House okays Independent candidacy, Local Government autonomy

The House of Reps. during its plenary session at exactly 10:49pm tonight announced the result of votes taken on the constitution amendment. The House overwhelmingly voted in support of local government autonomy, separation of the office of the Attorney General from Minister of Justice, provision of roles for state council of chiefs, enabling the office of the Attorney General and Auditor General access the consolidated revenue fund.

Meanwhile, the House also approved the retention of labour matters on the exclusive list while it also empowered state governments to generate and distribute power and independent candidacy during elections  amongst others.

Members of the NLC, TUC, Youth Groups and other civil society groups were allowed into the chamber to observe the voting process. Although, the manual voting process was adopted after the failure of the electronic voting gadgets supplied by Nigcomsat. Also, Muslim members broke their Ramadan fast in the Chamber to give critical and due attention to the urgent national matter.
