Summary: Globally: Everyday an estimated 3,500 girls marry before reaching their 15th birthday. [Bruce, Judith. 2007. Population Council. Child Marriage in the context of the HIV Epidemic] Another 21,000 girls a day marry before the age of 18. Early marriage (before age 18) and child marriage (defined here as before age 16) can have damaging effects on the lives of the girls involved and by extension their children and communities. Across the African countries surveyed by the United Nations World Report on Violence against Children, on average more than 40 percent of girls marry before age 18. That figure rises to 60 percent in some parts of East and West Africa and up to 75 percent in Niger. [IPPF UNFPA 2006 (cited in ICRW 2007)] In Niger, where early marriage rates are the highest in the world, only 15 percent of adult women are literate, and less than one-third of girls enroll in primary school. [Every Girls Counts, 2001] In Niger World Vision is conducting awareness raising activities at the village level to dissuade parents from marrying their girls early, sponsoring girls to go to high school and conducting micro credit and literacy activities with mothers in an attempt to reduce child marriage.

She needs a pen not a penis.
She needs a text book not a conjugal bed.
She needs the classroom not the labour room.
She is a child too young to have a child.
Her biological composition is not ripe for womanhood.
Her mentality not matured for parenthood.
Her physical strength not strong for a house wife.
She is a child not a bride.
You consider her consent irrelevant.
Her opinion does not count.
Her future dreams are being shattered.
Her economic contribution to the nation has been hampered.
All by a wicked system with no justification.
Oppressing the helpless and most vulnerable.
You should care for her education not your ejaculation.
She needs fatherly direction not a husband’s erection.
