they were thrashed by the same scoreline on home turf.

Several Arsenal fans angrily left the stadium well before the final whistle and Bellerin admits the exodus affected Arsene Wenger’s side.

“I am really hurt because to see the fans leave the stadium so early,” the Spanish defender is quoted by the club’s official website.

“At the end of the day we play for them, want them to be happy, to be behind us, and it hurts to see them leave so early.

“We have to say sorry to the fans because we want to do better than that. We just need to try to make them happy with the rest of our season.

“We know we have got the players and the potential to do well, we just need to play every game the same way that we started on Tuesday. If we play that kind of football, we can be up there.

“We knew it was very hard for us to come back after that, and we just need to look at ourselves, learn from this situation and focus on Saturday. We have another game, another competition which we know we can do well in and we need to prepare for it.”

Tuesday’s defeat further piled the pressure on Arsene Wenger after Saturday’s 3-1 loss against Liverpool, with the Frenchman’s future at the club still unclear as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Arsenal will look to return to winning ways when they meet Lincoln City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

BREAKING: Ibrahimovich to serve three-match ban after accepting FA’s charges

Manchester United has been dealt a severe blow as Zlatan Ibrahimovich is set to serve a three-match ban after accepting the English FA’s charge of violent conduct in an EPL match in which Zlatan was seen pulling an elbow action on Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings.

As well as the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, Mourinho’s former club, at Stamford Bridge on Monday, Ibrahimovic will miss the Premier League games away to Middlesbrough and at home to West Bromwich Albion on April 1, after the international break.

The Swedish striker had until 6pm on a Tuesday to respond to the FA and opted not to contest the charge, despite claiming in the wake of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford that Mings had “jumped” into his right elbow. The incident was missed by referee Kevin Friend at the time but it was determined that the incident merited a retrospective red card when the footage was reviewed on Monday.

Wenger: I will decide if to sell Alexis Sanchez or not

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said Alexis Sanchez cannot force his way out of the club this summer.

The Chile attacker is being targeted by Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, after he was dropped for the trip to Liverpool last Saturday.

Alexis could be recalled for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, but Wenger says only the club can decide to sell or not.

Wenger said: “Alexis has 15 months of his contract so the decision of will he be here or not will depend completely on Arsenal Football Club and not on anybody else.”

The Frenchman also insisted that the player was left out, because he wanted to play “direct” at Anfield.

Wenger added: “I explained after the game at Liverpool that I decided to go for a more direct option in the game. That’s what happened. That was the unique reason for my decision.

“All the rest, his attitude – he’s a committed player and sometimes has excessive behaviours but you have that many times in the history of every squad.

“It’s about the team performance, not individuals. It’s a team sport and the most important thing is that we focus on our collective. Our game is built on collective expression. That is the most important thing, that we focus on what’s important and not the individual.

“Alexis played in all the games and when we didn’t perform away from home, we lost as well. We lost at City, United and Chelsea, and that’s what I think is the most important thing, to focus and produce as a team.”

Chelsea given go-ahead to build £500m stadium

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on Monday approved Chelsea’s plans to build a new £500m 60,000-seat stadium.

The Premier League leaders are planning to build the new area on the site where Stamford Bridge currently seats 41,361 fans.

“London is one of the world’s greatest sporting cities and I’m delighted that we will soon add Chelsea’s new stadium to the already fantastic array of sporting arenas in the capital,” Khan said in a statement.

The new ground could be completed in time for the 2021/2022 season.

“Having taken a balanced view of the application, I’m satisfied this is a high-quality and spectacular design which will significantly increase capacity within the existing site, as well as ensuring fans can have easy access from nearby transport connections,” Khan added.

“I’m confident this new stadium will be a jewel in London’s sporting crown and will attract visitors and football fans from around the world.”

The new stadium was designed by Herzog and de Meuron, the architects behind the “Bird’s Nest” stadium used at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.

“This is the latest significant step toward redevelopment of the stadium and the delivery of the extensive local community programme.

“Further steps lie ahead, both during and after the planning process, before construction work can commence,” Chelsea said in a statement.

Ronaldo still great despite changing role – Bale

Gareth Bale heaped praise on Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo for being able to change his game and remain the best in the world.

Aged 32, the clock is slowly but surely ticking on Ronaldo’s illustrious career and the Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer and four-time Ballon d’Or winner has adapted accordingly.

No longer the tricky speedster down the wing at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ronaldo has assumed a central forward role up front for European champions Madrid, scoring 18 La Liga goals this season.

And Bale is impressed with how Ronaldo has been able to evolve throughout his time in the Spanish capital.

“We’ve always got on well. We’ve scored a lot of goals, given a lot of assists to each other, we’ve won two Champions Leagues,” Bale said via the Daily Mail, “So it hasn’t gone too bad.

“He’s in great shape but his role has changed. He’s more of a striker now. When he was younger at Manchester United you’d see him running from deep.

“He’s changed his game slightly. He’s very effective in the box, scoring goals, making assists. As you get older, even I’m starting to change my game a little bit. He knows what he’s doing and he’s doing it very well.”

Ronaldo and Bale face Napoli on Tuesday, with Madrid leading 3-1 from the first leg of the Champions League last-16 fixture.

While Madrid are looking to secure their spot in the quarter-finals, it will also be a chance for Ronaldo to end his run of five games without a goal in the European competition.

Football fan incredibly loses his wife in ridiculous bet

A fan in Tanzania has incredibly lost his wife in a bet on the Dar es Salaam derby.

