Cross River verification exercise uncovers 1,458 fake school teachers

The Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Stephen Odey yesterday said 700 ghost workers and 758 teachers with fake National Certificate for Education (NCE) were uncovered in its recent verification exercise.

He said: “One of the shocking revelations was the case of a head teacher who transferred his late wife’s certificates to his new wife and made her a classroom teacher, while some security men and nannies who had acquired the basic teaching qualifications were promoted to classroom teachers.”

He said the discovery would save the state over N60 million monthly, adding that the board has granted amnesty to the teachers with fake certificates by asking them to go back to school and get their genuine certificates.

He explained that the board has put measures in place to ensure that further recruitment exercise into the board was devoid of fake teachers as it had been bury with the exercise in the last few months across the state.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar has opened up on the cause of the crisis between him and some top politicians in the state, saying that the Ghost Workers Syndrome which takes away N1 billion from its earnings every month has been a major challenge.

Abubakar who spoke to journalists in Abuja disclosed that some people’s governorship ambition was responsible for the rising number of those opposing his government. He had been locked in some cold war with members of the National Assembly from Bauchi including House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.
