For allegedly killing of a 16-year-old boy, Obinna Iwuoha, last week Thursday at a police checkpoint in Ugwu Omiri, Okohia community of Isiala Mbano Local Council, Imo State, the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, has dismissed the trigger-happy sergeant, Wilson Ufere, from the force.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, disclosed this to The Guardian on Monday in Owerri. He added that after preliminary investigations into the killing, the CP ordered for Ufere’s prosecution in the court as soon as possible.
Obinna, who was a secondary school one student, died instantly, while three others, Tochukwu Uzoukwu, 25, Chukwuebuka Donatus, 24, and Chigozie Iwuala, 28, were severely injured leading to their being in a coma for days.
Enwerem said: “The CP has directed that the officer be dismissed and he has been dismissed. After the departmental trial, he will be charged to court soon. There was an attempt to burn down the police station in Isiala Mbano by the angry mob, but the police prevented them.”
Ufere was said to be infuriated by the response and immediately released some bullets into Iwuoha’s body, killing him instantly.