Two supporters bet on the match between Simba and Young Africans SC (commonly known as Yanga).

The wager specified that the winner would get to spend the night with the loser’s spouse.

And a contract was even signed to make it legally binding.

Simba ran out 2-1 winners in the match, which meant that the Yanga fan was technically supposed to give up his wife.

But it is believed that the pair eventually reached a financial agreement instead.

Nevertheless, the Simba general secretary confirmed that fans of both teams often lose their wives in bets.

He also offered the BBC World Football podcast an insight into his passion for the club, and its history.

At one point Simba were actually named Dar Sunderland.

And to this day they still wear the Black Cats’ red and white colours.

The club’s general secretary also confirmed that his house is decorated from top to bottom in red and white.

And he added that his wife is forbidden to wear anything in Yanga’s green and yellow.

Derbies between the two teams average crowds of around 60,000 fans and a match in October saw seats ripped up by rioting fans.

Amaju Pinnick convinced me to contest CAF presidency against Hayatou – Ahmad

Madagascar FA boss, Ahmad Ahmad, has revealed that the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, was among those who convinced him to contest for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Ahmad said this on a whistle-stop visit to Nigeria, to canvas support as he challenges incumbent Issa Hayatou in the March 16 elections.

“I think many things have to change in African football,” he told reporters in Abuja.

“We need change in refereeing, officiating, the way we train our coaches. We can’t organise a coaching licence course in 15, 10 days. The certificate is just to help you get a work. Our technical development must change.

“It was not my ambition to become the president of CAF, but colleagues like you (president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick) after the FIFA congress in Mexico (last year) called on me and told me it was time for change.

“Some people tried before (to unseat Hayatou), but they failed.”

Ideye: How Mikel convinced me to join Tianjin TEDA

Brown Ideye has admitted that he decided to join Tianjin TEDA, after speaking with Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel about the Chinese Super League outfit.

Ideye joined TEDA this week and is set to make his debut against Shandong Luneng on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has already been handed the No. 39 shirt and will compete with Gabon striker Malick Evouna for a place in the starting line-up.

“Mikel has told me about the whole team, and I will put my best into training and I will follow the coach’s instruction and get through the training team.

“I watched the Super League and I believe that with my current physical condition, I can make my debut at any time, I will strive for a position in the starting lineup”, Ideye stated in a chat with sports.enorth.com.cn.

How Guardiola Prevented Me From Joining Barca – Ozil

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, has revealed that he snubbed a move to Barcelona in 2010, because their manager at the time, Pep Guardiola, showed lack of interest.

The German playmaker became one of the hottest players in Europe after playing for his country at the 2010 World Cup.

Barca were among the big European teams keen on Ozil, along with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal.

The player himself was leaning towards a move to the Camp Nou, before eventually signing for their rivals – Real Madrid.

“Arsenal were interested in signing me after the 2010 World Cup, as were Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid,” an extract from Ozil’s new book ‘Die Magie des Spiels’, published by Bild, reads.

“My agent sat down with Bayern to discuss a move. The club told him about their plans with me and how they intended to use me. He had similar talks with the other clubs that wanted me.

“Before I travelled to Barcelona, I was convinced that was my next club. I was leaning toward joining Barcelona. There was no team in the world that played more beautiful football.

“But Guardiola did not attend talks and he did not call me either the days after. He did not even send me a text. He did not show me that he wanted to sign me as well. My interest in a move to Barcelona quickly decreased.”

Mourinho called me a coward and a cry baby – Ozil

Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil, has revealed that Jose Mourinho called him a “coward” and a “cry baby,” during an angry half-time bust-up while they were both at Real Madrid.

Ozil spent three seasons playing under Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Germany international recalls one time the current Manchester United boss questioned his work ethic.

“Mourinho screamed at me ‘Do you think two nice passes are enough? You think you are too good to enter a duel. You think you are so good that you can play at 50 per cent. Do you know what it looks like when you enter a duel? Let me show you.’ He then tiptoed around the dressing room with his hands close to his body and pursed lips,” read an extract from Ozil’s book ‘Die Magie des Spiels’, which is being serialised in Bild.

“I lost it and screamed at him to go out there on the pitch and play himself, taking off my jersey and throwing it at his feet. I told him to put it on and go out there.

“Mourinho was just laughing and sniped ‘Are you giving up already? You are such a coward. What do you want to do? Get in the warm shower and wash your hair? Do you want to be alone? Or would you rather show your team-mates, the fans and me what you can do? You know what Mesut, why don’t you start crying! You are such a crybaby, get in the shower. We do not need you.’

“I grabbed my towel and walked past him into the showers without saying a word to him.

“I later apologised for my behaviour to captain Sergio Ramos and the rest of the team.”

We fear UK may deny Messi and Neymar entry visas – UEFA

European football’s governing body, UEFA has said that the body fears Barcelona stars Lionel Messi & Neymar may be denied entry visas into the U.K for the Champions league final in Cardiff this May if they qualify, due to ongoing legal battles with the Spanish government.

Lionel Messi and Neymar have been embroiled in tax evasion court battles for over a year which has led to the resignation of former Barca president Sandro Rosell, with tax prosecutors alleging Messi evaded tax with offshore accounts while Barca hid the actual value of Neymar’s transfer so as to reduce money paid to former club, Santos and tax given to the Spanish government.

New laws in Britain could hinder people who have ongoing legal battles from entering the U.K and with Brexit set to be formalized, the entrance of non-British citizens into the U.K could become harder.

