#AwakeningYou: WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY T.M? – by Haastrup Steven @StevenHaastrup

A young leader was having a lot of problems with managing his time very well. He observed that his vision was fast slipping through his hands despite the fact that he was working so hard…

Welcome to #AwakeningYou – a Tuesday weekly script of #StevenSpeaks.

The young leader observed that his hard work had not translated into effectiveness and he was worried. Of much serious bother to him, as he had noted recently on reflection, was the huge gulf that his absence from home had created between him and the woman he loved. “Agnes is the best thing that has happened to me and I am about to lose her like I have lost direction. I need help.” He told an older leader whose level of effectiveness was legendary.

The leader looked at him and saw what he had had seen in many leaders. The wrinkles on the young man’s face belied his age. He had suddenly grown grey hair. He had lost the vitality with which he started and life was ebbing out of him gradually. He offered to help like he had done to so many tired leaders. He got a sheet of paper and wrote: “VF and please be careful of TM. Take a daily dose of VF and you will be alright.”

The older leader was about to expatiate when the impatient leader ran off to the biggest pharmacy in town armed with the little note from the older leader. He stood excitedly before the pharmacist and asked for a vitamin called VF. The pharmacist had never heard that before but decided to check through his computer to be sure. After a fruitless search that lasted about half an hour, he gave up and told the young leader there was no vitamins by that name. “By the way who is the manufacturer?”

The young leader replied, “I believe it is a special vitamin for select users. I believe it is not common. It does not even have a TM.”

“What is a TM?” asked the pharmacist. The leader was surprised. “TM is Trade Mark. That shows how classified the drug is. I have been asked to take a dose of it everyday and I am ready to pay anything for it.” The pharmacist assured him there was no drug called VF and that if he was in a better position than any other pharmacist to know.

The young leader went back to the older leader and told him his ordeal. The older leader saluted his zeal but counseled him to temper it with knowledge. VF, he explained, meant VITAL FEW. You need to decide each day the Vital Few issues that you must address. This should be the focus of your zeal and energy. These are issues that guarantee your leadership effectiveness. The young leader felt stupid but he got the message. He thanked his wise counselor and was about leaving when the older leader called him back. “Remember to be careful of TM.” “What is TM sir?” “I am sure you now know it does not mean Trade Mark. It is Trivial Many. Those are issues that compete for your time. They are many and demanding; yet they are trivial. They give you a semblance of conscientious hard work but they contribute little or nothing to your leadership effectiveness.”

Months later, the young leader came back happy and excited. “How is the VF working?”

“Very well sir, as you can see. And like you advised, I am very careful of TM.”

Dear reader, you will be more effective when you concentrate on your VF and run away from TM.

Ponder through…  Be decisive and say… I am changing Focus today!
