Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested one Ijeoma Ojukwu and four others for their alleged involvement in the importation of 2.24kg of cocaine.

Ojukwu, who is purportedly the niece of the late Biafran warlord, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, was arrested alongside an NDLEA officer who facilitated the clearance of the illicit substance at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja.

Other suspects were identified as Ali Bala Adamu, a member of staff of NDLEA, Victor Umeh, Uche Igwelo and Egbuche Fidelis Osita.
All five suspects were taken for interrogation at the agency’s headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, after the illicit substance imported from Brazil was allegedly abandoned at the airport.

Confirming the arrests, NDLEA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mitchel Ofoyeju, said operatives of the agency commenced investigation after an abandoned luggage from Brazil was found to contain 2.24kg of cocaine at MMIA.

He said further investigation led to the arrest of five suspects including a member of staff of the narcotics agency.
Reacting to the arrest, the acting Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Mrs. Roli Bode-George, said the agency would prosecute whoever is found guilty.

She said: “The NDLEA is following every lead professionally and will exploit more opportunities towards getting every culprit arrested.
“We have also expanded the scope of our investigation and everyone involved in this illegal importation of narcotics shall be diligently prosecuted.

“The agency will continue to uphold the rule of law and dislodge drug trafficking organisations in the country.
“NDLEA will not compromise its high standards. We are working very hard with international and local collaborators in projecting the image of Nigeria in drug control programmes.

“Any attempt by any person or group of persons to sabotage this great achievement shall be resisted. Probity and strict law enforcement shall be sustained.”