“Neymar and Lionel Messi both have [tax evasion] procedures going on,” UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin told the New York Times.

“This year, the Champions League final is in Cardiff. “Imagine if they did not let them in.”That is a big thing for us, if players from England can travel anywhere, but players from other teams cannot travel to [the UK].”With free movement in Europe, it is much better.”If we see that players cannot enter because they have any sort of procedure ongoing then we will simply think if we should play our European matches there.”

He also talked about PSG/Ivory coast player, Serge Aurier’s incident during the group stages, when he was denied entry for a match against Arsenal.

“I was very disappointed when Aurier, from PSG, was not allowed to enter England, That will worsen when Brexit happens, especially if the reasons were as formal. “We could have a serious problem.”

Amos Adamu banned by FIFA for two years

FIFA Ethics Committee has banned former Nigerian sports administrator, Amos Adamu, for two years.

The committee has been investigating alleged breaches of its code of ethics by Adamu since March 2015.

It recommended a two-year ban and a fine in December.

Adamu was a former FIFA executive committee member for four years, before his initial suspension for three years in 2010. The 62-year-old was found guilty of asking for money in exchange for World Cup votes, an accusation he denied.

“The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee, chaired by Hans-Joachim Eckert, has decided to ban the former football official Amos Adamu for two years from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level,” FIFA announced in a press release on Tuesday.

“The investigation into Mr Adamu was conducted by Dr Cornel Borbély, chairman of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee, which resulted in a final report being submitted to the adjudicatory chamber on 2 December 2016. Adjudicatory proceedings were formally opened on 20 December 2016.

“The adjudicatory chamber determined that, through his involvement in the organisation of an event in 2010, while being a member of the (then) FIFA Executive Committee, Mr Adamu violated articles 13 (General rules of conduct), 15 (Loyalty) and 19 (Conflicts of interest) of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

“The sanction is effective from 28 February 2017, the date on which this decision was notified.”

Barcelona to play Manchester United in the summer

A Barcelona legends side will take on their Manchester United counterparts at Camp Nou on June 30.

The game had originally been scheduled for last summer, but several of the players due to be involved had commitments revolving around the European Championship in France, meaning the fixture had to be called off.

There will also be a return leg between the two sides, which will take place at Old Trafford on Sept. 2.

Managed by Jose Mari Bakero, Barca legends played their first ever game earlier this year in Querertaro against a team which included former Mexican stars.

Among the players to play for the Blaugrana that day were Hristo Stoichkov, Vitor Baia, Edmilson, Gheorghe Popescu, Ronald de Boer and Gaizka Mendieta.

Since that game in April, Ronaldinho has returned to Barca in an ambassador role and upon his appointment the club also said he would be involved with the legends side, although no players have been confirmed for the match against United.

Barca say they will announce further fixtures soon as they bid “to honour the many footballers that have worn the club jersey over the years and to help globalise the Barca name and values through former players.”

Manchester United legends, meanwhile, will play an all-star charity match at the nib Stadium in Perth in March.

Former United players, including Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin and Mikael Silvestre, will take on the PFA Aussie Legends in a clash that will raise money for the Manchester United Foundation and the DT38 Foundation.

Only few players in our generation spend foolishly, says Ogenyi Onazi

Ogenyi Onazi has enjoyed a steady career since his teenage days as a silver medal-winning member of the Golden Eaglets at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

After winning the African Cup of Nations in 2013 and partaking in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Onazi says he would have joined Liverpool but for an injury sustained at the tournament.

The midfielder has since grown to become an integral part of the Super Eagles and will be relied upon to help Nigeria qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Onazi believes that the Eagles, under the tutelage of Gernot Rohr, now have the “zeal” to excel and are “ready for all tournaments”

In an interview with TheCable on the Football Africa Arena (FAA) platform, the Trabzonspor FC of Turkey star talked about his career thus far, Gernot Rohr and the future of the Super Eagles.

How did it feel to miss two AFCON competitions back to back?

As at that time, we had lots of issues on ground that I don’t want to even remember but I am happy everything is clear now, we are focused.

Onazi in agony at the 2014 World Cup

Onazi in agony at the 2014 World Cup

How serious was your injury against France at the 2014 World Cup?

It was very serious. I was scared. It actually denied me the opportunity of going to the English league when Liverpool came for me.

What are the challenges stopping African teams from winning the FIFA World Cup?

Well, as we all know Africa always go to the World Cup with a lot of distractions which I can’t mention now. If the federations can solve all issues to let the players concentrate, I think we can make it.

Relationship with local and foreign coaches

For club and country, I have met lots of coaches and I have never had any problems with any, only one of the coaches I would say maybe he was having issues with me for no reason but I really enjoy and appreciate all of them.

On players wasting earnings and going broke after retirement

It is very few players in our generation that are spending foolishly, the others have learnt from others so I have no doubt they will invest well.

What’s your favourite position?

For me any position in the midfield I can play comfortably well but defensive is my favourite.

Onazi during the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations final match between Nigeria and Burkina Faso

Onazi during the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations final match between Nigeria and Burkina Faso

Will you join the China adventure?

I don’t think so because I have my football plans in Europe. Hopefully, much later.

Should Rohr invite players playing in China to Super Eagles?

For me, Chinese League is growing really fast and strong. A player who plays in China, I will invite him as far as he is having playing time and doing well the only problem is when he is invited and can’t meet up, then they can find other options.

Can Gernot Rohr qualify Nigeria for the 2018 World Cup?

Yes, since he has taken the job and he has shown he knows what he is doing and we are ready to support him to any length.

What principles does he instill in Super Eagles players?

He, first of all, makes us understand that we will not live by the past. That we need to forget about what we have achieved and what we have not. Now, we have to create another history and change the mindset of Nigerians. I have learned a lot from him tactically that is why I know he will take us places.

What’s your best ever game in a Super Eagles jersey?

Well, so many games I have played from day one are great games but since you asked for one I would say the game against Ivory Coast because I played against the best in the middle with Yaya Touré and the rest.

Low moments playing for Super Eagles

We have a lot of them; losing some very important games, not being able to qualify for some major tournaments.

How can one succeed in football?

It takes discipline, dedication, hard work and most especially, prayers.

Ihenacho looking dapper as Man City unveils New Suits

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Ihenacho was looking more like a ready bridegroom as Manchester City unveiled new club suits designed by DSQUARED2.
The 21 year old was not only smart in the new suits but could pass for young man set for the Altar with his new bride.

Manchester City may arguably play the best football in the Premier League and now they will perhaps look the most stylish off the field as well.

The Etihad Stadium outfit unveiled a new club suit on Monday, which is exclusively designed by renowned fashion brand DSQUARED2.

City and DSQUARED2, an Italian brand, announced their multi-year partnership in October last year. Since then, DSQUARED2 have dressed the club’s players and coaching staff in their pre-match outfits for away Champions League matches.

To celebrate the arrival of City’s new suit, the founders and designers, Dean and Dan Caten said: ‘We wanted the players to feel as confident in this suit as they do when they pull on their team jersey.

City hit the headlines back in October last year when they jetted off to Barcelona for their Champions League match in eye-catching double denim outfits, made by international fashion house DSQUARED2.

They were all dressed the same in casual travelling attire as they were pictured arriving at Manchester Airport ahead of their flight to Barcelona.

Dele Alli’s parents desperate to reconcile with him

Parents of Tottenham star, Dele Alli, are currently pleading to reconcile with the player after he was abandoned by them.

Alli, now earning $60,000 a week in London, was allegedly a product of a short relationship between Kehinde Alli and his mother, Denise.

Kehinde Alli, later split from Denise and took Dele with him to Lagos, where Dele grew till he was about 11 years old before returning to England.

Alli, reportedly married a new woman in 2006.

With the recent success of Dele Alli, things have taken a new turn as Kehinde Alli has dumped his new wife to reconcile with Dele Alli’s mother in a frantic effort to get “his family” back together.

Both Kehinde and Denise are reportedly begging Dele Alli to let them back into his life after he has refused to speak with them since 3 years, a family source told newsmen.

The source revealed Dele does not feel connected to them at the moment and that he could consider their request after much consideration.

I never beg players to sign – Mourinho won’t persuade Ibrahimovic to stay

Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho, has said he will not persuade Zlatan Ibrahimovic to sign a new deal, as he “never begs players to sign”.

Ibrahimovic moved to Old Trafford as a free agent last summer and has scored 26 goals already for the Red Devils.

The Swedish striker scored twice at Wembley on Sunday, as United overcame a resilient Southampton team 3-2 to win their first trophy of the season.

The 35-year-old signed a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, but that clause has not been activated yet.

Speaking after the EFL Cup final, Mourinho said: “I never beg for players to sign. But if need be, Manchester United fans can go to his house and stay all night.”

There are doubts Ibrahimovic may extend his stay in England, if United don’t qualify for the Champions League next season.

Chelsea reportedly rejected £90m from Chinese club for Diego Costa

Chelsea reportedly turned down a world-record offer for Diego Costa.

Chinese Super League club, Tianjin Quanjin, were keen on the Spain international and were ready to pay as much as €107million (£90.3million) to sign him.

SFR Sport reports that Costa was offered a salary of over £85million return for a three-year contract.

Costa’s head was turned by the deal and he clashed with manager Antonio Conte, which resulted to him being dropped for the trip to Leicester City.

Tianjin owner Shu Yuhui had confirmed last month, that he held talks with Costa’s agent, Jorges Mendes.

“I made an appointment with Mendes and he came to my hometown to visit me. At that time, we were interested in signing Costa,” he said.

“PSG told us Cavani would only be allowed to leave in June, even though the player himself was willing to join us.

“The same can be said for Costa because Chelsea would only let him leave in June. However, the new season of CSL will almost reach the halfway stage in June, we can’t wait so long.”

Solomon Dalung calls emergency meeting with NFF

Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has called for an emergency meeting with the executive board members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

This was contained in a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Nneka Ikem Anibeze.

The meeting is scheduled to hold on February 28 in the Minister’s Conference Room at the National Stadium in Abuja by 11 a.m.

In the statement, Dalung emphasized that attendance of all board members was mandatory.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not stated, it might be to discuss Nigeria’s position on the forthcoming election into the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which will hold March 16 in Addis Ababa.

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, has publicly declared his support Ahmad Ahmad, the president of the Madagascan FA, to defeat incumbent Issa Hayatou in the March 16 elections.

However, Dalung in a statement signed by his director of press, Tolu Makinde, said that whoever Pinnick supports or not are “his personal opinion and do not represent the position of the government and people of Nigeria.”

Jose Mourinho pays tribute to Claudio Ranieri with initials on shirt

Jose Mourinho has criticized the Leicester City players for putting themselves first and letting down manager Claudio Ranieri before he was sacked just nine months after winning the Premier League title.

Mourinho turned up for his weekly press conference on Friday with the initials ‘CR’ printed on the front of his training top in dedication to Ranieri after posting a picture of the two men on social media.

The Portuguese coach also experienced being sacked by Chelsea in December 2015, the season after leading them to the title, but said that was ‘peanuts’ compared to the way Ranieri has been treated by Leicester.

Jose Mourinho wore a shirt with the letters ‘CR’ on it in tribute to sacked boss Claudio Ranieri

But Mourinho saved his most scathing criticism for the Leicester players who are understood to have turned against their Italian manager as the fairy tale turned sour.

‘If some of the stories I am reading are true or are a little bit true, it’s hard to find words to justify that,’ he said. ‘As managers we have to be ready to cope with that.

‘Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, leaving, more money, forgetting who helped them to reach a certain level.

‘This is not just football it’s a bit of our world. Some principles are going away a little bit. I’m really sorry about it but I lived a similar experience. I thought last season when I was sacked as a champion it was a giant negative thing, now I realise it was peanuts to what happened with Claudio.’

Asked about his tributes to Ranieri, Mourinho added: ‘It is my little homage to somebody that write the most beautiful history of the Premier League. Somebody that deserves the Leicester stadium to be named Claudio Ranieri (Stadium) and he is sacked.

‘Leicester made history two years in a row – one year because they did the most beautiful thing in the Premier League and one of most beautiful things in football history, now they are also in the highlights with the decision that I think has everyone in football united because it is something very very difficult to accept. It is good to realise how football is, and we need to adapt to it

‘My Instagram and shirt are homage. I don’t think he needs more homages because no-one can believe what he did. No one can do anything about it. No one can delete history.

‘I think it’s Claudio’s fault because if last season instead of being champion he finished 12th, it would be amazing and he would still be in a job because Leicester play not to be relegated. He’s paying for his success, it’s his fault.’

Doctors told me my sickness was incurable – Anenih

Former Chairman, Board of Trustees of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Tony Anenih, has recalled how God saved him after six overseas doctors told him that his illness was incurable.

Speaking at the 52nd birthday celebration of former member of House of Representatives, Hon. Nduli Elumelu in Abuja, Anenih said God proved doctors’ reports wrong and saved his life.

He explained that if he had accepted the report of the medical doctors, by now, he would have been a forgotten issue.

He said: “Life belongs to God and it is only God that has the power to take another man’s life. What happened to me in the hospital is enough proof. Imagine being declared impossible to live by six different medical doctors and surviving such reports.

“The truth is that no one has the power to take another man’s life unless God wills it. It is my pleasure to witness this life celebration because it’s a worthy celebration.

“It has been a long time I attended a public event and I had my personal reasons for taking that decision. But I am happy to be here as it has given me the opportunity to see people I have not seen for a very long time.

The elder statesman also expressed his concern for the peaceful co-existence of the Nigerians and urged the government not to sacrifice anything for peace and security of live of the citizens.

I’m staying at Manchester United, says Wayne Rooney, denies China move.

Wayne Rooney will remain a Manchester United player, the striker said in a statement released on Thursday.

The 31-year-old said he’s not ready to leave the Red Devils for the Chinese Super League – or anywhere else – just yet.

The presence of his agent, Paul Stratford, in China had given life to speculation that his time at the club he joined in 2004 had come to an end.

But the United legend says he wishes to remain a part of the Jose Mourinho-led team.

“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Man United,” Rooney’s statement said.

“I hope I’ll play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.

“It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”

Rooney has already announced plans to retire from international football after next year’s World Cup in Russia.

His desire to lead England to the tournament may have been the motivating factor behind his decision to continue his professional career in United.

“Arsenal have mental problem” – Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal defender, Laurent Koscielny has said the team have a “mental problem” in maintaining consistency against big teams.

Injury forced the withdrawal of Koscielny from last week’s Champions League match in Germany against Bayern Munich with the score at 1-1 soon after the break.

The Bundesliga champions went on to win the match 5-1.

Arsene Wenger’s side have won just once and lost four times against other clubs currently in the Premier League’s top seven, and the defender noted, “We have up and down results. It’s a mental problem.

“We have the technical and physical qualities. We have to make an effort for the whole game.

“Against big teams you need more than talent. It takes more commitment, helping your teammates to defend. You have to find other reserves.

“In certain games we lacked the knack, determination in challenges. We’re in a difficult situation and we have to stick together. We have to hate losing.”

Bad news for Arsenal as Cazorla is ruled out for the season

Santi Cazorla will not play for Arsenal again until next season, as he has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

The Spanish midfielder has not played for the Gunners since their 6-0 victory over Ludogorets in the Champions League in October last year.

Cazorla underwent surgery on his ankle in December and was expected to be out for three months.

Last month, the Premier League club activated a clause in his contract, which has seen his deal extended by two years.

The 32-year-old’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season.

But an FA document shows that Arsenal took up the option on December 20, 2016. The club moved quickly to file the relevant paperwork with the FA, to avoid a scenario where Cazorla is eligible to speak with foreign clubs from January 1, 2017.

Cazorla has scored twice for Arsenal this season against Watford and Southampton.

I’m not going to China – Rooney

Wayne Rooney said Thursday he was staying with Manchester United following persistent speculation he could make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.

British media reports said Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, had been in China speaking to interested clubs but the United and England captain insisted he was staying put at Old Trafford.

“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United,” the 31-year-old Rooney said in a statement released to Britain’s Press Association.

“I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.

“It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”

Mourinho posts classy tribute to sacked Ranieri

The Manchester United manager, who was also dismissed a year after winning the title while at Chelsea, has words of encouragement for the Italian

Jose Mourinho has posted a classy tribute message to Claudio Ranieri after the Italian was sacked by Leicester City.

The Premier League champions made the announcement on Thursday evening, a day after the Foxes were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla in the Champions League.

After their quite extraordinary title win, Ranieri’s side have struggled in the 2016-17 season and find themselves in 17th place in the table with just five league wins from 25 matches.

Leicester were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall at the fifth-round stage, with the club’s hierarchy feeling a decision had to be made to arrest their decline.

Ranieri’s success last season, that saw him crowned FIFA’s Best Coach of the Year, has not been forgotten about, however, with United boss Mourinho sending on a message of support.

The 54-year-old, who, like Ranieri, was also sacked the season after claiming the Premier League title, posted on his Instagram page to remind the Italian that no one can delete his achievements.

He wrote: “CHAMPION OF ENGLAND and FIFA MANAGER of THE YEAR.sacked. Thats the new football claudio.keep smiling AMICO.nobody can delete the history you wrote.”

Rooney’s agent in China for transfer talks.

Wayne Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford held talks in China on Thursday amid mounting speculation over the Manchester United captain’s future, British media said.

Rooney, 31, has been sidelined by manager Jose Mourinho heightening expectations he could leave United for the mega-rich Chinese Super League.

Guangzhou Evergrande, Beijing Guoan, Jiangsu Suning and Tianjin Quanjian are said to be among those interested in United’s all-time top scorer.

However it remains unlikely that any move would be complete before the transfer window shuts next Tuesday.

Rooney missed Wednesday’s Europa League last-32 second leg in Saint-Etienne through injury, but dominated conversation in France.

Mourinho said that Rooney’s future was in his own hands in comments at his pre-match press conference that only fuelled the speculation.

“You’ll have to ask him,” Mourinho said. “You have to ask him.

“Of course I can’t guarantee (he will be here). I can’t guarantee that I’m here next week, how can I guarantee that a player is here next season?

“What I can guarantee is that if Wayne one day leaves the club it is not because I want him to leave the club. That’s the only thing I can guarantee.

“I would never push – or try to push – a legend of this club to another destiny.

“So you have to ask him if he sees himself staying in the club for the rest of his career or if he sees himself moving.

“It is not a question for me because I am happy to have him.”

Pushed on whether it was possible Rooney could leave in the next week, Mourinho retorted: “You have to ask him, not me.

“I was very open with you in the answer. I don’t want him to leave.”

Rooney’s deal at Old Trafford runs until mid-2018, with United holding the option to extend it by a further year.

He is United’s record goalscorer and has won five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy since joining as an 18-year-old for £27m from Everton in 2004.

A return to boyhood club Everton and move to Major League Soccer could be other avenues for Rooney, but are unlikely to offer wages anywhere near that available in China.

Former United team-mate Carlos Tevez, ex-Chelsea midfielder Oscar and former Watford striker Odion Ighalo are among those to have recently made big-money moves to the Far East.

However, a switch to China could bring Rooney’s England career to an abrupt end.

The country’s all-time top scorer has won 119 caps and is closing in on Peter Shilton’s record of 125 appearances.

Rooney has already announced plans to retire from international football after the next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Mourinho angry as FA Cup tie against Chelsea is announced before Europa League draws

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has blasted the organizers of the FA Cup, for announcing the date of their quarter-final clash at Chelsea before Europa league draws.

United sealed their passage into the last 16 of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over St Etienne on Wednesday.

They face a hectic fixture list over the next few weeks and their game at Stamford Bridge will be played on March 13, sandwiched between their Europa League last-16 first and second legs.

Mourinho is angry that the date was announced before the Europa League draws are conducted this Friday.

“Of course and I feel really surprised that the decision is made before our draw in Europe,” he said.

“Because in this moment nobody knows where we play, nobody knows where the first and second matches are. Imagine we play Chelsea on Monday and then we have to go to the second match in Europe in Russia, Turkey or Greece.

“I think once more the interests, they go in front of the clubs and English football’s interests, and nobody cares about it. But this is what I have.

“I cannot play against Chelsea with the second team. I cannot play against Chelsea with the U21s like Manchester City did last year. I cannot do that – we are Manchester United.

“I don’t do that as Manchester United manager. I don’t do that to the FA Cup because the FA Cup is not guilty of these decisions. The FA Cup is beautiful, the competition is historical. I have to treat Manchester United supporters and the FA Cup in the right way.

“I cannot go there with U21s. Probably they would deserve it, but I don’t do that, so what is going to happen is an accumulation of matches.

“People playing a lot of matches, I have to make some rotation but some of the boys will have to play in all these consecutive matches”, he said.

Ex-Eaglets coach accuses Guardiola of betraying Iheanacho

Kelechi Iheanacho’s lack of game time at Manchester City is a form of betrayal by manager, Pep Guardiola, according to coach Manu Garba, the former Nigeria U-17 coach, who gave Iheanacho his breakthrough at the 2013 World Youth Championship.

Iheanacho has missed the last seven games of Manchester City. He failed to make the matchday squad on five occasions and was twice left on the bench by Guardiola.

Even the injury to Gabriel Jesus hasn’t worked in his favour as many speculated and Garba believes the 20-year-old has not been fairly treated by the manager.

“He (Iheanacho) pulled out of the Nigerian team to the last Olympics in Rio on the orders of Guardiola, who also made the club sign an extension with him. Fast forward June to this day and he can’t get into the team,” Manu said.

“It’s normal for him to feel betrayed by the man, who made him sacrifice the chance to play at the Olympics with Nigeria. He is a good lad and will definitely prove people wrong in the future.”

Iheanacho was listed among the reserves in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League game against Monaco, but he never made it off the bench. Guardiola preferred Jesus Navas and Fernando when he needed goals in the game against Monaco.

Wenger sacking would be ‘unfair’ – Brady

Arsenal legend Liam Brady has told Eamon Dunphy’s Stand podcast that Arsene Wenger continues to deliver what the ownership requires and warned fans calling for his exit: “Be careful what you wish for.”

Wenger’s contract is up in the summer and with Arsenal currently 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and facing another Champions League exit in the round of 16 after losing the first leg 5-1 at Bayern Munich, he is facing serious questions over his future.

Brady, who played for Arsenal between 1971 and 1980, worked as head of their youth academy under Wenger until 2014 and he said: “There’s a lot of uncertainty around the club.

“There’s a lot of the fanbase would be unhappy to see Arsene Wenger in charge next year, but then are clubs always going to listen to what the fans want to say? You ask every fan to pick a team and they’d probably pick a different team each and every one of them. They all have their own views.”

He said Wenger, who took charge at Arsenal in 1996 and has secured a top-four finish every season, is “like the CEO of a big business and he’s delivered year in, year out as regards to the results the owners are looking for.”

He acknowledged that many fans are disappointed with the lack of a league title since 2003-04 but said: “It’s only two years ago that he won the FA Cup, and the year before he won the FA Cup and [they have been] consistently in the top four of the Premiership, so to sack a man who has a record like that would seem unfair.”

Wenger revolutionised Arsenal, who had developed a reputation for dour football even during their successful years under George Graham, and Brady said: “Lots of fans have been brought up on the team he created, with players like Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit.

“They are craving those days again, but it’s easier said than done. Be careful what you wish for.”

Brady said Arsenal had struggled to match their rivals largely because of a financial shift, highlighting the arrival of Roman Abramovich at Chelsea in 2003 and the Abu Dhabi United Group at Manchester City in 2008.

He added: “Even Tottenham were a poor shadow of what they are now. Liverpool have invested a lot of money. Man United are a money machine.

“To keep the team consistently in the last 10 years in the top four, without having the money to spend … I know he’s spent money, but nothing compared to [what] the likes of Chelsea, Man City and Man United have been able to afford. I think you have to take all that into consideration.”

He said Wenger would reflect on his future and hold talks with majority shareholder Stan Kroenke but warned: “A new manager doesn’t guarantee you success.

“I’m not living in the past. He’s a victim of his own success.”

We may consider only 3 players from China in Super Eagles – Gernot Rohr

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, has warned Nigeria players moving to Chinese Super League, CSL, that those playing in Europe would be considered ahead of them during selection.

Brown Ideye is close to joining Super Eagles duo of captain John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo in the CSL, which will bring to five the number of Nigerian players who have moved to the Far East since January.

Overall, there are now seven Nigerian players playing in the league and Rohr says he will consider less players from there.

He told journalists, ”The Chinese League is not as backward as many thought, or it has moved forward from what it use to be.

“But Europe is still where I feel is best for players as the level is very high.

”We have to consider the players in competitive leagues before looking at the players in less competitive league, maybe three players from China would be ideal for our squad.”

I’m under pressure to impress Guardiola – Aguero

Argentine striker, Sergio Aguero, said pressure was on him to impress Manchester City Manager, Josep Guardiola.

Aguero led the club’s Champions League to fight-back against Monaco on Tuesday, scoring two goals in the process.

Speculation had mounted over the former Atletico Madrid striker’s future at the Etihad after he lost his place to Brazilian, Gabriel Jesus last month.

But following Jesus’ foot injury, which will rule him out for much of the season, Aguero has been recalled to the starting line-up by the Manager.

Aguero scored a brace and set up Leroy Sane for the last goal in the 5-3 victory over Monaco in the round-of-16 first leg.

He said afterwards, “The truth is that those things are for the manager to decide, the only thing I can do is keep fighting to be able to play.

“Fortunately he counted on me, now I have to help the team and show what I can do.

“As I’ve always said I want to be here at the club, I’ve always said that at the end of the season it won’t be my decision. The truth is that with these things it’s the club that handles everything, and obviously it’s always my intention to stay.

“The truth is we get on very well. What he wants, above everything, from all the players is that we push a little more. He’s always asking me for more, more, more!

“Obviously it’s a sacrifice I have to make, that we all have to make, and fortunately tonight it worked and we’ll see if it keeps working in the next game.”

Johnson returned to the Lakers on February 2nd to advise ownership on basketball and business. He wasted no time on what his intentions were, telling USA Today after he was hired he wanted to be in charge. Sutton United keeper resigns after eating pie in 2-0 defeat to Arsenal

Sutton United goalkeeper, Wayne Shaw, has resigned after his pie-eating stunt during their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday.

The 45-year-old caused a frenzy on social media, as he ate the pie on the substitutes’ bench during the game at Gander Green Lane.

The Gambling Commission later announced they would investigate the incident, after Shaw admitted he was aware Sun Bets offered odds of 8-1 that he would eat a pie “live on air.”

Sutton manager Paul Doswell has now confirmed the keeper has offered to cancel his contract.

“It’s been very disappointing, no doubt about that,” he told Sky News.

“I woke up this morning to this storm of criticism and it’s something we have dealt with quickly as a club.

“Wayne has offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon and its been accepted. It’s a very, very sad end to what’s been a great story.”

I’m still open to Super Eagles call up – Obafemi Martins

Former Inter-Milan player, Obafemi Martins, said he has not retired from international career with Nigeria.

Martins has not featured for the Super Eagles for three years.

Obagoal, who has also played in the US Major League Soccer, now plays for Chinese Super League, CSL, side Shanghai Shenhua.

The 32-year-old said he can still contribute his own quota to the Super Eagles if called up by coach Gernot Rohr. He, however, said he respects the fact that young players need to be given opportunity in the team.

Martins told reporters, “I never am through with international football. If the new coach of Nigeria Gernot Rohr needs me, I will gladly honour his call. I am fitter than ever.

“You have to respect the quality of the young players who are coming through with the national team, they deserve to be given their chance in the team.

“Playing in China is way higher than in the past, we now have top model professionals in the league, so it’s no longer a case of if you go to China, you are winding down your career.”

James: Zidane’s rotation does not affect Real Madrid

After making seven changes against Espanyol, the Real coach plans more for the trip to Valencia – but the midfielder is confident

James Rodriguez believes Real Madrid can cope with any rotation from head coach Zinedine Zidane because so many of the squad are in fine form.

Madrid travel to Valencia in La Liga on Wednesday for one of their two games in hand on title rivals Barcelona and Sevilla.

Zidane made seven changes for Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol and has promised further alterations at Mestalla as his side cope with a busy run of fixtures.

But James, who will hope to get the nod from Zidane having started just four times in the league this season, is confident Madrid will readily adapt whenever any star players are given a break.

“Regardless of how many changes are made, we are all on good form and that is down to the fact that we have got such excellent players,” the Colombia international told the club’s website.

“We are doing well, everyone is on good form and you can see that in the performances.

“We now face the rearranged fixture and we have got to go into it with real discipline and show great desire.

NFF takes position against Issa Hayatou’s 8th term bid for CAF president

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is against Issa Hayatou for contesting for an 8th successive term as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, has revealed that they are backing his opponent, Ahmad Ahmad, who is currently the head of Madagascar’s FA.

Pinnick told the BBC that the election will be “a defining moment for African football.”

He added that Ahmad was “courageous” for coming out to challenge Hayatou, adding that CAF needs a “new generation” of leadership, following the change at FIFA.

Pinnick, however, admitted that Hayatou could still win, but said if he did, the veteran Cameroonian would need to be open to different influences.

“You have to listen to a larger audience instead of just a tiny cabal, you have to know it goes beyond you,” Pinnick said.

“I will definitely work with him if he wins but my prayer is we need a bridge builder and that person is Ahmad.”

Hayatou has been CAF President for over two decades.

Zidane: Barcelona are not in Crisis

The Frenchman has played down the Catalans’ recent poor form and has also given updates on the futures of Isco, Pepe and James Rodriguez

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane insists rivals Barcelona are not in crisis after a Champions League thrashing by PSG was followed by an unconvincing win over struggling Leganes.

The Catalan giants’ hopes of winning the European Cup look over after being beaten 4-0 in the first leg by Unai Emery’s men while they struggled to respond at the weekend needing a late penalty to win 2-1.

However, Zidane has played down talk Barca are struggling, despite huge pressure on Luis Enrique’s side following their recent poor form.

“Barcelona in crisis? No, I do not think so,” Zidane said in a press conference.

The Madrid boss also took time to address the futures of Isco, Pepe and James Rodriguez, praising all three.

“Why Messi is not celebrating his goals at Barcelona anymore”- Coach

Head coach of the Argentina national team, Edgardo Bauza, has said Lionel Messi is not celebrating his goals at Barcelona because he is very angry with criticisms that came after their 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi scored twice including a 90th-minute winner from the penalty spot, as Barca narrowly defeated Leganes 2-1 in La Liga on Sunday.

But he refused to celebrate the goal with the team, as the team had been jeered during the game.

“I think he reacted to the criticism he may have received after PSG,” Bauza told radio show, Joga Bonito.

“I noticed he was very angry when he scored the goals.”

Barca coach Luis Enrique, has already said he is not interested in if the 29-year-old celebrated or not.

Their win saw them move within a point of league leaders, Real Madrid, who have two games in hand.

Brown Ideye set to join Mikel at Tianjin TEDA

Brown Ideye is set to leave Olympiakos for Chinese Super League side, Tianjin TEDA, before the close of the transfer window.

Sources close to the player have told ESPN FC, that Ideye is likely to be lining up along with his international team-mate, John Obi Mikel, soon.

The transfer window in China closes later this week ahead of the new season next month and TEDA are in the market for a new striker to add to their squad.

Ideye has been at Olympiakos since 2015, after joining the Greek club following a miserable one-year stint in the Premier League with West Brom.

The 28-year-old scored seven goals in 31 appearances in all competitions for the Baggies before leaving. He went on to net 13 times in his debut season in the Greek Super League and already has 15 goals this term.

It is understood that personal terms have been agreed with the player and the move is at an advanced stage.
